Who: Nuray and Elijah
Where: The Sweet Shop in town
When: Afternoon, Wednesday Nov 7
What: Nuray comes into town because she wants something sweet.

Jay had handled her return with his usual aplomb. He had looked at her, asked if she felt better, inquired about her health, and then proceeded to dip his nose right back down into his book as though nothing at all had happened. Nuray had been content to dip into her own considerable research for a little while, but there was a nagging need for something sweet going on in her stomach. So she had dressed in what might be considered heavy for her, since she preferred going about utterly naked, a long sleeved shirt and a full skirt with little slippers. It was quite a walk from the Forest Cottages to the town, but it gave her time to think.

She had chosen to hide away from the world in the water for far too long. Long enough that she felt out of place on the surface again. The world was at best a little chilly to her, though the air misted with her breath. She played with the miniature clouds along the way. So pretty really, the curling smoke that moved along her cheekbones and curled around her fingers. So very pretty indeed.

The town was fairly quiet and she had missed the commotion of the harpies completely. Nor did she care too much to hear of such a thing. People being attacked would have only brought nervousness back. The Sweet shop smelled delicious. Funny how out of all the human foods that she could eat, she wanted a cookie more than anything just now. There were some seaweeds with a natural sweetness to them at least to her mind, but there was nothing quite like a warm cookie. Looking around the shop, she pondered what kind of cookie it was that she wanted. Actually, anything would be lovely. Maybe she needed a second opinion?

“Hm,” she hummed aloud.

The good thing about the Sweets Shop was that it had candy and other sweets like cookies and cake. They seemed a little more elaborate here, some of them with decorations and frosting that most cookies really didn't need. Elijah, like Nuray, wanted something warm to eat especially since the weather outside was chilly. It might've been his imagination, but Elijah felt that being a water elemental made him feel the cold much more than others around him. Cold water almost always felt colder than cold air of the same temperature.

He noticed the girl that had come into the shop. How could he not notice her when she was one of the most exotic looking women he had ever seen in his life. She was perusing the baked goods as he was, and she hummed out loud as she thought. Eli smiled a bit, and then cleared his throat.

"You know, nothing beats a classic chocolate chip cookie," he said without looking at her directly. "But I'm not quite sure why that one," he added, pointing to a peculiar looking chocolate chip cookie that was decorated to look like a clown. "Has frosting on it. I think it ruins the cookie, don't you?"

Nuray hadn't really been paying attention to the people that had already been in the shop, caught up in her own thinking and the need that said "cookie, cookie, cookie." Though she did look like she was a full grown adult, there were still some serious deficiencies in Nuray's ability to behave in a mature fashion. Years spent underwater and then on a boat where there was little need for discipline had helped her thoroughly skip the whole behavior thing.

When Elijah started speaking to her, Nuray looked up at him and blinked. There was always something just slightly odd about her eyes, or maybe it was just the fact that she seemed to have an issue with blinking. On land, her eyes dried out more quickly than when she was underwater and things always seemed a bit out of focus since her brain was used to compensating for the way light bent in water.

"I've always been really partial to peanut butter," probably because peanut butter was something that seemed to always be on the boat. Jay liked peanut butter and she had developed a taste for it also. Could also have something with the salt in the peanut butter. "But chocolate might be a good idea." The way she looked at the cookie behind the glass with its frosted clown face made her seem almost bird-like. "What is it supposed to be?"

Score one for having never actually seen a clown. Well, at least she wasn't afraid of them.

He held back the chuckle that was about to burst forth from her saying "cookie, cookie, cookie." under her breath. It held a very childlike quality to it, and it made Elijah smile even if it was for a second. When she turned to look at him the elemental couldn't help but notice the way she blinked at him, almost as if she were trying to bring him into focus or something. He didn't ask her about it though, and just smiled when she mentioned peanut butter.

"I think they have peanut butter in here somewhere," he said as he looked through the glass. It took a second or two before he spotted it, and this time it was oblong shaped and decorated like a football - white frosting used for the 'strings'.

