Who: Nico and Zach
When: Afternoon
Where: Lake Alata'elen
What: Fishing trip!

It wasn't exactly the best weather for a fishing trip, but Nico wasn't about to let some fog and cold ruin his plans with Zach. The pair had originally planned on going ice fishing, but the smaller ponds around Elysium didn't have any fish, and the freshwater lake wasn't even frozen over. So they opted for regular fishing, checking out a medium-sized boat from the dock master and heading out to the middle of the lake.

The boat was stocked with bottles of beer (a staple for any respectable fisherman), food, and other supplies the boys deemed necessary. The chill in the air was staved off by some blankets, and magical lanterns that produced as much heat as a campfire. They had four of those lanterns around them, allowing them to relax even more on their trip.

The water was quiet with a mist that hovered a few inches above the surface. Nico had dispersed the mist around their boat with his powers, but had left the rest of the lake covered in the eerie fog. He cast his fishing line far into the distance, and began to reel it in slowly. He let it stop for a few minutes while he grabbed his beer, taking a long drink from it. A relaxed sigh left his mouth, and he looked sideways at Zach.

"Ain't this great?" He asked with a smirk. "No chicks. No parents. Just two men doing manly things." Not that fishing was particularly manly, but the sentiment was the same - girls were great, but sometimes hanging out with the guys was even better.

Zach liked the way the fog covered the lake’s surface ahead of them and all around. It added an eerie quality to their fishing trip, reminding Zach of spooky stories he once heard as a kid. It didn’t spook him now, but it felt like they were in the middle of nowhere with the way the fog hung over everything, shrouding mountains in the distance with an impenetrable, dreary white mist. In a weird way, Zach liked it and it made him feel at home. Sometimes the fog covered the land by his house a lot, rolling in from the sea. It was one of the beauties of California aside from the dense forests of redwood trees.

He had cast out his fishing line along with Nico, but placed his pole to the side instead of holding onto it. He wasn’t sure when or if they would get a bite, so if he saw a tug, then he’d grab it and work on reeling in his catch. Until then, he’d let it stay by his side while he sipped a beer and stretched out on the deck of the boat. Zach let out a content sigh, holding onto the chilled beer bottle covered with drops of condensation. “Yeah, this is nice,” he said. “It’s good to get away sometimes and just relax.”

The good thing about company with men was the comfortable silence they could fall into without assuming something was up. Men could sit in silence without saying a word, engaging in an activity like fishing, and enjoy themselves. They didn’t need to talk in order to have fun, and that was one thing Zach liked about hanging out with the guys. It wasn’t that he preferred anyone’s company over anyone else; all company had its separate perks.

In fact, he thought briefly on the Lake Monster — a great companion on the beach, playful and occasionally noisy. Even the Lake Monster had a sense of humor. She, or he — Zach couldn’t remember which — liked to splash people with water and laugh with a roaring honk. “Do you think the Lake Monster is out here today?” Zach asked. “Or holed up in a cave, hibernating somewhere?”

Nico always liked the fog considering his powers. He liked how it was cool to the touch, leaving just the slightest trace of moisture upon his skin. It reminded him of scary movies, and he almost expected a ghost pirate ship to sail through the fog at any minute. Of course, no ghost ship ever appeared, nor did anything remotely scary happen. It was just two men out on a boat waiting for some fish to bite at their line.

His pole lay quietly in one hand, while his other held his beer. He looked over at Zach, smiling when he saw that his friend was having a good time. "Yeah... I bet you can't do this with Adrienne," Nico said with a bit of pride. It wasn't like he was competing with Zach's girlfriend, but there were times when it felt like Zach preferred her company over his. Not that Nico could blame him; girls were awesome, and had so many fun parts to play with! But that didn't mean you ditched your boys for them entirely. Then again, Nico couldn't say that Zach did that in the first place; the alchemist had never ignored him in his life.

"The Lake Monster?" Nico leaned forward in his chair, and looked over the edge of the boat. His dark eyes peered into the water, watching for any signs of movement. "I don't know. It's probably down there somewhere." He flopped back into his chair, and turned to look at Zach. "It's not frozen so I bet it's not hibernating yet. I don't even know if it does hibernate. I thought only bears did that?"

A little chuckle came up from Zach’s throat, and he shook his head at his best friend. “Nah, me and Adrienne wouldn’t do something like this. I don’t think she’s a fishing type.” He took a sip from the bottle in his hand, a slow grin beginning to form on his lips. “But you better watch out,” Zach joked, pointing a finger at Nico. “You could have competition soon. Adrienne likes all the same things we do, so she might catch up to fishing soon and blow you out of the water.”

