Friday: November 2, 2007
Who: Elijah,Leon, and Mikhail
When: Early Afternoon
Where: In front of the crime scene / Faye and Kaiya's cottage
What: Contemplating life and death

It was a shame that Hallow's Eve had come and gone just like that. Elijah rather liked the holiday and it was the one festival that he had decided to attend. He didn't interact with anyone that night, but he did enjoy seeing all of the different costumes and all of the fun that people were having. But one day had passed since then and everyone was going back to the normal routine.

As normal as it could be considering the tragedy that occurred the night of Halloween. Death was a fun theme that laced every Halloween tradition, and yet the deaths of the two innocent fae on that very night made the holiday that much more tragic. Elijah stood in front of the crime scene, just beyond the yellow tape that had been used to close off the entire area. He was staring at the trees, and the ground around their house. The elemental caught the scent of blood, and he even saw some spots of it upon the earth.

He sighed out loud, wondering who could commit such a travesty against two young fae. Though Elijah did not know them personally, he took the news of their murder to heart. It saddened him to think that something so terrible could happen in a place that was supposed to be a haven. Elijah was no stranger to death, but that did not make it any easier to understand.

He raked his fingers through his hair before he shoved both of his hands into his pockets. The elemental stood there for several minutes, trying to recreate the events that took place that night. Of course, there were any number of scenarios that could have been correct, but no matter what he thought up each and every one of them was violent and sad in every way.

Leon heard of the news when he was in his designated area in the facility. He refused to believe the news until the Town Hall meeting. It was then where reality hit him. It hit hard in the face too. Why such innocent people? No one deserved to die, but he just kept imagining someone as sweet as Kaiya having her life taken away from her by some sociopath that was still at large. Not many things made Leon wish people would suffer severe consequences, but this was one of those moments where it differed.

He went to their former cottage where he wanted to pay his respects and he saw another gentleman there. He wasn’t surprised. It was a tragic event so many people were probably saying a few words then leaving.

Leon stood their quietly, trying not to think about the walk Kaiya and him had together when he closed his eyes to send what he guessed was a wishful prayer for them then looked towards the stranger.

“It’s pretty unbelievable isn’t it?”

People had been coming and going. Mikhail had come but had not yet gone. His arms were crossed over his broad chest, eyes down at the ground while barely seeing visitors in his peripheral vision. There were many tears being shed and prayers being sent. The Russian hadn't known either of these ladies, but as a gentleman at heart he felt mournful. Was it not bad enough to remember the murderous deaths of his comrades throughout life and the war? He remembered what it was like, more clearly now than at other times, being a young man in the 20s. All any of them had cared about was protecting their country and returning to their women, should they have any. Mikhail hadn't had a wife or a girlfriend at the time, but he knew many of the females his friends courted. It was a sad day when he was the bringer of bad news to the women to say their lovers had died.

What possessed people to murder two innocents like this, though? His brow furrowed as he mulled it over. They didn't seem like the kind of ladies that deserved any trouble, much less death. The only memory of them he had was from the night before, watching the costumes be presented. Mikhail had never met a fae so it was quite obvious to him when they were standing there on stage who they were. Now, connecting the faces and costumes, he shook his head.

"Yes," said Mikhail from where he stood a few feet from Leon. He found he had moved up to the tape and his hands were in his pockets. "I not understand." He mused. Usually there was not a reason for death unless there was a drive. Perhaps an intelligent animal? There were still creatures here, even in the haven, who were wild. Such a thing as a Naga existed. Maybe. . .

Mikhail felt of all the stories the snake-humans were far more dangerous than any one else he had ever met.

"Unbelievable is right," Elijah said to the man that had joined him at the murder scene. He didn't look over to the stranger for several minutes, his mind still going through all the possibilities for how this happened exactly. It wasn't that Elijah was a stranger to death; on the contrary, he had seen enough of it in his lifetime and witnessed Aubert's death up close and personal. Despite all of that, murder was the one thing that the elemental couldn't seem to grasp a firm understanding of.

Another man stepped forward, one who had been lingering in the background up until that moment. He, too, was just as confused as the rest of them. For all their experience combined, they couldn't figure out what could possess someone to take such innocent lives. His hands retreated into his pockets, a chill having overtaken him slightly.

