Sunday: December 23, 2007
Who: Zane, Hayate, and Chris
When: Late morning, a few hours after this
Where: Medical Pavilion
What: Hayate is treated for his near-death experience

Zane was beginning to wonder just what sort of people were living in Elysium. This was the second time he had been confronted with a poisoning. The first had been Malcolm with a substance that mimicked a heart attack. This time, a vampire was given blood thinners. It wasn't a "traditional" form of poisoning, but for a vampire blood thinners were deadly. Zane had a hard time believing that it had been accidental especially since the blood bank in the pavilion took every precaution with the blood they gave the vampire population. It had gotten into this man's blood supply, and someone had put it there.

The doctor did not have any physical proof of the supposed act, but he clearly remembered being approached by a nurse over a month ago with disturbing news:

"Doctor Smith, there's a vial of blood thinner missing from inventory."

"What? How?"

"We don't know, Sir, we only know that we have one less than the count last night."

"Is anything else missing?"

"No, Sir, just the blood thinner."

"If it's only one vial, then it must be a miscount. Just recount them again, and then get someone else to double check your work."

"Yes, Sir."

He didn't think anything of it then, and considering the fact that no other vials had gone missing since that time, Zane was convinced that it was a fluke. The result of a miscount and nothing more, but seeing this vampire on the verge of death made him think otherwise. Though the time in between the missing vial and the poisoning was over a month, the coincidence was far too big to overlook. Zane had a feeling that the missing vial of blood thinner was the very same that was used upon this man.

Zane had alerted the Head Council of the incident, and they had already sent a team of investigators to the vampire's cottage to collect any evidence. It was a long shot, but maybe they could find something at his house. Zane hoped they did.

He and the medical pavilion staff had worked tirelessly all morning to rid the vampire of the blood thinners that were coursing through his body. Miraculously, the vampire (whom they later found was named Hayate Ishikawa) had brought himself to the Medical Pavilion before he collapsed in a heap. Since then, they had been overloading him with Vitamin K, while simultaneously running his blood through a dialysis machine to clear it of the anticoagulant. It had worked, though the patient was still unconscious at the moment. All they could do now was wait to see if the vampire would pull through.

The doctor looked down at the patient, and then at the young girl who had refused to leave the vampire's side ever since she arrived a few hours ago. Zane sighed deeply. "Are you sure you don't want to go home and rest? Maybe get something to eat?" Zane didn't have the heart to tell her that the vampire had been poisoned. It wasn't the kind of news you gave to a young girl, and so he kept his answers vague, and instructed the nurses to do the same.

Chris looked up at Dr. Smith, and shook her head. "I don't want to go home," she said. Her eyes were red with tears, and her cheeks were still damp from them streaming down her face. She had rushed over to the medical pavilion as soon as one of the guards at Hayate's cottage told her where he was, and she hadn't stopped crying since. Chris didn't know what happened to Hayate, and so far the doctor and the nurses weren't telling her anything. All she knew was that he was unconscious in bed, and that no amount of her begging him to wake up was working.

The doctor left the room momentarily, giving Chris a little bit of privacy with the vampire. She stood by his bed, and brushed his hair away from his forehead. The young girl couldn't imagine what things would be like without Hayate, and that thought alone made her cry once more. "You can't leave me," she sobbed. "Please don't leave me..." Heartfelt pleas made in between her tears. It was all Chris could do at the moment as she remained by Hayate's side.

Having fallen into unconsciousness, the vampire descended into a dreamless sleep. It seemed to drag on for days inside of his mind, even though in reality only a few hours had passed him by. He had never been poisoned with blood thinners before and, in an amusing twist of fate, did not think they were deadly for him. Of course, there had never been any reason for him to consume foods or drugs with that specific property. Garlic was the only thing he had ever been aware of, and he would not have known about it had it not been for one of the few encounters with his own kind.

He was lucky enough to have gotten himself to the medical pavilion without help. Hayate was nothing if not determined. After all, it took a little more time for consumed poisons to work on a vampire — more than immediate injection. Enough for him to hurry to find help, especially since he knew it was not garlic and he had no idea how to treat anything that was not garlic.

Now, he lay in a dreamless state of unconsciousness, having blood pumped and cleaned, as the time ticked away on the clock in the room. The dreamless slumber seemed to slowly lift from his eyes after some time, and they tried to open against the heavy weight willing them shut. Eventually, he was staring up at the ceiling of an unfamiliar room. He had forgotten temporarily what happened earlier, prompting the first question from his mouth.

“Where am I?” he asked. His throat was raspy, and he swallowed pasty the scratchiness in the back of it.

