Friday: December 21, 2007
Who: Katy and Dante
When: Midday
Where: Around the town cottages
What: A meeting between werewolves

Katy grinned as she dodged snow balls thrown by kids. It really was her own fault that she was getting pummeled with snow. She had entered the crossfire after all. Katy held her camera protectively as she raced by the flying snowballs. She hadn't realized that after the end of the world was the time she'd find herself being a war correspondent. She picked up a loose snowball and chunked it at the nearest kid, although it hopelessly fell apart before making its intended mark. The kids laughed at her efforts before attacking each other again.

Finally she was safely away from the snowball artillery's range. She had come outside to capture images of the snow and people playing it. She turned around and snapped a picture of the kids and ran off before they decided to move closer in and start pelting her with the frozen slush again. She took a picture of a family making a snow man together, and a picture of some girls making snow angels.  It had been a while actually since she had brought out her father’s camera. She found that she had missed it greatly. It was like an old friend, and she needed to finish the roll so she could go ahead and develop the photographs.

Someone suddenly called out, “Watch out below!”

She just nearly missed being hit by a sled on its way down from a bunny hill.  Not that it would have done much damage, but Katy didn’t want bruises on her shins. She walked a little away from the more active areas near the cottages.  When she heard a click from a shutter and the unmistakable sound of a Polaroid camera expelling its film, she turned her head quickly and noticed a man with the camera.

Had it been pointed in her direction? Katy narrowed her eyes in thought. She was wearing a pretty thick jacket, and some close-fitting but warm pants. She also had on a funny knit hat with pompoms hanging down the sides, and one on top of it as well. Her hair was down and curling slightly, but she would hardly consider how she looked at the moment worth taking a picture of.

She grinned and picked up her camera, focusing the lens and zooming in to get a good closer look at the man with the Polaroid.  “Hey there, say cheese!”  She pressed the button down and the picture was now in her camera. It was tit-for-tat as far as she considered.

Living in town definitely granted Dante more time to do the things he so very much enjoyed. The only downside was his lack of privacy - the town cottages were busier than the forest cottages, and the werewolf had to take extra precautions to not get caught in the midst of his darker deeds. He normally did those in the dead of night.

His Polaroid camera had seen plenty of action lately, taking snapshots of the women that his demented mind obsessed over. He had been lucky to find a camera with several packages of film in the storage facilities. Breaking in was easy - searching through all the belongings was a whole other story. Luck had been shining down on him ever since he arrived in the haven, and it was dangerous territory for a man like him to rely on luck all the time. It hadn't let him down yet, though, and it seemed to get better with every opportunity presented to him. Like the girl he had been following for the past half hour.

She had made her way through a battlefield of flying snowballs, dodged a runaway sled, all the while taking pictures of various things in her surroundings. Dante had stopped following her in order to get around her - he had to find a spot where he could take pictures of her without her knowledge. He hadn't expected her to notice him though, and he didn't think she would take a photo in return. A grumble formed in his throat - how could he be so careless!

His agitation was pushed aside as a smile formed on his face. "Hi there!" He waved at the girl, but didn't move from his position. Her curiosity would bring her to him, and that act would placate the anger growing inside.

Katy peeked from behind the camera and brought it down. She slipped the shoulder strap over her head and walked toward him. "Hi! What are you taking pictures of with that little Polaroid camera? Man, I haven't seen one of those in probably ten years." She grinned at him and held up her camera. "Although, I think my picture will probably come out better."

She had been so overwhelmed by how lively it was around the cottages, that she had not noticed she had a stalker following her. Considering how good he was at it, she may not have even noticed had it been a quiet day. But that familiar click and sound of the Polaroid had clued her in on his presence. Since being turned she had much better senses than before, and that included hearing.

As she got closer to him she noticed something similar. His scent was familiar, and yet completely different. Though she knew she had never met him before. Something about his presence made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. That made her all the more interested. She held out her hand in greeting as she said, “My name’s Katy Wilson. What’s yours?”

Could he be a werewolf too? Eight years as one herself and she had not met many other weres. She wondered how many of them lived in the haven. She didn’t recall running into one during the last full moon, but the next one was coming up pretty soon. And right before Christmas too, although it wasn’t like she had anyone to celebrate with.

“Are you out looking to play in the snow like everyone else?”

