Who: Theora and Adam
When: Late Afternoon
Where: The Ancient Elven Tree
What: Last minute preparations for the festival

With the Hallow's Eve festival one day away, everyone who had volunteered to help found themselves putting on the finishing touches to the décor. Pumpkin shaped lanterns were strung between wooden poles that surrounded the Ancient Elven Tree, as were garlands of orange, yellow and red leaves. There were group of elves who were busy carving jack-o-laterns, while a group of fae were stringing together flowers for crowns. A group of dryads were urging the trees around them to deposit more of their leaves on the ground, and using their powers change them into brilliant colors.

"Priestess!" A small fae fluttered up to the Elven maiden, her hands holding a half-finished wreath. "I need more Canterbury Bells and Bunny Tail Grass!"

Theora turned to the young fae, taking the unfinished wreath into her hand. "Well this is a perfectly good crown as it is. Do you really need more flowers for it?"

The fae's face turned somber, and her wings drooped a little. It was very obvious that she wanted the flowers to finish her wreath, and Theora just did not have the heart to say no. She sighed a little though there was a very clear smile upon her face. The priestess reached out a hand, her fingers underneath the fae's chin to lift it upward. She smiled at the young fae. "I will gather some for you, but you must be patient since I must travel back to the temple in town."

The small fae beamed brightly, and hugged the priestess around her neck. "Thank you!" She squeaked before she flew away with her wreath.

Theora took a deep breath and prepared for the walk back to the temple. She spotted Adam helping with some of the decorations by the Ancient Elven Tree, and she walked over toward the elemental. He had offered his help when the preparations first began, and while he outwardly looked happy Theora sensed some turmoil coming from deep within him. "Adam!" She called out to him, her hand waving in the air. "Would you mind escorting me to the temple? We have not had a chance to spend time with one another, and I would very much like your company as we travel."

Adam helped a few of the fae as they lifted garlands in order to wrap them around the Ancient Elven Tree. As they flew up to place one of them in the leaves, Adam held the end of it and made sure it didn't tangle with another long garland strewn out on the ground. He heard his name being called by a familiar voice, none other than the priestess herself, and smiled pleasantly in her direction. Even if his spirits were not entirely at rest, it was impossible not to be anything but happy around the priestess. She was like illumination in the darkness, the persistence of hope in corporeal form. There were many ways to describe Theora in Adam’s head, and all of them would have sounded cheesy if spoken out loud. They sounded just right in his head.

He called over another to unfold the garland for the faes and hurried off towards Theora. Dropping what he was doing and joining her side was Adam’s way of saying ‘yes’ without having to speak the actual word. He slipped his hands into the pockets of his pants as he walked beside her. “What do you need to retrieve from the temple?” he asked. He realized then that he had never called her by her name, thinking her his superior and yet not knowing what title to give her.

A little smile crossed over his lips. “We haven’t spent much time together lately. I think that might be my fault. I haven’t been interacting with people very much. I’ve been taking time for myself instead.” A slight frown erased the smile from his face and settled in its place. “I’m not sure if I’ll come to the festival and parade tomorrow. I think I would only bring down the cheery attitudes of everyone around me.” He lit up suddenly, turning to look at Theora. “But I do enjoy helping out with the decorations and setting up the last things for the party.” He didn’t want Theora to think that he wasn’t enjoying this or that he would rather be doing something else entirely. It wasn’t an obligation; he did want to help.

Adam was important to Theora in a way that no one else was. While the priestess tried to be fair with everyone around her, she couldn't help but feel a certain closeness to a particular few. Adam was one of those few. She was glad when he accepted her invitation and though his hands were in his pockets she slipped her arm through the crook of his elbow and walked alongside him. "One of the fae needs more flowers for her garland," Theora answered with a slight chuckle. "The meditation garden at the temple should still have some." Theora smiled at Adam, content to be spending some time with him.

His next words caused the priestess to fill with worry though she did not express it immediately. She listened to his words, her brow furrowing ever so slightly. When he was done talking the priestess squeezed his arm gently in reassurance. "Time for oneself is often necessary," she said in a soft voice. She turned her head to smile at him. "It allows us to reflect, and grow. It is not a bad thing, but I can understand how you might believe it to be." There were a few moments of silence as they walked down the gravel path. A chill filled the air though the priestess barely noticed it.

"However, it is important to remember that no person is an island. There are certain trials and tribulations that are easier to overcome with a friend by your side." Another smile curled upon Theora's lips. She worried about Adam, and she sensed that he was going through some changes. What they were exactly she did not know, but she could sense that they were stirring up strong emotions within the elemental. "You need not come to the festivities tomorrow night," she said. "But I cannot let you be alone, either. We will spend tomorrow night together at my residence. It will be nice and quiet with everyone at the festival."

Theora was also one of the few people Adam considered close to him, and there weren’t very many among those numbers. He had his family, first and foremost, but he had never tried much for making friends beyond them. Theora was one of the rare friends he did have outside of his family. They had a sort of kinship with each other, an understanding that transcended normal boundaries of friendship. Maybe it was their mutual connection to nature which made them so alike. He was born of it, and she was both a friend and master of it. It might have explained the power she had to get through to him when others couldn’t do it. Theora knew how to speak to him, how to convey her thoughts, without twisting her words or meanings in any way. It was hard for humans to do that.

