Who: Irei and Kayo
When: mid afternoon
Where: wine bar
What: Irei is very cold, bored, and looking for some company

Irei hated snow.

That last fucking snow drift had nearly tripped him and had threatened to sink him thigh deep into the deceptive looking hill. The slush had already slipped into his boots because of the way he was walking which ironically made the going much worse. He probably would have fared better had he known what a snowshoe was, not that he would have used them. Tennis rackets for the feet were not the kind of statement he wanted to make.

He really hated snow.

Irei had grown up on a tropical island most of his life. The weather there had never gotten this cold. It wasn’t until Irei had moved to New York that he had even first seen snow, and then he kept himself inside as much as possible then. But that was back in the days of multiple forms of distractions like tv, computers, and the internet, and he had none of those. He had been able to charge his MP3 player, but had gotten quite tired of listening to the same music over and over again over a period of days.

He needed a drink and some company desperately. Sascha was at work and had left the dogs at the bungalow. The new one, Brasco, Sascha had found sometime in November. Irei couldn’t recall exactly when and wondered if he should be worried about that. Anyway, the new dog hadn’t yet taken a shine to him as of yet, so Irei left the animals behind in the bungalow. There was food out and Sascha would be home soon, so they would be fine.

After opening the door to the wine bar, Irei made a quick entrance shutting the door behind him. He shook off the snow and slush off his coat and unwound the scarf he had wrapped around his neck. There was a fire going in the fireplace and made the wooden interior warm and inviting, and he was already beginning to warm up.

Irei wasn't the only one taking refuge at the wine bar. There were a couple of nymphs and sprites having a blast with snowball fights. Unfortunately, Kayo had been at the wrong place at the wrong time. It wasn't enough that her prided tail was soaked, but she knew that in the next days or so she would be sporting bruises here and there. At this point she was making good use of the fireplace, swaying her tail back and forth for it to dry. Comforted by the warmth, Kayo was tempted to just stay there the entire night. The thought of walking home was dreadful since it was so cold. Perhaps she should have made like a bear and hibernate for the rest of the season. Kyoto was never this chilly. Never.

As soothing as the fireplace was, Kayo felt a chill run down her spine as she heard the door open. The Kitsune thought it was strange. The wine bar's entrance had probably opened a dozen times, but the cold would never quite reach her. Was it snowing already? Kayo winced at such a thought. She turned to see what the source of that chill, scanning the room quickly and thoroughly. Her line of vision stopped at a very tall, not so dark, handsome man. He did not look anything out of the ordinary, just another beautiful person of Elysium suffering from the winter weather.

Kayo turned herself back towards the fireplace to avoid rudeness from staring, but she did make glances out of the corner of her eye. She couldn't quite feel what was up with this man. "Creepy...." she let out a whisper of a thought in Japanese.

Irei slipped his coat off and putting both the coat and scarf up on a coat rack. He took in the image of the room and moved slowly over toward the fire place when he noticed a girl with her back to him. She had a tail and ears much like another girl he knew. He walked toward her, the heels of his boots clicking on the wooden floor were audible even through the constant din of drunken or soon to be drunken chatter that always permeated the wine bar's atmosphere.

"Anata wa...kitsune desuka?*" Mitsuko had often spoken to him of her mother, but this young woman couldn't possibly be the infamous Midori Kamiyama. No she was much too young, and her tail and ears were of a different color. Irie had noticed her when she had turned to look at him come through the door. He was good a catching glances that came in his direction.

He sat down at a table near the fire, close to this new woman, and ordered a drink. "Boku no namae wa Arakaki Irei desu. Hajimemashite.**" She was a kitsune, so she must know Japanese right? From what he understood kitsune only seemed to live in Japan, aside from Logan who was only half anyways. He still wasn't sure if the kid knew Japanese, but he assumed not. Irei rested his head on his hand and eyed her with his unnaturally blue eyes.

"How come I haven't seen you around here before?"

*"You are a fox?"
**"My name is Irei Arakaki. How do you do?"

Kayo's ears perked up, hearing her native language. She looked up to see that it was the same man that had just entered. The Kitsune was even more surprised at his eyes. Never before had she seen a Japanese to have blue eyes before. Kayo could only conclude, that like many of the other residents of Elysium, there is something special about him and she certainly cared to know. "Miyafuku Kayo desu." She smiled at him. "I just moved here from the northern forests a couple months ago." She wasn't afraid to return his gaze, if anything Kayo was more fascinated with his eyes. It was her nature.

"I certainly haven't seen you around either," she said light-heartedly. "And you're right, I am a Kitsune. What about you?" She was quite certain that this Irei person was no mere simple human. Now that she had thought about it, ever since coming to Elysium, Kayo had not met another human. She knew there were a handful that were immune and had found Elysium, but so far everyone else was something else. Besides, she felt that there was nothing wrong asking that question around here. "In fact, my Kitsune senses tells me that there's more to you than those pretty eyes of yours."

"Konichiwa Miyafuku-san. You have just moved here? Ah, well I actually live down in one of the houses near the big lake. How do you like it here so far? Have you meet by any chance another kitsune like yourself named Kamiyama Mitsuko?"

Irei lounged in the chair stretching out his lean body and let the glow and warmth of the fire thaw out him out. His skin probably had a blue tinge to it when he walked in the door, but the rosy color was coming back to his cheeks and lips now that he was near a heat source.

"Ah, well I'm obviously not a kitsune. He smiled a little and blinked at her interest in him. Back in the days before the virus people had always had that look in their eyes when coming in contact with him, but now not so much. Irei had wondered if it was because the meta-humans and preternaturals of this place were just so used to the strange that he had actually become normal in their eyes.