Chris had crossed her arms along Hayate's bed, and rested her head upon them. She had cried herself into a light sleep, one that she awoke from easily when she a raspy voice speaking. Her head popped up quickly, and she looked over at the vampire who had finally awaken. She couldn't speak right away since she was too busy smiling. Chris swallowed past the lump in her throat, and reached out for Hayate's hand.

"You're at the medical pavilion," she said finally in a soft voice. Chris moved closer so that Hayate could see her. "I'll get the doctor. He should know that you're awake." She slipped her hand from his, and raced outside to find Dr. Smith. Chris returned a few moments later with the tall man, practically pulling him along by his hand. She resumed her spot next to the vampire, reaching up to brush a few strands of blonde hair away from his forehead.

At the sound of the voice, Hayate tilted his head to the side. He recognized the young girl’s voice. As she was his constant companion for quite some time now, it was hard not to be familiar with it. Chris was an easily soothing presence around the vampire, something of an anomaly. It was hard to imagine anything but blood and destruction being soothing for the vampire, but somehow it was also encapsulated in the teenager: A damning solution to quench his unpredictable and volatile nature. Some would consider his bloodlust more acceptable than his interest in taking a near child beneath his wing.

Her hand twining with his incited a deeper breath; then, just as soon as she had touched him, her hand slipped from his fingers as she left his side to go call for a doctor. Hayate blinked open his eyes, which had drifted to a close. A simmering anger boiled beneath the surface: What use had he for a doctor? He was a vampire, a being of strength and fear, and here he was in the medical pavilion like a mere mortal needing to be tended to.

Hayate quickly sat up; it brought a rush of dizziness to his head, blackness to his vision. He fell back, gripping the sheets tightly in his grasp. He would tear these contraptions off his body the moment his stability returned to him. Whoever did this to him would pay, and he did not have to guess. He knew who it was.

A ferocious scowl marked his mouth just thinking about it. He always hated foxes.

Zane looked down at Hayate, and the anger behind Hayate's eyes was not lost on the doctor. Zane didn't take it personally, though; he had seen enough patients to know that some of them didn't like being at the hospital at all. It was a position of weakness, and that was something that many humans (and praeternaturals) could not tolerate.

"Mr. Ishikawa," Zane said calmly. "I know this is frustrating, but you have to be patient. It'll be at least a few more hours before you'll be strong enough to leave." Zane noted a few things about the vampire visually, and jotted them down in the chart. It was a few minutes before he looked at Hayate again, and then over at Chris. Zane was confused (or concerned?) over Chris's connection with the vampire. While the man didn't appear menacing at the moment, Zane worried that he wouldn't always be like that. Chris was just a kid, and what chance did she have against a vampire who could over-power her?

The doctor banished the thoughts. He didn't like making assumptions about people, and he wouldn't allow himself to do so now. Chris was a smart girl, and she could take care of herself - he probably didn't have anything to worry about the two of them. Still, he wasn't sure if wanted to talk about her friend's poisoning in front of her, and he wasn't sure if the vampire was okay with her knowing about it.

"Chris," Zane said with a grin. "I've got some things to talk about with your friend here. Do you think you can leave for a few minutes?" He held up a hand to stop Chris's protest before she could start. "It's patient confidentiality," he said professionally. He turned to Hayate again. "Unless you're okay with her being here?"

With the presence of others in the room once more, Hayate trained his features to be still and free of the current emotions that brewed beneath the surface. He knew the negativity would be unsettling to Chris, and possibly even more so to the doctor who did not personally know him, so he forced the anger disappear from his face with a single outward breath. It came out more like a sigh.

"I apologize," Hayate said, glancing over at the doctor. Embroidered on his lab coat was a name. Zane Smith, it read. Hayate glimpsed it only briefly before returning his eyes to the doctor's face. "I'm not accustomed to being in medical facilities. They're a little more restraining than to my liking." He spoke in a perfectly formal manner. Good English. No foreign accent.

Hayate noted how the doctor spoke to Chris, the slightest appearance of curiosity formulating in his blue eyes. Dr. Smith talked to Chris as if he knew her. It was going to happen eventually. The vampire knew contact with others close to Chris was inevitable. Her friends, family, and mentors were people he had to tread carefully around without catching his foot in a hole. If they found out about anything, he could be the next hanged man on display for all of the town to see. He wondered what they would do with knowledge about him, but it was no good to get himself worked up over things that were not going to happen if was careful. He had to watch himself, not do what he did just a few nights ago with Chris out in public anymore. It was foolish. He knew that now.

"Chris, do you mind waiting outside?" Hayate sounded tired as he looked at her. He knew she would not like it, but it was good for appearances. The doctor would respond better to it than Hayate saying it was okay for her to remain in the room, especially when they need to speak of something private.

