Who: Hayate and Irei
When: Afternoon
Where: The pond in the middle of the town cottages.
What: Irei has a threat to deliver to Hayate.

Hayate had been in an agreeable mood as of late, and there were few things that could break the peaceful state of his mind. Despite the recent murders in the haven, it seemed Hayate walked with a light step and smiled kindly to those he did not know in passing. A biting chill still covered the land, and though it did not bother him much, Hayate dressed warm all the same. As of now, he was walking by the pond amidst the town cottages, surveying the calm scenery of the residential area. People were happy here, and most of them minded their own business, but he noticed the tension rising in the air due to the death of the two fae women. Of course, the tension did not affect him negatively; it put a spring in his step, if anything.

Shadows fell along the ground where he walked, and he paused as he glanced up at the sky above. He noticed clouds forming in the sky and knew it would soon be overcast because of them. The wind appeared to be changing directions as well, and Hayate wondered if a storm was on the way. It was quite possible a storm would be coming to create a blanket over the land, and if that were the case then he would need to find shelter soon.

Of course, others might think of the clouds in another way. There were those who were superstitious and believed in old things, though Hayate did not believe in anything but himself. He decided he would return home rather than be caught in a downpour during the cold weather, but the sight of familiar face nearby quenched the idea as soon as it came.

“You,” Hayate simply said, referring to the other man in a scornful tone. Perhaps the clouds were something to be superstitious about, if this encounter coincided with them.

"Me. You look a little surprised Hayate-san. Did you miss me?." Irei took the cigarette out of his mouth and smiled at him.

Irei had been out hoping he would find Hayate at some point. He had checked the cafe, the wine bar and was basically making the rounds around the town hoping he would bump into him. He wanted to inform Hayate about the seance he was planning for the next night. Was it possible that Irei had a death wish? Something about Irei got incredibly excited when he thought about meeting with the vampire once again.

Or better yet the vampire who was part fae.

Irei had woken up from that night with Mitsuko at the wine bar barely able to recall much of what had transpired between the two of them. The parasitic ghost was always there hoovering over him when he woke up and was quick to repeat what Irei had found most important about the conversation with Mitsuko. Hayate was part fae.

Irei took another drag from his cigarette before flicking the ashes on the ground carelessly. “For a vampire who does not want anyone to know about his business, you certainly are not being very careful. You told Kaiya you were a fae? That does explains quite a lot, ne?” He moved closer to the vampire, feeling the cold, oppressive warning to stay back and yet ignoring it.

“First it was Kaiya, and now you have a little girl who follows you around like a puppy who thinks you can do no wrong. I suppose you have not told her about your taste for men as well. She is so wrapped up in you she probably would not hear it anyways.” Irei hadn’t been to terribly impressed by the young teenager with the fascination for Hayate. That Halloween night she had tried to lure him in an argument. A naive girl of 14 thinking she had a better understanding of the world than a 27 year old man. Ah, teenagers! Had he ever been that annoying? Yes, he decided. He had, but by the time he was her age he had already been living in a mental hospital for over a decade and had lost his virginity.

“You do remember Kaiya, right? The girl I warned you not to hurt. It’s a mighty odd coincidence that she is dead now, don’t you think?” Irei smirked at the glowering vampire. “I do not know if you have figured it out yet, but I am what is called a necromancer. I live half in reality and half with ghosts. I just wanted to personally invite you to a seance happening tomorrow evening. I plan to call back Kaiya’s wandering soul. You were pretty close to her. I assumed you might like to be there.” He put the cigarette back in his mouth and grinned.

"Do I look surprised?" Hayate idly asked the other man. "Well, I suppose that is the look one would have upon seeing trash roaming about the streets. Really, they should be more careful about cleaning around here." No, he was not happy in the slightest when it came to seeing Irei. The man was a parasite leeching onto anything and everything he could in the vampire's eyes. Of course, it was only fair that Irei viewed Hayate the same way. They had not had pleasant footing since the first day they met, and it appeared as if nothing was going to change that fact between them.

