Who: Chris and Hayate
When: Evening
Where: Hayate's cottage
What: Chris tells Hayate about the harpies

As soon as Chris was done at the medical pavilion she marched all the way to Hayate's house. She didn't want to see anyone else, and she doubted that Emily would miss her right away anyway. Charlie knew where she was going, and as far as she was concerned he was the only one she needed to answer to. He was her big brother, after all, and they were all the other had left in the world.

She reached the vampire's house just as the sun was setting in the sky. Deep shades of yellow and purple painted the sky. There was just enough light left to illuminate the few surface scratches that decorated her face and neck. The harpies were not kind to the young girl earlier that day, and she might not even be standing there on Hayate's doorstep if it weren't for her brother and everyone who saved her.

She had been treated at the medical pavilion for her injuries, the most serious of which had been the small puncture wounds in each of her shoulders. The patterns of the wounds were that of claws, the one that belonged to the harpies that carried her into the air.

What upset Chris the most, though, was that the grotesque creatures had taken her mother's necklace. Chris was beginning to think she wasn't meant to keep the necklace at all considering how often it disappeared from her possession. She sniffled as she knocked on the door, and when the vampire finally opened it she threw herself into his arms.

"Hayate..." she sniffled into his chest. She wasn't yet crying, but she was very close to it. Chris looked up at him with watery blue eyes. She was pouting slightly. "I hate harpies!" She whined before she entered his house.

The knock on his door distracted him from nothing in particular. In fact, the vampire was considering a walk about the time the knock resounded through his cottage. He made his way to the door and opened it, surprised to find Chris there with sealed cuts upon her face and neck. Immediately, his mind jumped to conclusions and the thought emerged in his head that whoever had done this would have a little less skin in the morning once he had gotten a hold of them, but Chris's arms found their way around his middle as she buried her face into his chest.

His eyes had grown wide, the ire evident upon his face, as he tried to wait for her to say it. Who did it, a voice thundered in the back of his head, but the girl answered him soon enough. As she pulled away from him and walked into the house, Hayate's eyes followed her as he shut the door behind her.

"Harpies?" he echoed, confusion coloring his features for only a moment. Recognition lit up shortly after, his blue-eyed gaze turning to steel. "Harpies did this?" Hayate demanded, walking towards her. "Where?" he immediately inquired, wanting to know the details of what had happened. "When?"

She was pouting still when she settled upon the couch in Hayate's living room. The girl's eyes were watching him carefully, and she could see the anger shining in his eyes. "This afternoon," she said with a small sniffle. "I was up in the mountains just north of our cottage," she said. "Just me, Charlie, and Wolvie." Chris reached a hand up to the scratches on her face. They would heal in no time with the medicine she got from the medical pavilion, it was the waiting for it to heal that was a pain in the neck. The wounds still stung a little, and Chris flinched when she touched a particularly sensitive scratch.

The young girl looked over at the vampire and tried to smile for him. "It was scary," she said softly. "They were so ugly looking. And they tried to hurt Wolvie, and then they lifted me into the air!" Her pout deepened. Telling Hayate about what happened though made it seem all the better. She felt safe with him, and she felt that he could protect her.

She reached for the hem of her sweater, and pulled it over her head. She was wearing a long-sleeved shirt underneath it, and she pulled down one of her shoulders. "This happened when they lifted me," she said showing him the puncture wounds. "They have really sharp claws. And they're ugly. And they smell!" She sighed and let the material go and it slid over the reddened marks.

"I hate them!" She reached a hand out to him, fingers opening and closing against her palm calling him toward her. She wanted Hayate to hold her since she was certain that he could make it all better.

Hayate had been in the mountains before, and he remembered the harpies. Of course, he had minded his business in those days and none turned an eye his way. They used to screech in an ungodly manner, digging their claws into his mind and making his thoughts bleed with anguish. His sensitive hearing could not take it at the time. He had been out of his mind, deprived of human blood for months. Hayate recalled the deranged state of his mind during the beginning of his stay here, how words and pieces of thought never came together to make a full picture. He was more like an animal than a person. Now, however, he walked like any other person among them. Thanks to human blood. Its easy availability had its perks.

He followed the beckoning motion of her fingers until he reached her and took the delicate hand they were attached to into his gentle grasp. She was so fragile that he could break each bone in her hand if he squeezed hard enough. With a soft pull, he ushered her to her feet.

