Who: Sanura and Adam
When Late Night
Where Outside the Sweets Shop//going home
What: What's the point of Christmas? So Sanura thinks

While closing up the shop, Sanura secured the big bag of food and sweets she had gathered for her family for Christmas Eve and for Christmas. It was going to be a pleasant night and breakfast since she assured her siblings she was going to cook something that was edible. But when she caught her reflection from the store window she frowned lightly.

"I used to never get what I wanted for Christmas" She knew that sounded spoiled, but that meant so many things. Her expectations couldn't be high here. But even so she still felt that sad feeling of disappointment which made her feel like a horrible person since her siblings were here. She should feel so blessed. Even though she didn't truly believe in the meaning.

It stemmed ever since she was a child. She would smile at every gift she got and it didn't matter how unhappy she was about her gifts, she would still smile. Sanura had to be grateful, it was all about being grateful. Once everyone caught a glimpse of how bubbly she was when she received something they trapped her in her bubbly persona and she felt like she had to stay bubbly. That was what she was doing for her entire life. She was smiling about everything despite the fact she might want something more, or something different. In truth, she wasn't so bubbly. It was easy to pretend.

For Christmas she wanted to find herself. The therianthrope was immature and for some reason she was ashamed of it. Tilting her head for a moment at her reflection, she removed a few stray strands from her face before she began to walk towards her town cottage, putting that oh so familiar smile on her face.

Adam was, for the most part, happy lately. He had very little to be sad about, save for the current demeanor of his alchemist, Constance. She seemed more distant than ever from people, only interacting with her family ever since her resignation from the Head Council. Adam would miss listening to their meetings, but he understood that things were changing for Constance and he respected that. Things were changing for him, too. He was cheery for the holidays. Everyone around him seemed happy about the holidays as well, and so there was very little to get his spirits down. There was no more talk of separation, not since that first and last talk with Constance, and Adam forgot about it. He wasn’t the type of person to linger on things that weren’t problems in the present.

He was walking through the market place with nothing but light bulbs along the streets to guide his way. Few people were out this late on Christmas Eve, save for him . . . and it seemed someone else. He noticed the figure up ahead and recognized her face when the light illuminated her features from the side as she turned.

“Sanura!” Adam called, waving a hand and grinning. It seemed they always met this way, with him calling out to her and waving his arm off. He hurried up toward her. “You’re out late,” he said matter-of-factly. “Aren’t you doing anything tonight?”

Sanura stopped in her tracks and though she tried to fight it, a smile emerged on her face. She set her belonging down and crossed her arms, slowly turning towards Adam. The therianthrope decided that she could be feeling as negative as she could possibly feel, but Adam could somehow repair that. Maybe it was the adorable waving, but it could be three thousand other things.

"Adam, uhm." Well hell, it was Christmas Eve and she decided to hug him instead. It wasn't overwhelming. In fact in Sanura's head she was laughing at herself because she near extended her hands out to warn him ahead of time before she gave him the hug.

When he asked about what she was doing she somewhat laughed. "I'm trying to avoid poisoning my family. I'm actually a bad cook most of the time, but I insisted on cooking to prove to them I could do my part besides the chores." The next words near plummeted out of her mouth.

"You want to come?"

Adam wasn’t expecting a hug, so it caught him by surprise at first. Normally, he thought people didn’t like to hug each other unless they knew one another very well and it was a special circumstance. This must meant Sanura now considered him one of those people to her, which washed away the surprise and brought back the happy look to his face. Despite his momentary bumbling, he returned the hug. He was a little startled with himself when he noticed he wanted to hug her again once she pulled away. She smelt nice, and it was pretty cold outside. He liked hugging Sanura.

His cheeks might have turned a little pink, but Adam didn’t notice it. It could have been blamed on the cold. He lit up when she asked if he wanted to come, even though he didn’t know where they were going. “Yes,” Adam answered hastily. He paused for a moment, the redness increasing across his cheeks. He smiled shyly at her. “Yes, I’d like to come along.” Then, a sudden question popped out of his mouth. “Are you cooking tonight for them? At home?”