The wind picked up for a moment, its icy fingers grazing Hayate's cheek and causing the vampire to turn his head somewhat away from the chilly wisp of air. However, he kept his eyes upon the other man as a displeased frown twisted his lips and spoke of his disfavor of the necromancer.

His eyes narrowed at Irei. "I tell people a lot of things," he said quietly. It was his way of saying he did not care if Irei believed it to be true or not. "The question is . . . you truly don't know what I am, do you?"

A flare ignited inside of the vampire's chest as Irei mentioned Chris. It showed in his eyes as he took a step forward to the taller man. Height meant nothing in this situation. "My taste in men?" he asked, dangerously quiet. "As far as I'm concerned, the only one for a taste of men here is you." The conversation swayed quickly away from Chris, though, and Hayate felt the corner of his mouth twitch as Irei named Kaiya. He did not expect for Irei to say what he said next. It honestly surprised him and threw him off his guard. Irei planned to call back a dead spirit — a murdered one. It was most unnatural thing one could do on this earth, but it was more than just that. It was a threat against him, and Hayate could feel it as Irei spoke.

"Kaiya can rot in her grave for all I care," Hayate whispered, the threat from the vampire palpable in the air. "And you can, too."

"I am not sure how you look at anything. You always have the same dark look for someone with such light hair." Irei just smiled a little at Hayate’s insult and took the cigarette out of his mouth. “Trash am I? Pretty big talk coming from some one like you. Does that mean you like to sleep with trash? Then why not just go roll in a dumpster? It seems like that would be easier.”

Irei’s hair had been pulled back into a messy braid. Ever since he had grown out his hair, Sascha had been unable to stop touching it, and had taken to practicing braiding it. The result always seemed to be a bit of mess at the back of his head. Sascha obviously never had a calling to become a hair dresser.

Tendrils easily came loose of the messy braid, and as the wind picked up, it caught them and blew them across Irei’s face, obstructing his view of Hayate just slightly. “Why be so insulting Hayate-san?” He walked toward the water and kicked a pebble into the water, watching it’s pristine surface become disturbed and ripple out from the central point.

“Do you still not admit that you and I fucked in the bathroom of the wine bar? You really should watch what you consume Hayate. It makes you pretty loose.” Irei believed that Kaiya’s soul wasn’t resting in the first place. From the way she and Faye were murdered it had been a very traumatic event. Based on his background and experience that led him to believe that she was a prime subject for becoming a yuurei, a ghost of Japanese tradition that wanders the earth seeking revenge for it’s suffering. Irei had the ability to force her soul into peace, and he would.

“They burned her body so she is just ash now. There won’t be any rotting of flesh I am afraid. Sorry to disappoint you.”

Irei’s initial words actually coaxed the ghost of a smile to his lips, but it was only slightly made of amusement. Hayate’s eyes, though blue, seemed to hold that fiery bright quality that was common of them whenever he was incensed. He thought Irei’s attempt to throw another grave insult his way fell short of making an impact upon the vampire, so he ignored Irei the second time.

Quite surprisingly, Hayate found himself laughing at Irei’s claim that Hayate was trying to be insulting. If anything, his goal was to infuriate the dead-bringer enough to the point that he would leave Hayate alone. Words alone did not appear to have an impact on the man, though, and the mutt would not quit for some reason that Hayate could not read — unless he was right the first time he had guessed at it and the man was obsessed with him. If this was Irei’s attempt to win him over, it was going very poorly. The only thing Hayate wished to do more than anything else was crush the breath out of Irei’s very lungs until the man was dead on the dirt below. It was the only thing that would have made Hayate happy in this given situation.

