Monday: November 5, 2007
Who: Corisanthias and Open (
When: 12 P.M.-5 P.M.
Where: The doorsteps of the Waterfront Bungalows/Helicharis Cottages.
What: Corisanthias goes door to door to try to garner the peoples votes.

Corisanthias was not quite sure what he was doing, but he had made up his mind and now he was bound to his decision. He had somewhat of a message to relay, which kept running through his head as he focused on not tripping over his own feet. He had been planning on focusing more on the murders that had occurred, but now with the recent Harpy attack he had even less of an idea what to focus on. He hoped at least that when he began to talk to people he might figure out exactly what they were worried the vice-council would take care of.

Which might help him understand a little more what exactly he was supposed to do if he managed to procure a seat on it.

He inhaled deeply and stepped up to the doorstep, hoping he would not make too big of a fool of himself. He had even decided to dress for the occasion, with a T-shirt and a pair of pants which were making him feel severely constricted, but less like a loon. He reached down and tugged on his pants to try to loosen them a little, and with that, he exhaled, put on a rather strained smile and knocked.

Katy was wearing her pj's, basically a tank top and some stripped shorts. She had been up for a little while; although, she had slept in and had just not gotten around to changing into regular clothes. She had been making it a habit to sleep in most of her days since she had been on vacation. College hadn’t been the place for that to happen, and now that she was completely free of it, she took every opportunity to do so.

She had been sitting in a comfortable plush chair she had in her living room while reading a book when she heard the knock on her door. Katy wished she still had her whole collection with her. She hoped they hadn’t been destroyed like she feared they might have been. When Katy wasn’t writing, she loved reading.

She stood up and walked over to the door and opened it. Surprised to see Corisanthias behind it, she blinked and smiled. She hadn’t seen him since Halloween. While that had been less than a week ago, she hadn’t thought he would drop by so unexpectedly. “Well hello there Cori. I see you found my house pretty easily from just me pointing in the direction, huh?” She opened the door all the way and leaned on the door jamb. “And you’re wearing pants this time. What’s the occasion? Why are you up to so far from the bungalows and the lake?”

Then she realized he was outside and she was just standing there. She stood up and backed away from the door. “Would you like to come in? I could make some coffee or tea if you would rather.”

He was shocked to realize he was on the doorstep of the young woman he had met at the festival. He brought his fist to his heart and gave his little bow, trying to remember why he had come.

"Ah, Kathryn, I wish I could claim to be such a master of direction, but it is coincidence I find myself here. I am actually trying to talk to the people of Elysium to attempt to make a case for their vote in the upcoming Vice-Counsel elections. You may not be aware but I seem to have found myself as a candidate, and after the recent events I feel that this land could use an experienced hunter to help make the land a little safer."

He accepted her invitation and stepped inside, not really sure what to expect. His own Bungalow was rather sparse, having a bed, some chairs, and the materials he used for sculpting. But mainly he spent very little time in it and so did not keep it very decorated.

"That is also the reason for the pants today. I decided I would at least attempt to not stand out too much while asking the people to consider me to represent them."

He had never had either coffee or tea before, and so decided to give the coffee a shot. It sounded like a fun word, where as tea just sounded like the letter.

"Coffee sounds wonderful. I confess I have never sampled it, but the human food I have been sampling has been quite delightful. Especially these sandwiches. Quite a unique flavor I must say."

Katy was amused. He really was going to start calling her Kathryn. The only time she heard that was from her mother when she was still alive and a very young Katy was being bad. After her mother had died Katy’s father hadn’t really had the heart to discipline her and tell her to act like a lady. So he had let her run wild like her brother most of her life.

“The Vice Counsel huh? I think pants were probably a good idea then.” She shut the door after he walked in. Her living room was fairly sparse as well. She had some pieces of large furniture that came with the house. Two overstuffed chairs sat around a large wooden coffee table. But next to the stairs there were stacks of cardboard boxes that still hadn’t been opened. She just didn’t have the heart to unpack everything and set this place up as her own. She did have a book case that was partly filled with books that she had bought in her travels around Europe though.

Katy still hadn’t officially moved into this as being her new home. She still half expected to be able to go back to the ranch in Colorado, and give her dad and her brother the presents she had bought them during her travels.

“You’ve never had coffee before? I’ll warn you, it’ll be a little bit bitter.” She walked into the kitchen and chewed on her inner cheek as she set up her coffee maker. Thankfully they had generators now. She remember the first time she had straight coffee and it had been so bitter that she hadn’t tried it again until finals during college. She had needed it then despite the taste then. Although maybe he’d like it. She’d just have to keep plenty of milk and sugar at hand.

She set two mugs of the dark black liquid on a tray with a sugar bowel and a small picture of milk before returning to the living room and set the tray down on the coffee table. “So you’re running for a seat in the vice council? What other qualifications do you have aside from being an experienced hunter?” She put some sugar in her mug and a little milk before sitting back and crossing her legs.

He stood befuddled in the center of the living room, not quite sure what to do. He settled on gazing about at the set up of her living space, focusing particularly on the book shelf, since he had never read a book before.

"I must say, I still do not understand why people enjoy these pants. I feel as if they are going to trip me at any second if I keep my guard down."