"That is supposed to be a clown," he said with a smirk. Most people recognized clowns off the bat, but this girl seemed completely unfamiliar with them. "What? You've never seen a clown before?" Elijah, as secluded as he was for the earlier part of his life had at least been to the circus a couple of times. He had even seen movies with clowns in them, and they could be found in other places in society. Apparently, this girl hadn't been out much in her life, and that piqued the elemental's curiosity.

"Where are you from?" He asked with a raised brow. "If you don't mind my asking."

Nuray had simply never really seen clowns. It wasn't the kind of thing that Jay would bother much with on the boat and when they weren't on the boat, they were concerned with supplies, not going to things like a circus. Now footballs she had seen before. She had even once made the mistake of asking why there was football and football. That had been a long discussion and the only thing she had really gotten out of it was that in one sport only one person was allowed to use their hands while in the other everyone could use their hands.

Thankfully, she was never going to be called to officiate on any such thing. Nuray remembered just enough of the rules of each to make major mistakes with either one.

"No, I've never seen a clown before." Her lack of information was never something she was afraid of. She would be the first one to tell you if she didn't know. Because she wanted to know and the only way to find out was to ask questions. "I'm from Alanya, Turkey." As if that answered everything. Then since she knew full well that it didn't answer everything, she said. "It's to the east of here. South east to be exact on the Mediterranean."

Nuray was more interested in cookies than she was in where she came from at the moment. And just because he had pointed out the one with the clown, she decided that she wanted the clown one. "Can I have that one, please?" Her manners were at least good and she waited for the person serving to give her the cookie before saying, "Thank you." Then she proceeded to bite into the side of the clown's face. "A cookie with cake icing. Interesting."

Elijah hadn't met very many people who had never seen a clown before so it was interesting to him that this girl was one of the very few. He didn't hold it against her or anything; on the contrary, he found that it made him even more curious as to the things she had seen. The fact that she was from Turkey only added to that fact. Elijah had never been to the countries in the Mediterranean, his life restricted to the places his alchemist wanted to go. He supposed he could have gone after Aubert passed, but it just wasn't on his mind at that time. Considering the current state of the world, maybe he should have gone when he had the chance.

Elijah smiled when the girl chose the clown cookie, and then watched as she took a bite out of it. The elemental had tried the decorated cookies before and found that they weren't to his liking. Still, there was something about the way that the girl ate the cookie that made it seem more appealing that usual.

"Interesting is one way to put it," he said before he extended a hand toward her. "I'm Elijah." A simple introduction on his part but only because he was interested in learning the girl's name.

He held out a hand to her and she reached out to take it, totally overlooking the fact that she had some icing on the ends of her fingers. Elijah would probably end up with bright blue smudges on the back of his hand from her grip.

"Nuray," she gave with a bright smile. "It's a pleasure." Her English had a slight accent to it that said that though she spoke it quite well, it wasn't her first language. Of course, her first language was Turkish. What she considered to be one of the most beautiful languages in the world, no personal bias at all there.

"Where are you from?" Since he'd asked where she was from, it only seemed fair to ask the same of him, right? Then as if she remembered the fact that she had gotten a cookie, she offered him a piece. "Did you want some?"

The kind of thing that a five year old might offer when they were given a treat. Or at least they would if they had been taught somewhat decent manners.

Elijah looked down at his hand and the blue smudges that were left upon his skin. It was something that would have bothered him under other circumstances, but he had a feeling that the girl wasn't exactly used to societal norms so it was okay that she had smeared blue icing on the back of his hand.

"Nice to meet you, Nuray," he said. Elijah noticed her accent from the first moment she spoke, and he already thought that it sounded beautiful. He had never had the privilege of visiting Turkey, or ever meeting anyone who was Turkish until this moment with Nuray. Elijah could only speak French and Spanish, but he was fairly certain that he was rusty with those languages since he hadn't spoken them in a while. It wouldn't be hard to pick them back up, of course, but he hadn't thought about that lately.

He raised his eyebrows at her question. "Me? I'm from Spain," he said. It was where he was created, at least. He wondered how she would respond if he told her that he originated from the water that covered the earth. He had a part of every sea, ocean, lake, river, and stream around the world. He was an elemental, and he was water itself. But an elemental in human form still had to eat, so he took the piece of the cookie she offered him and grinned.