“I find it quite funny the only person who remembers that encounter is you,” Hayate mused, stepping forward to approach the other man. “Unrequited affection, to the point of making up fanciful stories, does not become you.” There was a heavy tone of sarcasm laced with the intent of offending the other man. Even if the encounter had happened, Hayate found no reason to believe it or admit it. The vampire created his own little world he lived in, and unless Irei had hard proof he could use against Hayate, the other man was not going to even blink in regards to the accusation.

“Rot, burn — what’s the difference?” Hayate’s anger was in check, if only because Irei was steering clear of the soft points. These were children games.

Irei knew he was skating on thin ice so to speak, but he couldn't help it. There was something palpable about the dangerous atmosphere that surrounded Hayate. Sometimes he was amazed that other's could not feel it when standing so close. Perhaps it was because Irei perceived him as a threat, that he was able to feel it. It was the danger that led him to Hayate like a moth to the flame.

Ah, so he still denied it. Irei supposed that he would also deny the scar left on his skin was made him was his as well. Even though one would be able to tell from dental records rather easily that the spacing would match Hayate's teeth, he doubted Hayate would be interested in going through the process. So the burden of proof was up to him.

Unrequited affection? Perhaps that was what it was. Irei knew it wasn't a fanciful story or whatever. "Would it be too forward to ask, what would become me?" He smiled as he had a vague idea of what might be the little vampire's answer.

"Hm, well I suppose the buttons from my shirt might still be scattered around the bathroom, unless it's been cleaned since then. There were also plenty of people in the bar that night that would have seen you kissing me." He thought out loud matter-of-factually.

Irei wasn't really all that interested in making the vampire angry anymore. He just dodged everything anyway and it ended up with Irei wracking his brain for something new and insulting to say to him. "I'd say that there is rather a big difference between rotting and burning. Either way she's not resting and it is someone's fault."

Certainly, there were others who caught onto the danger surrounding Hayate, but they were few and far in between. Many came in contact with him and saw nothing but a harmless person by their side, enjoying their company. Others, though, they saw the deadened quality in his gaze, something that spoke of nothing behind the veil, and it was enough to scare them and incite them to run as far away from him as possible. The moment he developed a desire for something, it was impossible to shake him of it. He was would seek it until he could consume it and bathe himself in it like some bloody soldier after a battle. He was covered in the blood of his victims, and yet not an eye could see the traces he could not wash away beneath his skin.

Hayate was not going to answer him that question. He was waiting to see what the necromancer's game was regarding his belief. Hayate wanted to know if he would pursue these ends or pretend of them nothing after some time had let them pass away. Personally, he did nto want to deal with this anymore.

He walked slowly in winding steps to form a half circle around the other man. Hayate glanced up, a curious sparkle in his eyes. "Seen who?" he asked, and his hands were half in his pockets, thumbs hooked outside of them. Again, Irei thought he could win this easily. He couldn't.

The vampire stopped pacing. "And whose fault would that be?" he asked, his tone loud but quiet all at once.

Irei watched as the petite blond lion stalked around him. He may have mentally decided he didn't want to play games, but it certainly didn't seem like Hayate was tired of them just yet. Irei was used to playing games with people who rarely gave up any information willingly. Eventually he may get bored with it, but Hayate was still far to interesting a subject to drop.

"Did you not understand my sentence in English? I could speak in Japanese if you preferred, but I would think that you could understand either just as easily. Perhaps your ears do not work right anymore." Irei had no intention of repeating himself because he knew that Hayate had heard him perfectly fine.

The spirit that clung to Irei stirred and whispered into his host's brain. It warned him about the danger this other presented and spoke of the blood and death that hovered and lingered on the small blond man.

"I do not know who killed her, nor will assume it actually is anyone." Irei was actually being honest with Hayate. He didn't outright believe that the vampire had murdered the two fae. While Hayate was perfectly capable of doing the deed, Irei had yet to find any spirits seeking vengeance against him. Although Irei didn't doubt there were many others.

"I guess that means you do not wish to attend the seance then. Are you afraid of spirits Hayate?"