He could smell the coffee wafting and could tell that it was indeed quite bitter. But he was not used to sugar, so he did not feel it would bother him too much. Following her example he picked up a mug, ignoring the cream and sugar and sat down on a chair opposite her.

"Well...as far as qualifications go, besides being an experienced hunter, I am knowledgeable in the ideology of placing the tribe before the self. After all, that is part of the duties of a hunter, to protect the tribe and provide for their well being. As well, my people are raised without the knowledge of self-destructive passions, and I feel that the ability to approach problems with a clear and passionless resolve is necessary in protecting a group not only from outside dangers, but those within."

He paused to sip a little of the warm beverage he was holding, and felt almost a smile come onto his face. It was delicious!

Katy laughed a little. “Please, feel free to sit down. Relax. I’d say get rid of the pants if you wanted, but then the neighbors might start talking.” She grinned at him and winked. She couldn’t help teasing him, but it didn’t seem like he minded much.

“I’m not sure if it’s because we enjoy them. I think it is because humans are slightly prudish, or maybe they just like the idea of taking them off.” She shrugged slightly. “We’ve been wearing pants for thousands of years. Why quit now?”

Katy nodded as he made note of his qualifications. “So in other words, you’d serve the ‘greater good’? How about self-preservation? What issues do you plan to support?” She sipped at her drink and watched as Corisanthias took a sip of his first cup of coffee. The look on his face seemed to say that he enjoyed it.

She was glad he liked it. She had been worried he might spit it out. “So you like your coffee black, huh? That’s pretty impressive for someone who’s never had it before. I still have problems with that myself.”

She tilted her head slightly and watched him. “Cori, can I ask how will you represent me to the council? I don’t know if you see me as anything other than human, but I’m not exactly human anymore.”

He felt red returning to his face, not from her comments, but the winking. Her teasing certainly did the trick, being something altogether new to him.

"Well, whatever the reason, it is too far ingrained in your beings to abandon. The way I have seen people dress, it amazes me you do not all freeze when you remove them. This shirt makes the air feel twice as hot."

The coffee was not helping that, but it was far too good to stop drinking.

"Self preservation? Self preservation becomes a priority only when the tribe is safe. It is the risk that a hunter understands. Tribe before self. So I suppose that means I would serve the 'greater good.' I am not quite sure what issues you mean though. Obviously I care deeply about protecting the people, but I have not seen many problems in this place. Everyone is fed, which would be my second priority, and the only other necessity is the training of the young to prepare them for the future."

He had not assumed that she might be more than human. He did not know why the thought surprised him, however, when everyone he saw looked human. He had to admit, even he looked human when he was not transformed.

"I suppose...calling everyone human may have been insensitive of me. I knew that there were people with...differences, but I have gone for forty years knowing only merfolk and human. But do not let my lack of consideration offend you. I would represent you on the council the same as I would represent a fellow merman, or a..."

He tried to think of the species he had met. There had been the orc...and the imp. And he was sure there were more.

"Well what species are you, if not human?"

He finished off the coffee and let the smile in his eyes speak his answer to his enjoyment.

She smiled as his face turned a delightful shade of pink. She noticed that he would blush after some of the things she said or did pretty easily. She leaned forward and placed her coffee mug back on the tray upon the table. “Hm, you feel twice as hot? Perhaps you’re not wearing material that breathes. Or better yet, you should take up wearing shorts. I’m wearing shorts. Do I look hot?” Katy liked trick questions, but she wasn’t sure it would completely hit home as it would with human males.

She shrugged. “Well if the human is lucky, then they have someone warm their bed before they take their pants off. Makes things a lot easier, so I hear.”

“Self preservation is just as important. What would happen to the tribe if something happened to the leader? I do like the emphasis on education, but I doubt you would have to worry to much about keeping people fed. Seeing as we rarely have to trade for goods now, it seems less of a priority. How would you go about protecting the town from another event like what happened with the harpies?”

“I’m not offended. For most of my life I was human, and sometimes I still like to think of myself as one. No, actually I’ve been a werewolf for about eight years now. I make look like I’m around 20 years old, but I am actually 25 years old. Apparently I age differently now.” She shrugged her shoulders slightly again.

She stood up as soon as she noticed he had finished his coffee. She leaned over the table and held out her hand for his mug. “You finished that pretty quickly. I take it that you liked it alright. Would you like some more? I have a whole pot left.”

Whatever she did to make him blush, she was good at. Even if he had spent a lot of time among people, he would still be blushing just as badly. Unfortunately for Katy's playing, she had started using insinuations Corisanthias did not understand.

"You do not appear to be hot. Your face is neither flushed nor sweating, so I assume that you are at a fine temperature."

As for her other comment...

"I...I have never shared a bed before. In fact...except for the time I spent recovering on a bed after arriving in this place, I have never slept in a bed at all."

That was about when the caffeine started to kick in and he felt his hand begin to twitch.

"Coffee? I'd love some more coffee? Maybe you can tell me what a werewolf is while you get it? And you're only 25? You don't look a day over...well...I actually don't know how people age so I couldn't tell you."

He could feel his speech getting more disjointed and did his best to focus himself. He needed to focus on why he'd come.

