Tuesday: November 6, 2007
Who: Mitsuko, Logan and the Kitano Family
When: Evening
Where: The Kitano Cottage
What: Dinnertime with the Kitanos and the Kitsune Kids... And the extraction of information on our friendly neighborhood psychopath

Mitsuko and Logan had arrived at the Kitano house at the dinner time, Mitsuko carrying with her a pie from the cafe. She hadn't been invited to a lot of family dinners, but it seemed like the polite thing to do. Logan was looking slightly better than he had in days, but he was still silent in light of being around the entire Kitano family, rather than just Zach.

After introductions, the two families were now sitting together at the dinner table. Mitsuko smiled at Kelsey and Lucinda. "Thank you for inviting Logan and I to dinner, Mista Kitano--" she remembered his dislike of Japanese honourifics. "--Mrs Kitano. I hope we didn't put you out."

Logan gave a brief nod of thanks, but couldn't manage to echo the sentiments. Mitsuko caught her brother's discomfort and decided to continue the conversation herself. "It looks very good. I'm not a very good cook myself. But I'm trying to learn, now that I'm not just torturing myself with bad cooking." She gave Logan a small, reassuring smile before turning back to Kelsey and Lucinda. "And you have a lovely home." Yeah, she was kissing ass. At least she was able to do it without sounding too smarmy.

"Not at all!" Lucinda said happily to Mitsuko. She was always glad to have guests over to their home, and she was sure they were most definitely welcomed by all if her husband invited them over. Zach seemed a little surprised but nonetheless cheerful at their arrival tonight, and Alicia looked as if she might bounce with joy as well. "And thank you so much for the wonderful pie," Lucinda continued. "Here I was thinking I'd have to get these kids to help me make some dessert." She smiled playfully at Zach and Alicia.

"Oh, you should come over and I'll help you with that," she said. "Kelsey can't cook anything, and he's lucky I enjoy cooking or he'd starve to death." Lucinda nodded her head next, eying her husband with an amused glint in her eyes. "He makes up for his lack of cooking by helping around the house."

Kelsey shook his head at his wife. Outside of his house, he tended to look like the parent in charge. Once people saw their home life, they realized very quickly who wore the real pants around the house and it wasn't Kelsey. "Thank you, Mitsuko," Kelsey answered humbly in response to their home. "We found out early on about what was happening, and we had plenty of time to pack everything of importance. This home contains almost everything from our home in California. We were lucky to salvage so much."

Mitsuko smiled broadly at Lucinda. The Kitanos were a very nice family. She couldn't believe that such a family could share blood with an evil bastard like Hayate. Part of her felt a little guilty for using them for information. But then... Maybe she wasn't actually using them. She had accepted the invitation not in an effort to find out more, but because Kelsey had been kind and Zach and Logan were such good friends. It seemed best to get to know each other better. "It's not problem," Mitsuko said, nodding. "I work at the cafe in Helicharis. Since there's no money in Elysium, I get paid in baked goods." She let out a small laugh "I know it doesn't make much sense, since the baked goods don't cost anything at the cafe as it is, but..." She gave a small shrug.

She nodded at Lucinda's offer of help. "That would be great. Faye was going to..." She trailed off, looking briefly over at Logan. She realized she had just stepped in it, mentioned Faye, which made him think of Kaiya. Mitsuko looked down. "But, um, I guess not anymore." She reached over and gave Logan's hand a quick squeeze in comfort and silent apology for the reminder of Kaiya. "I would really appreciate it, Mrs Kitano. Thank you."

Mitsuko nodded. She was also told early on of the virus. "You were very lucky. My mother brought me to Elysium early as well. I was able to bring most of my things, but I've been... Abroad for the past seven years. Never stayed much in one place, so I didn't have much. But what I brought is quite precious to me."

Trying hard to ignore Mitsuko's near mention of the recent deaths, Logan cast Zach a look, a tiny smile on his face. Both Zach and Logan knew most of Mitsuko's 'precious possessions' were stolen. Despite his dark mood, Logan couldn't help but be amused at the front his sister was putting up to the Kitanos. She was not lying... But it was definitely different from how she acted around people her own age.

“The system here is a very good one,” Kelsey said with a nod. “I’ve always been a staunch supporter of capitalist economies. However, after living here for some time, I’ve noticed that in the right hands this sort of economy can be good when tempered with a fair leadership, regardless of its roots being democratic or oligarchic in nature. It’s beneficial to the people within the society when everyone works together and the rulers do not act as tyrants. There’s hardly any theft or violent crime at all, which is an amazing feat so far.” At this point, Kelsey was rambling. He had a lot to praise with how the haven had been run for the past few months.

