Saturday: December 22, 2007
Who: Max & Mitsuko
When: Late Night
Where: Storage Facility
What: Two thieves up to no good.

He watched the sunset on his porch that evening, even if he wasn't sure why. It seemed like a sappy thing to do, or at least something only an old man would waste him time doing. Max let himself go soft during his stay here, and he wanted to find a way to harden himself up again. He hadn't heard from either one of his so-called new friends, not the merman, not Riley. He didn't know where they were or what they were doing, but he assumed it was clear neither one of them wanted to waste any more time around him.

His hands itched to get back to their old work. With fingers fidgeting in his lap, Max sat up from the simple wicker chair on his porch. The sun had set, navy blue creeping in like ink staining the sky. Eventually, it would be pitch black outside. He entered his house and covered himself properly with gloves and hat on top of the rest of his clothing and took a small amount of useful supplies with him. Nothing too exaggerated—just a lock-picking kit, miniature flashlight he managed to scrounge up, and a knife hidden in the sole of his boot. It was there just for protection.

The grass was soft beneath his feet as he walked down the path outside his front door. He cut across the trees and corners of town until he reached the storage facility. He was supposed to meet her here. Why, he wasn’t sure. The rules were up to her since it was her suggestion. Hell, he didn’t even know what they were supposed to steal. Something small and unnoticeable, hopefully; they didn’t need someone figuring out their heist in case they managed to get away with it tonight.

The small white fox watched Max approach the storage facility. She hadn't been there long, only a few minutes. But she had wanted to make sure to beat him there, so she would be able to surprise him. If she had been capable of it, she would have smiled. She felt the same thrill in her she had when she had broken into the medical pavilion. This was what Kamiyama Mitsuko was good at. As much as she had been trying to deny it, she felt like she was meant for it. It had been getting the blood thinners that had reminded her of that. Meeting Max increased the feeling. It felt kismet. Not only was he a fellow thief, he was one she knew in her old life.

With silent pawsteps, Mitsuko slunk up behind Max. In mid-step, she transformed into human form. She was dressed in a form-fitting black sweater and pants, her feet in her ballet slippers. Her long, dark hair was swept up. She hid her ears and tail. She needed to do so every day to practice. Now seemed like as good a time as any.

"Hey," Mitsuko said, hoping she'd given Max a bit of a jolt. "What took you so long?" She smiled brightly and let out a small giggle. She was giddy. She couldn't deny it. "I've been looking forward to this. What about you?"

If it weren’t for Max’s good hearing, she would have given him a jolt. He heard an animal rustling nearby, and before Mitsuko could speak, he sensed someone behind him. Max braced himself, wondering if he was about to have a fight on his hands, but it turned out just to be Mitsuko. He relaxed his tense muscles and turned to face her. “Look at what the cat brought in,” he teased, tilting his head to the side as the corner of his mouth quirked upward.

Max faked a Southern accent and pretended to talk like a woman. “Well, I do declare,” he said, his voice at a higher pitch. For added effect, Max delicately touched his cap with the tips of his gloved fingers. “I was fixin’ my hair.” His hand dropped to his side again, and he smirked in her direction.

“Yeah, I’ve been looking forward to it, but less talk and more action. I don’t wanna get caught out here tonight.” Max’s gaze turned towards the large building of the storage facility. It loomed ahead, a challenge calling out to him. He hadn’t had the chance of breaking into a building lately, only houses, and houses didn’t quite have the same ring to them. He preferred this to anything else. Max looked at Mitsuko, smirking in the darkness. “Since this is your plan, ladies first,” he said, indicating the storage facility with a tilt of his head.

Mitsuko giggled at Max's tensed reaction to her. She should have known she wasn't going to be able to surprise him, but a bit of tension was good enough. "Cat, ne?" She thought about that, smiling broadly. "Well, I've always been more about canines, but... Hey, cat works." While she didn't really want to tell Max she was a Kitsune quite yet, she couldn't resist the joke about her true nature, even if only she understood it.