"If something happens to the leader, the tribe lives on and the next to take their place steps up to the duty. But the tribe lives on. As far as the Harpies go..."

He had kind of missed the whole ordeal when he was swimming with Nuray, and had decided to remain in the water the rest of the day so he was partly surprised to see what had happened when he emerged from the water.

"Surely they must have had a reason to attack. I have never met a creature that attacked without a reason. Now, perhaps they were hungry, but if they were hungry than this would not have come as a surprise. But whatever the reason, if they can be negotiated with, than we reason with them, and if they cannot be reasoned with, than..."

He didn't want to finish that sentence. War was something he had never experienced, only heard of in human legend. But he knew that they were quick to go to it, and vicious in their pursuit of it.

Oops. Katy had forgotten to warn him about the caffeine. She covered her mouth with her hands when she realized her mistake. Caffeine was just a normal part of her own life that it must have completely slipped her mind as to what it did to those who weren't used to it. She stood up and walked around the table and took the mug away from him. "Hm, well I think you may have had enough actually. Uh, coffee actually has a pretty mild stimulant in it called caffeine. We normally drink it to remain awake or alert."

"Never shared a bed, huh? A handsome guy like you? Why's that?" She reached out and took his shaking hands in her own to still them.

"I personally have not heard about anything dealing with the why or the reasoning behind the harpy attack, aside from it seems they just wanted to cause a lot of mayhem. They certainly made a big mess of things."

She smiled as she let go of his hands and patted his knee before getting up. "I doubt vice council would have the authority to declare anything to drastic. So I wouldn't worry about that."

She sighed and looked thoughtful. What counteracted coffee? She had heard that black coffee was good for hangovers, but she didn't really put much stock into that. And although it would be interesting to see Corisantias a little tipsy, that would be just down right unethical.

"How about some water instead?" She grabbed the mug, walked back over to the kitchen, and wondered what to tell him about being a were exactly.

"Well, every night that there is a full moon I change into something that resembles a wolf, sort of. It's really kind of monstrous and very painful. Like something that came out of a horror flick. Kinda like the "Thing from the Black Lagoon" movies." She smiled slightly at the reference as she filled his mug with some cold water. "It's not really a pretty sight."

When she took his hand in hers, his lost control of his other hand which began strumming his fingers rapidly against the chair. This seemed to coincide with his losing the ability to speak clearly.

"In my tribe...that is to say I have this scar...not many mates to choose from and...it is all very selective and I missed..."

He stood up suddenly, feeling very hot all of a sudden.

"Do you mind if...you see the coffee seems to be making me very hot all of a sudden."

Before she could respond he had already taken the shirt off, visibly sweating from the increase in his metabolism. He sat back down to try to retain some semblance of normalcy.

"Water...water sounds good. But what is a wolf? I am unfamiliar with land creatures. And you turn into a...monster? I cannot believe someone with your...charm could ever turn into something so horrible. If it is painful why do you do it?"

"A scar?" She blinked and looked a little confused. "Why would that keep anyone from being with you?" As he took his shirt off she tilted her head and looked him over. She didn't see any visible scars, and she didn't see how that would turn anyone off directly. Merpeople must be even more picky than humans.

She brought him the water quickly and stayed close unless he needed more. "Calm down. Take some deep breaths. Maybe I should have made you some decaf." She looked a little worried.

"A wolf, it's a land predator." She tried to think of an appropriate oceanic equivalent. "I guess you could say they are sort of like sharks. They hunt packs, and look a little like dogs. I don't really turn into a dog so much though. I was very scared the first time it happened."

"Are you going to be alright? Maybe I should take your temperature, you're sweating buckets." She touched his cheek with the back of her hand and then touched her own with her other hand to see if there was a difference in temperature.

He drank the water quickly, calming down a little bit. It hadn't been the caffeine that was making him flustered. That just helped.

"The scar is...it is more visible in my natural form. I nearly lost my tail when I became an accepted adult. I spent most of my courting years in recovery, and...well by the time I was fully recovered I had gone beyond my time. There were no available mates, and I simply accepted that life I was not fated to have a mate."

Half of him wanted to run form her touch, and the other half wanted to enjoy it. He settled on trying to keep his normal emotionless state.

He could not believe that the woman in front of him was not only a shapeshifter, but a hunter no less. He had never met a female more dangerous than a male before. He decided to reassure her, before pressing his questions.

"I am fine, these clothes are just too much for me when..."

When what? He wasn't even sure what exactly was making him so hot.

"When I have not spent a great deal of time wearing them. I am just glad it was with someone I had met before that I...what is it that is sometimes said, lost my cool?"

He did not understand the phrase, but he knew people used it when someone had begun acting foolishly.

"So...you turn into a wolf, much like how I turn into a human when I leave the water? But why is your transformation painful and frightening?"

"Oh? Is that it then? Well that is unfair." She felt sorry for him. Katy herself had only first slept with someone while she was traveling. What they say about Italians being very friendly, is very true. "Why just accept it? Surely there were other females in other tribes?"

She lowered her hand from his face and smiled a little. "Well you feel alright. Nothing to worry about anyways. It must just be some color in your cheeks." She went back to the kitchen to get him a wet towel to cool down. "You had me pretty worried there for a second."