Chris was feeling a hundred percent better now that Hayate was awake. It was a sure sign that he was going to be fine, and that she didn't have to worry anymore. She was quiet when Zane had come into the room, and she wasn't afraid to show some affection in front of the doctor. It's perfectly normal to show that I have feelings for my friend, she said to herself. Despite that reassurance Chris knew that she couldn't be too affectionate with the vampire without drawing unwanted questions.

She wanted to stay with him to hear what was going on, and what had happened in the first place, but Zane asked her to leave. Chris's mouth gaped open in shock, and she rose to her feet to protest, but that too was stopped by Zane. The girl looked over at the vampire, certain that he would take her side and allow her to stay. His words, though, cut her like a knife. Had he really just asked her to wait outside?

"But..." she began to say. "Hayate... Dr. Smith..." She looked between both men, and she knew that they were both serious about her leaving. She made a growly sound underneath her breath, a very girly sort of growl, and turned to get her jacket. "I'm not waiting anywhere," she said angrily. "I'm going home." She headed toward the door all the while muttering her grievances in a very mocking, and sarcastic tone.

"I guess it doesn't matter that I happen to be his friend, and that I've been here crying and waiting for him to wake up. Nooooo, my feelings don't matter in all of this. I'm just a kid. Kids don't matter, and what do they know anyway? I survived a freaking war zone, that's what I know. I'd like to see them do that. I can't believe they made me leave. I'm so not talking to them! Do you hear me! I'm not going to talk to you! Make me wait outside... like I'm not important..."

Each word became less and less clear as she moved farther away from the room until eventually her voice faded away completely. Even then she hadn't stopped complaining, and it was more than likely that it wouldn't stop until she had walked all the way home.

Hayate expected her to be unhappy with it, but he was not expecting her sharp reaction to it afterwards. She was not the one in a hospital bed, recuperating from being poisoned in her own home. The girl managed to take it personally, though, something Hayate was not ready to deal with, nor wanted to. He closed his eyes, trying to will away the sound of her voice as she stalked down the corridor of the medical pavilion and left the building. If she wanted to go home, then she could go home. He would just have to make it through the day without visitors or company unless the boy, Zach, heard about his condition and came to see him. Hayate was not sure how likely it was without asking the doctor to pass the message along to the Kitano boy.

When he opened his eyes again, he shook his head. "Kids," Hayate mumbled, turning to look up at Dr. Smith. Exasperation covered every inch of his skin, causing natural wrinkles to show more prominently at the corners of his eyes. It sold the show, even though his weariness was not a part of it. He was worn out, frayed at the seams of his body and his mind. He wanted to rest more than anything. It hit him so suddenly how much he just wanted to rest.

"What is it you wanted to speak to me about?" Hayate asked calmly. He sat upright on the bed, though his back touched the incline of the mattress behind him.

Zane hadn't expected such a strong reaction from Chris, but he didn't hold it against her. She was a teenager, and they were oftentimes guided by their emotions rather than logic. He sighed, shaking his head before he glanced over at Hayate. There was a smile on Zane's face, followed by a short laugh at Hayate's comment.

"Not kids," he corrected. "A teen-aged girl. Had to grow up with two of them." Zane had fond memories of his childhood, but he also remembered the tantrums his sisters used to throw. Chris's demonstration was nothing compared to what he had seen from his sisters.

The conversation turned serious again, and Zane summoned a chair toward the bed so he could sit with the patient. "The reason I didn't want Chris in the room is because your reasons for being here are... serious." He took a deep breath. There was no point in beating around the bush. "There's no easy way to say this, but we believe that you were poisoned. We found traces of blood thinner in your system when you first came in. Guards were sent to your home to collect samples of blood, and we found a high amount of blood thinner there as well. The blood bank here is very careful about the blood they give out to vampires, and there is no way that a contaminated sample would have been given to you on accident. The only other explanation is that the blood thinner was added after you had taken it home." There was a pause. "Mr. Ishikawa, is there anyone you would consider an enemy? Anyone who would have any reason to do this to you?"

He let the doctor speak, explaining all of the details of what they had been doing since he was unconscious and in their care. There was no expression of surprise on his face at Dr. Smith's announcement of him possibly being poisoned. Hayate brought a hand to his face, laying it upon his forehead as he closed his eyes. He had no desire to pretend to be shocked, nor was it very befitting for the seriousness of his demeanor at this time. He remained quiet after the doctor finished speaking, wondering if it was best to keep quiet about names or give them out freely.

Hayate decided to keep quiet about them.

"I don't know anyone," he said, shaking his head. "No one who would do something like this." He dropped his head to the side and looked over at the doctor. "I don't keep company with people who don't like my kind. I stay away from them and mind my own business. Things are better that way." He stared ahead at the wall across the room, his expression seeming faraway. Hayate knew it was the fox. It was not the dead-bringer. Irei admitted as much to him in their last encounter. As much as it had unnerved the vampire, he knew killing was not on the necromancer's list. It was the woman who displayed such abhorrence for him, the little escaped fox.