He was just messing with him, though, which was an endless array of fun for the two boys. Zach didn’t put either one of them first, not really; Adrienne was his girlfriend, and Nico was his best friend. They were both first in their own respects, but Zach didn’t think it was possible to put one before the other. A best friend couldn’t be compared to a girlfriend, and the vice versa wasn’t exactly possible either. Zach spent time with them both equally, and they were both important to him.

Which is why today was “chillin’ with the bud” day. They settled themselves on the lake and proceeded to be lazy on the ship’s deck, drink beer, and wait for the fish to bite. Zach looked out at the water as well, but he didn’t see any movement. It was creepy how still and silent everything was out there. The only ripples in the water came from their fishing lines whenever they moved a little bit due to the occasional drifts of the boat. “Well, a couple of animals hibernate. I don’t see why the lake monster wouldn’t, especially since it’s a reptile. Don’t reptiles do that stuff, too? They don’t have, um, a fixed body temperature or something like that.”

"Oh, that's right, you and Adrienne do things like get it on." He chuckled a bit, and continued with the teasing that was commonplace between the two. "Oh Adrienne," he said as he stood up. He began to make short thrusts with his hips with his hands held forward as if he were holding onto something, or someone. "Oh yeah, you feel so good." Nico was obviously imitating Zach's time with Adrienne. He stopped after a few minutes, and flopped back in his chair. He was laughing hysterically, stopping only to drink more of his beer.

Nico knew there was no replacing a best friend, but that didn't mean he wasn't occasionally insecure about it. It wasn't something he voiced out loud, but Adrienne was a fucking awesome girlfriend, and he could see Zach spending more time with her because of it. But so far Zach hadn't left him high and dry, and those insecurities were beginning to disappear.

He shrugged at Zach's statement, finishing off the rest of his drink in the process. At the rate Nico was going he would be drunk before he had even caught one fish. "You're talking to the guy who barely passed biology," Nico said finally. "All I know is that reptiles are cold blooded, and that means they need heat lamps and shit. And I have no clue if the Lake Monster is a reptile. It sorta looks like a dinosaur. Aren't dinosaurs related to birds?" He had heard that on the Discovery Channel or something in the midst of channel surfing. Whether or not it was accurate was beyond him, but that didn't stop him from repeating it.

Zach made a face as Nico imitated thrusts and said Adrienne's name. When his friend was finished with his mocking, Zach shook his head and turned back to the water as he took a drink of beer from the bottle in his hand. "You know, you're lucky Adrienne isn't here. She might think you were fantasizing about her," Zach said. "Or being disrespectful. Either way, she'd kick your ass," he added with a goofy smile. There were times when it would have been hilarious to see Adrienne actually kick Nico's ass, but it had never happened in reality yet. Zach would take bets on them if they ever did, just because.

Zach leaned back and sighed. He didn't know much about biology either, though he had passed it with a high enough grade to not be considered a dummy on the topic. "She might look like a dinosaur, but it doesn't mean she is one. Maybe she's descended from them. Like this small pack of water dinosaurs managed to survive after the meteor hit, and they evolved over time to look how they do now." It was a far-fetched idea, but then again, Zach was an alchemist and Nico was a sprite, so how far-fetched could it really be?

"Dinosaurs aren't related to birds," Zach scoffed. "Besides, dinosaurs are reptiles and how could reptiles be related to birds?" Birds didn't look like lizards, so it was the answer that made the most sense to Zach, but it wasn't like he was a science major.

"Who's to say that I haven't been fantasizing about her?" Nico could tease Zach all day if he wanted. "Who's to say that I haven't been picturing that fine ass all day so that when I'm in the shower I have something to work with. Man, if she was here, I'd fight you for her." The sprite just wanted to get a reaction out of his best friend. It was always fun to rile up Zach, and it was so easy at times.

Nico shrugged again. "I wonder if there's a Lake Monster psychic around here. That way someone can just ask her what she is, and then we'd know." Another far-fetched idea, but nothing was really off-limits in a world where praeternaturals existed. "Maybe she is a dinosaur descendant, like the Loch Ness Monster." Nico was a firm believer that Loch Ness was indeed a dinosaur.

