Who: Adam and OPEN
When: 1:00 PM
Where: The ice rink in the market place.
What: Adam is trying out his hand at ice skating.

Despite living in Alaska for all of his life, Adam had never been ice skating. With the long, cold winters in his state, it seemed as if he would at least be familiar with the art of ice skating, but Adam was oblivious to it like he was with many other things. As he watched the people out there on the ice, he thought they looked like they were having a fun time. Adam cringed whenever he saw someone fall over or slip, colliding with the hard ice below. It looked painful. Since the elemental had never skated before, he idly wondered how easy it would be if he gave it a try.

Adam rarely thought in terms of something being too hard for him to do, so he was more likely to try it than to not try it. Finally, he mustered up enough curiosity to go and get some skates for his feet. Once he found the proper size, he slipped them on and tied them up. Then, quite suddenly, he wasn't sure what to do. Adam sat there for a long while, just sliding his feet across the ice in front of the bench. It was placed right beside the ice rink for beginners, so he was capable of just sitting down and moving his feet along without actually standing and doing anything.

Eventually, Adam took a deep breath and settled the blades of his skates against the ice at the same time. With one solid heft upward, he pushed himself to his feet. The balance the elemental had at first didn't last very long, as he found himself wobbling, and then, with the wrong move, Adam went crashing to the ground like he had seen a handful of people do before him.

His lower back hurt, and Adam wanted to rub it to make it feel better as he winced there on the ice. He pushed himself to a sitting position, sweeping his hair out of his face.

Apparently, this was going to be hard.

Eleven never expected such cold weather in Elysium. For some reason she took the haven's summer weather for granted. She was glad she'd spent some time in New York or she wouldn't have been prepared at all for this... this cold! Living in California for so long had trained her not to expect real seasons but she was really back in practice now. She was just glad there was an aspect of it she could enjoy! There wasn't too much natural ice in Southern California but there were skating rinks and Eleven had spent as much time on them as the proud Californian would spend at the beach, even in November.

To be honest, Eleven hadn't expected ice skating either, but that was her taking the praeternatural environs for granted. Ice skating had just as much right to happen as any magical phenomenon, she thought, and why shouldn't it? Not to mention it was just the thing to bring people together and smiles to people on this Winter Solstice. After watching the small clumps of skaters glide and step their way across the ice, Eleven was smiling herself. Her smile widened when she realized the pair of skates she picked up fit just right. It had been so long since she'd last skated and sitting on a bench and slipping her feet into the snug boots felt like going home again. Her eyes slid closed for a moment and she thought of her family as she tugged gently on the laces.

The sound of laughter brought her back to the present. She opened her eyes to see a fallen victim of the ice and said victim's friend helping her back to her feet. Wanting to join the fun, Eleven quickly finished tying up her laces and gently slid out onto the surface past the friends. She got a spin in before she saw someone else fall, a man. An "Ooh!" left her lips upon impact and she covered her mouth with her palm.

He didn't have anyone to help him up so Eleven, worried, skated in his direction. She dropped into a crouch and hugged her knees as she slid to a stop near him.

"Are you okay?" she asked with sympathetic smile.

Adam considered pushing himself up from the ice when he noticed a young woman skating toward him out of his peripheral vision. She seemed very skilled with skating, and slid right over to him without even a hitch along the way. Adam’s face clearly showed his awe at how she managed to easily perform what he had tried to do, making it look like a piece of cake, when he had fallen because of it. The woman even crouched close to the ice as her skates did the rest of the work in maneuvering her in his direction. If Adam was any more of a child, he might have pouted at how well she outdid him.

Instead, Adam was impressed by how well she could handle this thing called ice skating, and he was curious enough to ask her for help with it. She could show him the ropes and maybe even prevent him from falling on his rear end again if she was as good as his eyes told him she was at it. He smiled when she asked if he was okay and looked forward temporarily to see how he was spread out on the ice again. “Yeah, I’m okay,” Adam said. He looked over with an expression that said he might have been debating that in his head. “I think,” he added with a little laugh.

“I’m not very good with this. I’ve never skated before.” He was quiet for a few seconds when he realized if he sat on the ice any longer he might freeze to it. “I think I should get up, too, before I become a part of the ice rink.” Adam managed to get himself onto his knees, but then came the hard part: getting onto his feet. Adam put one skate down and did well, but when he tried to move his other leg, the skate slid.

Adam sighed. “If I can get off the ice,” he added in a despairing voice.