"Thank you." Elijah popped it into his mouth and chewed it slowly. Yeah, it was a little too sweet for his tastes and he wondered how the girl could stand it. The elemental then ordered the peanut butter cookie from the person behind the counter. Before he even took a bite from it, he broke off a piece for Nuray. "Peanut butter?" He held it out for her in his palm. "You said you liked it, right?"

Nuray didn't think about the icing because while she felt it on her hands, there was nothing wrong with getting a little dirty. This coming from a woman who could wallow in the mud at the bottom of the sea or the lake without feeling the least bit self conscious. Her deep brown coloring when she was a mermaid made staying near the bottom easy and even necessary.

"Spain," she knew where the country was because she had dealt with Jay long enough to have had the place pointed out a time or two. The old man preferred to deal with the Middle East and Egypt, but that didn't mean that he didn't give her some significant bits of history from other places. "From what I heard it is very pretty there."

If he told her that he came from the water, she would probably just find it fun. Nuray found most things fun if only because her general nature was to be happy and willing to see the bright side of life. That had been dampened recently since death was not something that she dealt with very well, but now the bubbles in her personality were back. It made her happy to make connections with people.

Nuray loved sweet, probably because it was something that she couldn't get underwater to the same degree and thus she had developed a taste for it when she could have it. The only thing she didn't like about the icing was that it seemed to have a mind of its own and want to be all over her hands and even left a smudge on her face which she wiped with the back of her hand and only proceeded to make worse. White icing smudged at the side of her mouth like she just might be rabid. However, with that smile, no one was going to get too upset. "Yes, I really do like peanut butter." More sweet. Not that she needed more sweets. She took the offered piece and popped it in her mouth.

"I always miss this when I go stay in the water." Confections were perhaps the only human food that she would consistently come out of the water for.

"Spain is beautiful," he said with a smile. "But it's been a long time since I've been there." Elijah thought of his 'birth' country fondly, the memories he had there were few but he enjoyed them. Most of his early life had been spent in an underground laboratory where he read and memorized Aubert's research, but even that did not stop him from sneaking out and enjoying his environment. He explored many things without his alchemist's knowledge, and had even gone into town many times to interact with the people there. He could speak Spanish fluently thanks to his ability to learn things quickly. The more time he spent around the Spaniards of the area, the more he learned about the language and the vernacular. Elijah never revealed it to Aubert, and the alchemist never thought to ask him about it.

The smudge across her cheek forced a smile to form. He held back the chuckle even after she took the piece of the peanut butter cookie and popped it into her mouth. Elijah pulled napkin from a nearby holder and held it out to Nuray. "You've got a little," he paused to gesture to her mouth and cheek. "Icing." He would have wiped it off for her, but it was a little too personal of an action for him to take. He just waited for her to take the napkin so she could clean it off herself.

"So you must be a mermaid," he said after a few minutes. "Or a selkie. Those are the only two praeternaturals that stay in the water for long periods of time, that I know of anyway." The idea that she was one of those praeternaturals made him feel a little more connected to her in a small way. He didn't think much on it though; it would take more for Elijah to fully allow himself to connect with someone, though it was a start.

The oops look was in her eyes when she grinned, somewhat nervously, at the fact that she had icing on her face. Nuray was good at using her whole face to express her feelings, but one could find so many things in her eyes at any point in time. Then she took the napkin and cleaned her face. White icing against deep brown skin is a pretty obvious thing when you get right down to it. But then again, any bright color was going to pop up beautifully.

"Mermaid," she had met selkies before, but hadn't actually gotten a chance to swim with one. She was used to mermaids, merman, and sirens.

There was a little bit of surprise in the fact that he had managed to guess what she was so quickly. Granted, most people wouldn't have understood her initial comment in order to start thinking about it in first place. "So if I'm a mermaid, what are you?" The fact that he might be just plain old home grown human didn't escape her, but there was something about him that said more than human.

Just a feeling.