Lucinda, however, caught the name of the fae that was murdered recently. “Oh,” she said, placing a hand to her chest. “I’m so sorry,” she said with a gentle voice. “I didn’t know you were friends with her.” The atmosphere suddenly dropped from cheerful to dreary, and even Zach was chewing on his bottom lip as he looked down at the table. Alicia was silent, and Kelsey looked somewhat like a stone statue without movement to his frame. “It’s horrible what happened to them. They will catch who did it, I’m sure.” After that, though, it was clear everyone wanted to talk of something else.

Zach caught Logan’s look, and it was hard not to crack into a smile. Zach knew as well as Logan that Mitsuko was a thief and pretty good at it, so he thought it was all amusing to hear. He didn’t mind much that she was acting very polite in front of his parents. Zach hoped Mitsuko would act that way when adults were around, if only because he didn’t want to hear from his dad again about the ‘bad’ company he kept.

The conversation took another turn, though, when Kelsey brought up another name. “So,” he announced suddenly, raising his voice to catch everyone’s attention. “Mitsuko has also met Hayate.” The next part was directed at Mitsuko, though. “He wasn’t able to come tonight, though. He said he had some business to tend to. It’s a shame he couldn’t come.”

Mitsuko nodded at Kelsey's words. "I believe it's a very good system at the moment... However I believe there is some inherent danger in Elysium remaining a gift economy as the population grows. We receive the essentials of life, but are only asked-- not required-- to contribute anything to further the society. In that situation, it is dangerously likely a small percent of the population will be working much harder than they need to support the majority of the people. Jobs that are not considered intrinsically necessary for life could fall to the wayside as pressure is put on to produce food for the growing community. We'll have a hundred farmers to every one teacher. And lack of education will mean, in the future, jobs such as doctors or lawyers will become outright extinct or filled by people who are not completely qualified. Eventually, Elysium will have to move to a barter system in order to stimulate the productivity of its citizens."

As Mitsuko finished, she saw Logan looking at her in absolute shock. He could not believe his sister was capable of such as speech. It was not an act, or something Mitsuko was putting on to try to impressed. Her education had been specifically geared towards leading a clan. She also couldn't say she much cared living in a place that gave things away. Her thieving nature found it troublesome when things weren't given true value. But she honestly and truly blushed, realizing she had gone on a diatribe. "My... Mother is a politician. My education was kind of... Geared toward following the same path..." she explained feebly. "Sorry."

She could have kicked herself for bringing up Faye as it brought the whole mood of the dinner down. "I only met her the once," Mitsuko admitted. "But she was quite kind. Very friendly." Mitsuko went quiet now. The rather awkward silence filled the air.

At the mention of Hayate, Mitsuko felt her heart jump in her chest, though her expression conveyed none of her dread. Kelsey had invited Hayate to dinner. That was a bullet dodged. Maybe she had to rethink her plan of extracting information by feigning a crush. "That's too bad," Mitsuko said, frowning slightly. "I really was hoping to get to know him better. He was very charming when I met him. I would really like to see him again."

He had been silent all night, but the mention of the vampire finally tore a single word from Logan's mouth. "Hayate?" He asked his sister, shock in his voice. He looked at her, wide-eyed, as if she had lost her mind.

"Logan," Mitsuko said quietly. "We're guests." She gave the Kitanos an apologetic look. "He's a little protective of me. I supposed that's what brothers are for, ne?" She cast Logan a look. "But I'm able to take care of myself." She hoped her caught the true meaning of her words.

Logan looked to Zach, a completely puzzled expression on his face, rather than anger. He had absolutely no clue what Mitsuko was trying to do. Zach knew of his reservations about Hayate and he honestly had no idea what to do with Mitsuko seemingly showing interest in the man.

"I suppose I'll have to wait for him to come into the cafe," Mitsuko said with a smile.

