Who: Adrienne and Katy
When: Around 3 PM
Where: Southern Elysium
What: Horseback riding

Working at the stables had given Adrienne a chance to spend more time with Coral, her favorite Elven horse and the one with whom she had bonded with the most. The mare was loving and kind, but also swift and sturdy enough to take on long journeys through the valley. It wasn't until Adrienne had finished her work for the day did she take the horse out for a ride, guiding the mare through to the southern portion of Elysium and toward the entrance to the haven.

The mountains in the South were often covered in mist no matter the time of the year, and the stairs that led down from the cave were often shielded by the mist. But they were visible today, and Adrienne clearly recalled the first time she stepped through the darkness of the entrance to face the entire valley. It was beautiful, and the werewolf had an urge to climb up those steps again. It would be a long way up, but well worth it just to feel her muscles burning from the climb.

She remained on her horse, though, grey jacket huddled tight around her small frame to fend off the chill in the air. Coral neighed a little, shaking her mane as she began to move backward. "What's the matter, girl?" She asked while patting the horse's neck. The horse seemed uneasy for a reason unknown to the lycan. Adrienne looked around a bit, slightly startled when the sound of hoof beats appeared behind her.

Katy road wildly on horse back. The magnificent dun colored animal thundered through the trees and down the pathway. Katy’s dark hair blew past her face parallel with the horse’s dark mane and tail. She had been promising herself that she would explore this place more, and when she had found the stables way back when, it had felt like a little piece of home again.

There had been a pretty handsome young man working at the stables when she had appeared on the scene and started letting the dun beauty sniff her hand before she dared petting the animal’s nose. He had asked her if she wanted riding lessons. Katy had found that a little condescending and decided she would give him a lesson. She saddled the horse by herself, put the bridle on, and mounted in an easy graceful manner of a girl who had done this before. She winked at the kid before she rode off into the clear brisk day.

She was glad of her thick coat against the wind that whipped past her as she headed south urging the animal into a trot as soon as she was out of the residential area. After a little while she had shifted in the saddle and decided to test her abilities and clutched her legs around the horse’s middle and changed the cantor to a run.

It was almost like she was back on the ranch, running her horse through the paths she had known so well. Not too long down the path she noticed another horse, a dusty rose colored one, and rider. The other rider turned to see the commotion coming up behind her and Katy could tell that she was actually a very pretty young woman, probably around the age most people believed herself to be.

Katy pulled on the reins. The sudden command to stop perturbed the horse, and she reared. Katy held on tightly. She had on many previous experiences fallen off of a horse when this happened. She clenched her legs and leaned in close to the animal’s neck, holding on to both it and the reins before the animal calmed down enough and placed the airborne hooves back on the ground.

“Ah! That was a close one.” She turned and led her still disgruntled mare toward the other rider and smiled. “Hi there. Didn’t mean to startle you. I’m just a little over excited I guess. My name is Katy Wilson.” She came up abreast with Adrienne’s horse and offered her hand in greeting.

Adrienne was a skilled rider, she had to be seeing as that was the only form of transportation in the haven. In a way she enjoyed horseback riding more than riding in a car. It was a simpler way of living, and she enjoyed that. Adrienne suspected that something else had spooked her horse, and not the other horse and rider that had come upon them. Adrienne looked around a bit suspiciously, but then offered a smile to the other girl.

"Hey," she said. Adrienne steadied her horse, placing a calm hand upon the neck to stroke it gently. "Don't worry about it," Adrienne said with a wave of her hand dismissing the event. "It's not a big deal. Just wasn't expecting anyone else out here, that's all." She took a deep breath and looked down at the girl's hand, taking it to shake it. "Nice to meet you, Katy," Adrienne said with a firm shake. It was a good first impression to make according to her father. "I'm Adrienne... Conté," she said as an after thought less than a second later. She wasn't really used to saying her full name in introductions.