Licking her full lips, Mitsuko glanced around. "Well, we should probably figure out the best way to get in. I haven't been here much. Don't really have anything to store myself." She padded across the ground, checking out the building. She turned back to Max and crooked a finger at him. "Come on, Max. You'd think between the two of us master thieves, we could be in there in two seconds."

They were quickly at a door. Mitsuko crouched down to examine the lock. "Here we go..." She turned to him and gave him a smile. "Do you want to pick it... Or should I?" She cocked her head. "I could no problem... But I don't want it to be a blow to your male ego when I get in faster than you ever could."

Max looked around at the same time as her, noticing the lack of windows. He would have suggested going through one of those if the storage facility even had any, but they were smart about their security. Locked up items didn't need windows for sunlight. He glanced back at Mitsuko and smiled when he noticed the way she beckoned him to follow. His feet took the steps forward as his ears listened carefully for any sudden noises around them that weren't their own.

When they paused at the door, he leaned his back against the wall and crossed his arms as he watched her with the lock. He was paying attention to their surroundings. It wasn't as if he needed to look. "I think I'll let you pick it. I wouldn't want to disappoint the lady and make her feel as though she needs the help of my big strong arms." Max smirked again, an old look he kept with women that was quickly becoming easier for him to do once again.

The coast was clear, not a single wrong peep from the sheltering trees nearby, swaying in the wind. It might have been ominous if he wasn't so used to working in the night's shade anyway.

There was something nice about having a companion for her thievery. Mitsuko had never been much for company one her sojourns into crime. But she could definitely see an advantage to it at the moment. It didn't really have to do with making the job easier. This seemed easy enough anyway. It was just.... Fun. Having someone to tease and show off to.

She spent a moment concentration on the lock, using her trusty tools to open it up. "I can think of much better things to do with your big, strong arms," Mitsuko teased. There was something very hot about thievery. Maybe she had weird fetishes, but she doubted she would have rushed into a threesome with Irei and Sascha if not for her robbery of the hospital. If everything went as planned here, she might have to pursue Max more seriously than idle flirting.

There was a click and Mitsuko smirked, swinging open the door. "Told you it wouldn't take long." She got to her feet and swept her arm in the direction of the entrance. "After you."

His eyes seemed to casually scan the area as Mitsuko picked the lock below. He was keeping an eye out to make sure they didn’t get caught. The last thing he wanted was for them to get caught tonight. Each attempt of breaking into people’s houses previously ended in disaster and someone catching him. Max wanted something to go right for him in this place, and he wanted to be able to thieve without having to worry about getting discovered and apprehended. The punishment for breaking the law here eluded him, but Max wasn’t particularly keen on finding out.

When she successfully picked the lock, Max flashed a grin at her. “That wasn’t so hard, was it?” he teased, slipping into the darkness on the other side of the door. It took just a moment for his eyes to adjust. After all, it was much darker inside than it was outside. Never mind that it was nighttime. There weren’t any sources of light at all inside of the storage room.

Max moved fluidly, slowly on his first few steps. His eyes adjusted to his surroundings, and he saw was looked like tools and stray furniture inside. There were stacks of boxes in various corners as well. “Well,” Max said from within, “looks like we found the free version of Home Depot.”

The question was what to steal—if any of this could be carried off by only two people without a vehicle into the night. Max chewed on the inside of his lip. “If we take anything, it’ll have to be small. I don’t know about you, but I can’t lug a chair across a grassy plain by myself and expect to not get caught.”

Things had gone fairly smoothly for Mitsuko in her deceptive attempts in Elysium. Yes, she had been busted for the robbery of the Elvish jewelry thing, but she hadn't even done that. While a few folks had nearly caught her pickpocketing them, she'd always managed to avoid true capture. But she definitely wanted tonight to go smoothly. She liked Max, liked having a partner-in-crime and such relationships usually didn't last if they got caught. The last time they'd been out together had been bad enough.

"Piece of cake," Mitsuko replied, smirking back at Max. "Come on, you and I have dealt with worse than this. I could do this in my sleep." She followed in after Max, looking around. It didn't look like there was anything that good. Of course, this was storage, so most of the good stuff was in people's houses. This was just what they didn't want cluttering up their cottages. "Like every Home Depot wasn't free for the pair of us.