Mitsuko did give a good speech, but Kelsey shook his head in response. "Most people do work, however, as most of the leisure activities of before are no longer available. As it currently stands, there isn't an imbalance in the workforce and there won't be as long as we do not attempt to bring back technology full-force and keep leisurely activities to a minimum. I believe humans became lazy the moment machines were created to do their work for them. Most people find enjoyment in work as it gives them something of meaning to do with their lives, or they will at least learn to create all of their own necessities. Nobody has to fix or create anything for another person in order to make a living for themselves; therefore, they can pick and choose who they wish to help. Simply it boils down to if you don't contribute to society, society will not contribute to you. Who wants to help a lazy scoundrel on the road?" Kelsey shook his head, lifting his fork and using it to gesture mildly above his plate. "Very few people raise a hand to help someone who will not help himself."

Of course, Kelsey was impressed with Mitsuko's educational background. Zach and Alicia were both surprised to hear her talking like that, and Lucinda thought it was wonderful. The atmosphere didn't change for most of them with the mention of Hayate's name. However, Zach noticed the way Logan said his name and frowned, wondering what that meant. He wasn't sure what exactly was going on, but it wasn't like he could ask questions now.

Kelsey shook his head, a slight chuckle coming out of his mouth. "There is no need to apologize," he said. "I completely understand how young men are with their sisters. Zach is the same way with Alicia."

Zach shrugged when Logan looked at him, though, and now he wondered why Logan was so shocked over his sister's reaction. It beat him, obviously.

However, all of the talk of Hayate had made another person at the table uncomfortable. Alicia was biting the inside of her cheek and shifting around in her seat, staring down at her plate. Not just a few seconds ago, she was smiling and enjoying the dinner. She seemed as if she didn't want to be there now.

"May I go to the bathroom?" Alicia asked suddenly, looking over at her mom.

Lucinda looked worried and nodded her head. "Of course you can, honey," she said. It startled her to hear her daughter ask so politely since it wasn't like Alicia to do that. She never asked permission to leave the table before, and their family wasn't as strict as that. Alicia quickly got up from her chair and vanished up the stairs, though. Lucinda turned to the rest of them and smiled, deciding not to explain it was unlike of her daughter to do that.

Mitsuko nodded in response to Kelsey. "Your view of society is much less cynical than mine," she smiled at him. "I can't say I entirely agree, but I hope you are right." She could have responded back to Kelsey, but it was not the time or place to continue the conversation. With the realization she was acting like her mother, she wanted to suppress those thoughts as much as possible.

When the topic of Hayate came up, Mitsuko focused her attention on the Kitanos, trying to gauge how each of them felt about the vampire. None of them seemed to have any sort of negative reaction to the mention... Except for the girl. Alicia. She was shifting around and just looking very uncomfortable. Maybe the others hadn't picked up on the change of Alicia's mood at Hayate's name, but Mitsuko was focused on such things and she'd made her living judging the moods of others.

The two families continued eating for a few minutes. Deciding enough time had passed without the teenaged girl returning, Mitsuko pulled away from the table to stand. "If you excuse me, I need to see if Alicia is done with the facilities..."

Not waiting to be properly excuse, she rose and went up the stairs. Once upstairs, she saw the bathroom was unoccupied. "Alicia?" Mitsuko called out. "Daijoubu?" Realizing the girl probably didn't speak Japanese, if Zach and Mister Kitano was any indication, she repeated herself in English. "Are you all right?"

"Go away," Alicia called from her bedroom behind the closed door once she heard somebody calling her name. "I don't feel well, and I just want to lie down for a while." Her voice was muffled, but it was clear she wasn't happy. Alicia wasn't going to get into trouble for talking that way to either of her parents, though they definitely wouldn't like it. It wasn't like them to punish one of their children just because their daughter or son asked to be left alone for some time. Either way, it didn't matter who it was. Alicia didn't want to talk.

Not too many months ago, she talked about making a treehouse with a young thirteen-year-old girl. Lately, treehouses were one of the last things on her mind. Alicia found herself less interested in childhood pastimes and more focused on the same troubles as the adults around her. With the recent edition of Hayate into their life, Alicia felt a strain on her relationship with her parents and brother. They all trusted him, but she didn't trust him at all. She couldn't tell them why either. Alicia wasn't sure if they were believe her or if they would even take it seriously.

For all she knew, they would have thought she was imagining things.

Alicia preferred to avoid all things Hayate, so she left the table to hide in her room. Of course, there wasn't a lock on her door, but that wasn't going to stop her from pretending that maybe there was one in case it wasn't her mom, dad, or Zach.

Mitsuko was rarely stopped by closed doors, even if they were locked. She just needed to know which room Alicia was in. She opened the door to the girl's bedroom and slipped inside. "I just noticed you only seemed to need to lie down when conversation turned to a new topic. Even hearing about two murdered girls didn't bother you as much as hearing about Hayate."