Hayate let out a sigh. "I'm sorry I'm of no help," he said.

The patient looked tired, after all he had been through Zane couldn't blame him. It wouldn't have bothered him so much except there was no reaction whatsoever from the vampire. No surprise, no shock, just quiet acceptance of the fact. It didn't sit well with Zane, especially after Hayate said he didn't know anyone. It seemed unlikely to the doctor, and he wondered if Hayate was keeping the truth from him.

"No one at all?" He arched a brow at the vampire. "Then perhaps it was someone close to you?" His thoughts reverted to Malcolm, and it surprised him still that the one who had poisoned the sorcerer in the first place had been his own sister, Fiona. Malcolm, too, didn't have any enemies that he could think of, and he did not suspect his family or friends at all. Perhaps the same was true for Hayate.

"There was a similar case earlier this year," Zane said without revealing any specifics. "The perpetrator turned out to be someone the victim didn't even suspect. This could be a similar situation. Just... keep that in mind."

Maybe Zane could get more information from Chris. Chris was friends with the vampire, and though she would be a suspect according to what the doctor just told Hayate, he knew that Chris was incapable of doing something so terrible. Besides, how would she have gotten her hands on a vial of blood thinner in the first place? Zane rose from his chair, and smiled down at Hayate.

"We just want to keep you safe," he said. "So if you remember anything, let me know." Using his powers Zane moved the chair to the opposite corner. "You should rest for a few more hours," he said before turned around to leave. "If you do you'll be ready to check out by nightfall." Vampires were quick healers, and with the steady influx of blood into Hayate's system he would be fit as a fiddle in no time.

"No," Hayate said without needing to think, "it wasn't someone close to me." Despite being a good reader of the face, Hayate could not read another person's mind. He did not know what sorts of thoughts were running through the doctor's head. "I don't know anyone personally who would have done this, but I do know there's a lot of people out there who don't like vampires. It's a huge pool to sift from, but you're welcome to take a crack at it if you want." He seemed a little mocking with his tone, even resigned to the fact that this was normal for him. As if he expect people to hate him this much.

He was tired, though, and this questioning was a waste of his time and the doctor's time. "Thank you for your concern," he said softly. "I don't mean to appear rude. But I know what it's like for someone like me, and I can't point a finger without implicating anyone who's ever given me a dirty look for drinking blood in public or after they've seen my fangs because I happened to smile." Hayate sighed and rested his head down. "You're just trying to help, I know." The vampire turned to gaze at the doctor across the room. "Just understand that things aren't always so simple in this world."

The news that he could be ready to check out by nightfall was good news, and he nodded his head. "Good," he responded in a quiet voice. "Good."

Zane was no stranger to discrimination. While he had no fangs, and he didn't drink blood, he was a black man who had lived in the South. Though his family was respected by the military, and other military families, Zane still experienced the negative comments of racism. He could empathize with the vampire in that respect, and he could understand the attitude that Hayate held.

He paused at the door for a moment. "Believe me, I know things aren't simple in this world, or any other world for that matter. But if it were a matter of discrimination, then why poison just one vampire when there are hundreds of other vampires here in the haven. I'm not saying that you've done something to deserve it," he said, pausing slightly. "But someone out there has a vendetta against you, whether you're aware of it or not. And whatever their reason it's apparently enough to want you dead. So just be careful."

Zane thought of Chris for a moment, and he wondered just how close the young girl was to this particular vampire. He worried that the perpetrator could extend their hostility to those around Hayate as well. He didn't express this concern out loud, though, leaving the vampire alone in the dimly lit room for some much needed rest.

The doctor was pushing the subject. Hayate sensed the tension layered beneath the surface of his words. The man was adamant about a specific person having it out for him in particular. Why could he not just accept the possibility that whoever did it did not care which vampire they poisoned? Hayate knew the truth, but that did not mean he wanted other people poking around and trying to dig up the truth themselves. In the process they could dig up other things, things about Hayate that he would rather remain hidden.

He gritted his teeth behind a simple purse of lips and said nothing. Without looking at the doctor, he waited for the man to leave the room and leave him be. By the time he was healed tonight, he would be on his way home. He decided not to say anything about notifying anyone to the Dr. Smith. He preferred not to have anyone see him like this or for the news of his condition to travel elsewhere to ears that did not need to hear it. He would let the Kitano family know on his own terms within the next few days. Maybe he would wait until after their holidays. A part of him did not wish to spoil their time together as a family with his lies for sympathy.

Until he was stronger, though, he would have to wait here. Hayate laid back completely and closed his eyes. He imagined he would get his revenge soon enough and in his own terms before anyone figured out what was going on right beneath their noses.