Upon hearing the man's laugh, Eleven couldn't help laughing too. "Well, that's good!" She set her gloved palm against the ice beneath her to steady herself. It was nice, the feel of the skates on her feet and the ice under her. From this vantage point low to the frozen surface she could watch others skate by like she used to do when she was little. Only some of these others had green skin or pointed ears or were special in other ways that weren't visible to the human eye--all of which was neat.

"You've never skated before? I think it's great you're trying it out. But yeah, we should get out of the way, too." She threw a glance behind her before she leaned sideways to watch him get up. Then she bit her lip and winced as his skate slid. "Don't worry, you can do it! You can use your toe picks to help you get up. They'll keep you from slipping. See?" Gesturing with two fingers she indicated the small teeth on the blade just below her toes. "Rawr, watch out they're sharp!" she added, making a clawing gesture with her hand as she grinned.

"Or, or maybe if you hold onto your knee with one blade on the ice and just pop up!" Eleven placed her own palms on one knee to demonstrate. She hoped her suggestions would help. She'd never taught someone else how to ice skate before. "I don't know, does that make sense? It makes sense in my head."

“Nope,” he said casually, shaking his head. “I’ve never skated before, but there is a first time for everything.” The elemental said it with a smile like he was proud he could remember the phrase for it. Since he focused very little on things like that in the past, Adam was trying his best to notice important things of people today. He figured remembering things they found memorable, such as phrases and ways of speaking, would be good for him as well. Adam learned how to speak in more colorful language as the recent months went by. Previously, he was only good taking everything he heard literally, which was good for leading into miscommunication. Miscommunication never helped Adam get anywhere, and it was all the more reason to listen to how people spoke around him more than he ever had before.

He looked down at his skates and noticed the teeth she was talking about near the toes. Adam grinned at this discovery, and he laughed when Eleven made a playful gesture about the sharpness of the skates’ teeth. He decided to give it a try again, placing one of his feet in the proper position, and then the other, and then he carefully moved to stand up. Before he was successfully up, he noticed her second demonstration of how to stand and found it more confusing than the first. “I don’t know if I could do that one,” Adam said with a measure of uncertainty in his voice. It looked tougher than the first.

So, he decided to go with the first suggestion, and managed to get upright again on his legs. Adam lifted his arms into the air. “I did it!” he said in a very childlike way, trying to keep his balance so that he didn’t fall again. His arms fell back to his sides. “Okay,” Adam continued, “so how do I move now?” He gazed over at Eleven for help.

"Yay, you're up!" Eleven exclaimed. She straightened up herself and almost hopped where she stood as she let out a laugh. She found herself with her arms in the air as well. "You did it!" It was so nice to help him and to see his reaction to standing. This was the same feeling she got when she healed others, she realized. Was she meant to become a teacher after all? Brief musings on the future of a Classics major usually included the option of teaching. Though she never considered ice skating could somehow be part of her future career. Anyway, there wasn't much of a future to look forward to at the moment if she considered the world outside Elysium...

When the man looked to her for help again, she racked her brain for ways to teach ice skating. How had she learned? What was a good way to start? "Oh!" She clapped her palms together as an idea came to her, "Okay now maybe you want to try some small steps first to move. Like, actually walking, not metaphorically. No--well, maybe a little bit.." She skated over to the closest rail and tapped it with her palm. "You can hold onto this if you want." She extended her hand to the man. "Or you can hold onto me."

And since her hand was out there: "Hi, by the way, my name's Eleven." Usually she would've introduced herself much sooner, but her desire to help had taken priority.

Adam wasn't sure if moving immediately without some sort of leverage was smart since he didn't know the first thing about what he was doing. Despite growing up in an environment full of snow, it never once crossed his mind to attempt ice skating sooner than this moment. Maybe it was because he didn't get out enough, and skating rinks were full of people. People were a thing he was used to avoiding in those days. However, it was time to let go of those inhibitions, especially when faced with the prospect of living alone and without an alchemist.

The possibility was a recent one to spring up into his life, and not something he ever put much thought into until now. He had been so dependant on Constance, his alchemist, all of his life. The idea of living without her had frightened him at first, but then he reasoned he needed to get used to being alone and by himself. Humans were good at this, and he wanted to be good at it, too.