She was lively, and for a second he was reminded of Adrienne and that pleased him even more. His smile remained on his face - people felt more comfortable around those they considered friendly, and Dante didn't want the girl to run off so soon. "Hey, don't mock the Polaroid," he said as he examined his camera. It might not have been as fancy as hers, but it got the job done. "This little guy here has seen lots of action, and it particularly likes to take pictures of pretty girls wearing pom-pom hats." An honest to goodness truth on Dante's part, but he said it in a way that bordered flirtation. She probably would think he was joking especially since he had no intention of showing her the pictures he had already taken of her. And if she asked Dante had decoy pictures in his pockets of scenery he had taken earlier in the day. He was always prepared, like a Boy Scout, except there probably wasn't a badge for "stalking".

Dante immediately picked up on the fact that she was a werewolf, and that made her all the more interesting to him. He had figured out long ago that werewolves all carried a familiar scent, something that clued them in to one another. Younger lycanthropes didn't know how to distinguish it yet, but Dante was far from young and he had had plenty of time to adjust to all the nuances of being a werewolf.

"Douglas Donovan," he said as he took a hold of Katy's hand. He had never introduced himself as Douglas before, but he was beginning to take more precautions because of a certain vampire. He didn't need the name "Dante" being spread around like wildfire - anonymity was key in his endeavors. "No, I don't really play in the snow," he said. "It's not much fun playing with yourself." A purposeful choice of words that would no doubt invoke a laugh from the girl. "I mean, not play play with myself," he said in mock embarrassment. "It's always more fun with someone... else..." He slowed down his words to show that he realized that he was making it sound worse. "I'm just going to shut up now."

It was all an act with the sole purpose of lowering the girl's defenses. His web of deception growing with each person he chose to pull in. He would no doubt get tangled within it, but the game was far too fun to abandon and Dante had every confidence that he would come out unscathed. It was his Achilles' Heel, and it would bring about his downfall.

Katy looked up at the wool hat she hat put on her head before walking out the door. She reached up and sheepishly removed the colorful hat. She had bought it when she had stopped in Switzerland for a few days on her globe hopping trip because it was warm and she kind of liked it. Now she felt a little embarrassed because of it and shook her freed hair. "Oh yeah? Can I see some of these pictures?" She leaned a little forward as they shook hands to see what kind of pictures he had taken. She was very curious about he picture he had taken of her. It never even crossed her mind that he might have taken more than one.

She had another reason for leaning in closer to him. She was curious about the difference between him and the other male werewolves she’d known. Of course he had his own scent, that was to be expected. Everyone had their own unique sent, but there was something particular about his. She couldn’t quite put her finger on it though.

“Nice to meet you Douglas.” She watched him stumble over his words, her smile getting wider as he progressed. She shut her eyes and tilted her head forward as she laughed softly at what she perceived to be nervous conversation. She looked back up at him and shook her head. “No, no, keep going. I want to see where this conversation is going to end up.” She teased him because she thought it was very flattering when men stopped paying attention to what they were saying around her.

Katy shivered a little. Her nose and cheeks were getting pink from the chilled air and the gusts of cold wind. Even thought she had lived in Colorado since she was about fourteen, she had never quite gotten used to the weather there. She always preferred summer weather to the winter freeze. “I can’t wait until it starts to warm up again.” She muttered under her breath.

“So, Douglas, are you excited about Christmas coming up so quickly?” She wasn’t so sure she was excited about it being the holiday season when she was still so far from her family. She knew she would end up alone Christmas Eve, perhaps just drinking egg nog laced with whiskey until she fell asleep by her fire place. And then she did the calculations in her head. Even after 8 years of being a lycan, she often would forget until the night was close upon her that she would be turning soon. On Christmas Eve no less. She doubted very seriously that she would have attended any religious services that night anyways and she had no family here either. While she was born into the Catholic religion, after her mother had died, her father had slacked off in taking his children to church regularly, or at all.

"I know I'm not exactly looking forward to Christmas morning." She shivered at the thought of having turned back into a human in the snow and naked.

The girl's defenses were down. Her cute laughter told Dante that much, along with the way she responded to him. Smiles and laughter, coupled with teasing was a good sign in the werewolf's book. Every detail did not go unnoticed by Dante - all the way from the girl's shivering, to the way her nose and cheeks were becoming more pink as the moments passed. Katy was intriguing, and Dante made a mental note to keep his eyes on her.

The holidays weren't exactly something that Dante kept track of, nor did he celebrate them. There wasn't a point unless it served some purpose, and at the moment there was no point in putting up a Christmas tree or lighting up Hanukkah candles or whatever else people did during the holidays. There was a moment of silence after her question when he tried to figure out how to answer. "It's... complicated." An ambiguous answer was better than choosing one way or the other.