Bringing his other hand to her face, the tips of two fingers lightly touched the side of Chris's temple beside her fallen hair and trailed down to her cheek. "Let's put something on them, yes?" It was strange how one moment he could be so cruel and the next he could be so sweet. One minute he was hurting her, and then he was tending to the wounds. "I think your ointment is here in the cupboard of my bathroom."

Even if they had put some on her at the medical pavilion, Hayate did not care. She could use more and ensure she would heal soon from the scratches and puncture marks. He knew human skin was slow healing, and it would take time for them to fade. He wanted them to vanish from her skin now, and those harpies . . .

They were going to meet a nasty end.

The trailing of his fingertips against her skin caused a pleasant tingling come forth. She smiled at him and nodded. Chris wasn't thinking about how different Hayate was now compared to the violent rage he displayed the other day. He was still the same person in her mind, and while his outburst was something that while scary at the time it didn't bother her now.

"Can I stay here tonight?" She asked suddenly as she moved around him to head toward the stairs. She grabbed onto his hand as she passed, and began to lead him toward the stairway with him following behind her. "I already told Charlie," she said as she climbed upward. "And he's okay with it." Chris stopped halfway up the stairs, turning around to face the vampire. "But I won't stay if you're not okay with it," she said quickly. She swung their entwined hands together between them, her lower lip caught between her teeth. Chris really did want to stay with the vampire, and despite the fact that they had been intimate with one another the night before she still felt the need to ask him these things. It was polite, after all.

The young girl let go of his hand after their short talk and turned to race up the stairs. "I'll beat you up there!" She said playfully, arms and legs pumping as she climbed the rest of the way. She ran to the bathroom, and when she touched the bathroom sink she announced. "Haha, I win! What do I get for winning, huh?"

Her hand clasped his and she walked toward the stairwell, which had been long since cleaned of the shattered remnants of glass. Hayate's feet followed behind her steps as she lead the way, though her question and the subsequent pause of her feet upon the steps caused his eyebrows to draw together and his head to tilt to the side. "Of course," Hayate said lightly, though her question was not expected since she did not often ask it. On most nights she spent at his home, Chris usually stayed until it was too late to head back to her cottage and fell asleep upon his sofa or bed. It had been a while since she directly asked him if it was okay, and it surprised him, if only because he thought his acceptance was a given.

"You know you don't have to ask anymore," Hayate told her, a slight smile appearing on his lips. He was also surprised she told her brother, but it seemed as if Charlie still did not know Hayate's real age and considered him another teenager like them. The act he put on when they had met, as well as the glamour to make himself appear as but a teenager, must have been faultless.

After their short exchange, Chris released his hand and dashed up the rest of the stairs. Her declaration caused him to smile more noticeably, though he did not run after her and merely walked calmly the rest of the way to the open door of his bathroom. Hayate leaned against the door frame, crossing his arms. "I'm not sure," he said, the hint of a smirk quirking the corner of his mouth upward. "What do you think you deserve?"

His answer caused Chris's face to brighten up considerably. Her smile was her response to him, and she didn't say any more before she darted up the stairs. She was still a child in so many ways, but most notably in the fact that she still enjoyed these little games where she could race and be the winner. She and Charlie still played them even at Ms. Emily's house, or whenever there was something to race to. It was fun, and Chris probably wouldn't be stopping that behavior any time soon.

Charlie did consider Hayate a teenager, and Chris still didn't really see the vampire in terms of age. She knew that he was older, but the exact number escaped her. She didn't even care to know, and so she never asked. Charlie never asked either, and he trusted his sister's judgment in these matters.

The young human beamed at the vampire when he asked what she deserved. "I deserve a kiss," she said pointedly. "A long one, especially since the harpies hurt me earlier and no one kissed my owwies yet." She jutted her lower lip out in a pout, and it would have been believable were it not for the twinkle of playfulness in her eyes. She turned to face the mirror suddenly, pulling down the neck of her shirt to look at her shoulders. It was then she was reminded of the stolen necklace and she frowned.

"They took my necklace, too," she said. "The one my mom gave me before we went to Switzerland." Chris turned to look over her shoulder at Hayate. "They suck so bad. I hate them." She was pouting again, and she sighed softly as she reached into the cabinet for the ointment for her wounds.

The upward curl at the corners of his lips increased upon her answer, and he approached her from behind after she had turned around to look into the mirror. His hand lifted to rest on her waist as she pulled down the neck of her shirt to inspect her wounds. Before Hayate could answer her, he detected the frown in the mirror and remained quiet until she spoke.