Mitsuko began to search through the piles of stuff. "Well, you're the one who needs stuff for his place. I was able to bring most of my stuff with me. But..." She looked thoughtful for a moment. "If you see anything a teenaged boy would like, tell me. My younger brother arrived here without anything. I've gotten him a lot of stuff legit, but there are some things no one's managed to produce.... Like... An spare computer or books or...." She opened a box and let out a small laugh as she held up several magazines to show Max. The top one was Sport's Illustrated Swimsuit Edition and each subsequent magazine was a little more racy. Most likely a husband hiding his stash from his wife. "A big sister giving her brother skin mags would be creepy, wouldn't it?"

They had dealt with worse than this when it came to security systems, but Max was comfortable with freezing a camera staring at him in the hallway. He wasn't so comfortable using those same tactics on people. After all, it wasn't technology that hindered them here. They didn't need technology here with the way everyone seemed to have super-enhanced hearing. "Technology's different from people," Max stated with an off-handed tone after he had stepped into the storage building. "To be honest, I'd rather deal with the technology on the outside than the people here on the inside."

Max found the farthest pile from the door and checked it, cracking open the first box. Wrapped in newspaper was a bunch of ornaments. Cheesy holiday ornaments. Max frowned and stuck them back in the box. He heard Mitsuko comment how she didn't need stuff for her place, only he did, and he rolled his eyes before going back to checking the boxes. So far, the contents were boring him. He glanced over at her. "A little brother, huh?" Max wasn't sure what a boy would like aside from the usual. "How old is he?" he asked, trying to sound casual. This began to feel like mixing business with pleasure. Things tended to go south whenever someone did that.

Her laugh got his attention, and he looked over again. He had to admit: Skin mags were a good gift. He strolled over from his box to scoop some of the magazines out of her hand and glance over them. "I think I'll take some of these for myself," he said, rolling them up and pocketing him in his pants. Large, loose pockets were a plus for thievery. He shrugged his shoulders, heading for a new stack of boxes. "He'll like 'em," he said nonchalantly.

Mitsuko was a bit more adept than Max when it came to escaping from people. While they were both very fast, she had the ability to transform into her fox form and slip into places humans couldn't. It had been this advantage she'd utilized when she and "Eddie" nearly got caught the last time they were out and she'd left him holding the bag. "Then aren't you lucky you have me here," Mitsuko said with a saucy smile. "I'm very good at dealing with people." She snuck up behind Max. "Besides, if anyone catches us..." She slipped her hands down his thighs. "We can just tell them we snuck in here to fool around. No one would fault you for that."

A sad sort of smile came to Mitsuko's face as she sorted through the boxes. Magazines, books and various junk. Not much different than one would find at a garage sale. But it seemed significant to her. The last vestiges of the great human civilization. No one seemed to show much interest in reviving this sort of thing in the Havens. "Mm." Mitsuko gave a nod at Max's question. "Logan. He's seventeen. I only met him when he got to Elysium. He's my half-brother." It felt a bit odd mixing business with pleasure from her side. She'd never done that herself, not really. Her business was always solitary. But she liked Max. He was attractive definitely... But more than that, he understood Mitsuko's mindset. The desire to steal. "...Ano...." She hesitated for a moment. "I'm still getting used to it. Being a big sister. I'm not sure I'm very good at it. 'Nuturing' isn't really a trait I've developed with this career."

Mitsuko handed over some of the magazines to Max. She decided to take a couple, if not as a gift for Logan, maybe for Nico. He seemed like the type to enjoy skin mags. "I have a hard time believing you really need skin mags," Mitsuko purred flirtatiously to Max. "Guy looking like you could have the real thing any time he wanted." Yeah, if that wasn't a hint to him, she didn't know what was.

Max grinned that cocky grin of his when she snuck up behind him and started touched him below the waist. This definitely had to be the best break-in job he ever did, earning a free feel up from a saucy chick. “Well,” he said in reply to her plan, “if we get caught, I’ll just have to throw you against a wall to make it look nice and convincing.” And his mind was wandering, entertaining the idea of actually doing just that to her. The moment passed when they parted, though, and it was back to business. At least for now.