Her arm around his didn’t bother Adam. In fact, it wasn’t like him to think anything of it. It was a comforting gesture, and touch was important when in corporeal bodies. Adam had learned this of having a human form early on in his life. At her next words, Adam glanced down at the ground. After a few moments of silence, Adam finally spoke. “I don’t think it’s bad,” he said softly. “Just lonely, and sometimes a little scary. I am not sure of everything I’m feeling. I just feel . . . confused.”

He looked up at Theora, smiling kindly at her for her nice words. He hadn’t thought to talk to her about it. He didn’t want to be a burden to anyone. Adam also wanted to try and figure out things on his own. He hated feeling like he couldn’t do anything by himself, but maybe that was the life of an elemental — constantly bound to something or someone other than themselves. “I didn’t want to bother you,” Adam said, his gaze falling back down to the road. He was like a little child in many ways, even after so many years.

He was surprised at her offer, having to meet her eyes once more. Adam shook his head. “No, you have to go to the festival. It wouldn’t be right if I held you back from going. It’s important for you to go. You’re the High Priestess.”

Theora was nothing if not truthful. She had seen many human relationships fall apart because of the lack of truth between the partners. It was in a priestess's nature to always speak the truth in a way that could be understood by all. She never twisted her words to mean anything else, so a person could always rely on the fact that Theora's words were true.

She sighed softly at Adam's words, not out of a lack of patience, but rather an understanding of what he was saying. "You must remember that you are never alone, Adam. You have all of nature to keep you company. You have the trees, the land, and all of the animals that live within them. Loneliness is not something that people have, but rather it is something that people allow themselves to feel. If you think about it, no one is ever really alone. Not if you hold those dearest to you in your heart."

The priestess smiled at the elemental, hoping that he understood what she was trying to explain. She had so much knowledge and wisdom to share that she often found it hard to restrict herself to just one thought at a time. If only her mind were an open book, then a person could just come along and glean what information they wanted from her.

"You are never a bother, Adam," she said honestly. "I enjoy your company immensely, and I would have you come and talk to me about anything you are feeling rather than be alone. And scared." She stopped and slipped her arm free from Adams. Her hands moved to his shoulders so that she could look him in the eyes. "You must not be afraid to feel. Fear would only lock away your potential to grow as a person. And you need not fear around me, for I will protect you and guide you through your difficult times." She leaned in and placed a chaste kiss to his cheek, one that would hopefully calm the elemental down and make him feel at peace.

"And I will not take no for an answer," she said with a grin. "They do not need me at the festival, and I would much rather spend my time with you. The festival is not as important as you are, Adam." Theora resumed her position alongside Adam with her arm curled around his, continuing their walk toward the temple and the meditation garden.

Theora was correct, of course. Adam found himself sighing aloud as he heard her all too true words being spoken out loud. It wasn't an exasperated sigh aimed at her; it was Adam's own frustrations at himself expressed outwardly. He only felt lonely because he allowed himself to be and not because he was truly alone. If he had been happy and talking to no one, Adam would have felt as if all the world were watching him and smiling with him, every tree and every flower. As it was, though, he felt lonely and so he made himself feel alone as if no tree or flower were even listening to him.

Their walk halted in its steps as Theora came to stop once she removed her arm from his. Adam's feet ended their stroll, and he turned to face her as her hands placed themselves upon his shoulders. Every time she spoke, Theora was always right. He had been acting foolish lately, and he felt bad as the realization came to him. Adam's lips drew tight together to keep them from trembling. Theora kissed his cheek, and it compelled Adam to hug the priestess.

His arms wound around her shoulders as he drew her into his embrace. "I'm sorry," Adam said. "I have been acting very childish lately." He felt as if he had been acting much below his age, though Theora's words comforted him and made him realize the truth at the same time. It was best for him not to be ignorant. Eventually, he released his hold on the priestess and took a step back. Adam brushed a finger against his nose, hoping the itch was unrelated to the slight itch around his eyes.

"I would like that," he told her, managing a smile at Theora. Her arm linked once more with his arm, and Adam continued to walk with the priestess at his side.

Theora wrapped her arms around Adam's body. The action brought a smile to the priestess's face, and she reached a hand up to stroke the back of the elemental's head. Her fingers combed through his hair slowly, and she shushed his words gently. "No, no," she said softly. "You have not been acting like a child. You have been acting like yourself, and that is not incorrect at all. You must not blame yourself for your reactions."

She looked into his eyes when he pulled away, and she reached up her hand to cup his cheek. "We are all constantly growing and learning," she said. "You must never think that your reactions are childish for they are not. There are no right or wrong reactions to anything, only different ones."

Theora smiled as they linked arms. "Then it is settled. I shall prepare for our night together then." The pair continued toward the temple all the while making plans for their 'slumber party'. It would be an enjoyable experience indeed, and the priestess was sure it was something they both needed.