Even though she could hear him perfectly fine from where he was standing, Adam inched a little bit closer, his hands shoved deep into his coat pockets. He should have had gloves on, but he didn’t.

Sanura felt an outburst of excitement but she somehow found it in her to just smile coyly before she looked over at Adam. She would still experience the flushing in her face when she encountered him, but she was becoming more used to his presence although she did kind of get all fluttery and stupid in her head. She'd have to work on herself innerly though outside she wasn't making as much of a fool of herself. Her speech was much more steady, her eye contact much more confident and stable.

"Yep! Your chef, at your service! I can make whatever you like. Though, it's okay to let me know I am a horrible cook because there are times when I can make some wonderful meals and then there are times when...well..I ask my sister to taking the steering wheel as far as the cooking goes. But my comfort zone is salad, soups and chicken based meals. I make some wonderful home made hot chocolate too. No one wants to be stuck with the shivers."

She hadn't seen Adam in a while, but every time she saw him, they had a wonderful time. Sanura always liked to check up on him. "What have you been up to?" She bumped shoulders with him. "Behaving?"

Adam found himself beaming at Sanura. She was really good at getting him to do that. He liked smiling around her, though, and it didn’t embarrass him. Well, most of the time it didn’t embarrass him. There were some few moments where he felt distinctly uncomfortable but excited, and now was one of those times. “I’m a really good cook,” he said suddenly. “I’ve been cooking for a long time. Maybe I can help?”

It wasn’t like he had anything else to do tonight. Christmas wasn’t until tomorrow, and he wouldn’t be at dinner with his whole family until then. Constance was in bed early, and Adam was pretty much on his own. It was also another excuse for him to tag along with Sanura.

She bumped against his shoulder, and Adam felt the corners of his mouth curl up as he bumped back into hers. “Don’t I normally behave?” he asked innocently enough, turning to look at Sanura. She looked awfully pretty tonight, and Adam was staring and he didn’t even know it.

"You cook!?" Well, this was perfect. He was making it harder and harder not to like him...and you know..tell him. It was easy to blame the cold for her blushing, so she figured she had a continuous excuse.

Sanura could pull a fast one on her siblings. She looked around like she was telling a big secret. "Okay, so we'll go into the kitchen and just act like you're helping. But how about we split the work seventy thirty? I'll make it up to you." She gave him pleading eyes. "If this dinner sucks they'll never let it go. I'm sure they'll fake food poisoning just to rub it in my face." She wrinkled her nose at him. "What do you cook? I have all sorts of food back home but I have chicken, potatoes, rice, tomatoes, you know that stuff in my bag right now. I was just going to technically play it by ear, but if you have a plan, believe me, I am listening. I have all kinds of seasoning, pots, pans-you know."

Did he normally behave? Hmm, well. Perhaps he was growing out of his elemental with his guardian shell. "I don't know. For all I know you were out just waiting to cause trouble but now I am dragging you along for dinner."

Sanura started touching her face, figuring she had chocolate under her eyes like she sometimes did. "It's the chocolate right? Sometimes, I eat too many chocolate covered strawberries then touch my face. It's so silly I know."

Adam grinned brightly at her response. He was pretty proud of being able to cook, and he certainly enjoyed doing it. “Yes,” he said happily, nodding his head once. “Lucinda taught me how to cook. She always said it was important to know how to make food, so you never starve or have to eat unpleasant things. She even taught me how to do it without having a stove handy!” Oh, Adam could probably cook a somewhat gourmet meal out in the wilderness as long as he found some good herbs growing out in the woods.

“Seventy-thirty,” Adam repeated, but she didn’t say who was doing what and so Adam didn’t catch on right away. He was genuinely confused. “Who does seventy, and who does thirty?” he asked, not sounding as if he was particular either way. In fact, he wouldn’t mind cooking at all. He caught on a moment later, though, as she talked about how her siblings wouldn’t let it go if it sucked. “Oh, you want me to do the seventy?” Adam oddly didn’t have a problem with that, and he brightened up at the idea of helping out Sanura with something. “Okay!” he announced, sounding just like a little kid.