The storage facility seemed to be home to many people’s leftovers, unused, or least cared for items. Max opened a new box after putting the one on top aside and discovered something different in this one. It was a box of pictures, a bunch of family photos. The same four people showed up in all of them: Two parents and two kids. Max wondered who they were and why they had locked their family pictures away. It took a few seconds for him to realize that most of the people in the photos probably died from the war or the virus. He quickly tucked the pictures back into the box. Max understood burying painful memories deep more than anyone else.

Max heard some of what Mitsuko was saying. He didn’t have any siblings. Well, none that he knew of. He always wondered if his biological father ever knocked up another woman and he had a half-sibling floating around somewhere. Even if he had, Max doubted that person would even be around anymore. “Hmm,” Max hummed. “I don’t have a brother.” He looked up when she said she was still getting used to it. He felt a twinge of emotional connection as she spoke. “Not very easy, is it?” he asked gently. It was a question out of curiosity, though it sounded more like a statement.

A grin overtook his face with her comment on the skin mags. “A guy needs his visual eye candy for those moments when the pond is too far away.” There were plenty of fish in the pond, but Max didn’t jump in bed with all of them. He was a little more careful than that with his picks. He unfolded the lid of another box. “Anyways, I’m holding out for a hero.” Max touched his chest with a hand and made an emotional face to emphasize his lame attempt at a joke.

Mitsuko definitely liked the feel of Max beneath her fingers. He was in good shape. She definitely needed to try seeing more of him (in every sense of the word). She grinned back at him and gave him a wink. "Well then... This might be one of the only times I actually want to get caught." She was shameless, but it felt good to be getting back to form. Stealing and flirting. That was what she was good at. That and the thing past flirting. Maybe later she'd give into that impulse.

She didn't take time to dwell on the personal objects. Mitsuko had a rule never to steal that sort of thing. It had no real value, only to the people it belonged to. In the past, it had more been an issue of the monetary that she left personal objects alone. But as she got to know Logan and connected with people within Elysium, she was starting to understand a bit more about the true value of it.

"It's really not," Mitsuko said with a sigh. "He's not doing so well. Getting here... It was really rough. The first time I really met him was at our father's funeral. His mother had died not long before that. I'm all he's got now and..." She wasn't sure how much good that was. She had always been deeply selfish and independent. "He's made some friends at least." Of course, one of the girls he liked was murdered and the other one seemed to have a crush on the man Mitsuko was sure had killed the first. "But it's all... Complicated. I'm not good with complications. Usually I get out of town before things get too heavy."

Mitsuko approached Max slowly. "I think the pond may be closer than you think." They had gone through quite a bit of stuff now and Mitsuko's mind was on something else at the moment. "Not really looking for a scoundrel, ne? Shame." Mitsuko leaned in and pressed her mouth the Max's, tongue gently probing. It was not a fierce, hungry kiss. It was exploratory, slightly teasing... Letting him know she was an option for him if he wanted.

She finally pulled back after a long moment. "I think we should get out of here. If we want to come back for more, I don't think this place is going anywhere."

Max nodded his head in agreement about getting out of town before things got too heavy. He didn’t stick around for that sort of thing either. He wasn’t sure if he could handle having lost family come the end of the world, or whether or not they’d even like each other. He wondered how Mitsuko even did it. Maybe because the boy was just a boy, and it was easier that way. One jaded adult to another, it was hard to connect. If one person could open up, though, it made the whole process a lot easier.

The approach before the kiss seemed like the usual flirting, which Max just smiled to. The kiss itself caught him off guard. It had been a long time since he had kissed a girl. What with all the death and destruction, kissing became one of those things of the past—not the present. Max relaxed, though, still at first. He returned the kiss carefully, allowing himself to bask in the moment before she pulled away.

She was right. This place wasn’t going anywhere. His gaze wandered around the storage facility and landed back on her. “Yeah,” he said, “let’s get out of here before we linger for too long.” Though he hadn’t found anything to take with him this time around, maybe next time he’d break into a place with some real stuff of value—or at least something he could use.

Since she led the way in, he led the way out this time. They locked the storage room behind themselves and disappeared into the night.