Hayate lapsed back into his mother tongue with ease, not even noticing the change in his own language. “I’m not asking you to repeat anything,” Hayate said, catching onto the vague sense of irritation in the other man’s voice. “I simply asked for an answer. See, I heard ‘you,’ but I have no idea who ‘you’ is.” Certainly, if looks could be deceiving, Hayate appeared to be truly lost in that moment, his face expressing a childlike confusion towards the other man. “Unless, of course, you do not want to mention names, which is understandable. Not everyone likes having their name thrown around in such a disrespectful manner. I’m sure you would know all about that,” Hayate said softly, alight blue eyes looking in Irei’s direction with a sort of secret in them. “Wouldn’t you?”

His speech fell back to English when he replied to Irei’s own English words. It seemed they could not settle upon a single language to speak continuously throughout this meeting. Hayate was fluid with both, however, and it did not impede him. “Oh, someone killed her all right,” Hayate said plainly, looking over at Irei. “I’m sure she didn’t hang herself, even though I know people do that. Hmm, didn’t they say she was strangled first? Bruises,” and here, Hayate traced his own neck with his fingers, “all around her neck in the shape of fingers, they say. But no one can tell the size for her neck was small and everything was crushed together to create misshapen bruising. Quite painful, it was, I’m sure.”

As for spirits, Hayate had no idea for them. Neither did he much believe in them. Hayate smiled at Irei’s assumption, or question, that he would be afraid of spirits. “No, I’m not,” he said. Then, he spoke in Japanese, a voice so quiet it could barely break over the wind. “Spirits leave me alone, for what reason I cannot say.” He sighed gently. “I suppose they are afraid of me.”

Irei raised an eyebrow at Hayate's words. He was not sure what the vampire was talking about exactly. Irei had not heard about any rumors about him aside from back he had fooled around with the then attached kitsune girl. What exactly was it that he seemed to know. He mentally shrugged. Might as well ask.

"Ah, well I'm not really sure what you are implying. Do you know something about me that I don't?"

Irei's English and Japanese transitions were not always the smoothest thing. In fact he wasn't quite sure why Hayate was going on about how Kaiya had been murdered. Hadn't it been fairly obvious she had been killed by someone? Maybe Irei hadn't stated things correctly. It would have been the first time he had confused someone with the way he talked in English.

"I do not think I made myself clear. I meant to say, I know someone murdered her, but I do not know who. I also do not presume to assume who it was." He repeated the statement in his head and figured it sounded much clearer this time.

Irei smiled a knowing smile and shook his head as he moved closer to the smaller person. "No, spirits are not afraid of you. Unless the spirit doesn't know it is dead, then what reason would it have to fear someone who's life has been...extended?" He reached out boldly and placed a hand on Hayate's shoulder without masking any bit of how condescending it was meant to be.

"I am afraid you know little about the spirit world Hayate-san. Just because they haven't made their presence known, does not mean they don't follow you. Spirits that don't rest, feed off of different forms of energy. Many are attached to spatial energy where something traumatic happened, while others can attach themselves to a host. That does not mean the host is always aware of it, unless they are especially sensitive." Irei himself hosted a spirit.

The nuances in Hayate’s speech were lost on the other man, and Hayate chalked it up to Irei having no shame. It was not such a big loss, after all, and he merely let it pass without further commentary. It also seemed as if somewhere long the way words were confused between the two of them, and Hayate could not tell who had gotten them wrong. He, too, allowed that to pass them by. “Good for you,” Hayate spoke in English, a slightly condescending tone to his voice. This was hardly an entertaining conversation for him to have at the moment.

Irei’s hand touched Hayate’s shoulder, and the smaller man showed no hesitance in his displeasure. He knocked the offending arm away, longing to do far more than just that. He would have broken the other man’s arm if he did not find the strength inside of him to hold back from such an action out in the open like this. It would hardly look good for him, especially considering he had already broken someone else’s arm once before.