Elijah already admitted to himself in the beginning that Nuray was exceptionally beautiful. He remembered the women from Spain, the ones he would see in the towns or on the shore. Their dark hair would frame their faces, a contrast to their medium to light tan complexion. Nuray held similarities to those women, except she was much more exotic. Did he mention beautiful, too?

It figured that she was a mermaid. The elemental could imagine what she looked like beneath the water. The more he thought about it, the more being a mermaid suited her. How could he even think she was a selkie, especially since there were no seal populations in the area around Turkey or the Mediterranean (not that he knew of, at least). "So you were born in the Mediterranean Sea, then," he stated matter-of-factly. The waters of the Mediterranean were warm; he remembered from the time he and Aubert had made a trip to Greece shortly before they moved to the United States.

Her question brought forth a chuckle, and he took a bite from his cookie to delay his answer. "Me?" Elijah liked to play the fool at times, especially when it was a way to tease a pretty girl. "Let me think," he said with a smirk. "Oh right! I'm an elemental," he said with a smile. "Water." He wasn't sure if the girl was familiar with his kind - elementals were rare only because alchemists were rare. It was even more rare to find an elemental who had been released from their alchemist while still retaining their powers.

Nuray didn't judge based on sight, but that was only because she had been raised in a culture that didn't so much look at what a person looked like as much as what they could do. Abilities and competencies were so much more important. However, that was not to say that she didn't notice at all what Elijah looked like. He was a good looking individual but for now she was just interested in assuaging her curiosity.

"Yes," she had been born in the Mediterranean. "Second child of five." Her parents and her siblings were still alive somewhere as far as she was concerned and she would believe that until she saw something that said different. The sea had been her whole life, though she had lived close enough to land to go up. Humans had fascinated her. History more than the humans themselves.

Information was perhaps her single greatest weakness, she wanted to know everything there was to know about everything and everyone. Nuray was curious to the point of trying things that some people considered inherently dangerous. "An elemental," she returned his smile. "There are so many stories about creatures like that, though most of them seem to be the elemental itself made into an almost human form. How is it that you have skin?" Yes, she was being nosy; however, she had a hard time helping it. She was just interested and she showed it by smiling and reaching out to touch him as if to find out if he would give like water did.

There were times when Elijah wondered what it would be like to have siblings. He lived his life as an 'only child', though he didn't start off that way. He was created for the purposes of being an assistant. Aubert didn't really acknowledge Elijah as a person until they had spent several years together, and it took several more years before they saw one another as family. He had the urge to ask her about the rest of her family, but he knew so many people in the haven had been separated from their loved ones that talking about it was often difficult.

"My alchemist created this body," he began to explain. "And then I was bound to the body through a complex ritual." He could go into full detail if that was what the mermaid wanted, but it would have taken many many hours to explain the entire ritual, and even then there would be some things the girl wouldn't understand unless she had an intimate understanding of alchemists themselves. "And then through another complex ritual I was freed from my alchemist," Elijah explained further before he made his way toward an empty table by the window. He invited Nuray to join him by holding out the chair for her without explicitly saying the words.

"I'm still able to return to my elemental form, though, unlike so many other freed elementals." If there was anything that was Elijah's weakness it was alchemists and talking about their work. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge just so long as someone was willing to listen. It was one of the few times he was more himself, and it was rare to see him so candid and open.

If he asked about her siblings, she would probably tell him more than he wanted to know about being the oldest girl in a family. It meant there was a lot of assisting in child rearing and gathering food and trying to explain to children why humans felt the need to wear swimsuits in the water when they had perfectly good bodies, or at least some of them did. Fat was not something that merpeople dealt with a lot, so heavyset people just looked out. Granted, constant motion sort of made it hard to get fat.

Nuray was polite enough not to start asking questions immediately. That did not keep her from being very, very interested in what Elijah had to say. An honest to goodness elemental created by an alchemist and turned loose in the world. She looked like a child who was being told an absolutely fascinating bedtime story. A mixture of interest, awe, and maybe just a hint of disbelief under the surface. Things like that didn't happen, so thought the mermaid who had been raised off the coast of Turkey. She considered herself normal, as if any supernatural creature could really be normal. However, when you were used to deal with mermaids and mermen, they became as normal as seaweed which might as well be bread in the human world. Every human culture had some form of bread, it was just a given. Every merculture had some kind of seaweed involved in their diet, at least as far as she knew, there were probably some places that didn't, but it seemed extremely hard to believe.