The girl looked around at their surroundings again, brushing off the odd feeling she had that something else had scared her horse. "So Katy," Adrienne said as she slipped her hand away from the girl. "Just out for a ride or are you going someplace in particular?"

Katy had become a decent rider at the ranch her father had bought. It had taken a while for her to go ahead and learn because she was being stubborn and unhappy about the move, but she had come to love the few horses they kept at the ranch and riding them had become a pleasure. The afternoon ride was already exhilarating, but persistent memories started to surface to make the experience bittersweet.

"Nice to meet you too Adrienne." The other girl had exceptional strength in the handshake. Katy was surprised because normally she would barely register other people's strength through a handshake, so she met her back with the equal amount.

Katy noticed Adrienne looking around them, and Katy turned slightly in the saddle to get a look as well. "Are you looking for something?"

"I was wanting to explore more of this place. Especially if I am to stay here. But I think I got a little caught up in the ride." She reached down and patted the horse's neck gently. The horse's eyes were wide, and she hadn't stopped moving despite Katy's firm hold on the reins. "Hm, that's odd."

Adrienne hadn't meant to put more strength into the handshake. Firm handshakes were a good first impression, but with her enhanced strength from being a werewolf, firm took on a whole new meaning. Sometimes she had to remind herself to hold back just a bit to avoid hurting the other person; it figures that she had forgotten to do so with Katy.

The uneasy feeling hadn't disappeared completely, and when Katy asked if she was looking for something, Adrienne simply nodded. "Just for whatever is spookin' Coral here," she said as she held on firmly to the reins. The lycan looked over at Katy's horse, noting immediately that it also looked as if something had spooked it. It was on alert, and it looked like it would be ready to bolt at any given moment.

"So it's not just me," she said as the hairs along her neck stood on edge. Adrienne took in a quick whiff of air, seeing if she could catch any particular scent on it. She couldn't smell anything in particular, though she knew that something was there. "Lynxes maybe? Or wolves?" She looked around them again. Adrienne was beginning to wonder if she just attracted bad situations - each time she was with Sanura something strange happened to them, and now the trend was continuing with Katy.

"Whatever it is, the horses don't like it," she said finally. "But it's probably because they're not familiar with it." At least that's what Adrienne hoped. After the harpy attack on the town the other day, the girl wasn't sure if she wanted to have another dangerous encounter with an unknown creature.

Katy found that she often put more strength into things now. It took a bit of concentration and awareness sometimes to keep from crushing other people's hands. With men it wasn't too bad, but she had almost broken another girl's hand before. It brought a whole new meaning to the term 'sometimes I don't know my own strength.'

She watched as Adrienne sniffed the air. Regular humans didn't do that. She had felt something about Adrienne since she had gotten close enough. She smelled familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. "You're not exactly human, are you Adrienne?"

Her horse's made an agitated sound like a whinny and tossed it's head. "What's wrong Eohild?" Katy whispered in the horse's ear. Whatever was bothering the horse was staying down wind of her nose. Had she been in were form she probably would have been able to notice it. "I'm not really familiar with the wild life around here I'm afraid."

She slipped from the saddle effortlessly and looked into the underbrush. Her eyes pierced through the empty spaces between the twigs and leaves that would block normal human eyesight. She stopped when she was able to pick out what kind of animal was spooking the horses.

"It's a boar!"

She had barely finished the sentence when the animal squealed and the crashing and breaking of twigs could be heard as the animal ran toward them. She held on to the reins of her spooked horse and tried to get the animal calm enough so that she could get back in the saddle to hopefully out run the animal.

Adrienne glanced over at Katy, an amused chuckle passed over her lips at the other girl's words. Not exactly human. The words echoed in her mind as she shook her head. "No, not exactly," she said with a smile. There was a time when Adrienne would have been offended by such words, or when they would have upset her enough to the point of crying. The werewolf wasn't like that anymore (thankfully), and she was currently confident and secure in her life as a praeternatural. "I'm a werewolf," she said, but she tilted her head to the side and smiled a bit more. "But you sorta already knew that, didn't you?"