"So you strip every time you get over heated? What a show! You must have been out all day doing this campaigning thing." She came back and placed the towel around his neck. She then went over and picked his shirt off from the ground, pulling it back right-side-out.

"Not so much a wolf as it is a strange hybrid of human and wolf. When I was like 17 years old I was bitten in the arm by a another werewolf and from what I understand from what happened it is a kind of virus that causes me to mutate when the moon is full."

She winced slightly at the memory of her last turning. She wasn't sure she liked talking to Corisantias about something so ugly as suddenly growing hair all over her body and having the face of wild animal. "My bone structure physically changes as well as what I look like, and I'm conscious during the process. You wouldn't recognize me at all after the change."

He grew serious about the topic they were approaching, losing the hint of humor he had been trying to keep.

"I think you misunderstand exactly the position my tribe was in. There were no other tribes around. There were no other options. We were alone out there. The visitors were few and far between, and they never stayed. The only thing I could have done to make up for missing the courtship years would have been to either murder one of the married in my tribe, wait for someone to die of natural causes, or abandon the tribe and live with the humans. There was nothing to do but accept it. To be alone was the decision that the currents fated for me, until I came to this place."

He sighed. He was getting heated in a completely different way, though it was not evident in his tone.

"I am sorry for getting so flustered and...defensive. Perhaps I should steer away from this coffee. It seems to have made me quite agitated."

He leaned his head back against the towel staring at the ceiling. When he brought his head back down he saw her wince, and felt bad for bringing up bad memories.

"I am also sorry if talking about this is painful. You do not have to dwell on bad memories to satisfy my curiosity. I am...trying to learn as much as possible about the new life the currents have brought me to, but I do not want to force you to relive the pain the currents have brought you."

Katy reached up behind her neck, at the base of her hairline and scratched gently. She didn't think it was just the coffee that had done it. Sometimes she lacked that all important quality called tact. Growing up with just her father and her brother, life for her became about getting what you wanted before the others took it all. But that was hardly an excuse, for not paying attention to where her mouth was going.

"I'm sorry. I forget that I'm still very ignorant of your situation. I do that sometimes. Feel free to tell me when to back off at anytime. I won't feel offended at all." She smiled at him again to let him know she was alright, and that she would drop the subject all together.

Katy didn't know how to explain it to Corisantias. Becoming a werewolf had been her secret for so long, that she never even thought about having to describe it anyone. She sat back down in her chair across from him and leaned on her knees. "Well, It's hard to explain. I don't want you to think I'm some sort of monster or anything, but that's pretty much what I am." She sighed and leaned back.

"I've gained more control over what happens when I turn, but still for the most part I can't control myself when it happens. I guess that's the scariest part of the whole thing."

He shook his head, trying to shake away the thoughts running through it. He had never been jealous before of those who had not missed the courting age. Had never thought anything but how to move forward. It was this place that was changing him. Giving him time to think about more than survival.

"No, no, I think it only fair for you to ask questions as well. I did not mean to let my anger get ahead of me. I have not thought about what I have missed in life since losing the opportunity. It seems we all have parts of our past we would rather not face."

He took a seat again, trying to relax though the mood had changed.

"Even if you change from some twist of fate, I could never think of you as a monster. Everyone has moments where they lost control over their actions. Even myself."

As his outburst proved. As the way he had arrived in Elysium proved. Perhaps his people were not as good at keeping their emotions in check as he had originally thought.

Katy thought about it and she wondered how the subject had changed so drastically from him explaining to her about why he should be voted into the vice-council to the subject they were currently on. It was probably her own fault as Corisanthias didn't seem to have ulterior motives in anything he did.

She smiled a little at him and sighed a bit and decided to turn the conversation back toward his campaign. "So, you were saying you would be good on the vice-council right? Would you stand up the high council if they did something you didn't agree with or something that you didn't feel would benefit the people? And how exactly would you do that?"

She tilted her head and looked over at the window. Maybe she should plant a garden or something. Fresh herbs would be nice. "You wouldn't know it was me Cori. In my other form I can't speak and it doesn't know reason. I become as wild as any other animal in the world."

Katy placed her arms on the chair's arm rests and leaned back to listen to him again. Her curious nature had led her into trouble more than once in her life, and she didn't want to have Cori upset with her over it. He obviously missed his home and those he considered family as much as she did and it took her a little while to realize she was probably just opening barely healed wounds talking about it.

He was glad to return to the topic of the council. It allowed him to calm himself and regain his composure.

"There have been times in my history where the decisions made by the elders of my tribe were not those I could agree with. During those times we were encouraged to express our opinion and if we could make the elders see our way, then the decision would be changed. However, if the elders were not convinced then they went about with their original plan. I would attempt to do the same, and if I truly felt the council were putting the people in harms way, I would stand up to them and not go through with their decision. The fact that they are the high council means they must be wise, but they are not my elders and I obey them only so much as I feel it is for the benefit of all."

It helped that he had not directly run into the laws yet. It was easier to talk about things that he did not see happening.

He was confused that her animal form would have no reason. He had never encountered such a creature before.