They had taken her necklace, something important to Chris, and what was important to the young girl's happiness was important to him — if his mood allowed for such a feeling at all — and so, Hayate laid a careful hand upon the side of her upper arm near the shoulder to show it mattered to him this time. "I'll get it back for you," he said with a quiet tone.

Once she retrieved the ointment, Hayate removed his hand from her and walked towards the bedroom just across the hall. "Come to my bedroom," he said as he walked out. He opened the door, which had been replaced yesterday after he had broken the first one two days ago, and turned on the light. The flood of light into the room revealed the nicely made bed up against the middle of the far wall. There was no evidence left of their altercation anywhere in his home. Hayate sat down at the edge of the bed and waited for her to appear in the doorway. When she did, he patted the empty space next to him on the bed to indicate for her to sit beside him.

She followed him obediently, trotting along a few steps behind him as he opened the door for the both of them. Chris noticed the fixed door, but she didn't say anything about it out loud. Whoever replaced it did a good job, and she couldn't even tell that anything had happened here in the first place. She looked up at the vampire as he sat upon the bed - the very same bed where they had slept together only two nights ago. It brought many thoughts to Chris's mind, all of which involved them doing it again.

The girl didn't mention it though, not right away at least as she settled down onto the bed next to him. She figured that he would put the ointment on for her, and so she removed her shirt to make it easier. Of course, it got her thinking about sex again, and she actually bit down on her tongue to stop her from saying anything. Chris swallowed slowly, and reached her left hand to her right shoulder. "I don't want you to get hurt," she said as she turned to look at him. "I mean, I love my mom's necklace but..." The girl reached a hand up to his face, fingers touching his skin lightly. It was then she smiled a bit sheepishly, her head shaking from side to side. "Who am I kidding," she said with a grin. "You'd probably kick all their butts without breaking a sweat. If they have butts 'cause all I saw were fluffy bird bodies and stuff."

"I'll love you forever if you get it back for me," she said with a smile. It didn't bother the girl that she was wearing nothing but a bra in front of the vampire. Heck, he had seen her with nothing on so a bra wasn't really revealing anything he hadn't seen before. Chris flicked her head quickly to pull the hair off her right shoulder. She craned her neck to give him more room to put on the ointment for her.

As he began to smooth on the soothing medicine, Chris glanced at the vampire from the corners of her eyes. She smiled at him, and let out a slow breath. "Hayate..." she began quietly. "Can we have sex again?" She pulled her lower lip in between her teeth and blushed softly. Chris wasn't sure if it was okay for her to ask for such a thing. She was still very much unaware of the 'rules' between men and women, if such a thing existed. She didn't know if she was supposed to wait for it to happen again, or if he was the one in charge of when it did happen again. Her question left her feeling a little shy, but now that it was out there all she could do was wait for his answer.

Hayate’s mind was focused on putting the ointment upon her wounds, even as the girl took off her shirt and placed it aside on the bed. He removed the cap as she talked and looked up when Chris turned around to face him. The worries in her mind were little ones as it was unlikely the harpies could do any harm to him. Hayate almost said it out loud, but Chris halted his words as she brought it up herself. Her hand rose to his face, light fingers tracing over his skin. A faint smile appeared as he gazed back at her. Chris wore her affection on her sleeve, her affection for him, despite the events of only two days ago. The girl trusted him, even if he gave her no real reason to do so. Perhaps it was not the trust so much as she was crazy enough to try and match him — and loved it when she lost.

“I don’t have to worry about that,” he finally said, ushering her to turn around with his hand on her shoulder. With a smear of ointment on the pad of his thumb, he brushed it over the first scratch on her upper back. “I know how to deal with harpies,” Hayate said as he carefully tended to each scratch and puncture wound from their claws on her skin, “and I’ve taken care of larger things than them in the wild.”

Besides, harpies were only birds. They slept at night like any other bird, and a nest would hold the stolen trinket. They were scared of fire, and they were easy to kill if one had enough speed and precision. He could take care of them just fine tonight as Chris slept in bed, dreaming of whatever worlds were in her head. “You know I’ll get it back for you.”

Hayate glanced up, surprised by her question, though he did not show it on his face. It was not that he expected her not to ask, but that he was not expecting her to ask at this moment. He reached out and rubbed a small smear of ointment onto a scratch that rested upon her chin. "You should heal first," he said softly. If she meant tonight, tonight was not a good time. He had work to take care of the harpies as soon as he could get her to fall asleep. He did not even want her to know he was gone.