He tried to recall the big list of things he knew how to cook with food. “Hmm, I know a lot by memory, but we could just do a new recipe out of whatever you’ve got. Getting extra things this late would just take up time, and it’s easier than you think to work with what you have.”

Adam felt the similar flush coming back to his face as he grinned shyly and looked away. He wasn’t normally known for causing trouble, but the way she put it was really cute.

He realized he was staring when Sanura thought she had something on her face. Adam took a deep breath as he shook his head, wondering what to say to explain why he was staring and finding himself tongue-tied in the process. “No, you don’t have anything on your face. I was just . . . umm . . . well . . . ” Adam had no idea what to say, except for the truth, so he blurted it out. “You have a very pretty face,” he said quickly.

There, it was out. And there was no taking that back.

Sanura didn't know how many shades or red there were, but she was pretty certain that her face turned the deepest shade in existence. She probably appeared to be some sort of rare raccoon since she was sure the only thing that wasn't red on her body were her eyes, which glanced down shyly for a moment before she dumbly sputtered out "You have a pretty face too."

Half closing her eyes in embarrassment to her response, she looked up slightly while scratching her head. Sanura had a few things to say herself and if she didn't say it now, things were going to stay awkward like this. While she worried about making things more awkward, things were about taking chances and this was sort of..no really worth it.

"I..I'm not sure this is going to make much sense at first." The Therianthrope set down her bags and slightly started to pace. "I think people think you are more dense than you really are. I think I even treat you more childish than you really are and I'm sorry for that." She ran a hand through her hair, pretty much going insane on what was right to say next. "I don't want to say this to you like a child because I hardly think you are one. In fact I can't imagine what it's like to pretty much be an adult and have to be taught how to deal with the world without having the chance to be a child first." She chuckled at herself, throwing her hands up in the air. "I'm sorry if this isn't making any sense. I'm winging it here."

She stopped pacing and managed to look at Adam in the eyes. "I like you. It's not one of those friendly things. It's more than that. It's what makes me so stupid around you. Makes me so careful about what I say to you, you know, makes me so worried about how I need to act around you. But really, the truth is I should just be myself because I feel comfortable in doing so and I guess that's what makes me so nervous and I am saying this because I think you understand. I don't know much about elementals. But I think they are underrated as far as intelligence. Aren't you scared too? You know about growing up? Liking people? Having to part from people?"

Sanura found herself sitting on the pavement randomly. "I don't like you just because you're cute. You make me laugh, you make me feel better, you make me think. You..can cook!" She suddenly just started to laugh at her ramblings. But it felt good to just get it out instead of just staying awkward and silent. It wasn't just about herself.

"I don't want you to feel like a kid around me, or like..well..anything. I just want you to be the Adam that you want to be. I guess that's what this is about too. It feels so good to see you. I just want to make sure you know you don't have to do anything for me. Just seeing you is enough."

Did she breathe at all? Maybe.

Glancing down shyly at the ground, Adam finally took notice of the heat in his cheeks and realized he was slightly embarrassed. Sanura had said he had a pretty face, too, but he was certain she wasn’t looking at him anymore than he was looking at her in the moment. It was really awkward, possibility one of the most awkward moments of his life, and Adam was actually scared of Sanura’s impending reaction. Just because she said he had a pretty face too didn’t mean she got funny feelings in her stomach when she was around him. Adam tried to recall all of the words his family used to use for these feelings, but all of them escaped him for the time being.

Adam looked up, worry settling into his features as Sanura put down her bags and started to pace. He took that as a bad sign, but he waited to see if it would get worse or better. Everything she said after that may have appeared to go over Adam’s head as usual, but he actually understood what she was saying, even if he didn’t say it out loud. It wasn’t something he could really respond to. At least not in his own eyes. What did you say to something like that, anyway? He knew some people thought he was dense, but he didn’t think about it. Adam brushed it off his shoulders and continued on his way as happy as ever, but not because he was stupid. It was just how he was, and there was no other way to explain it.