"Well, I cannot speak for the land animals, but all the animals in the sea I have met have had some sort of reason behind their actions. Most have no more thoughts in their head than "eat, swim, breath" but surely there must be some part of you left inside."

He did not mean to appear angry with bringing up the past. He had never been angry before about it, but something about this place, the people he was with were beginning to open his eyes to things he had missed in his life.

She nodded. "Good answer. Checks and balances, my friend, are a very good thing."

She stewed over thinking of another question. The political system here was so different from what she was used to. She really couldn't imagine a system of government that she could compare it too.

"Well, when I say no reason, I guess it means it does not have my form of reasoning. The wolf inside of me likes to hunt. I become an animal that for a long time I was unable to understand. It has taken a lot of time and work to get to the point of control I do have over it."

Katy had issues with control especially since that first night when she turned. It had been frightening for her still conscious mind that had been unable to stop this new self that terrified her.

She had stopped trying to tease him, but she wanted to continue, hoping to lighten the mood. "So are you working on a sculpture currently? I was wondering if you have ever thought of using a nude model for your art."

We merpeople can at least swim very fast. I have heard the cries of hunters in a frenzy and must say I can understand then how it could be difficult."

It came out ruder than he meant it, but they were very squishy.

"I have never had a model of any sort. I have worked primarily on replicating things I see. Driftwood on the lake shore, trees (which he was quite impressed with) even fish that I remember well, but never...a person. For me it would make little difference if they were nude or clothed. Nude would probably be easier, as there are less flappy layers to contend with."

Katy's mouth fell open and her body shook with laughter. Had he really just called her that. "Soft and squishy? Did you just call me soft and squishy?" She placed a hand over her mouth and started to laugh.

"I don't believe you've touched me enough to know if whether I am squishy or not." While it sounded like a very insulting thing to say, the way he said it was just so blunt and matter of fact that it cracked her up.

"How would you like if someone called you that? I'm not sure if I should forgive you for that. Tell me what exactly about me is squishy?" She couldn't help but smile at the word.

She shrugged her shoulders. "My father didn't take pictures of people much either. He was more interested in landscapes. Many great human sculptors used nude models."

He puffed out his chest which was all muscle, and pulled the sea weed aside.

"You could call me squishy but you would be wrong. Hunters do not get squishy, we just get very hard. But I have met many humans who were very squishy. You do not seem as squishy as them, but you are right, I have not touched you enough to know for sure."

He was interested in hearing about her father, about other artists in general.

"Well perhaps I will have to try a model someday when I feel more confident. What types of landscapes did your father enjoy?"

"I think I'll be the judge of that." Katy got up out of her chair and walked around the coffee table to where he was sitting. She sat down on the arm of the chair then she reached out and touched his still bare chest because he never put his shirt back on. After having a thoughtful pause, mainly for the dramatic effect, she nodded and agreed with him.

"I will concede that you are not squish nor soft around your pecs. But I cannot with all honesty say you that you aren't squishy in other places of your body that I can't see and haven't touched." She crossed her arms and smirked at him.

She remained on the chair and looked upward. "He really likes taking pictures of the mountains and waterfalls. I think he would like it here very much."

"I don't have any copies of my father's work, but there was one I recall from when I was young. It was a perfect picture of the Pacific Ocean with calm waters and perfectly horizontal horizon. I used to like to turn it over so the sea was in the sky."

He had to think about it for a second and realized there was only one part of him that was squishy and exposed, and that was only when he was human. It felt strange sometimes to have that part of him not protected in his body. It made him feel very...exposed.

"I do believe the only squishy part of my anatomy would not remain squishy very long if it were handled."

Hearing her talk about waterfalls and mountains made him realize he had never actually seen these things. He did not even know what a waterfall was, except to deduce from its name that it involved water falling. He was even more interested to hear her talk about the picture of the ocean, about turning the water into the sky.

"In my world the ocean was always the sky. If you want to experience it first hand I could always help you. Whenever I breech, the water becomes my horizon and I fall into it over and over. I could always throw you up and let you feel it."

Katy was perched precariously on the edge of the chair's arm, and at the mention of the "squishy part of his anatomy" she laughed so hard that she slipped and fell off the overly stuffed chair. She landed with a thump on the wooden floor and blinked a few times before giggling again.

"Not so very graceful am I? And to think my mom wanted me to be a dancer." She grinned up at him from her position on the floor. "So what part of my anatomy is considered squishy then?" She didn't bother getting up, and put her hands behind her head.

"I've heard that there are waterfalls to the south at Silme lagoon. I'd like to see that. Maybe I could take a picture of it."

"So I'd be sort of in the same position now, except in the air and falling head first into the water." She shrugged. "Sounds fun. When you aren't to busy with your campaign we'll have to do that." The water was probably getting pretty cold now, but Katy had her full body wet suit packed somewhere in one of the boxes she had brought with her. The wet suit wasn't the most alluring thing to wear, but it would keep her warmer than her bikini would.

He leapt up when she fell, afraid that she had somehow hurt herself. Her giggles reassured him that she was unharmed.

"Well we are lucky that it is not your head that is squishy or we would both be in trouble. Perhaps if you landed on your chest, the two squishiest parts of your anatomy I have noticed would cushion your fall."