Sitting down on the edge of Alicia's bed, Mitsuko sighed deeply. She wasn't quite ready to reveal her own dislike of Hayate, but that didn't mean she couldn't try to get something out of this girl. "Sometimes parents and brothers don't notice this stuff...."

She brushed her long hair back over her ear. "I just kinda got the impression you're maybe not as thrilled with him."

She bit her lower lip, a dark thought coming into her head. "Has he done something to you?" She was not just asking to find out more about the psychotic vampire. She was truly worried something had happened to Alicia she had not been able to reveal to her parents or Zach.

Alicia was aggravated when the door to her room opened up and someone came in unwelcomed, but the only way she could express it was sitting upright on her bed and crossing her arms over her chest as she frowned at Mitsuko. She didn't feel comfortable talking about anything with a stranger, and so far Mitsuko was just a stranger to Alicia. "Does it matter what I leave the table over? Maybe I just wasn't hungry anymore." She felt a spark of fear at Mitsuko noticing her reaction to Hayate. That was definitely something Alicia didn't want to talk about to someone she didn't know.

It was her own fault her parents and brother didn't notice it. Alicia was trying her best to hide it from them ever since Hayate showed up in their lives as a new family member. He was polite around her and nice, acting like what happened in the library never happened, but every time she saw him, he made her uncomfortable. Alicia hated it, and she hated him. "So?" she asked smartly, not wanting to care what sort of impression Mitsuko got or why she was even interested in it. She was acting like any normal teenager would act in such a situation. Alicia was only slightly younger than Logan.

"It doesn't matter," Alicia said quietly.

Mitsuko didn't care if she was invited into Alicia's room and she didn't care if the girl pulled a snotty teenaged attitude on her. Mitsuko knew quite a bit about that attitude and knew how it could be used to hide unpleasant feelings and thoughts. If it was really Hayate that bothered Alicia... Oh, Mitsuko could only imagine. This was not what she thought would happen tonight. Part of her felt guilty for using this nice family for her vendetta. But she was also glad she was able to find out something was wrong with Alicia, regardless of her own feelings about Hayate. Alicia should not have been made to keep her discomfort a secret.

"I really don't think you were full," Mitsuko said quietly. "I think the conversation made you lose your appetite." She bit her lower lip. She knew it would take coaxing to get Alicia to open up to her. She didn't want to fully reveal her deception. That would make Alicia trust her even less, maybe even make her tell her parents what Mitsuko had done. But she could be honest to a point. "I've been trying to find out about Hayate. And someone told me he might have hurt someone. A girl." She was referring both to herself and Kaiya. "Maybe more than one. And if he's done something to you too... You can't keep that a secret. It most definitely does matter."

Mitsuko took a deep breath, placing a hand on Alicia's shoulder comfortingly. "If he's done something or made you uncomfortable, you have to tell someone about it. Because otherwise, how is he going to be stopped? Maybe your family wouldn't be so hot on him if they knew how he made you feel."

Mitsuko didn't meet Alicia's attitude with another attitude, and it was a step in the right direction. Alicia didn't respond well to being bullied around by anyone. If Mitsuko was just trying to talk to her, though, then Alicia could relax and maybe even open up about what was on her mind. Mitsuko was right, after all, that Alicia lost her appetite because of the conversation and not because she was full. If Mitsuko could notice these things, then maybe she was someone that Alicia could talk to about all of the things bothering her. It wasn't like Zach or her parents were bothering to look for it. They all just ignored it because they were so happy to have met Hayate.

When Mitsuko mentioned Hayate out loud again, Alicia felt the cold shivers passing down her arms at the name. Her eyes grew wide and her head shot up to look Mitsuko in the eye when she heard what she heard next. Hayate had hurt someone else? Alicia never told anyone about what happened to her, so no one could have known about that. Hayate had to have hurt someone else. Her heart was sinking inside of her chest, and it felt like it would fall out at any moment onto the floor below.

She warred with it inside of her head. Mitsuko was right; if he was hurting people, then she couldn't keep silent about it. She was only causing more people to suffer. Minutes passed by in silence, but it was clear Alicia was thinking about it. She just needed to say it out loud.