Adam moved his feet carefully until he got a little closer to the railing to grab it. The unease left his face and he smiled when he finally did. "I think holding onto two things rather than one is luckier," Adam said, and he reached out with his hand to shake hers. "Adam," he introduced himself. "It's nice to meet you, Eleven." Some people mgiht think her name was strange, but Adam didn't think anything of it. "Thank you for helping me, too," he added with a kind smile.

As Adam's hand shook hers, Eleven let out a laugh of delight. She loved meeting new people, especially since there weren't any old people around. Well, not in the sense of being old but in the sense of being familiar. As in her family or friends back home. New friends were better than no one at all. And Adam seemed like a nice guy. Here he was trying ice skating, anyway, brave enough to try it alone and now trusting her to help him with it!

"Well, it's nice to meet you too, Adam," she said in response. She thrust her free palm into the air toward him. "And it's totally my pleasure to help you," without taking a breath, she went on, "I figure it's nice to skate with people instead of just around them, you know? Unless you're meeting someone here, in which case, it's nice to have some company at least. Are you? Meeting someone, I mean."

He shook his head at her question. “Nope,” Adam replied easily, “I’m not meeting anyone here. I came out by myself, but I don’t think that really matters when there are a lot of people out here.” He looked around the ice rink with a smile, finding himself letting out a light laugh accompanied by a thin wisp of fog leaving his mouth with it. It was good for him to make new friends, and Adam saw this as an opportunity to know someone else who wasn’t just family. All he did was spend time around family, it seemed.

“I don’t know how well I can skate along a railing,” Adam said, indicating the metal loop that went around the rink. He thought about holding onto it at first, but no one else was doing that. Adam didn’t want to seem out of place. Instead, his gloved hand went for hers. “Is it okay if I hold your hand?” he asked. “I don’t want to fall down again.” Adam sighed wistfully, looking down at the ice. “If only I was a water elemental, then maybe this would be easier.”

"Adam, it's totally fine!" Eleven assured him through a giggle as she grasped his hand. "I don't want you to fall either." It was kind of selfish of Eleven, but she sort of missed being physically needed like that. And she liked being there for someone, even if she didn't know that someone too well yet.

She snapped the fingers of her free hand at Adam's last comment. (At least, she made the gesture, it was a little difficult to snap her fingers through her glove.) "Oh, elemental! I totally know what that is." At least, she thought she did. She slipped her hand over her eyes as she closed them to think. "They. Have. Power over the elements?" she tried, peeking at him through a crack between her middle and index fingers. It seemed to make sense, given Adam's use of the phrase. A little. "I think I've heard of water elementals before? I should have. I mean, my mom's a nymph, there's that whole water. Connection. Thing." She waved her hand in circles to indicate the whole of said thing.

"Anyway, how would you handle this if you were a water elemental? Inquiring minds want to know. Especially mine."

Adam smiled at Eleven and clasped his hand with hers. He was going to try to maintain some type of balance over an element that wasn’t his own. He was supposed to have good balance and control in general. It was much better than a human’s balance at any rate. But for some reason, Adam’s feet weren’t good with everything, though that would have been exceedingly helpful. They particularly weren’t very good with these things called ice skates.

“You do?” Adam asked, the smile on his face reaching his eyes and causing them to light up. He never met many people who knew all that much about elementals, so it was nice whenever he ran into someone who was the exact opposite. He laughed at her display of covering her eyes and nodded his head in affirmation. “Yes, we have power over the elements. Our specific element, that is,” he casually informed her. “Actually, we are our element. I know that sounds confusing, but it’s easy to understand once you see us in a real form.” Adam pointed a thumb to his chest. “I’m an earth elemental.”

Her mother was a nymph? Adam was elated to hear she was a praeternatural instead of a human — and a praternatural with power over an element. “That’s fantastic,” Adam said with a grin. “Your mother being a nymph. I knew a few nymphs back home growing up. They lived by the lake not to far from my home.”

As for how he would handle this situation if he was a water elemental, Adam had to think for a moment. His brow furrowed as he thought. “I don’t know what I would do, but I know that a water elemental would be able to do something to help their feet skate along the ice. Maybe make everything below my knees halfway between ice and water?” he suggested hopefully.

Eleven knew she should've remembered more about elementals, but she'd just never asked when elementals came up in conversation--or were the source of conversation. But it was nice to learn now that she was with one. "An earth elemental, huh? That's exciting!" She almost clapped her hands together, but then she remembered she was helping Adam stay vertical. So she smacked her thigh and bit her lip as she smiled. "You'll have to show me some time!"