He felt awkward standing over her as she lay on the ground so he propped himself sideways on the floor facing her.

"I think you should. Not only for their beauty, but it is a great honor to be able to follow in ones fathers footsteps."

He had not thought his idea through very well, though it had made sense to him.

"Yes, but for a few seconds the ground would be the water, and that is the best I can do as a Merman. You will have to find some other creature here who can hover you over the water longer."

He could not make a promise of when though. He did not know how much effort this campaign would take and did not want to make a promise he could not keep. Would not make a promise he could not keep.

Katy laughed again and turned her head so that she was facing him as well. "Cori, I swear you say the strangest things. You don't know much about a woman's anatomy do you?" She placed a hand on her chest indicating her breasts. "They are actually pretty sensitive. It would have hurt a lot more had I landed on them."

"My father's footsteps?" She huffed a little. Had that been the only reason she went into journalism and photography? Perhaps. "Before he started doing art my father was what humans called a photojournalist. He went places all over the world and took pictures and wrote stories about the things he saw."

She thought about it for a moment. "Hmm, I don't think hoovering in the air like that would be a good idea. I might get sick, and that wouldn't be a pretty sight."

Which was not much.

"Were there many people interested in the world then? He there not been visitors from beyond the ice we probably would have assumed the world ended where we stopped seeing it."

He recalled when she had choked on the candy the week before, and decided he also did not want to see her sick.

"Well good, then some other creature will not take the honor of flinging you through the water from me."

Dominic and Corisanthias - 3 P.M.

2009-01-15 11:22 pm UTC (link)
No rest for the weary, or at least that's what Dominic believed. Though he had placed posters around the town the day before, he was out doing it again today. He didn't mind the work, or the exercise, as he moved from one place to another to put up his campaign ads. He talked with citizens, too, especially if they seemed curious about his ads. It was the perfect time to get his name out amongst the people.

Dominic hadn't expected to run into any of the other candidates so early in the campaign, but he found himself only a few meters away from the man he remembered was named Cors...something Xylo...something. Xylophone? He didn't know, he just knew that the name was a doozy and he couldn't remember it for the life of him. Either way, it looked like the man was just as eager as Dominic was to win some votes, and that meant something in the siren's book. He was always an admirer of those who worked hard to get something they wanted.

"Well hi there," he said with a wide grin. He held an outstretched hand toward the merman as he approached. "Thought I'd introduce myself to a fellow nominee. Dominic Powell," he said in a friendly manner. "It's a pleasure."

He recognized the man with his hand extended towards him from some of the posters he had seen around town. The man seemed eager enough to meet him, which made Corisanthias glad that the running was not the competition he had been fearing it might be. In trips to the mainland he had occasionally seen some of the stranger things humans got competitive about.

He remembered his manners, and took the outstretched hand in greeting, recalling the strange hand shaking ritual that people partook in on the land. He had only done it a few times and so his own return of the gesture was awkward and a little jerky.

"Dominic, it is a pleasure to meet you as well, and I admit a relief to meet someone else running for a position on the counsel. I am Corisanthias Xyllaniasodas, though people seem to be taken with calling me 'Cori' as of late."

He was still getting used to the idea of shortening names, a concept like hand shakes that perplexed him.

Dominic wasn't so competitive that he would be a dick to the other guy, so when the guy shook his hand he returned the gesture heartily. The guy seemed a little bit unsure about the whole art of handshaking that Dominic didn't hold the gesture for long. He pulled his hand back slowly, nodding when the guy introduced himself. His name was definitely a mouthful, but Dominic was determined to say the entire thing.

"Cori, huh?" He seemed to saying it out loud to see how it sounded. "I think I'll stick with Corisanthias." He patted the man on the shoulder in a friendly manner. "It suits you." Dominic crossed his arms over his chest and then rocked back and forth on his feet. Dominic saw this as an opportunity to get to know his competition; as he saw it, this man was potentially someone who would share one of the Vice-Council seats with him. The siren had no doubt in his mind that he would win one of the seats, either with or without deceitful tactics.

"So Corisanthias, where are you from originally?"

He was glad the handshake was brief. He had never had a problem with touching others, as it was a common practice among his people, but the handshake was just too awkward a movement for him. It was not something that could have easily been replicated under water with the same fluidity that it went on land.

"Well I should hope that my name suits me. I have gone by it for forty years now and it is the only one I have."

He found the mans confidence comforting. After his conversation with Kathryn about humans and shame, he was beginning to half-expect none of them could be confident with themselves.

"I am from a small tribe who lived beneath the place people call the Arctic Ocean. I would return the gesture and ask where you are from, but if I may be honest, I know of Alaska, Russia, and little else in terms of land geography."

Dominic couldn't help the laugh that came from him. He wasn't expecting Corisanthias to reply like that, and he smiled in amusement. "I should've been clearer," he said. "You just don't look like a 'Cori'," he reiterated. "But, I'll call you whatever you prefer," Dominic added. Sometimes nicknames were given to people without their expressed permission; Dominic himself had been on the receiving end of some nicknames that he didn't like - Domi, Domino, and Nici just to name a few.