"I am what is called a necromancer. I can speak to the dead and...other things." He grinned a little at her mentioning of his eyes. "As for my eyes, nothing so interesting as that. I am from Okinawa and both sides of my family had western blood. My mother's grandmother was American. But I'm not sure about my father's side of the family. Possibly Russian." He shrugged.

"How about you? Where does a pretty little kitsune like yourself come from?" Irei knew where Mitsuko had been from. Hokkaido of all places. Irei couldn't wait until spring thawed out the winter and it was summer again. He'd probably end up gaining weight over the winter seeing as he couldn't go out and run like he normally would. It would make Sascha happy, but Irei would end up grumpy throughout the whole season.

"I come from Kyoto" Kayo replied. "I like it here very much. But it is too cold for my taste. Japan is much much warmer. Were you raised in Japan?"

Ah, this person knows Mi-chan! "Yes, I've met her. We've become good friends," she answered. Her tail curled around her after it had completely dried, the golden orange fur glistened from the light of the fire. She grinned at his complement. "How do you know her?" What a small world, Kayo thought. She already had a mutual connection with this man.

The girl's eyebrows raised in surprise to learn of Irei's power. However it made sense why she felt such a chill down her spine when he first stepped in. A person with a trait like his would probably have a couple of other worldly beings hanging around him at any given time. "Aaah! It's incredible that you can speak to the dead. Isn't it a burden though? They must bother you a lot" she commented, "When you came in, I got creepy vibes from you."

Kayo scooted closer to his table and plopped her elbows on the surface, letting her cheeks rest upon her palms. "Of course you are not creepy anymore now that I know about your secret buddies," she started. "In fact you're very charming I-re-i-san."

"Ah, it is very cold here. I was born in Okinawa. I remember how warm it was. It was always humid too. I guess that was just life on an island." Irei looked at her and tilted his head back in thought. "I guess you could say I was raised there, in a manner of speaking."

He grinned as she asked him how he knew Mitsuko. "Mitsu-chan and I are very close you could say." Irei sat back up just to lean on his elbow and look down at the pretty little kitsune. Maybe he'd like to get to know her a little better too. "What did you do back in Kyoto? I wasn't aware that too many kitsune actually lived among people."

"It is not as amazing as it seems to sound." Her reaction to his ability reminded him a little of another friend, except Kayo seemed to be able to feel that touch of the supernatural around him that had creeped out so many other sentient beings before coming to the haven.

Irei tapped his head with his fingers. "I can hear them in here. It is almost constant, but when I drink," Just then a waitress brought him his glass of dark colored wine and his eyes lingered on the sway of the girl's hips as she walked away. "I find I am able to ignore it."

He turned back to Kayo and took a sip of his drink, nodding his head slightly. "That is not the first time I have heard that." He grinned. He had also often heard the term narcissistic when someone was describing him. Of course Irei wouldn't be as silly as to drown from trying to kiss himself or however the tale goes. He certainly didn't think anyone would name a flower after him.

"Miyafuku-san, would you like to drink with me?"

Kayo agreed, "I do miss that warm weather but perhaps not the humidity. Warm rain doesn't leave a very feeling on your skin. And I would be happy to join you." She nodded and made her request with the waitress before she got a little too far. Her lips curled in a grin when she noticed Irei's interested gaze. "Must bring out awkward moments when you're not drinking then," she mused. Judging from the way Irei spoke fondly of Mi-chan and the nature of her friend, the kitsune could imagine very well how they are close. She couldn't blame him though. The girl knew she found herself in flirt wars with Mitsuko.

"As for my old job...I used to scout for my clan," Kayo started to explain. She thanked the waitress politely as she delivered her drink, and took a long sip before she continued. The alcohol quickly warmed her throat, a pleasant feeling she enjoyed especially on a cold cold day. "It's like a field trip everyday," Kayo spoke. "What did you do in Okinawa? Speaking of which, you don't have much of a tan for an Okinawan." If Kayo had to make a guess, she would have thought Irei was from Hokkaido. That type of pale and smooth skin seemed more of a northern characteristic.

"Not so much awkward moments as it is annoying. It's not really all that fun hearing people in your head that others can't hear at all. If you answer them back average people then to think you're crazy." Irei continued to size her up. For some reason it was easier for him to do so with Asian women rather than western women. Probably because of his own physical looks being not what the average western woman looks for in a mate.

"A scout huh? Sounds like too much work for me." Irei wouldn't call himself lazy, but had never held down an actual job for a long period in his lifetime. He just wasn't terribly interested in things like that. That was just another way he deviated from the typical good Japanese boy. He cared little about the whole, and worried more about his own personal enjoyment.

" I didn't do much really." He smiled a little at her question of his pale skin. Okinawa was a tropical island and it would stand to reason that if he had been out in the sun more often his skin probably would be shades darker. But he had spent most of his childhood inside of a mental institute effectively keeping him out of the sun.

"I guess you could say I didn't go out in the sun a lot. Sunscreen also helps." He leaned back and passed the condition of his skin off as vanity. It partly was of course. Irei really did care about his appearance and he has to go through incredible lengths to offset some of his worse habits like the smoking, drinking, and sleep deprivation. "I also haven't lived in Okinawa in a while. I have been in New York for the last 5 years or so.

He leaned forward and smiled winningly at her. "So did you just live with kitsune, or are you as familiar with humans as Mitsuko-chan is?"