"I'm glad that I'm alive for Christmas," he shrugged his shoulders. "But it sort of sucks being alone." Straight down the middle - Katy could take it however she wanted. Unlike the girl, Dante just knew when the full moon was upon him without having to memorize a calendar. It was there in his bones, the familiar need of his wolf crawling to the surface. Their night of wild hunting would be over on Christmas morning, and the countdown to the next one would begin. He played dumb for the moment though - no one needed to know the truth behind his lycanthropy.

"What's wrong with Christmas morning?" He queried. He played dumb better than anyone.

OOC: I'm so sorry this took so long ><

Katy felt a little edgy around him, but certainly not enough to invoke too many warning bells with in her brain, despite what the feral side was trying to tell her. She thought that Dante, or rather Douglas as he called himself, was nothing more than any other human turned were she had met, therefore leaving no reason for suspicion. And yet...

She tilted her head and studied him. What was that blasted word she was looking for. There was something about his presence and the way he smelled that hinted at dominance despite his actions of shy, nervous behavior. Most of his behavior actually seems contrary to what she felt with her intuition.

She recalled a PBS special she had watched the last time she was stateside because it was Sunday and nothing was on the TV. Good Lord she had been spoiled then. Now there was literally nothing on seeing as televisions no longer worked. Well, you could turn one on, but without networks, it was kind of pointless. The PBS special had been about wolves living in Yellowstone. In the pack setting, there was always a dominate male leader and the mate, and they were both considered Alphas. Seeing as their ailment had been considered wolfish, she had come to assume that werewolves and actual wolves were fairly similar.

In that same TV special she had learned about lone wolves, normally males, who would seek out a pack to usurp the leaders. As far as she knew, there weren't any "packs" of werewolves. She hadn't met any anyways. The closest she had come to a pack in the past was the old man, her mentor, her brother, and her father (who wasn't technically a werewolf, but he was still her family.)

She smiled and narrowed her eyes as she brought up the subject in what she felt was a playful manner, "Hey, you wouldn't happen to be an alpha were, would you?"

Her playful banter seemed to die down when he mentioned that he would be alone for Christmas. So many families had seemed to make it into the protective barrier; she had just assumed that others seemed to have people who cared about them. When she had meet Adrienne, the only other female were she knew, she had talked about her family. It was as if somehow those important people in her life needed to be immortal so that she herself could go on. In reality though, it was probably her own selfishness that kept her from looking beyond her own nose.

"Oh yeah?" She looked a little sheepish and guilty. "It really does suck. I'll be alone on Christmas too. Maybe we should meet up somewhere after we've turned back." It may have been a little forward, seeing as they just met and she knew little to nothing about him aside from the fact that he was a lycanthrope and alone in this new world too, but at least it was an attempt to be friendly. She needed some friends. Then she wouldn't spend so many evenings alone in her empty cottage.

"What's wrong with Christmas morning?" She repeated and this time it was her turn to blush. She glanced aside and laughed a little. "You know, because after we turn back into humans, we'll be in the snow...naked." She felt like a teenager talking about something naughty during school. She may not look it, but she was twenty five damn it and she should be able to say the word naked without blushing! Too bad it never seemed to happen that way.

She sighed and a puff of air turned into steam in the cold air.

Everyone always felt a little edgy around Dante, but they could never really pin down their suspicions to anything concrete. It would manifest as only a feeling, and nothing more. Dante was nothing if not careful about his behavior in public, though that too was beginning to change. Too much captivity was forcing more violent outbursts to come forth, prompting him toward actions that he would have normally avoided. It took careful concentration on his part to keep up his facade, and so far he was doing quite well.

Her question came as a surprise, but at least it worked to his advantage this time around. "How did you know I was a werewolf!" His eyes were wide with wonder, like a child on Christmas morning. "Are you a werewolf, too?" He laughed, and scratched the back of his head. "Wow — I thought you had a funny smell to you. Not that you smell bad or anything, but you know..." Bashful, and innocent. Despite the dominant scent Katy might have caught she couldn't ignore his convincing display.

"I'm still getting used to this whole werewolf thing," he said. "I was turned earlier this year - in April - but I've been learning as I go along. It's hard," he shrugged here. "But I've been managing."

He made it seem like the topic bothered him, and he went back talking about Christmas. Katy's invitation caused his mouth to twitch upward, the smallest hint of a smirk that he reeled in quickly. "Meeting up would be cool," he said. "But not when I'm naked. I don't think I'd be very impressive especially if I'm still in the snow. But after - yeah, I'd like that."