Adrienne watched as Katy dismounted her horse, approaching the underbrush carefully to investigate. The younger girl followed, her footsteps falling a few feet behind Katy's. She paused when Katy exclaimed it was a boar, and no sooner had the words left her mouth did the animal appear. Coral reared on her hind legs, neighing loudly in distress as the boar raced toward them. Adrienne was close enough to the horse that she could quickly grab onto the reins and hoist herself back on the saddle.

Katy was still trying to calm her horse, and Adrienne maneuvered Coral so that they would intercept the boar. Sable seemed more confident with Adrienne mounted on her back, and the Elven mare used her mighty hooves to stomp at the ground in front of the boar and around it. The wild porcine paused and backed up a bit only to scratch its feet against the path - an action that usually came before a charge.

"Hurry!" Adrienne yelled over to Katy. "Let's get out of here!" Coral reared on her hind legs again, and Adrienne turned the horse in the other direction. They could outrun the boar easily; Elven steeds were some of the fastest land animals in existence.

"I had a feeling you probably were." Aside from her brother and the old were up in the mountins back home, Katy had never met another werewolf. Let alone another girl werewolf at that. "I am too. I've been one for about 8 years or so now. God, has it been that long?" She tilted her head back and looked thoughtful as she let her mind wonder about where all the years gone?

Pulled from her thoughts as the animal burst its way through the underbrush she found she had to jump quickly backward. The boar squealed as it made another attempt at goring her. Katy slipped her foot in to the stirrup and quickly swung herself up into the saddle as the horse, Eohild, was already swiftly sidestepping the more obtuse animal.

"You don't have to tell me twice." She dug her heels into Eohild's side and chased after Adrienne. The animal chased after them futilely for a little while before hanging back and returning to where they had been. Katy didn't slow Eohild until they were well out of sight from the enraged animal. She and her horse were a bit winded from the short chase.

"What in the world? I wonder if we were near piglets or something." She looked over at Adrienne and smiled a little. "If it was that I can understand being a little angry about us hanging around."

Adrienne had only met one or two older werewolves in her life, older in terms of years at least. It was a sure fire way to gain the girl's interest though since she was always looking for guidance when it came to lycanthropy. In a month's time Adrienne would have been a werewolf for only a year, a mere fraction of what Katy had experienced as a lycanthrope. "Wow, eight years, huh?" Adrienne couldn't help but smile. "It hasn't even been a year for me." There were so many questions going through Adrienne's head now, but they were all put on the back burner with the appearance of the boar.

They raced down the path away from the oncoming animal. It was definitely angry about something as evidenced by its relentless pursual of the two girls. They easily outran the smaller animal, though, and eventually came to a halt when the boar gave up and trotted away. Adrienne looked over her shoulder and slowed Coral with a gentle tug on the reins. She steered the horse around in a circle to watch the boar disappearing into the bushes that she and Katy found it in.

Adrienne caught her breath quickly. "I have no idea," she said with a small shrug. "Maybe? But I didn't see any around, or smell any." She sighed a little and leaned forward to rest against her horse's neck. "Maybe it was just scared of us, being werewolves and all." Adrienne patted Coral's neck and then pushed herself back to a sitting position. "That was exciting though." She laughed a little and then guided her horse a little closer to Katy. How did she always end up meeting people under such exciting circumstances? Maybe it was her fate, but the girl wasn't complaining.

"Wanna head back to town?" She cocked her head in the direction of Helicharis, and smiled at Katy. "We can grab some food or something?"

"Yup. Eight whole years. I don't think I would want to go back to the first year for anything. That was definitely the scariest and the hardest time to come to terms with it." It had been hard, but she had also had the company of her brother then, and the help of their old teacher.