"He grabbed me once," she said quietly. "In the library. Months ago. He didn't actually hurt me, but I felt like he could have. He put his hand over my mouth and told me to be quiet, acting like he had some sort of control over me. Like he had a right to do that. He didn't. He just snatched me from behind, and he was so strong . . . " Alicia held back the tears and shook her head as her hand came up to touch her mouth. "He could have done something, but Zach was coming and he let me go. He's acted normal ever since, but I remember his voice and I don't trust him."

Mitsuko knew it wasn't going to get her anywhere to be harsh with Alicia, to try and force information out of her. She was uncomfortable as it was and they didn't know each other well. She needed to treat the girl with care and understanding. If she was hostile, she was just going to turn Alicia against her... And she needed all of the allies she could in this matter. She'd already lost Kaiya and Faye.

She cocked her head at Alicia's terrified look. She was really frightened by the vampire. She felt a swell of protectiveness inside her. After what she'd gone through, she didn't want anyone else to be hurt by Hayate.

She felt a little guilty about hiding her own encounter with Hayate. She'd told Alicia to be honest, so other people wouldn't be hurt by him. But she had stayed silent. Now Kaiya and Faye were dead.

Mitsuko frowned deeply as Alicia revealed her own encounter with Hayate. Her hands balled into fists, nails biting into her palms. "Alicia... I know you think your family like Hayate a lot... But you mean more to them than anything. If you told them he made you feel uncomfortable, I think they'd listen." She was starting to get a picture of Hayate in her head. Alicia. Chris. Kaiya. It seemed he liked to target young, innocent girls.

"They might listen, but it doesn't prove anything," Alicia announced in a low voice full of despair. She groaned in the back of her throat. "I know he's creepy and he upsets me, but he never actually did anything to me. It's like . . . maybe they'll find an excuse for it, or maybe Hayate will find an excuse for it, and I'll just look like a fool if I speak because I'm the overreacting teenage girl." She was so afraid that might happen. Her family was so happy with having met Hayate, and it seemed so easy that they could chalk up her reactions as something that they didn't need to take seriously. Them not listening to her scared her more than anything else possibly could scare her.

Alicia thought it was better to remain silent when it came to her family. She had tried to talk to Zach many times before about it, but Zach always said to give Hayate a chance and just get to know him. Alicia had to admit she never cared to try. Though she wanted to remain quiet about it when it came to her family, she wasn't sure about anything else. Maybe she needed to tell someone if Hayate had hurt another person. She looked up at Mitsuko. "Do you know that he's actually hurt someone?"

Mitsuko sighed and nodded. She couldn't say she disagreed with Alicia. While the Kitanos seemed like very nice people, she had very little faith in the parent-child bond from her own upbringing. And Hayate was a skilled liar. No doubt he would be able to find an excuse for her behavior. She put an arm around Alicia, wanting to comfort the girl, who seemed to be very distraught over the situation. "It might not mean much coming from a stranger... But I believe you."

She went quiet for a long time, unsure how to answer Alicia's question. If she did answer in the affirmative, she might have to admit she herself was attacked. If Alicia were to reveal that to her family, they'd know she'd been lying to them. "I was told he attacked two girls," Mitsuko settled on. "But the case was thrown out by the Council. And you can't talk to them about it now..." She paused for a moment. "They're dead. They were the girls who were murdered on Halloween."

It was a comforting thought to know that at least Mitsuko believed her, and Alicia smiled slightly at the older girl's words. "Thank you," she whispered. It gave her the smallest sliver of hope that maybe she could talk to Zach about it. Zach wouldn't disbelieve her if a stranger would take her word on it, and maybe she could let him know how Hayate really made her feel and what had happened that day in the library. As far as Zach knew, Hayate just stumbled into her and told her to stop making racket in the library. While that was true to an extent, Hayate went beyond the necessary means of asking for quiet in the library that normal people didn't pursue.

However, Alicia's heart sunk once more as a bad feeling settled into her stomach once Mitsuko said he had attacked two girls. The teenager was soaking up all of the information, piece by piece, until the final bit of information came out. Alicia's reaction wasn't a very good one.

She jolted away from Mitsuko on the bed, her breathing quickening inside of her chest, and she immediately got up from the bed and started to pace around the room. "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god," Alicia started to repeat over and over, shaking her hands in front of herself and feeling tears stinging the back of her eyes. "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god." Alicia didn't know what else to say or how else to react; fear caused pangs in her heart and she was beginning to seriously freak out.

