Who: Adam and Shawn
When: 10:00 PM
Where: The shore near the water bungalows.
What: Elemental meets elemental.

Adam was more impervious to cold weather than most, having lived nearly all of his life in Alaska. Fall of the Macedonian region was nothing by comparison, and his jeans and comfortable jacket were enough for the elemental. He didn't need too much. Staring forward into the night, Adam watched the light waves rock against the lake shore not too far away from the edge of his feet. He was sitting on dry sand, of course. The last thing he needed at this moment was to be sitting in water.

With his forearms on his bent-up knees and hands held out, Adam was also in the middle of summoning the nearby plant life to grow out towards the water. The small branches of bushes continued to expand, new leaves sprouting and new roots taking formation along the white sand. Vines curled out of the green expanses behind Adam and slithered over the shore, all of it growing towards the water. It moved like it had a mind of its own, but all of the work was thanks to Adam.

The growth passed a fair area of the shore around him, a couple of yards at least. He wasn't trying to do anything in particular. He just wanted to see the limbs reach the tip of the lake. He could hear them talking, whispering, joyful at the journey he was giving them. They couldn't move like this on their own, and they had never been this far out. A distance traveled was a distance traveled to a plant, and everything seemed wondrous to them.

He was unaware of anyone else around the shore. Adam's focus was solely on the dark water ahead and the plants passing by his form now, stretching out towards the lake. He'd been spending the last few nights outside, buried in the ground in a shapeless form. It hadn't been as comfortable as his bed as home, but he wasn't going home just yet.

A long day. It had been such a long day. Ever since they had come to this island, there had been so many people. So many individuals who were interested in one part of their life or another, or who wished to talk to be friendly, or something of the sort. Shawn missed the days in Los Angeles, when it had only been him and Leo. The days that nobody had cared about what you did, who you were, or where you were going. Meeting people was... tiring.

Shawn had been putting off the question he had been asking himself all day, throwing it into the back of his mind. Sydni, that werewolf woman, had brought up his humanity. It plagued him now, a tireless question that Shawn refused to answer. As a result, he was full of a kind of nervous energy, a need to move taking over his very existence. This was a rare, if almost new feeling in him, yet he willingly obeyed it. This was how Shawn found himself flying over the lake at speeds faster than cars had once been. Cocooned in warm air from cold that he was indifferent too, feeling only cool droplets of water against his skin when he got too close to the water's surface. It was then that he noticed something.... interesting.

Not much interested Shawn. To warrant his attention one either needed to be a threat, or something absolutely necessary for survival. There were few exceptions. This however, this was one of them. There was a man sitting at the beach, plants growing like fire around him. Years of research and study told him, screamed to him in fact, that this might be another elemental. Earth elementals had the power to control plant life, he knew that quite well.

He approached slowly, using the winds to bring a scent of the man to him. Definitely not human, he concluded. He flew straight at the man from the side, not caring whether or not he was spotted, and stopped short to sit a few feet away in the sand himself.

"Hello" He said, attempting to smile, and using the little manners he could remember at this point. "You are an elemental?" It was half a question, half a statement. Proper mannerisms might expect one to wait, make small talk, and then ask such a thing, but Shawn had never been taught them. He was blunt and to the point, efficient with his time and dieing to have his answer.

Normally, Adam wasn't surprised by much out of the ordinary. It was the ordinary things that sometimes confused the elemental, while extraordinary things appeared as normal to him. This was one time out of the few where witnessing someone flying through the air actually surprised Adam and caught him off-guard. His hands suddenly dropped to the sand, the growth of the plant life settling into place against the beach and halting in its move towards the water. He stared at the man who had just landed himself against the sand and took a seat not too far away. Who was this man?

Adam blinked at the young man, startled but not put off by the intrusion. It wasn't like him to be put off by anything. "Hello," he echoed back. Proper human mannerisms weren't entirely there for Adam in the same way they weren't entirely there for the other elemental, and so he saw nothing rude about being asked such a question so soon. "Yes, I'm an elemental," Adam answered with a short nod of his head. His hair fell somewhat into his face, but he didn't bother to sweep it away. It had gotten kind of long lately, and he hadn't bothered to have some of the length cut off.

"You're an elemental, too," Adam said just a moment later, watching the other man closely. He wasn't suspicious, merely curious. "You must be an air elemental. Only an air elemental can fly," he added. It was a strange thought to note, but Adam realized he had never really known another elemental personally before. He'd seen a few around, obviously, though very few. He never actually had a chance to talk to any of them before this moment.