"Oh?" Eleven was elated to hear about other nymphs. For some reason she felt like she knew more people by just hearing about them, and now it felt like she knew more nymphs. "That's cool! My mother's an ocean nymph. Tropical weather, surf-perfect waves, that's her thing. And mine, too." She tapped her chest proudly with her thumb. "Which kind of makes my being here during winter an epic fail," she added with a bemused near-frown as she nodded her head, "But it's better than being nowhere, I guess."

"Iiiinter-ah-sting," she acknowledged Adam's consideration of a water elemental's actions. "I wish I could do that! I'd totally help you if I could." Could she? Eleven wondered. She had more practice healing than dealing with water. At her father's behest, she'd always just dealt with it the old-fashioned human way.

As they began to skate, though slowly on Adam’s behalf, he found himself enjoying their conversation. “I’d be happy to show you!” Adam said. “Though maybe when the weather is a little warmer. The plants like to sleep during this time of year and many return to seedlings, and I feel bad if I force them to wake up.” He realized then that he was talking about growing and not his elemental form. “Actually, I can show you my form any time. I was talking about making things grow . . . ” Adam trailed off, feeling a little bit embarrassed as his cheeks tinged with pink.

Adam hadn’t been to any places like the one Eleven described. Tropical beaches and crashing waves to surf had been the stuff of pictures for him. Still, he liked to picture it in his head. “Well, winter or not, you have to be somewhere,” Adam said, looking over. “You can’t be nowhere.” He thought to himself for a moment before continuing. “Unless you meant you’d rather be by the beach and the waves? We have nice waves at the beach around the lake during the warmer months. The Lake Monster even comes out to play, too.”

He laughed as she said she wished she could do that. “Neither of us can, but I think we’re doing pretty good without it. Besides, turning my legs into water or ice would be cheating, I think.”

As they skated along, Eleven reached out to grip Adam's arm with her free hand. "Oh my gosh, you can wake up plants? That is so cute!" She grinned. This was kind of really neat! She resisted to urge to hop. "I'd love to see that, and your form, and whatever else you can show me!" She waved her arm out away from her and almost hit a passing skater. "Oh! Sorry!" she squeaked as the skater looked back at her. "I totally didn't mean to do that. Oops." She shut her eyes tight as if to hide from the momentary embarrassment.

Eleven considered Adam's comment about being nowhere. "Yeah, that's true. I can't be nowhere or else it's like... I wouldn't exist or something! I'm definitely looking forward to better weather these days. In California, the beaches are good to go pretty much all-year round. Except for maybe a few days in December? I don't know, maybe it's global warming or something but it sure is a nice place to be while other places are getting snow. And Hawaii used to just have random bouts of rain..." She let out a small sigh. She missed being home suddenly. "As for here, I'm not sure about this Lake Monster business." She nodded her head as she drew her eyebrows together to show her concern.

Eleven jerked her head downward with finality at being told what she couldn't do. An agreement, and an acknowledgement. "Well it's good to know my limits," she admitted, though she knew it was nowhere near her capacity. "And I don't know if I'd consider it cheating. As long as you were able to have some fun out of it."

“I’ll have to show you sometime, then!” Adam said, thrilled at the idea. It wasn’t often that he got to show off what he could do, and sometimes it really brought out the child in him. Adam was more childlike than anyone else he knew, and it tended to shine when it came to his elemental abilities. He loved sharing those or showing them off. Adam noticed when she waved out her hand and nearly hit someone, laughing in amusement and shaking his head. “Don’t worry,” he said to Eleven. “I’m sure she doesn’t mind.”

“Exactly, you wouldn’t exist.” He was definitely in agreement there. He hadn’t traveled to the lower parts of California, but he always heard it was very warm there. He listened to her talk about California and Hawaii, another place he’d never been. It sounded stormy in Hawaii. “Oh, the Lake Monster is friendly! I don’t know why they call her the Lake ‘Monster.’ It’s not like she’s evil. She’s like that creature from Scotland . . . what do they call her? Oh, yeah! The Loch Ness Monster! She has a family here, a bunch of children. I think there’s a father, but I’ve never seen him. He’s never come to shore where the people are . . . ”

“I think it would be fun,” Adam replied, nodding his head. If doing what he did was fun, he was sure being a water elemental was fun, too. “Hey! We should go faster,” he suggested. Skating along so far at a normal pace was easy, and he hadn’t fallen down again yet. He wanted to go faster. “How do you go faster?” Adam glanced down at his skates, wondering how to work a strip of metal. Wheels, he understood, but these things were completely different territory.