Once he stopped, she pulled her thoughts together, since the questions were practically crawling over each other to get out. "So there are a lot of you, elementals?" It was easiest to concentrate on the most recent thing said, at least for the moment. Soon she would probably go back to the how he was made. How children were made was hardly a major topic of discussion, sex was a natural part of life so it was never really hidden from the children, but he made it sound like his body was made and then he was made separately which was something very different from what she knew of sex.

The expression on Nuray's face was enough of a reason for Elijah to keep talking. He found that he enjoyed speaking with someone when they seemed truly interested in hearing what you had to say. He had encountered a few people in his life where the boredom was written all over their features and it annoyed the hell out of him. Elijah often walked away from people like that, choosing to be alone than in the company of someone who thought themselves too good to listen.

But Nuray wasn't like that. He saw the awe and interest in her eyes, and he could tell that she wanted to ask questions but was waiting until he was finished talking. It was endearing, and he would probably answer any question she had just as long as he had an answer for it.

"A lot of elementals?" He repeated just to be sure he understood her question. Elijah didn't know of very many elementals who were like him - given a body while still retaining their full power. He was the only one, as far as he knew. "Elementals exist naturally in nature," he said finally. "But we don't have memories or real consciousness in that form. Only when we are bound to a body do we have the ability to remember and learn. But if you were asking if there were other elementals like me, I would have to say yes... but they are probably still bound to their alchemist."

One of the café workers walked by then and Elijah asked him to get them both some hot tea. "If an elemental ever gets released from their alchemist, though," he said once the worker left. "That elemental becomes mortal - a human - and their powers are lessened. They become what humans call mages." The young man returned quickly with two empty cups and a ceramic kettle filled with tea. Elijah poured the liquid into each cup, and offered one to Nuray. He took a sip and then smiled at the girl; he paused to give her time to ask her questions.

"Oh," she said in answer to the idea that elementals became human and turned into mages. Amazingly, she picked up the teacup with actually looking at it and didn't immediately drop it despite the fact that she had to put it down quickly because it was hotter than she had initially expected. "Oh," silly girl. Not thinking, she stuck two of her fingers in her mouth.

Her mind was running through the implications, if magic in humans came from elementals who were made human, where did merpeople come from? Were they made somewhere and then turned loose to become all the tribes and cultures of mers that were around now? It was an interesting thought that she didn't share immediately. More than likely, she'd toss it at Jay later and see what he had to say. It might get him to look up for more than a few seconds. "Do you miss your alchemist? Can you miss people? Like family?" If he was essentially human, then of course he could miss people, but she wasn't sure how human one had to be in order to be considered human, so it seemed like a good question to ask.

"Gotta remember not to grab things without thinking about it first," she didn't blush in embarrassment at her behavior, but seemed more content to let the happening pass by unremarked upon.

Elijah didn't think to warn the girl about the hot tea, or the fact that the cup would be hot. He felt guilty, though, when he noticed that she had picked up the cup only to put it down almost immediately. Putting her fingers in her mouth gave Elijah other ideas, though he quickly diminished those thoughts from his mind.

Her question brought forth a smile from the elemental. Missing Aubert wasn't something that he admitted very often, but that didn't mean he didn't miss the old man. He was, after all, the only family that Elijah had, and probably the only family the elemental would ever have in his life. He was very capable of falling in love, having children, and doing all the things that normal humans did, he just hadn't done any of those things yet.

"Yes, I do miss him sometime," he said though he couldn't help but chuckle a bit. "And yeah, I can miss people. We have feelings just like everyone else," he told the mermaid. "We're essentially human when we're in this body." Though how exactly he was a human he couldn't explain. Oh, Elijah could explain the pure alchemy of it all - the process of gathering all the necessary ingredients for a human body, and what exactly the alchemist had to do afterward. He could tell Nuray about how tiring the ceremony was, and how much experience the alchemist would need before he could perform such a ritual. The only thing that Elijah couldn't explain was the presence of a soul, and feelings. He did not have these things when he was just an elemental; at least, he had no memory of having them. It was something that he had pondered on many a night during his existence.