The siren was fairly confident in himself. Sure, he had some insecurities - what normal human didn't? - but he didn't let them get to him. He was comfortable with who he was, inside and out. Dominic's eyes widened when the man revealed that he lived beneath the ocean, which meant that he was one of two things - a merman, or a selkie. The siren's smile widened - merpeople and selkies were lovers of the sea, just like sirens were, and already Dominic found himself liking Corisanthias more just because of it.

"I'm from the States," Dominic stated. "That's way out West," he added. "But you - beneath the Arctic, huh? Did a little tour in the Arctic once. We were there for 6 months. Colder than hell, but damn pretty." Dominic liked reminiscing about his time in the Navy, and there were times he regretted not staying in the service longer. "So, are you a merman? Selkie? Not too many of us praeternaturals can live beneath frigid waters."

"Ah, I see now. Forgive me, I am still learning the subtleties of conversation land side. The version of English I learned is slightly...ancient."

He was shocked to hear the man had voluntarily gone to the area of his home. From what he had gathered humans hated the cold. It never ceased to amaze him that despite not liking the chill, they would still voluntarily go there.

"I am a merman, and I must confess the water was not so frigid to me, though that is from living in it my whole life. If I may be honest, the weather of this land is actually far hotter than I am used to, and I am having a few issues adapting to the temperature. This is actually more clothing than I am comfortable wearing, but I wanted to be, what is it that is said, presentable."

He was glad he was not in a house at the moment, as he had been finding the temperature even warmer in doors than out. At the present moment he was not even sweating.

"No worries, my man, no worries," he said. Slang was different all around the world and he didn't expect everyone to understand him all the time.

"A merman, huh?" One would have thought that being a siren, Dominic would have met other sea loving praeternaturals in his life, but the truth was that this was his first time. He had hoped, once a long time ago when he first joined the Navy, to maybe run into a mermaid while while he was out at sea. Old wives' tales that he thought might've held some truth to them. He never met any mermaids during his tour, though he was sure they existed.

And here he was standing right in front of one. "Yeah, humans don't really dig the whole 'naked' thing, unless you're in the privacy of your own home. Then it's okay." Dominic didn't know why it was taboo to be naked; he didn't see anything wrong with the human form. Most people appreciated nudity, but only when it was private.

"So how goes the campaigning," he asked. "Have you talked to many people yet?"

The unexpected knock at the door startled Zane from his near slumber. He practically jumped at the sound, looking around as if something had just happened. He blinked slowly, pushing the sleep from his eyes as he realized that the knock was coming from the front door. Amada was probably in her studio working, or resting in the bedroom, either way he didn't expect her to get the door.

"Coming," he said out loud to the person outside his bungalow. "I'm coming," he said again just as he reached the door. He twisted the handle and pulled it open, smiling at the veritable stranger that stood there. Zane thought the man looked familiar though, and he rubbed the blurriness out of his eyes just to see if that would help. It did, a little, and while the man looked like someone he knew, Zane was certain they had never met before.

"Hey," he said with a scratchy voice. He cleared his throat, fingers coming up to pinch the front of his neck gently. "Sorry bout that," he said with a grin. "Hey." It was much clearer this time, and it brought a smile to his face. He chuckled a bit, and opened the door a little wider. "My voice... it does this thing when I'm tired..." He waved it off. He was sure the person didn't want to hear about the weird thing his voice did when he woke up from a nap. "What can I help you with?" Zane was always polite with people, even those he didn't know.

Corisanthias was feeling a bit nervous after what had happened with Kathryn earlier. He hoped that he wasn't invited in for coffee. At least not while wearing these clothes.

He was surprised by the scratchiness of the mans voice, and hoped he had not interrupted him from something important. It was a risk he had to play with this door to door business.

He went through the traditional bow of his people, and extended his hand in what he was learning was the traditional greeting of others.

Zane smiled a bit more after Corisanthias' introduction. He shook the man's hand firmly, and nodded as he spoke. "Corisanthias Xyllaniasodas, well that's a mouthful, Mr. Xyllaniasodas," he said as a joke, chuckling a bit as he did. "You know, I was nominated for the vice council," he admitted once he was done laughing. He leaned against the frame of his door, his arms crossed over his chest in a casual manner. Zane had momentarily thought that being on the vice council might've been a good thing, but now that he and Amada were having a baby, his priority became his family.

"I didn't accept it, though," Zane added after a moment. "My wife's pregnant, and I need to take care of my family. But!" He clapped his hands once and pushed himself away from the frame. "Tell me, Mr. Xyllaniasodas. Why do you think you're qualified for the position." Zane might not have had the time to run for vice council, but that didn't mean he wasn't interested in why other people wanted to run for one of the seats. He cared about the well-being of the haven, and that included its political state. It wasn't much now, but in time it could grow. What happened in these first few years would shape the future; Zane firmly believed that.

So far, this Corisanthias guy seemed like a nice and proper fellow, and Zane was curious to hear what the man had to say.

Corisanthias missed the joke, but was surprised to hear that he was talking to someone who had not only been nominated, but had turned the position down!

"Ah, your wife is with child? Well you have my congratulations. As we say in my tribe, may they be born strong as a whale and fast as a shark."