"I didn't see or smell anything either. I think they may have been down wind of us. It probably wouldn't have even chased after us if I hadn't investigated. Sometimes I'm a bit to curious for my own good." Katy let Eohild reach up and bend a low tree branch down to munch on some of the greenery. She grinned at Adrienne. "Yeah, it was pretty exciting. It makes me want to write about it.

Katy pulled on Eohild's reins and nodded her head at Adrienne's suggestion. "It's probably best. I think I've run my horse a little too hard, but I think she enjoyed it too. Anything to get out of the stables for a little while. I'm getting pretty hungry anyways."

Katy was not shy about eating. She was a very thin girl, but she managed to pack it all away somehow. She figured it probably had to something to do with being a werewolf. Perhaps she had a hyper metabolism or something. She turned Eohild's neck so that the animal would turn around so they could head back into the town and started a slow trot beside Adrienne.

"So what's your favorite kind of food? I really haven't tried all they offer here and I've only been to the restaurant a few times. I mostly just make my own stuff at home, but that gets boring sometimes."

Adrienne was glad that she was almost done with her first year of being a werewolf. She used to think that she wouldn't have even made it this long, but it really had gone by in the wink of an eye. Unlike Katy, Adrienne had chosen to hide her lycanthropy from her family. It was a mistake, one that she could never forgive herself for making and one she couldn't take back. She had put her family through so much because they believed her to be dead, and though they were finally reunited they only had a few months together before the Pandora Virus struck.

It was nice meeting another female werewolf. She hadn't had one as a friend for a long time, and she definitely missed that sort of companionship. Though they had just met, Adrienne felt that Katy could empathize with her much easier than most other people she had become friends with because Katy probably felt and thought the same things Adrienne was currently going through. Adrienne wouldn't talk about them immediately, but she would in time.

"I love Italian food," Adrienne said as they made their way back to town. "My father's Italian," she explained. "He's a great cook, but now he just sits back and lets me do all the cooking." She let out a small laugh, and Coral neighed in response as if she understood what her rider had said. "The restaurant has good food, though. I think they make every kind of dish you can think of. The café is good, too, but that's mostly for just coffee breaks and light lunches." Which sounded really good to Adrienne. Hot coffee, along with a soup and salad sounded like the perfect lunch, but she would go wherever Katy wanted. Adrienne wasn't a picky girl, at least not always.

Katy preferred not to think of her first year. It had been heartbreaking to watch her father not know what to do. She knew that he had been afraid he was going to lose his children like when he had his wife some fourteen odd years back. Katy had wanted to be strong for him, but Katy’s brother had been another story. He had fought against the idea of being a monster, and it took him a much longer time to transition from human to werewolf.

Adrienne was actually the first female were she had met. It was interesting and Katy relished in the thought of getting to pick Adrienne’s brain about some of the issues she had faced and if their experiences had been similar.

“Mm, yes Italian is very good. I like Mexican food probably the best myself. Hotter the better!” Katy would routinely burn her tongue on the spices she like best and she didn’t know what she was going to do when she ran out of Tabasco sauce. She still had a number of bottles in her cottage that she liked to cook with. Maybe she could learn to make her own before she completely ran out.

“You’re father’s Italian? My mother was from Argentina. Have you ever had an Argentinian barbeque with chimi-churri sauce? It’s not spicy, but it is so good.” Katy wondered if the restaurant would have something so specialized as the parsley and garlic sauce from her mother’s country of origin. “I haven’t been to the café. Sounds good to me. I don’t normally drink coffee with lunch, but I’m sure they have tea or something.” She smiled at the other girl.

“Did you ever get the chance to go to Italy?” Katy had herself gotten the chance to visit her mother’s country of origin, not to mention she had a chance to visit Italy as well. The experience had been a spectacular one for her. She had lost her mother at such a young age, but going to the place where her mother had been born made her feel closer to her mother.

Katy urged Eohild to pick up her pace as they neared the town again. She could feel her stomach churn to tell her that it was empty. Food sounded like a very good idea.