"I know you'll get it back," she said with a smile. "I can always count on you and Charlie." She sighed softly. There was a time when Logan would have been included on that list, but he had been acting so oddly around her lately that she began to doubt his sincerity toward her. It also spoke volumes to Chris that he didn't seem to like Hayate at all, and since she adored Hayate, Logan's dislike of the vampire felt as if he didn't like Chris either.

Hayate was so strong, and it was a definite factor in Chris's attraction to the vampire. That, and the mystery he held along with the excitement she felt when she was with him. So she held her heart on her sleeve, at least Hayate would always know where he stood with the young girl. She was very candid with her feelings, and a pout readily formed upon her lips when Hayate answered her question. It wasn't exactly what she wanted to hear, but she supposed she understood his reasoning. She probably wouldn't want to see herself naked either if she had scratches all over the place.

"Okay..." she said softly. "Well, put on a whole bunch so I can heal faster." A quirky little grin formed upon her lips, and when the vampire was done she moved to recline upon her tummy. She murmured contentedly, and rested her chin upon her forearm. She wasn't falling asleep yet, but she was definitely feeling the events of the day weighing down upon her body as she lay there.

So many times he forgot of her twin, the boy named Charlie. He was her twin and her brother, the two of them sharing the womb until birth. Even after all of their years together, Hayate gathered how they never left each other's side. There was a time when Hayate might have pretended to be younger in order to fool her friends, but the time had passed and Hayate thought it was best for him not to spend time around those close to her. He knew the closer they came to suspecting his real age, the closer he and Chris developed into public scandal.

It was better this way, a quiet affair between the two of them. Nobody had to know about it, even if there might have been those who suspected something was not normal between Chris and him. They had no reason to harass him over suspicions unconfirmed, and Hayate planned for it to stay that way.

His answer had not come about due to the scratches on her body. While Chris showed no outward signs of unhappiness, Hayate knew the sensitivity of women's emotions and self-appearances. He leaned towards her ear as his hand hovered beside her neck, fingers grazing the bare skin. Hayate kissed her right below the earlobe. Teeth gently bit down on the soft flesh, and he whispered in her ear. "It's good to wait sometimes," he spoke in a low voice. "You desire it more." It was an assurance that her scratches had nothing to do with it.

He smiled at her answer and finished applying the ointment, putting it aside afterwards. Sitting beside her lying form, Hayate placed both hands flat upon her back. His hands began to massage her muscles with languid but firm strokes, enough to lull her into sleep.

Charlie was a huge part of Chris's life. They would be connected until the day they died, sometimes even after it. Chris had read things about a 'missing twin' syndrome, where one twin still felt the presence of the other even if the other had already passed on. Chris knew that would be the case with her and Charlie; though they were fraternal twins, they were close and depended on each other. Without their parents around, they were all they had left in the world.

Chris was lucky to have found Hayate, though. She treasured him as the next closest person to her other than her twin. He was wonderful to her, even with the one violent incident. It probably would not even be the last with the vampire, but it was not something that Chris thought about. If it happened again then she would deal with it when it happened; there was no point in anticipating it.

The young girl shuddered with the kiss and playful tug on her earlobe. She couldn't stop the smile that curled upon her lips, his words reassuring her completely. She nodded her head, knowing that he was right. If she wanted it so much now, imagine just how excited she'd be if she waited another day or two, or even longer! It was an exciting thought, and she was sure she could do it.

His hands upon her back were indeed pulling her into a deep slumber. Her eyes began to close under the weight of the days events, and the relaxing feel of her lover's hands. Chris hadn't called Hayate her lover in her mind, but he had indeed taken on that role in her life. Her breath grew heavy under the firm strokes, and within moments she was asleep with a content smile upon her face.

When Chris's breathing evened out and grew shallow, Hayate slowed the movement of his hands until they came to an almost complete stop. The young girl had fallen asleep upon his bed. As he looked over her form, he allowed his hand to travel along the dip of her lower back. Pulling a sheet over her resting form, Hayate removed himself from his bedroom retrieved the items he would need tonight. The weather was chill and the Northwest mountains were far, so he dressed warm in a way that would not hinder his movement, and left the house to head for the stables.

He brought with him a sword in his possession to use against the harpies, a bottle of alcohol, an unused torch, and one of his lighters. The walk to the stables did not take too long, and he mounted one of the horses and rode it out towards the mountains. Tonight, he was going to draw blood in retaliation for the marks on Chris's body and he would retrieve the stolen necklace for her.