“I know all I need to know about the spirit world,” Hayate said sharply. “And if any of them gave a damn about me, I think I’d know about it, so your little spook show is hardly going to work on me.” What did Hayate care about spirits who had never made any presence known to him, had never haunted him, nor ever bothered to make themselves known to him? As far as he was concerned, spirits were nonexistent given the lack of his encounters with them. Hayate could not remember seeing a single spirit in his entire life. “If that’s all you’ve got to say, I think I’ll be making my way elsewhere now. I have better things to do than to be taunted by children.”

"Good for you? How does that answer my question? How would I know about having my name thrown around in a disrespectful manner?" He gave Hayate a genuinely confused look and reached up to rub the back of his own neck.

Irei had expected as much from Hayate and looked down at his arm as it fell back to his side. He then raised his eyes back toward Hayate and just smiled and shrugged. He could practically feel the hate radiate off of the smaller man.

"You know," He slipped his hand under the collar of his shirt touching the space in between his neck and shoulder where Hayate had bitten him. It was just further back than his collar bone, a little more toward his back. The memory of that night almost seemed like a dream to him now, but he could still feel the electric shock that had been triggered from the bite. "I missed the way it felt when you bit me. It was really good."

At first Irei had been upset when he had finally understood who he had been with that night, but as time went by as it is want to do Irei found he was OK with it. In fact he was more than OK and actually longed for it to happen again. But the way things were going, he'd probably have to catch the vampire drunk off his ass again. Irei sighed inwardly.

Irei brought a hand up defensively. "That is fair I suppose. It is always a tough choice to make to talk to the dead. It's certainly hard if they are dead family members. But I guess as a vampire you've moved on from that a long time ago."

A smile graced Irei's lips. Had Hayate actually mentioned the subject of children considering who he was known to be hanging around with? "Ah, well I'm sure you do. Like fucking children? Tell me, have you even slept with her yet? She acts a little like you have, but I cannot tell for sure. She's about fourteen, ne? Funny, that was about the same time for me. Be careful, she might be tight enough to pinch your dick off."

Irei pulled out a cigarette and his lighter and placed the vehicle for his nicotine in between his lips before covering his lighter's flame from the wind so he would actually be able to get the damn thing lit.

It was one thing for the two of them to be confused about exactly what was being said between them. Hayate glared at the other man, not understanding why Irei could not let topics drop when it was clear things were no longer easy to follow. "If you don't know what's going on, then maybe it's best to learn how to close your mouth," he snapped, irritation finally getting to him and causing him to snap more so than he would have done just moments before.

The calm was disturbed when Irei said something Hayate was not expecting. What was he admitting to? The vampire was in heavy denial at the possibility that he may have slept with the other man in a bathroom at The Wine Bar, but his own assurance was shaken as Irei said, in so many words, that he wished to be bitten again because he missed how it felt. Having no positive memories of the young man and nothing but his hate to go on, Hayate's initial reaction was disgust; his stomach churned, revolting at the idea that he might have been with Irei that night. He tried his best to keep the turmoil off of his face, but he might not have been entirely successful. It was a heavy burden to take in without a warning in advance to prepare himself, and nothing was left to the imagination: Hayate was anything but happy.

He was silent still as Irei spoke further on spirits and dead family. The vampire had no reaction to it, wishing nothing more for this conversation to be over with already. Hayate was turning around, prepared to leave, when Irei decided to open his mouth and say something he should not have said. Hayate froze in place, hearing every disgraceful word out of his mouth. It seemed as if he would not have any reaction, but the calm surface lied about the interior of Hayate's mind.

Suddenly, he whirled around and slammed his fist into Irei's chest right into the heart. It was hard enough to cause Irei's heart to skip a beat or two, hard enough to leave a nasty bruise the next day — any harder and he could have broken some ribs. In fact, he may have accidentally split a few this time, though it was unclear just how far the damage went. Hayate grasped the other man by the shirt and roughly shoved him against a tree. He openly gritted his teeth, vampire fangs glistening despite the clouds overhead.