Zach had played a major role in helping Adrienne make the transition from human to werewolf. She had denied it for the longest time, wanting nothing except to be normal. It wasn't until she met Zach was she able to accept her new life, and for that she would be forever grateful.

Their conversation about food only served to make Adrienne hungrier than usual. Her stomach growled, probably loud enough for her new friend to hear, and she blushed at the sound. "Like my stomach says," she began to joke. "That sounds really good." It was Adrienne's response to Katy's mention of Argentinian barbecue. The younger werewolf had never had it before, but it sounded delicious. She'd have to look up the recipe at the library sometime.

"I've been to Italy once," Adrienne answered as they neared the town. "I traveled through Europe after graduation, and visited every place of historical significance that I could." It was a testament to Adrienne's love of history, and all things ancient. "I spent a little more time in Sicily, though. That's where my dad's family is from, and I visited some relatives while I was there. Have you ever been?"

The two girls entered the town, and as soon as they had returned the horses to the stables they made their way toward the café. Adrienne no longer wanted a light lunch - she wanted a full course meal that would fill her grumbling stomach. She wasn't shy about eating, and had no qualms about stuffing her face in front of another person. Hopefully, it wouldn't make a bad impression upon Katy.

Adrienne's stomach growled a little bit more when the wind carried with it the smell of food. She whimpered a little, and then laughed at herself. "You know, I probably should have eaten breakfast this morning," she said with another laugh.

Katy never had the kind of support from a lover like Adrienne. She had had a boy friend in college, but that had proved to be an experience she didn't want to repeat. She had never had time for him what with the demands of school, the physical activities she was in, and the constant need to learn to control the wolf inside of her. The relationship had been the price she had to pay for everything else that was so important for her personally. It still didn't give him the right to have slept around behind her back.

Katy could easily hear Adrienne's stomach and it seemed her own wanted to respond as it too growled audibly. "It really is. I could make it some time and invite you over for some if you'd like."

Italy had been spectacular. It had been warm when she had been there, and flowers were in bloom. She had loved Tuscany. While in Florence she had been sitting near the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore taking pictures and soaking in the local atmosphere, she had met a handsome stranger, an Italian man. She spoke very little Italian; she mostly knew how to ask how much something was and where the bathroom was. He had sat down next to her and they tried to communicate. It must have been a fairly funny sight. Somehow she ended up eating dinner with him, and spending the night with him as well.

She blushed a little at the memory. "Yes. I've been to Italy. It was an absolutely beautiful country. Every one is so friendly there. You're father's Italian, huh? You know what they say about Italian men." Katy grinned at her.

Katy was a little stiff in walking. It had been quite a while since the last time she was on a horse for that long, and her body needed to adjust. She hoped that she wasn't walking bowlegged.

"How do you manage not eating breakfast? My metabolism is so high that I think I would be practically starving if I didn't eat." She looked up at the cafe and wondered what kind of sandwich she would want. Katy was just as bad about eating in front of people. She had not been brought up the lady that her mother would have probably preferred her to be.

"What are you going to get to eat?" She always asked that of other people, as if it would help her own indecision to know what others were going to eat first.

All the talk about Italy was making Adrienne home sick. She remembered her family in Sicily, and the wonderful time she had with them. Her entire European trip had been full of fantastic memories, and there was a part of her that wished she could travel around the area once more. Elysium was so close to all of the places she loved that sometimes she wished they were allowed to leave the protective walls of their haven.

She laughed along with Katy's joke about Italian men, but she really didn't want to think about her dad in that way since it was kinda gross. Overall, though, she had to agree - Italian men were definitely good looking, and great kissers. While she hadn't spent the night with anyone while on her trip, she did kiss some of them. These days the werewolf found that her tastes in men had been diminished down to one man in particular, and ever since she had fallen in love with him no other man would ever caught her attention.

They sat down at a cozy booth in the café, settling while they looked over the menus. Adrienne didn't know how she managed to go without a proper breakfast since she was practically starving at the moment. She normally took the time to eat, but this morning all she had was a piece of toast before she dashed out of the house. A mistake she would never make again.