"Let's put this away and make sure I don't almost attack anyone else," Eleven said as she carefully drew her free arm in. "But--Yes! Please do it! Show me maybe in.. January? I don't know when weather gets more tolerable in places where it snows." Eleven tapped her chin with her finger. She was excited about seeing Adam's powers at work and his true form, and she was glad they were already sort of planning another outing. Going out to the rink was definitely a good idea! To think she almost didn't. "Maybe February?"

At Adam's explanation of the Lake Monster, she couldn't help laughing. "A family? Wow!" She covered her mouth with her free hand to try to stop the laughter. "That's so awesome. I need to see for myself when the weather lightens up. I hope there's a father figure," she said as gulped to catch her breath, "It would be totally uncool if there wasn't one. Those kids need a good male role model in their lives." It sounded a bit silly, but she kind of really meant it as she gave an affirmative nod.

"Oh, you want to go faster?" Eleven bit her lower lip as she considered it. "I guess you just sort of push? With your weight. From one foot to the other." She bent her knees and pushed with her back foot so she moved on her front foot. "But remember to keep balanced." She skated around and before him to face him, still holding his hand. "Here do you want to try it together?"

“I think it’ll still be snowing in January, but maybe things will calm down by February? Even if it doesn’t, I can still show you my true form whenever you like. Just . . . not while I’m skating. I think I would cause a havoc if I did that,” Adam added with a wary sort of smile. “I hope the weather warms up soon. You’d love the beach during the spring or summer if beaches are what you’re used to. I guess they’re just not any good during winter, though.”

Adam never thought about the lake monsters in terms of needing a father figure in their lives, but Eleven did have a good point. “I think they do, too,” he said with just as much surety in his voice, a stout nod following his words.

He did want to go faster, and Adam grinned as he nodded his head quite exuberantly. He bit his lip and listened closely as she tried to explain it. Adam glanced down at his feet and tried to do the push without actually moving too much. He wanted to see if it would work. Eleven started to demonstrate, and Adam looked over to catch what she was doing. It looked easy enough. “Yeah, let’s try it together,” Adam said. “On the count of three?” he asked, meeting her eyes.

"Aw, sssshh!" Eleven lowered her voice to a whisper and shielded her mouth with her hand: "The beach might hear you. Don't hurt its feelings." Then she giggled and returned to her normal speaking voice. "No, I think they're fine all the way through the year. It must be my attachment to them." She set her hand against her hip and tilted her head as if in deep thought. "Though I guess with the snow they might get kind of mucky. Blagh." Eleven stuck her tongue out in an unattractive way. "That must be kind of gross. Poor beach. Sadface! I'll go visit it sometime to make it feel better."

She was glad Adam agreed with her about the need for Lake Monster father figures. "Hahaha, I knew you'd agree! You have a good head on those shoulders, Adam! Though I wonder how they must split up the household duties if the Mom is more dominant. Or just shows her face more. Hmm!"

Eleven hoped her skating demonstration helped Adam, if only a little. She really didn't think she was cut out to teach, well, anything, but she guessed having Adam not fall again was a testament to her abilities at least as someone whose methods were somewhat effective. She smiled reassuringly as their eyes met. "Okay, remember I'm right here!" She squeezed Adam's hand with both of hers. "Here we go: one, two..."

Adam laughed at her reply and couldn’t help but go along with it. “We don’t want to hurt its feelings,” he agreed, looking over with a smile on his face. “Out of all of the trees I know, palm trees seem to have to the most attitude. I always thought trees by the beach would be the most relaxed, but they’re very opinionated for trees, so beaches aren’t a good place to say bad things about.” Talking to trees was not strange in the least, and as an earth elemental, it was one of Adam’s strongest abilities.

“The father must stay home a lot,” Adam joked, “but I wonder if he’s lazy and just likes staying at home while the mother and kids go out all the time or if he’s secretly guarding their home against any intruders. Or maybe he’s gathering up food for the night and fixes dinner for them!”

The elemental listened to her countdown and prepared himself for going faster along the ice. Hanging out with Eleven was a lot of fun, and this whole skating thing wasn’t so hard with someone a little more skilled than him showing him the ropes of how to do it. Adam mentally counted down in his head as well, and once they came down to one, the two of them zoomed off across the ice.