"Are your fingers okay?" He asked when his attention was taken back to them. "Do you want some water instead?"

"Oh, I'm fine," she replied quickly. "I just have a bad habit of not paying attention to other things when a person is talking. I'm so wrapped up in the conversation that I miss everything else. And then things like this happen." Now she seemed like she might be a little embarrassed by the fact that she didn't quite seem to have it together. However, the little bit of a blush it brought up was gone so quickly that it almost seemed as if it hadn't happened at all.

Water, tea, beer, alcohol...liquids one could imbibe. Nuray didn't really drink because alcohol had a diuretic effect and she couldn't really afford to drink pure water. Living out on the ocean that hadn't been an issue, she could always just go drink the water there. Here, she had to be a little more careful since most of the water was for the normal people. However, she had found that no one raised an eyebrow at the fact that she would ask for a glass of water and a shaker of salt.

"No, that's okay. I can drink tea. When I'm not burning my fingers with it." Which was the honest truth, and she even managed to like tea. "If you go away from the water for a while, do you miss it?" She realized since being on land that she missed the water at times. Of course, there was the fact that she'd never been away from it for so long. The stopovers for supplies for Jay generally lasted a day at most. The trek from the sea to the haven overland had been extremely long to her. Long to Jay as well unused as he was to walking such long distances.

Nuray's attention to the conversation certainly impressed Elijah. His experiences with young (or younger) women had mostly ended with them finding him boring, or that the talked too much. It was one of the reasons he had grown more introverted over the years, and why he was more sarcastic to those he randomly met on the street.

The mermaid, however, didn't deserve to see that side of his personality. Elijah respected those who showed him respect in return, and since Nuray seemed truly interested in the things he had to say he felt no reason to deny her the questions she asked. He took a sip of his tea as he pondered over her next question. He made a 'hmmm' sound as he thought, and then nodded a bit.

"I usually try to get back to the water at least once a day," he said. "But I cannot stay there indefinitely. I'm bound to this body so I have to periodically come back to it," he said honestly. He already knew what Nuray's answer would be without having to ask her out loud. She was a mermaid, and she could only go a short amount of time without precious water. "What about you," Elijah asked anyway. He wanted to keep the conversation with Nuray going, and the best way to do that was to ask questions in return. "Is there anyplace in the world you miss most?"

"I miss the ocean," that wasn't actually a place since the ocean, the sea, the interconnected body of water ran around the world. "The saltwater lake is nice, but I miss the ocean, mostly near where I grew up. I've always been able to go back before and now it feels like I can't."

Part of her also wanted to find out if her family had gone into the deep water and stayed there to wait out what was going on above the surface. That was generally what they did, choosing to escape into the water rather than deal with the things that humans did to themselves.

All said without a lot of sadness. There was some underlying the admission, but it seemed as if she were okay with the idea for the most part. This time when she picked up her tea cup, she knew it was still fairly warm and blew across the top before taking a sip. "One day thought, in the meantime, I have the saltwater lake, and then there is supposedly an abandoned palace that I have yet to go see. I love history, so I should think taking some time to go through there will be fun."

Surprisingly enough Elijah understood Nuray's feelings. The ocean, the water that covered seventy-percent of the Earth's surface, was the one thing that Elysium did not have. They were essentially disconnected from it with only small rivers and channels connecting them to it. Elijah inherently knew every path that water took. He could find his way anywhere just by "communicating" with the water around him. He was the water, and what it knew he knew.

"You'll get to go back one day," he said. He felt like he needed to comfort her for some reason. There was that love of water that connected them, but also because she seemed like she could be fragile. No, Elijah didn't know Nuray very well at all to be sure of that assumption, but he didn't have to be in order to feel suddenly protective.

It was unusual for the water elemental to feel that way about anyone, and he recognized it as soon as it cropped up. He was normally emotionally detached when he took up arms for the sake of another person. Emotions had no bearing in certain situations. And yet here they were, for this mermaid, and it confused the hell out of Elijah. He dismissed the feelings and confusion, and focused on being neutral.