"I think I'm going to have a two tuna sandwiches, a big bowl of soup, and some hot tea." Adrienne smiled a bit sheepishly at Katy, and folded her menu close. "Sometimes I think I should've been a Were-pig rather than a werewolf considering how much food I eat." She laughed at herself, and then beckoned the waiter so they could place their order.

Katy sat across from Adrienne and looked at the menu. She ran her finger over the listed items that were being served for lunch. "Hmm, fish and soup, huh? That sounds pretty good." She about snorted with laughter at the idea of Adrienne being a were-pig. "You know, I'd like to see that. Kind of like that boar that chased us."

She looked up at the waiter and grinned at the cute guy serving them. Seeing as working often times was considered an optional thing in this place, it was always interesting to Katy to see what people's jobs were. She had contemplated working at the bakery or maybe the candy shop. She wondered if they could handle her sampling most of the products.

"I think I'll have a grilled cheese on wheat bread, a bowl of Italian wedding soup, a side of chips, and some lemonade, pink if you have it." She smiled winningly at the server. After Adrienne placed her order with the boy, Katy made sure to get a good look at him from behind. She grinned again. She had a little bit of a habit checking men out when they weren't looking, especially if they had a nice ass.

"He's pretty cute. What do you think?" She picked up a piece of bread from the basket set in the middle of the table and spread a little butter on it while she waited for the food to be brought to them. "I haven't really met too many people here. Do you know any cute guys?"

There were times when Adrienne wondered if there were other types of were-creatures out there, but it seemed unlikely since the only legends in the world were of people changing into half-man, half-wolf beasts. There were no were-pigs, or were-cats, or were-birds. Were-birds. The idea amused her since she couldn't imagine how in the world a were-bird would even be created, or what it would look like. Maybe something like Big Bird, with sharp teeth.

Adrienne caught Katy staring at the waiter, and she couldn't help but smirk a little. While the younger wolf could admit that the guy was cute, he wasn't Adrienne's type. Not that any man was Adrienne's type unless they were Zach. "Yeah, he's cute," she said as she sipped her water. "But he's not my type," she added. A smile formed across her lips, and her eyes twinkled with happiness. "I have a boyfriend," she said with a dreamy sigh. She broke out of her reverie to answer Katy's question.

"I know a few cute guys. Why? You lookin' for a date?"

Katy continued to chuckle at the idea. Were-pigs indeed. It was just a fancy really and she didn't really go into thinking too deeply on the subject. The image just struck her as funny. She leaned back in her chair and smiled at Adrienne.

Not her type, huh? Katy herself didn't really have a type. The guys she had dated back in high school and college were all pretty different from each other. Her longest relationship was in college and after that messy break up she had kind of taken a break from guys in general. But since graduation and her travels, she had decided why not have a little fun and wanted to maybe let someone back into her life.

"Oh, you've got a boyfriend, huh? What type is he? I bet he's cute, right?" She grinned a little. "You could say I'm looking as it were. Just trying to have a good time I guess. It's nice to have options."

Adrienne didn't have a type either, but ever since Zach no one else caught her attention. She had dated different guys in college, and her only serious relationship ended so badly that, like Katy, Adrienne had sworn herself off men for a little while. But that was ages ago, and before Zach. Everything changed with the alchemist, and she was never happier with anyone than with him.

"Yeah, I have a boyfriend," she said with a grin. "And yeah, he's cute. Really cute." She couldn't help the blush that crept upon her cheeks. "He's an alchemist. We've been together for nine months now." She pushed her hair behind one ear, and then glanced upward at her new friend. Then, from the corner of her eye, she noticed their waiter coming back with their order. Service at the café was excellent, and they were always quick with their orders.

Adrienne smiled at the waiter, and then smirked a bit at Katy. "Looks good, doesn't it?" Whether or not Adrienne was referring to the food, or the waiter, was up for interpretation.