Shawn looked at the now still plants in disappointment. He had been a bit eager to watch them grow so quickly, to observe another elemental's behavior when it was alone. He said nothing though.

Shawn sat beaming at the man now, giving him a smile so intense it had only really been seen by Leo. "You keep your hair long too." He observed, having gotten past the whole 'you're an elemental' part of the conversation rather quickly. "Leo used to have it long. I always wondered how he kept it out of his eyes so well." This was a truly unrestricted Shawn, one that did not worry about human pleasantries or threats. This was the inquisitive and curious Shawn that let every stray thought pop out of his mouth. "Oh, I'm Shawn Dorian." He interjected, as if only having just remembered that introductions were necessary. He offered no hand to shake, he was not aware that it was custom to do so.

Shawn himself had never seen an elemental that had not been commanded to shut up and serve those around him. While it was true, he had once been one of them, the interactions he had with them did not count in any way for him. He was excited to the point of idiocy now, so eager to talk to this earth elemental that he himself sounded like a bit of a moron. This was indeed a rare event, and had only happened to him once before in his lifetime. "How far can you make the plants grow?" He finally asked after a fourth glance at the vines. Could he wrap someone up in plants? Leo had always been dieing to know that, and now it seemed Shawn was too.

Adam suddenly looked up at his own hair from the upper corner of his eyes. His hair was kind of long, though he never really thought about it. He only ever received a haircut once every six or so months, letting it grow out the rest of the time. Haircuts weren't very important to Adam, and he tended to not think about that sort of thing. He nodded his head, but then his curiosity was piqued. "Who's Leo?" Adam asked, also obviously over the whole 'you're an elemental' part of the conversation as well.

"I'm Adam Alexie," he introduced himself, smiling at Shawn. He didn't offer his hand either, not because he didn't know about that sort of human pleasantry but because if the other man didn't offer his hand to shake, then maybe he didn't want to shake hands. Adam was okay with that. "It's nice to meet you, Shawn," he added, not thinking it was out of place to at least say some of the common pleasantries. After all, it was rather nice to meet another elemental.

Adam looked down at the plants, realizing he had been making them grow up until Shawn showed up beside him. "Oh, I can make them grow pretty far," he said, holding his hands up slightly from the sand and further causing the plants to twist and turn as they grew out towards the water once again. "They could go deep into the water, but I don't think it's good to do that to them. I just wanted to see them reach the shore." Adam glanced over at Shawn, appearing a bit sheepish. "I'm not sure why."

Haircuts were not of much importance to Shawn either. During the beginning of his life Julius had always required him to maintain short hair, but now he was free to do with it what he pleased. Perhaps he would begin growing it out. "Leo is my baby brother." He said smiling, mostly because he imagined the faces the teenager would make at being called a 'baby' brother. "He's... my alchemist." Shawn knew that it would be simple for Adam to understand that alchemist did not mean master, although the man might have been confused as to why his was a 'baby brother' instead of a full grown man.

"It is nice to meet you too Adam." Shawn gave in reply. He would not have thought to say that if Adam had not said it first, but realized responding in the way he had would be the norm. Neither the exchanging of pleasantries nor the art of small talk were skills the Shawn had mastered. It had been only recently that he had begun such study.

He was fascinated by the sudden movement of the plants again, absorbed in interest as they twisted and turned with new growth. The sheepishness in Adam's voice made Shawn curious, and he strove to come up with an answer to the other man's desires. "The same reason I watch the wind." It was an incomplete answer, and one that would probably not make sense to those other than himself, but it seemed fitting.

Adam was most definitely confused about why Shawn would call his alchemist a baby brother. Not being one who was very good with hiding his true feelings, the puzzlement shown through on his face. "How is your alchemist younger than you?" Adam inquired. If Shawn had looked much older, then perhaps Adam could have understood the other elemental's wording, but Shawn didn't look very old. He'd never heard of any case where the alchemist was younger than the elemental, and any tale Shawn had to tell would receive full attention from Adam. Besides, he liked hearing about other people's lives — and not at all in a strange, gossipy way. Adam just liked stories, especially true ones.

Having lived long under the care of humans and being treated as family, Adam tended to display a lot of the same things as humans, even if he didn't think like one. Everything else he did was reminiscent of human traits. He didn't really think of himself as different and yet he did. It was all very complicated sometimes.