His eyes met hers halfway through her speech, and he wasn’t quite sure if he heard her right or not. Did she get those funny feelings, too? It wasn’t like because Adam liked everyone; it wasn’t something more than that. And he did understand what she was saying. Her questions were all things that he feared, too. He had emotions like anyone else, and he had to deal with life like them, too.

Sanura eventually finished speaking, and the ground became the focal point of his gaze again. Adam too ka deep breath and exhaled, thinking it might help him. Then, he suddenly looked up, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. “You like me? Like . . . in that way they talk about in movies before the two people kiss?” It was Adam’s best method of comparing the feeling to something, even if it was a little childish. That was just how Adam was.

He found himself looking down again, uttering a one word answer to her earlier questions. “Yes,” he said softly, admitting. “I . . . get scared of those things, too.”

Sanura let out a laugh, not at all some sort of mannerism that was insulting to Adam's question about how she felt about him, but in an adoring way. She was getting used to the warmth on her face. Around him, it was like some sort of new body trait. So, she was just ignoring it, accepting it. "Yes, like the people in the movies. " She slowly confirmed. For some reason she saw Adam in some silly Pajamas watching a random disney movie over something more risque like Risky Business

The Therianthrope had to tilt her head ever so slightly to make sure she heard Adam's confession. "It's not something to be ashamed of you know?" She offered him a warm smile before she walked closer to him. "I myself get scared of all sorts of silly things. Everything from burning my house down due to cooking from worrying what my life is going to be like five years from now. Being afraid makes you." Well she didn't want to say human because he wasn't one.

"It makes you sane. If you don't feel scared it makes you numb, it makes you nothing. People associate scared with being some sort of coward. But if you accept your fears and learn how to challenge them and overcome them, I think that makes you even better than being fearless."

She moved as close to Adam as she could, a sheepish look on her face. Though the expression on her face stated she was perhaps shy in her question, she really wasn't.

"What are you afraid of?" She waited a moment before she went on. "You can trust me."

She did like him in that way, and it caused Adam’s unsure look to harbor a little bit of a smile as he shuffled his feet. Adam didn’t know what to do about it, of course, but it made him feel giddy just knowing it for sure. But the talk of feelings and fears was a lot to take in at once, and Adam felt his chest grow heavy with the ache of bad nerves. They were all over the place in this situation, and though he could keep his calm well during combat, this was just not the same. He felt all fluttery and out of place no matter where his feet stood.

“I’m . . . not ashamed,” Adam said slowly, chewing on his bottom lip. At least, he was fairly sure he wasn’t ashamed as much as he was very nervous right about now, but it had nothing or little to do with fears and more to do with Sanura liking him and him liking her. It was all so strange and new for Adam.

He thought that was true, what she said about fears. Adam wasn’t the type to think having fears made him a coward. In fact, for a person who was a trained fighter and loved it so much, he was rather peaceful and in tune with his feelings. It was an odd combination.

Adam shifted a little, the anxiety shooting up like a rocket through his heart when Sanura got very close to him. “I . . . I don’t know,” he said honestly, his face twisting up in confusion. “I’m just scared right now.” He took in a deep breath and exhaled, hands shoved in his pockets and one of his feet scratching against the dirt beneath his shoe.

Sanura gave a full on smile and hooked one of her arms with Adam's. "What, of me? I'm harmless I swear. My cooking is scary, but I am utterly harmless." She unhooked her arm from the earth elemental and returned to being serious. "You know, the best thing about being scared is that there is no limit to how long you can be scared." She began to retie her pesky hair while explaining.

"For example, I was afraid of the dark ever since I was a little girl. It took me all the way until I was.." Well this was embarrassing. "Eighteen. There are things that will make you scared and you can't shake it off just because someone encourages you to not be afraid." The Therianthrope gave a sheepish smile. "I'm not one of those people who push. Pushy people suck."

To lighten him up, she took a small handful of snow and dumped it on his head. "Now that's an interesting look, isn't it?" It was Christmas Eve, the last thing she wanted was for Adam to worry, but she was glad she told him how she felt.