Birds didn't look like dinosaurs, but the show he saw said that they were. He was just regurgitating info. "They like studied the bones and shit. Evolution man - dinosaurs evolved into birds! That's what they said!" Nico opened another beer, and was about to take a drink when something started to tug on his line. In fact, Zach's line was beginning to move, too. It looked like they had both gotten lucky and finally caught something. Nico put down his beer, and grabbed his pole. "Dude, I think I've got a big one!" Nico beamed proudly. He had always wanted to say that, and there was an odd sense of satisfaction now that he had. It was a cliched line, but one that every fisherman should say at least once in their life.

Nico might have been Zach’s best friend, but Zach got growly whenever anyone talked about Adrienne in a perverted way. So, as a result, his face scrunched up into a grimace as if the look alone had the power to kick Nico’s ass into the water. He knew Nico was just playing around, but if it was a reaction Nico just wanted out of Zach, then he was going to get one. “You’ll die a slow and painful death if I ever find out any of that is true,” he said calmly, taking a drink from beer. “I don’t care how long we’ve known each other. I will take you down.”

It’d be helpful if someone around here just knew what the Lake Monster was, then they wouldn’t be asking each other ridiculous questions like this out on the lake during a fishing trip. Zach nodded his head. “Yeah, maybe she is a dinosaur. That’d be kind of cool. Like all of them went extinct but a few.” Zach was also a firm believer that the Loch Ness monster was a dinosaur, too.

Zach wasn’t a science major, though, so he didn’t know how to argue about birds and dinosaurs. “Yeah, well, TV says a lot of things.” He put down his beer. “I once saw a special and they talked about dragons and how they lived and stuff, even faked a fossil or ancient carcass or something like that and made scientists pretend to study it and figure out how dragons worked. For a moment, I actually believed it was real.”

Zach saw the lines tugging, too, and suddenly grabbed for his pole. “Haha, you think?” Zach teased. “Shouldn’t you know by now?” He tugged the line, reeled it in some. Whatever caught the line was stuck, so he started reeling it all the way in eagerly.

Kissing sounds filled the air as Nico continued to tease Zach. The sprite lived for moments like this, and for the current look that was on Zach's face. Laughter took over, filling the air around them. It echoed off the surface of the water, giving it an eerie quality. "Your ninja skills don't scare me, Kit," he said even though he did stop his teasing. Nico knew better than to take it too far when it came to Adrienne.

Nico knew that not everything on TV was true. Television existed to entertain, and more often than not entertainment lacked truthfulness. The fact that it had even caught Nico's attention should have told him as much. But the sprite had seen the Lake Monster on more than one occasion, and it did look like a dinosaur.

He rolled his eyes at Zach's joke, but continued to pull on his fishing pole. "Jeeeeeesus," Nico said with excitement. "This is definitely one big fish! Kit, you gotta help me!" Nico tried his best to reel in his catch, but it kept pulling away from the boat, and out into open water.

“You underestimate my true ability,” Zach announced solemnly, looking out at the water as he spoke. Zach didn’t have any ninja skills that he could speak of, but he could flip Nico if he put his back into it. As for Nico, he’d been teasing him about Adrienne since the very beginning of their relationship, and it was only recently when Zach had gotten a token to thrown back Nico’s way. He had plenty of moments to equally douse Nico in uncomfortable questions about Umeko, his best friend’s new girl, and he particularly liked to throw the whole ‘cutesy’ thing Nico’s way.

He didn’t get a chance to do that this time, though. The boys were too busy trying to reel in their new catches to throw jokes each other’s way anymore. Zach looked incredulous as Nico’s plea for help, if only because he was trying to bring in his own line. “Dude, I’ve got my own to bring in,” Zach scolded. “C’mon, you’re not that weak!” Zach wasn’t having a tough a time as Nico, so he continued to reel in and pull back, laughing as whatever was on the end of his line struggled against the pull. “Oh, this is gonna be good!” Zach exclaimed.

The two friends could talk about girls anytime, but not when they were each trying to reel in what felt to be a huge catch. Nico pulled on his fishing pole, reeling in the line a few inches before it was pulled back out a foot or two. Whatever was on the other end wasn't going to give in without a fight, and that would make the catch all the sweeter. Nico looked over at Zach, and noticed that he too had caught something big.

"C'mon, you're not that weak!" He said with a laugh, using Zach's words against him. Nico laughed more as he continued his struggle against his fish, or whatever it was on the other end of his line. He had to brace himself against the railing of the boat, using his entire body as leverage against his catch. "Dude, this one has got to be a twenty-pounder, at least!" Nico exclaimed as he tried desperately to win the fight against the fish. He pulled while winding the reel in, and with one final tug it finally gave way.