"Everyone says death is a natural end to all things," he said while still staring straight ahead. "But I'll be damned if murder is." He let out an exasperated sigh, and then looked over to his companions. "Did you know them? The victims, I mean?" His question was to the both of them, even though he did not offer up his own answer just yet.

Leon paused for a moment before he could answer the question as to if he “knew” them. Did he? He knew that Kaiya was sweet and was troubled when he met her but he never got the chance to fully seek out who she was and it always brought up angered emotions towards himself and of course towards the culprit for taking the chance to get to know Kaiya for more than just that one time in the restaurant.

“I knew Kaiya. I mean, I only met her once but it was one of those fortunate events where I wish I could have gotten to know her better. She was one of the sweetest of people I have encountered. I don’t understand why this happened. I’m not one for questioning horrible events to this degree, so I guess I’m terribly thrown off guard as to what she or her friend could have possibly done to deserve this.”

He was a constant analyzer, so in his mind he was wondering who in the hell could possibly find it in them to harm Kaiya of Faye. It seemed a little unreal. “One intelligent something did this and they deserve to be punished for what they have done.” He couldn’t help but to wonder if they even cared about what they did, if there was even a drop of remorse in their body.

Indeed. How was murder natural? Mikhail sighed softly as he looked between the two men and then back at the scene before them. He felt very tired all of the sudden. He liked to think that everyone felt guilt for what they did. He was sure that the men who fought in the war in the 20s felt bad about it, just as he felt bad about all of the men he had killed. The man didn't wear tattoos inked in to his arms for no reason, after all. He didn't do a lot of things without a reason, actually. Like most people.

Did this murderer have a reason?

"I not know these ladies," he said. "But feel their death as if did." His hands were shoved in to his pockets, hanging there boredly as he stood there with the other men. "Should be killed for this," stated Mikhail. "Life for life." Usually the Lycan was not so crude and weighed options, but if the thing that killed Kaiya and Fae was the same as whatever killed that faun, it's time was up.

Elijah pulled some cigarettes from his pocket and placed one on his lips. His lighter came out a second later, and with a quick flick a flame emerged. He lifted it to the slim, white stick and lit it, inhaling deeply when the tip burned brightly. "It's a damn shame," he said with the cigarette pressed between his lips. He flicked his lighter close, and deposited it back into his pocket. He pulled the cigarette from his mouth and let it hang loosely at his side. Elijah wasn't much of a smoker, but he did indulge it in occasionally.

He blew out a long trail of smoke, and sighed. "Elijah Clément," he said to the two men with a nod of his head. It was an informal introduction, but not unfriendly in any way. He lifted the cigarette to his lips again, inhaling deeply and enjoying the smell of the smoke that rose in the air. "I wouldn't mind killing the bastard who did this," he said idly. "But does that make me just as bad as the man who killed the fae? Or worse since technically it's premeditation now that I've voiced it out loud."

“It depends.” Leon stated before looking at Elijah. “What would your intent be? Would it be to satisfy your own rage?” He looked back towards the grass, somewhat a bland shade of green. Of course, the question or the following statements to come could be directed towards Mikhail as well.

“Or while you were killing them would you think of the two women murdered? Would you regret what you did afterwards? Think about it from time to time? Still think of the victims? Of course with passion in it or not, it’s still wrong. But it just depends what you put into your act of murder. If it’s mostly just to satisfy your own emotions, it makes you seem just as bad as the lowlife. But if you believe you’re feeling a sense of a quick trial by a justice far more fair than rotting in the dungeon, I’d name you more as a vigilante right now. But no matter what, you’d never reach as low as the man who killed these two women.”

The Therianthrope didn’t mean to talk so much into it, but he sometimes thought about what he would do if he found out who did this. Certainly it would be hard just to sit down and have a friendly chat with the man (or for all he knew woman). Of course, Leon dealt with murderers before, but they weren’t still on the loose.

The werewolf beside these men couldn't remember the last time he had smoked a cigarette, or anything for that matter. Ten, twenty years ago? Longer? He knew he had smoked like all of the other men on Project 26, but after leaving the Navy he quit. The only time he ever picked up a cigarette was when he was extremely stressed; Mikhail liked to think he dealt well with stress and didn't need an addiction to fix it.

Leon brought up a good point, however. Would they be killing in revenge or because they had some sick need to justify the deaths of these women? Would they be killing because they were angry, or killing because it was their "duty?" How did executioners get away with it? Did they like having all of that blood on their hands, knowing they had strapped a man in to a chair or, quite long ago, chopped someone's head clear off? The Lycan didn't want to really think about it.