Adam’s heart skipped a beat and felt like it was going to burst when she linked her arm with his. He smiled at what she said, the corners of his eyes wrinkling, and a small laugh came out of his throat. It was hard for him not to be terrified of people, not because they were scary but because he never felt he was truly human himself — and he never knew what was going to happen next or what should happen. That was the scariest thing of all.

He glanced over at her. “Wouldn’t that be a bad thing, though? Being scared for too long?” Adam wasn’t good at being anything but, and though it had never caused anything bad to happen to him he received an instinctive vibe from other humans that they disliked fear. Sanura seemed to think differently from the others, and maybe that was part of the reason that made her jump out at him more than all the rest. He wasn’t sure what exactly she was saying, but he listened more closely because of it.

Sanura gave him an example, though, and he thought maybe he understand what she was saying. Adam looked down at the ground, a faint smile on his face. It faded as he tried to recall something of his own. “I’ve always been afraid of . . . fitting in,” Adam said, glancing at Sanura. “I know I’m different. It makes me scared that I won’t.”

All seriousness disappeared when Sanura suddenly dumped a handful of snow onto his head. Adam jumped at the cold and shook off the snow, trying not to laugh about it. “That’s not fair!” he said. Adam immediately went for some snow himself, grabbing her by the arm so she couldn’t run off, and dunked it on her head as he laughed.

Sanura was about to hit Adam with another hand full of snow, but then she suddenly stopped. She didn't move away from his grasp, instead she moved closer and looked up at him. However, she was cleverly packing the snowball tightly within her hands.

"I think you fit in." Sanura stated, packing the snow ball tighter within her grasp. Her hands grew numb after awhile since she disregarded the cold of the snow. "If you try too hard, then it might be more of an issue. But if you just walk around and talk to people, you'll do fine." Sure, sometimes he had questions that weren't like what an "adult" would ask. But many weren't aware that he was an elemental. This place wasn't like the cruel world back..well..before the virus. Many people had the same issue. Not knowing if they would fit in. Even she felt weird when she arrived.

"You know how many people are different? I'm different! I can turn into a tiger. I bet when you walk by someone, chances are they are different too. So, in this case I'm not sure you have anything to worry about." She finally threw the snowball at him, but there was a point to it. "But if you want to be like others. It's nice to know you can feel. It would be difficult for me if I couldn't feel." She admitted.

"But I understand."

Sanura had a good point that Adam had to take into consideration. If he tried too hard, then it wasn’t really going to work. He laughed when she talked about turning into a tiger, and she threw the snowball at him, which hit him dead on. Adam squeezed his eyes shut as he tried to block it, stepping away from her quickly.

“Well, I didn’t mean it that way,” Adam said as he laughed. “More like . . . I want to do what normal people do, but . . . I don’t know much about personal customs when you’re with other people.” His lifted his eyebrows. “I know family,” he stated. “How you act with family, and what’s okay. But I don’t know what to do with other people. My sister told me there were so many things you were supposed to do differently . . . ”

There were also the times when he saw the strange things some people did with each other. Sometimes he just heard about them. “For instance, you’re supposed to key a man’s car if he breaks up with you!” Adam announced loudly as he loosely stepped to the side and scooped up some snow from the ground. “Or take a baseball bat to his headlights!” He molded the snow in his hands into a ball, wrinkling his nose in confusion. “It’s so strange!”

He threw the snowball at her, rushing off ahead on the path to avoid another attack from Sanura.

Sanura stalled for a moment and smiled. She was a fast runner when she wanted to be. Avoiding slipping on the snow she first jumped on Adam's back and dumped a hand full of snow on his head. Shortly after she jumped from his back and stood in front of him. "....Adam you are full of surprises." She complimented while she moved close enough to him to share the same breaths. "But so am I."

She kissed him, just briefly on the lips and pelted him with another snow ball. "You better be glad I'm the key-the-car sort of girl by the way! I'd seriously do some ass kicking!" Well, she wasn't sure if she had it in her to be one of those girls, but if pissed enough, she swore she could! She grabbed the items she was carrying and only jogged ahead of him slowly, so he would know where the pathway was to her house.

If only Adam knew how fast her heart was beating. It felt like she suddenly was in the summer season.

But it was worth it.
