Who: Marit and Jia
When: Roughly around 1pm
Where: The Sweets Shop in Helicharis
What: Marit spends a good portion of Halloween serving up treats

The mermaid's understanding and exposure to the festival known as Halloween had been limited. It is a celebration heavily commercialized in the United States of America and throughly enjoyed by the millions. But in many countries of Europe, Halloween was not a time to act silly and gorge oneself on candy and alcohol. In fact, some people took All Hallow's Eve and Halloween to be very serious times, not for the foolish lest something awful happen. Marit had spoken with a handful of people and decided that this great celebration was not something she would want to miss.

She had taken the time to decide on a costume, something simply but still fun. As Halloween was a big deal to Americans, Marit went as a cowgirl and was able to borrow items to complete it. She found a pink-checkered blouse, which she buttoned down to just above her belly button and tied the ends together in a stylish knot. A (rather short) denim skirt made her costume a little leggier than she had intended but the cowgirl boots were surprisingly comfortable. A pink ribbon was tied around the straw hat, visible above the broad brim, and Marit also tied little ribbons at the bottoms of her braided pigtails. Everyone was allowed and encouraged to wear their costumes to the sweets shop that morning.

What Marit had neglected to discover ahead of time was the real significance of candy's role in most people's Halloween festivities. The sweets shop was packed with parents and children, most in little home-made costumes, all waiting though not necessarily with patience for their turn to get the sweets they should like. Eventually, she got pulled into the kitchen and had to help make an assortment of little chocolates. Ah, it was messy work, but she did enjoy watching the children get little pieces of candy as not to spoil their supper or the festivities later on.

This was a pattern that Marit would happily fall into, working at the sweets shop as often as they might need her. She liked seeing the children; their care-free nature could be caught and passed along. One child seemed to be awfully glum and starting at a nearly empty display case of little candies. If Marit were a mother, she would definitely have to watch for how easily her children could win her over with sad little expressions and pouts. She picked a colorful lollipop out of a jar and slipped out from behind the counter, smiling warmly as she handed it off to the little girl dressed as an angel. The child's eyes lit up and she quickly disappeared out the door.

It was the little things in the day that were the most rewarding. Turning to another in the shop, she asked kindly, "May I help you with something today?"

Jia was feeling especially generous on Halloween. When kids strolled in with their cute costumes, she couldn’t help but to give them small teddy bears wrapped up with small treats. She guessed the lollipops and chocolates were compliments of the sweets shop. She was starting to want to give into her sweet tooth when she saw kids indulging themselves with candies before they got ready for the big event later that night.

She wasn’t alone this day and she politely asked if she could venture through the marketplace to find the sweets shop before she got ready for Halloween. She was so delighted that her sister decided to dress in a similar outfit like she did. When she was steps away from the shop, she felt her spirits rise.

The psychometric walked in carefully and made sure that she didn’t run into any of the children. She was quite impressed with all of the candies propped about the shop. If only she knew what she wanted! It was just then Jia was asked if she could be assisted with anything. “Hm..is there anything you might suggest?” She was willing to try anything.

"That depends on what you're in the mood for, I suppose," Marit began thoughtfully and looked down between the pair of them to see another child go running about. For those that were from America, she thought it must be nice for them to have something of normalcy in their lives after everything that had occured in the near six-months that they had been here. And for the other children, well, was it possible that a child would not like a holiday filled with candies?

There was a table of jars, each with candies of a different color to the left. Hard gumballs, gobstoppers, gumdrops, and a variety in lollipops of shape and size. Behind Marit, visible as she turned, was a case filled with a variety of cakes and cookies. There were the sugary treats, the sweet treats, and a few sour delights, too.

"We've just made a fresh batch of chocolate-dipped strawberries, pretzels, and blueberries, if you might like something sweet and very flavorful. The strawberries are a personal favorite," she mused sweetly and pointed out which were what. "The lollipops are especially good, too, today. Or the little gumdrops. It's very easy to have too many." Marit folded her hands in front of her a moment, looking over the cases again.

After thinking about if for a moment, Jia decided that the chocolate dipped chocolates sounded wonderful. She ate them all the time back home and she couldn’t resist turning back to them here in the sanctuary. “I would love to try the chocolate dipped strawberries. “ She said softly. But then she looked the woman over. She was so beautiful. Jia didn’t have a blonde woman in her family and when she lived with her sister, they both were dark haired. Daiyu sometimes died her hair blonde but of course it didn’t look so flattering like it did on this woman.

“I..I don’t think we have met before. My name is Jia. I work at the Gift Shop.” It was always good to acquaint yourself with new people. But Jia couldn’t believe she hadn’t met this woman before. She had very striking features. Hard not to notice.

“Today will be very exciting I think.”

Marit turned and took the few short steps around to the back of the display case when the girl had come to a possible decision. "Chocolate-dipped fruits are such delicious little treats," she mused and pulled a small piece of wax-paper from a box to pick up one of the strawberries. The girl introduced herself and the woman smiled in return before extending Jia the same courtesy.

"My name's Marit. I don't believe we have met before, Jia, but I'm glad we have." She had never gone into the Gift Shop, not that she could exactly recall. Perhaps once when she had first explored the town but Marit felt as though she would have remembered Jia. A small strawberry was lifted from the case and handed over the counter. "I agree. Have you celebrated Halloween before?"

Jia laughed towards Marit, but not in an insulting way. The woman was very sweet along with beautiful. “Of course! I have celebrated Halloween since I was a child. Are you from a place where you do not celebrate Halloween often?” She sensed there was a slight accent in her voice, but she was unsure of where she was from.

“I know that some places do not consider Halloween a holiday. In the United States it is a huge event, but in Europe I know that not all countries recognize it. It’s great though that they are keeping it open to everyone here.”

She rest carefully against the counter after she set the case in her hands. The aroma of the candy was seeping through the covering and was almost making her stomach rumble. But she would be sure to wait for Daiyu and share the treats with her sister.