"Haha! I did it!" His initial reaction wasn't the final reaction, however, when he noticed what it was on the other end. "A tire?" Nico eyed his catch, arching a brow at Zach. "What... the... fuck?"

“Shut up!” Zach called back at his friend, laughing as he tried to reel his catch in. Both of them were having trouble with their lines, though, and Zach watched with wide eyes as he bent nearly to the point of snapping. He tugged, loosened his grip, and tugged again, trying to bring it in without losing his catch and without breaking his pole. “Jesus, how big is this thing?” Zach exclaimed, having to follow Nico’s lead and brace his foot against the boat to successfully reel in his line.

Nico’s line gave way before Zach’s line, and Zach couldn’t help but glance over to see what was on the end of the hook. His eyes went wide when he saw the tire, surprise clouding up every corner. Zach cocked his head to the side, gave Nico an inquisitive look, and felt his line tug him towards the side of the boat with a heavy jerk. Zach hit the side of the boat and cursed, straightening himself and getting a foot on the edge again to pull up on his pole.

With a twang, his load was suddenly light and it came up with ease. In fact, it flew itself over the side of the boat onto the deck, showering Zach in a small spray of water. Zach winced, shutting his eyes, and heard the heavy clunk that followed next. When he opened his eyes, he saw the waterlogged suitcase on deck. Befuddlement crossed his face, and he locked eyes with Nico.

“What the hell is going on here?” Zach asked plainly, looking over the side of the boat.

There, in the water, was one of the baby lake monsters. It sprayed him with water, proceeded to laugh with light honking sounds, and whirled over in the water onto its back and then its belly before floating upright again. It was laughing at them.

“Nico, I think we’ve just been played,” he announced to his best friend.

Both of the boys were having trouble with their catches, but Nico felt like a schmuck when his catch turned out to be a tire. How the hell did a tire get into a lake when there weren't any cars in the valley in the first place? Nico was dumbfounded, but he supposed there were odder things he could have pulled out. Things like the suitcase that was on the other end of Zach's line.

Nico couldn't help but laugh out loud at both of their "big catches" that turned out to not be very big at all. He didn't think inanimate objects could put up a fight, though, and it made him wonder what in the world had been tugging on their lines. The answer came when water hit Zach, and the sounds of bestial laughter came from the lake.

"Oh hells no," he announced in amusement. He moved to the railing, and watched the baby lake monster lying on its back, then its belly, and then on its back again as it played in the water. Nico couldn't help but laugh as he grabbed a towel and handed it to Zach. "Look at it," he said with a smirk. "It's just so damned pleased with itself. But man... it did get us good, didn't it?"

Zach accepted the towel gratefully from his best friend and used it to wipe the water on his face and neck. Luckily, he wasn’t sopping wet, but the baby lake monster thought it grand to spray him like a sprinkler. “Pleased with itself doesn’t cover it,” Zach said, laughing a little bit at the baby lake monster’s twirling in the water. He shook his head at the little creature and pointed a warning finger out in its direction. Playfully, of course, but a firm point nonetheless.

“Yeah, we got played good,” Zach added with a grin. He tossed the towel aside and went to getting the suitcase off of his line. “So, do we continue to fish here, move to fish somewhere else . . . or stay here and plot our revenge against the baby lake monster?” Zach wasn’t sure how they would go about exacting a light-hearted revenge plan on a lake monster, but maybe there was something they could think of. He aimed a pointed look at Nico.

“You know it’s on now,” Zach said to his friend, turning to look out at the lake monster playing in the water. He added on a fake accent like he was the deep-voiced main star of an action movie. “We can’t just let it walk away. This . . . means playback.”

Nico wouldn't have admitted it out loud, but he thought that the baby lake monster was adorable. The fact that it thought to play a trick on the two boys made it cool as hell, too. But Zach was right, it couldn't get away with making them think they had caught gigantic fish or two. The problem was Nico didn't know how to play a prank on a lake monster; it wasn't like there were lake monsters back home in California to help him prepare for this moment.

Still, he had to try. He was a master prankster, and he wasn't going to be outdone by a lake monster, a baby one no less. "Okay, so Flipper thought it was funny to trick us while we were fishing..." He cupped his chin as he thought of possible revenge tactics, but nothing really good came to mind. He slipped an arm around Zach, and huddled close to keep their plans (or lack thereof) a secret.

"Okay bro, we just need to start spouting off shit. Random shit. Something... anything! Maybe like... I dunno... we could like make it think it really hurt our feelings since it looks like its playing with us. Or we could pretend to feed it, and then not give him anything. Or or or..." Nico was at a loss, and he sighed a little dejectedly. "I have no freakin' clue, man."