"Do you really want to tempt me?" Hayate hissed, the fury burning in his eyes. "Speak of her disrespectfully like that again, and something will come along to pinch your dick off, you worthless piece of shit." Hayate reeled back faster than anything that could be countered, his fist colliding with Irei's face this time. He shoved the other man away from him, his breathing harsh and labored. No one talked about Chris that way. No one.

He would be keeping his eyes on Irei to make sure the other man watched himself and his tongue from now on. Spitting excess saliva in his mouth onto the ground, Hayate turned around and left the area. He needed to get away from Irei before he did worse damage to the man — damage Irei would not be able to heal from.

Irei raised an eyebrow at Hayate's sudden out burst. He had been the one to mention it not Irei, so Irei was left to assume that perhaps the vampire hadn't really know what he was talking about to begin with. Irei shrugged slightly and acquiesced to let the subject drop. It did seem kind of pointless now anyways.

He watched Hayate intently as both of them continued to speak, or not speak as the case may have been. There was a change in the man since the time in which he had been actively seeking Kaiya, who of course had been alive at the time. Irei wondered at the inconsistency in Hayate’s behavior. It was actually kind of small thing, but when Kaiya had been around Hayate, Irei had some belief that Hayate was going to be very bad for the small fae. Not to say that Hayate’s strange relationship with a 14 year old girl was anything but bad, but there was something that wasn’t there anymore. Perhaps Irei just could no longer detect any malicious intent now. Perhaps he was just losing the ability to care. The latter was probably more correct.

Irei’s mouth got him in trouble more often than some of the other parts of his body. He had the uncanny knack to not know when to keep his mouth shut. And while he had been hit before on occasion for it, he had never expected such ferocity from the normally docile vampire. Irei heard a crack as the force of Hayate’s fist impacted against his chest and knocked him backward. His eyes widened as everything seemed to progress in slow motion, until he crashed into the back of a tree from Hayate’s second use of force on him. Irei’s head snapped backward and hit the rough bark of the tree, splitting his head and causing blood to matt into his hair and run down the back of his neck.

With all the ringing in his ears, Irei heard very little of what Hayate was saying. The image of the smaller man in front of him was blurring around the edges and caused Irei to blink a few times. Then Hayate came at him with a hook in the face, busting Irei’s lip and causing some of his teeth to rattle in his head. He was probably going to have a massive headache when he was completely conscious of the moment again.

Irei was then shoved away and landed on his side, like a broken toy that a child no longer wanted to play with. Irei rose up slowly from the ground and sighed as he leaned against the trunk of a tree, being careful to not make any contact with his head against it. He watched as Hayate huffed his way through the overgrowth and smiled a little to himself. Insult her? Irei didn’t know Chris well enough to insult her yet, but it had certainly gotten a rise out of the vampire finally. Irei looked down at himself and would have laughed out loud if it wouldn’t have hurt his head all the more at he saw. That apparently wasn’t the only thing to get a rise out of what had just occurred. He reached up and touched his bruising cheek, the flesh was tender. What was wrong with him? It couldn’t be normally that he was turned on by this.

Irei looked out over the shimmering water that still managed to catch light despite all the clouds in the sky and a memory played like an old movie in Irei’s head:

“Pain and hunger, Shinsuke. They clear the mind for the knowledge you will have to learn.”

Sato-sensei hadn’t allowed the boy he had taken into his care to eat for a couple of days. He had found the kid on the street wacked out on some sort of drug, and it wasn’t really that big of a change for Irei anyways. He was still shaking from the detox and from the lack of nourishment in his system. His health at the moment was certainly not a major issue. Sato meant business and had little time to teach the kid who should have been in training from an earlier age.

“Don’t call me Shinsuke...”

Back in the present, Irei closed his eyes and thought he might try to sleep for a little while.