"The saltwater lake is nice," he said. "I was out there the other day. Ran into an old friend of mine." He didn't elaborate on the subject of his friend, though, choosing to speak words that were out of his mouth before he fully thought them through. "We should go together." Why he just invited the girl was beyond him, but the invitation was out there now, and he couldn't take it back. "To the palace, I mean. I haven't been there, either."

There were definitely moments when Nuray could be fragile. However, she tried to keep those moments few and far between. Probably because of just how off they felt. When she felt out of sorts after the killings, she had retreated to the water to be alone knowing Jay would worry but also he couldn't follow her. Jay was not about to go swimming in the wintertime. He was getting toward old age which made doing such a thing a truly bad idea.

The Palace was like a hanging carrot, swinging back and forth in front of her beckoning her on to something. It would be a lovely thing, to wander the halls, touching things that were ancient beofre her father's father was born.

Yes, Nuray was a history nut and happy to be that way. The kind who would take paper and charcoal to make rubbings so that she could go back and study them later.

"That might be fun," she really did think that wandering around in a moldering old ruin was fun. Of course, she had gone through hundreds of wrecks under the sea, looking for bits and pieces of things. "Just to see. I don't know a whole lot about elves, but one can learn so much from the structures left behind." It was one thing to talk to a living person and another to look at the relics of former lives.

History was fascinating, but Elijah couldn't say that he was nutty about it. He had to study the history of alchemy for so long that it turned him off to learning history about anything (or anyplace) else. It was sad since there was so much history that Elysium itself had to offer; the type of history that no other place in the world had. Nuray obviously was excited at the prospect, and Elijah wasn't sure if he could deny taking her now.

"Yeah... I don't know much about elves, either," he admitted. They were one of the more mysterious of the praeternatural species, and the only real way to learn about them was to be amongst them, read from their history books, and explore their relics. Nuray had the right idea about exploring the abandoned palace, and she could probably glean more about elves from that alone than Elijah could any day.

"When did you want to go?" He was doing something uncharacteristic again, but like earlier he couldn't stop the words from coming out of his mouth. He was inviting her to go to the palace with him as her escort. Those weren't his exact words, but it was implied. The elemental sipped his tea slowly, watching the girl from the top of his eyes. He really needed to stop staring at her.

"We should go for Christmas, unless you have plans." Why Christmas? It would give Jay the cottage to himself. The old man always seemed morose for Christmas and Nuray had taken to staying out of the way when he got that way. She loved him too much to pry into his personal problems and he certainly seemed to have no interest in talking about whatever it was that made him retreat from the world during the Christmas season.

For Nuray, Christmas was a day that she knew about and Jay occasionally remembered to give her something, but she didn't have the childhood memories of Christmas trees and such, presents and other things, it was just a day that others thought was important.

Her tea had cooled enough to be able to drink it without fear of scalding her tongue, or further burning her fingers. It was actually rather tasty.

Though most considered Nuray flighty and as such incapable of the advanced planning necessary for expeditions, she was already making a mental list of the things she would need to bring with her. First and foremost was a notebook. Then there was some paper and charcoals to do rubbings, since she was not the kind of person to want to destroy something in order to learn about it. That was just not her way.

Elijah shook his head. "No, I don't have any plans for Christmas." He had almost forgotten that it was nearing that particular holiday. Like Nuray he didn't have any childhood memories of trees and presents, and the times he and Aubert did celebrate Christmas were few and far between. There wasn't much to their celebrations either, just a simple exchange of gifts.

Elijah never understood why it was so important to give gifts on Christmas when he could give them anytime during the year. Were they really that much more special when given on December 25th than any other day? Elijah didn't think so, so it never bothered him when they didn't celebrate at all.

There may have been moments when Nuray seemed flighty, but Elijah did not hold that believe of the girl overall. The elemental knew that things were not always what they appeared to be, and that mostly applied to people. He didn't plan on bringing anything, but had he known that Nuray was he would have thought it was cute.

"Christmas it is," he said with a smile. "We can go in the morning. I can pick you up, if you like."