Their idea huddle wasn’t giving Zach any good ideas either. He blinked for a moment, trying to think of other plans besides the ones Nico suggested, but none of them seemed like great pranks to play on a baby lake monster. Zach let out a deep sigh, running his hand through his hair. “Dude, I think it got us pretty good . . . because I got nothing.” He scratched his eyebrow and shrugged his shoulders. “This breaks my spirit. I think we just got served and there is nothing we can do but be served.”

Well, he did want to actually catch some fish today. “Hmm, maybe we should congratulate it by throwing a snack for its pretty good prank? I mean, maybe if we throw something, it’ll be happy and not try to prank us again, and then we can get on with our fishing and actually catch something?” Zach was beginning to think this was a pretty good plan, and the baby lake monster would probably be thrilled that they liked its idea enough to throw it some food in response.

“As sweet as revenge sounds, well . . . I guess it was pretty funny,” Zach said with a grin. He shrugged again. “Might as well let it know we thought as much.”

There was no real way to get revenge on a baby lake monster, not when it could just dive deep beneath the waters to get away from them. It wasn't doing that now, of course, as it kept swimming in a small circle alongside their boat. Nico let out a dejected sigh, and then shrugged his shoulders. "Guess we just give up," he said. "But no one hears of this! No one!" They'd never hear the end of it if anyone else found out that they got owned by a lake monster, a baby one no less.

Nico looked over the edge of the boat, and right at that moment the baby lake monster came right up on him. "Woah!" He pulled back, but laughed heartily in response. "Christ on a cracker, I almost sucked face with it!" He continued to laugh, and then pulled out some of their snacks. He rummaged through them, but never once did he choose anything for their new friend. "Dude, can baby lake monsters eat cookies?" Nico settled on a bag of plain sugar cookies that Adrienne had baked for them (well, for Zach really). He glanced over at his best friend, and swung the bag back and forth. "It's either these or some chips. We got sandwiches, too, but I'm hungry as a mofo and I'm 'bouts to eat them."

“Agreed,” Zach said. “No one hears of this. Our reputations would be smeared.” Well, he doubted they had any reputations, but it was good to keep things clear just in case they ever wanted to be known as bad boys. Zach burst out laughing when Nico turned around to face the baby lake monster just as it hopped up on the side of their boat. Nico’s reaction was just priceless, and Zach wished he had brought his camera with them today. “Man, I should have my camera today. I didn’t know I’d need it.” There were so many Kodak moments on this trip alone.

Zach helped Nico rummage around through their snacks. Just as Nico lifted the sugar cookies and dangled the bad around, Zach lifted the bags of sandwiches and glanced back and forth between the ones in his hands. He looked at the sugar cookies Nico was holding and made a thoughtful face. “Hmm, I’m not sure if they can or not. We can just give it one or two and see if it’s okay? I don’t wanna choke it or anything.” That was a horrifying thought.

When Nico said he was about to eat the sandwiches, Zach snickered and put them back in the cooler. “Yeah, those sandwiches are ours and I wouldn’t give the baby lake monster chips. It might hurt its throat.” With a stout nod, Zach had to admit the cookies were the best choice. “Sugar cookies it is!”

The two boys were more juvenile when they were together, and no one else was around to witness their antics. They didn't have to live up to any reputation, and they didn't have anyone to impress. They were more themselves, a sight rarely seen by anyone who wasn't close to the boys.

Nico opened up the bag, and pulled out one cookie for the baby lake monster. He leaned against the railing again, laughing a bit when he noticed that their new friend was already waiting eagerly for its snack. "I think it understood us," Nico said as he broke the cookie in half. He held one out toward the water, and watched as the baby monster craned out its neck to eat it. "Now don't blame me if it sucks," Nico said. "His girlfriend made it." He nodded his head toward Zach, and stifled a laugh. Nico knew that Adrienne was a good cook, but he still liked to tease Zach about it. Besides, the baby lake monster wasn't complaining at all, and he even came forward to try and snatch the other half of the cookie away from Nico.

"Woah! Hungry, huh?" He fed the other cookie to the baby lake monster, and smiled over at Zach. "Okay bro, your turn."

The two boys took turns feeding the baby lake monster until all their cookies were gone. Even then, the infantile creature didn't leave their side. It seemed to enjoy their company, and it even let them fish without pulling any pranks on Nico and Zach. It was a good day overall, and one the two boys would not soon forget.