This man was so enthusiastic Corisanthias felt himself grow slightly self conscious about his own monotone mannerisms. It had never been as evident, but he had not met anyone like this man before, and he was sure expecting a child added to whatever energy he normally had.

"Well there are a few reasons I feel I am qualified. I was a hunter in my tribe, which involved sacrifice of the people of body, and mind, and I understand the necessity of putting needs after the needs of the tribe. As well, you may have noticed I am less...emotional than others around here, and so feel I will be less likely to act on passion, and more likely to act on reason."

Zane was just an enthusiastic person by nature. He believed that life was serious enough without him having to add to it. That wasn't to say he was never serious - he took his career very seriously, and he his position as a doctor seriously. But overall, he was a laid back, happy-go-lucky type of guy. He couldn't help it if other people felt more subdued around him just because he was so... rambunctious at times.

"Well thank you, Mr. Xyllaniasodas. I will pass the sentiment onto my wife." Zane certainly did hope that their child would be strong and healthy. It was the one thing he was most concerned with at the moment, well, other than listening to Corisanthias speak about his qualifications. The metahuman nodded his head to show he was listening, and though he might not have seemed the type, he already had questions lined up for the man standing on his doorstep.

"So you're from a tribe?" Well that was interesting. He had never met anyone from a real tribe before. "What sort of tribe?" He asked. "From where? Did your tribe have a similar type of government with a vice-council?" Oh yes, the questions were just beginning, and hopefully Corisanthias would be able to keep up with them. Zane wasn't looking to make the man stumble, far from it! He was just truly curious, and as any curious person he was bound to ask questions.

He took a brief moment to think about each of the questions before answering them. He did not want to stumble and speak incorrectly.

"We were a small tribe, two hundred at most. Far away in a place the people around us called "The Arctic Ocean" though we had no name for it. We lived beneath the ice and survived how we could, hunting the surrounding waters and occasionally trading with the land dwellers for supplies."

But how to describe his peoples council.

"For our tribe, the closest thing to a council we had were the elders. We respected the elders age, though there word was not law. Beneath the elders, the hunters were the next most respected, though that was determined by skill, rather than age. Leadership for us was not something to be won, but an honor bestowed upon us through proof of skill."

He was keeping up rather well, though talking about his own people was far easier than talking about himself. But he was ready for the next wave of questioning from the enthusiastic man.

The explanation that Corisanthias gave him was fascinating, and Zane was intelligent enough to deduce that the man was of the mer-type. Though, truth be told, Zane was only familiar with merpeople and not any other type of water-dwelling praeternatural. "Wow, the Arctic, huh? Bet this cold front we're having is nothing compared to living under those water, eh?" He chuckled a bit, not laughing directly at Corisanthias but rather at the mental image of how he would fare under such extreme conditions. He would be a popsicle, that was certain.

Zane nodded at Corisanthias' description of his tribe's council. "There is something to be said about the wisdom that comes with age," he said thoughtfully. "But I think that in a place like this, it's only fair that everyone gets to vote for the Vice-council. It's hard to show skill in a world like this, unless we had Olympic type competitions, but I doubt they'd ever do that. The Head Council here seems pretty open minded about things."

The psychokinetic sometimes had a tendency to ramble, and when he realized that he had for a bit he quickly stopped. "You know," he said, opening his door a little wider. "Do you want to come in for coffee or something? We can speak a little more comfortably in the living room. At least we'll get to sit." He chuckled. "I don't know about you, but my dogs are killing me!" After a full day of work at the pavilion Zane was more than ready for some rest, and all he wanted to do was to kick up his feet and relax.

He smiled at the comment on the weather. At least someone understood the heat he was feeling.

"No, in fact I was not really aware that it was growing any colder. The clothes you see me in are actually more than I normally wear, and they are making me much warmer than I am used to."

He nodded, glad the man understood the workings of the tribal system. It was less he would have to explain.

"I would love to come in, though I will have to pass on the coffee. Water would be wonderful though." He had grown fascinated with the concept that he could drink water, fresh water at that, when he was in human form. "That is terrible! Zane welcomed Corisanthias into his home, and led him toward the living room. "Go ahead and have a seat," he said as he went into the kitchen to get his guest some water. It amused Zane to no end just how rural they had all become. Most of the people in the haven had come from big cities, where industry reigned supreme, and Zane was no exception. It was a little hard at first adjusting to things here, but now he was used to it. In fact, he liked it a little more than the world he left behind. At least here he had a chance to speak with 'politicians' face-to-face. This would have never happened back in New York.

He emerged from the kitchen with a glass of water in one hand, and a beer in the other. He handed the drink to Corisanthias, and then sat down in a lounge chair that was opposite of the other man. It would make talking with him easier. He laughed a little at the comment about his 'dogs'. Zane held up a hand. "No no, they're not really killing me. And by 'dogs' I mean my feet." He pointed downward toward them. "Sorry, American slang." He chuckled a bit and then leaned back in his chair.

The two continued to talk about the Vice-Council and other things for a few minutes before the merman took his leave. It was nice chatting with the nominee, and Zane hoped he would get to meet with him again soon.