Mitsuko jumped off the bed when Alicia did. She tried to intercept the girl, to calm her down. This was not good. This could draw the attention of her family. "Alicia... Alicia, you need to calm down." She finally got in front of the girl and took hold of her shoulders to steady her. "Listen to me... We don't know it was Hayate who killed them." She bit her lip. Yeah, she really didn't believe that herself. "And Kaiya and Faye reported the attack to the Council. The case was dismissed, but they know there was friction between them. Unless they're total morons, Hayate's on their suspect list. And your grandmother is on the Council, so they're definitely not morons." Okay, she was trying to lighten a situation in which it was impossible to lighten.

She gave Alicia a serious, but kind, look. "Listen, if Hayate does anything else.... If he makes you feel uncomfortable in any way and you feel you can't talk to your family... You can come talk to me. I'll listen. And I'll make sure he doesn't hurt you. If you can't find me, then you can go to Logan. He's not crazy about the guy either. He and Zach have actually kind of fought about that before. It's going to be all right. I promise. He's not going to hurt you."

Alicia was suddenly stopped when Mitsuko took hold of her, but it hadn’t meant she calmed down yet. Hearing her saying Hayate’s name along with ‘kill’ in the same sentence caused the young girl to flinch. She didn’t want to be hearing this. She wanted Mitsuko to take it back, but it didn’t look like that would happen. Alicia’s brow furrowed when Mitsuko said they reported the case to the Head Council, though, and she actually managed to look up at the other girl.

“The Council doesn’t deal with cases, though,” she said. “Well, not anymore. They leave it in the hands of the Head Guard.” Two tears fell down her cheeks. “My grandma hasn’t spoken about it. I know she would’ve if she heard of it. She likes Hayate, too, but only because of Zach . . . ” Alicia sniffled and fought back the remainder of her tears.

She listened to the advice, but it rang hollow in her ears after what she had heard. Alicia felt like she needed to tell Zach. She needed to tell her family now. If Hayate had done something . . .

Alicia couldn’t bear the thought of him hurting any of them.

All she could do was nod her head in response. Alicia was afraid to speak unless she started crying again.

Mitsuko frowned deeply. It seemed she hadn't gotten any information on Hayate. All she had done was upset this poor girl. That had been the last thing she had meant to do. "The Council might not deal with cases, but they will have heard about it. And they're investigating the deaths in Elysium. They will have looked at who had problems with Kaiya and Faye." She bit her lower lip. "I'll even go to talk to them, let them know what I heard to make sure they're following up on it."

Mitsuko put a hand on Alicia's cheek. "I know you're scared, Alicia. This is all... Really real. But I don't think Hayate will hurt you. Not if he's being friendly with your family." It wasn't much comfort, but it was all Mitsuko could offer.

She sighed. "We should go back down to dinner. I bet your family is wondering where we are."

She nodded her head again. Alicia was too much of a mess to know what to do or who to ask what, but Mitsuko seemed much more capable. She was clearly upset and had no idea what to do, but a little bit of time alone in her room could help her sort out things. Alicia wasn't ready to go back downstairs yet. She definitely wasn't going down looking like this; it would only worry everyone.

The hand on her cheek was comforting, though, as it was something her mom would do. Alicia took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "It doesn't make me any less scared of him," she said softly. "Or the possibility that he might." It wasn't herself she was really worried about; it was the rest of her family. She wanted them to be safe more than her.

"I'll stay up here for while," Alicia said, wiping her eye with the sleeve of her shirt. "They'll freak out if they see I've been crying. You go ahead." Alicia made her way over to her bed again and plopped down. She lied down on it, resting on her side. "Tell them my foot started hurting again. I twisted my ankle, so they won't ask why."

She just wanted to stay up here and take a nap.

Mitsuko wasn't sure what she was going to do. She hadn't really discovered anything else about Hayate, other than giving her more reason to dislike him. She was also feeling a gnawing guilt about lying to the Kitanos. They seemed like such a nice family, yet she had lied to them. This was why she didn't like to get close to people. It made it so much harder when she eventually let them down.

"I know, sweetie," Mitsuko said quietly. "The only thing I can tell you is to try to stay away from him. I'll do everything I can." She truly meant it. While she had only met Alicia, she was filled with a protective streak towards her. "I promise. I won't let him do anything to you."

Mitsuko gave Alicia a comforting smile, touching a hand to her hair. "It'll be all right. Just relax."

With that, she let the girl alone with her thoughts. She went back downstairs to the table to rejoin dinner.