"Mikhail Dmitriv," he said back at Elijah and toward Leon, passing his hand in a brief wave.

"I always feel guilty," stated the man as his hands found their ways in to his leather jacket pockets. He hung back on his heels, standing straight with his head bowed toward the ground. "Death penalty is reasonable for a murderer, hn, but is also quick way out. Maybe he want die, if feel bad." The man shrugged and sighed softly. "For those We kill on moon, we no want to, you cannot control attacks at young age. Impossible. But this. . .this not accident." Secretly in the dark of the day Mikhail glanced at his tattooed arms, marked in with yellow stars for those who had died in the war. Some, though he would never say, were of the men he had killed on his more ferocious and less controlling nights.

He had to live with that pain every day, just as every other man and woman who took a life accidentally did. It was not an easy conscience to live with.

Elijah listened to Leon's speech, chuckling a bit under his breath. "Let me guess, you're a shrink," he said in Leon's direction. He didn't have anything against psychiatrists or psychologists, but the way the guy just rattled off made him sound like one. If he wasn't one, then he needed to be. "You make good points, though. What if I said I'd kill him to stop this from happening again? That the haven would be safer without someone like that around?"

He craned his neck to the two men, eyebrows raised slightly to show that he was interested in their answer. Even after all the years he had been alive, he still found humans interesting. Their take on life, and death, was fascinating since it differed from person-to-person. So the big one was a lycanthrope, and judging by the accent he was Russian. "No, this wasn't an accident, which means that whomever did this will probably do it again. And it means they don't feel guilt over it in the least."

He hadn't taken another drag off the cigarette for a while, content to let the smoke rise into the air. The elemental wasn't addicted to smoking, but he did like the way the smoke smelled and in an odd way it was relaxing when it filled his lungs. Besides, it wasn't like he was going to die from the stuff. He was just growing old, but he wasn't completely human.

Leon rolled his eyes at the word shrink. “Actually the word shrink is more for psychiatrist. I’m a Psychologist. So I guess I am half of a shrink. But it kind of creeps me out every time I am called a shrink because it’s also used for people who cut off people’s heads and preserves them. “ He stated factually. He looked into it when a guy threatened him to show what a true shrink really was like. The Therianthrope didn’t get it at the time, but when he did he got himself a nice restraining order against the man.

When Elijah went back to killing the criminal, he turned towards him again and shrugged up his shoulders. “You have a right to do as you please. Believe me, candidly, I would love to see whoever did this dead. But you have to think about the consequences. Are you willing to pay for you deed because of this man? Because justice has to be served, something will happen to you. That’s the downside of it all.”

He hated the fact that he would have liked to see the guy die. It made him feel like a bad person. “But if you killed him. I can’t say I wouldn’t give you a medal for it. Or count anything against you.”

Elijah liked Leon despite the sarcastic tone of his 'shrink' comment earlier. He listened to Leon talk about the consequences of actions despite all of the good intentions you might have had while performing them. It was all true, of course, and Elijah had experienced it more than once in his life. He had seen it around him, too. He remembered when he was younger, a newly born elemental, how fascinated he was with the whole idea of cause and effect. When he had the chance he would try various things to see the consequences of his actions. Aubert would scold him sometimes; others, he would just laugh.

"In the end, I think that all men think about the act of killing at one time or another, or imagine someone's death. Sometimes it's just a natural reaction to anger or fear or hate. It pops into our brains out of nowhere. An impulse. A guy swerves in front of you in traffic and you think, 'fucker! I hope you get into a car accident!'. Or maybe you catch someone kissing on your girlfriend, and you think 'I could kill that asshole.' Or in a case like this where you think 'I could kill the guy who did this.'" He paused a little, bringing the cigarette to his lips. He inhaled once more before he dropped the white stick to the ground, crushing it underfoot. "The difference though lies in whether or not we act on those thoughts and impulses. That's what separates us from whomever did this. There's no crime in thinking about those things, but there is when we act upon them."

He sighed a little, saying a little prayer under his breath before he turned to Leon. "It was nice meeting you," he said with a small smile. "Hopefully we'll run into each other again." With that Elijah turned on his heel and walked away from the scene of the crime, his hand held in the air to say goodbye to the man he had been talking with.