Katy's natural curiosity came a commodity when gathering information for a story in the report's game. At least she felt it did. Many of her professors had cautioned her about going to far with siting the old adage 'curiosity killed the cat.' But she wasn't a cat, she was much stronger than any domesticated feline and she was always a little over confident when it came to situations where she thought people weren't telling her the whole truth.

There was something about Douglas that her natural instincts tried to repel her from, but because of that it made her all the more interested in him. She internally noted that he had not answered her question, but had instead moved on to asking her one. That was alright. This was just an initial meeting after all. "Yeah. I'm a werewolf." She laughed and crossed her arms over her chest. "Well I hope I don't smell bad." Douglas was a pretty charming guy despite dodging her question. But it wasn't like she was looking to write a story about anything anyways.

"You're a new werewolf? Oh my god, I'm so sorry. How are you handling the transition?" He was the youngest were she had come in contact with. When she had spoken with Adrienne, the other girl had said that she had at least already been through her first year.

Katy nodded as he spoke. "It is hard. I was turned while I was still a teenager." She sighed and closed her eyes, doing the calculations in her head. It wasn't hard. She'd never be able to forget that night. "I've been a werewolf for about eight years. My brother and I were turned at the same time."

She opened her eyes and smiled at him. "Do I look as old as I actually am?" She knew she didn't. All throughout college she had been carded every time she even walked by a bar it seemed.

She let him shift the subject as soon as it was apparent that he was uncomfortable discussing it. She could relate. She had gone through such a long state of denial after it had happened to herself. She couldn't help but grin at the idea of him naked in the snow, and she bowed her head, so that he wouldn't see the smile on her face. Didn't want to let him know that she had been thinking about that as he said it.

"Maybe not the best time, seeing as I would be bare and cold as well." She looked up again at him. "Is there a place around here where you like to go that would be open on Christmas?" She didn't know exactly how that was going to work on the holiday in this place.

Lies came easily and often to Dante, and though Katy might have been wary of the male werewolf his words would blind her temporarily. The sympathy he would be able to milk from her would help to build trust - eventually. "Yeah, I'm "new"," he said making quotation mark symbols with his fingers. "If 8 bloody months is considered new." He shrugged, and continued with his act. No one had ever guessed that Dante was actually 55 years old, and that he had been a lycanthrope for 35 years. He was more experienced that even some born werewolves, and definitely more experienced that the girl in his company.

"I'm not dumb enough to fall for the 'how old do I look' trick," Dante said with a laugh. "I've never been good guessing ages, so you should just tell me. I mean, you look like you're 18 or something, but what do I know." He shrugged, and then kicked at the snow at his feet. Dante could play the shy boy like it was nobody's business.

He laughed when she mentioned being naked, though the images in his mind were not the same as Katy's. His involved blood, gore, and death. Dante had no doubt in his mind that he could take Katy's life, but that was not his intention just yet. "I guess we'll just have to see what's open. So we could meet up at night - I usually sleep all day after a shift." Another lie, but she wouldn't know that.

Katy wasn't normally blinded, but Dante was certainly a very good actor. So far from what he had said, his story seemed like it would check out if she were to dig deeper. She really had no reason to not trust him and like most people it would be strange to assume that he was lying to her the first time he met her.

Only 8 months? So he had only turned about eight times. She reached out and took his hands in her own gloved ones. "It is really hard isn't it? My first year was such a scary thing. I didn't really understand what was happening to me. I was sorta lucky though I guess. My brother and I were both turned at the same time, so I had someone to empathize with me."

Katy laughed. "If I were like 18 then I would have had to been turned at the age of 10." She shook her head. "No, I'm actually 25. Do I really look that young? God that's such a pain." She tilted her head up and sighed heavily. "Anytime I ever went to a bar back at home, I was constantly carded. Pretty much up until now." While some women found it a compliment to look so young, Katy knew that it was because of the supernatural form her human body had transformed into.

She could feel the pink burn her cheeks as he laughed and smiled at him. Instead letting herself think about why she was blushing she blamed it on the bitterly cold air surrounding them. "I used to sleep all day afterward too. I felt so incredibly weak, but I think I'm getting used to it now." She absently pushed a strand of her hair back behind her ear and looked a little thoughtful. "There is a bar or a tavern of some sort in town that would hopefully be open. We could get something to drink, like cider maybe?" She gave him a hopeful look with her hazel eyes that had turned a shade of gray to match the background.