Even if Shawn's answer was short, it was clear and it made sense. Adam smiled slightly, turning his head once more to watch the plants grow as well. Some of the vines twisted upward instead of out, curling around in the air around nothing in particular. "I guess it's natural for us," Adam said, "if that's where we came from." A soft sigh escaped him. "I don't really remember, though. Anything from before." He glanced over at Shawn. "Do you?"

"Technically, I was created a year after he was born. So he is a year older." He stated unnecessarily. Even if he was created later, Shawn's brain had come fully developed, a blank yet adult mind, whereas Leo's had needed time to develop. Therefore, he would always be the older brother. "Leo's great-grandfather bound me to himself originally." He began, barely able to keep the disgust out of his voice. He did not wish to resent Julius, one of the few people that Leo greatly admired, but it was only natural after what he had been through. "His... experiments involved elemental binding and limitations of bondage. " He could have gone into great detail, explaining the processes step by step and include the reasoning behind them, but he would give a short and simple answer unless prompted to do otherwise. "Once Leo turned sixteen, the bond was turned over to him." It felt odd addressing his "bondage", especially when it came to Leo. Not wanting the other elemental to assume he had been forced to switch over, he gave him a quick smile.

At this point, Shawn was running his hands through his short hair a few times a minute. He did not interact enough with humans to display normal tendencies, but had subconsciously adopted most of Leo's habits instead. Generally, Shawn thought of himself as different from humans, they seemed to be some complex race that was to be studied and learned from, observed and imitated. Leo, of course, was the exception. He had always simply been Leo to the elemental. He was glad to meet Adam, a second exception to a world of faceless humans.

Shawn was a bit jarred by Adam's question, as it was something he normally kept out of his thoughts. In truth, all he remembered was...freedom. The rest was vague and unimportant, as if shaded in gray and clouded by haze. "Not much, although a little bit." He admitted. "I think that how it was before can't really be kept in human memories." It was a question that Leo had asked numerous times in his childhood, filled with the curiosity of youth. Shawn had never answered it, and eventually Leo had just stopped asking. It felt a bit like betrayal now, to tell someone who was essentially a stranger, yet keep it from his brother.

"So, where is your alchemist?" Shawn asked, a little eager to change the subject. It would be good for Leo to know another alchemist. Shawn alone knew how much the teenager wished to continue his training, discussing and conferring with others. Yet, the elemental was afraid of Adam's alchemist as well. What if he was cruel, like Julius's colleagues had been? Did he treat Adam badly? It was suddenly a question that Shawn needed answering, and his lack of social skills kept him from being shy about it. "He does not treat you badly, does he?" While others might have looked away shyly, Shawn observed the other man with a calculated interest. He was too ignorant to be embarrassed, and it was his turn for a story now.

"I've never heard of that before," Adam said, and while Shawn's voice reflected disgust as he spoke of Julius, Adam's voice held a sort of wonder at hearing of this idea. The wonder only lasted momentarily until he realized Shawn was not at peace with the memories. Something wasn't right, but Adam didn't feel it was his place to barge in on Shawn's past life with his alchemist. However, it was impossible to completely ignore it. "You don't sound very happy about him," Adam commented carefully, hoping he would not be crossing a line by saying this. "Your alchemist," he added. Leo was not really Shawn's alchemist, but a vessel to which Shawn could hold onto to prolong his own life in this form. Without an alchemist, he would either be gone or transformed into a mage. A human. Well, a metahuman, to be precise.

"Why did he turn the bond over to a sixteen-year-old?" Adam inquired further, wondering why an alchemist would search for a way to bind his elemental to another. "Was he tired?" By that, Adam meant tired of life and living, as he knew some humans grew wary of a prolonged existence. Others wanted to live forever, but maybe more people realized forever wasn't everything it was cracked up to be sooner rather than later. He had never heard of an alchemist living too long before. Despite carmot, many of them eventually were overcome with wariness and gave up on life. At least, the stories he heard followed such a route.

Adam nodded his head at Leo's answer of their lives before. His recollections were the same, mere shadows more than anything. There weren't any defining shapes to be made out of them. "I think that's true," he agreed. A human mind probably wasn't suitable for holding those sorts of memories. Humans relied so strongly on sight and other senses; things elementals weren't gifted with in their lives before.

"Probably at home, sleeping," Adam said off-handedly, not really wanting to think of Constance at this moment. Their falling out had occurred so recently; it was still fresh in Adam's mind, a sore that ached if he messed with it. "She," he said a moment later, looking over at Shawn. "My alchemist is a she. Constance." Adam looked out at the plants as they reached the shore. They slowed, stopped, poking slowly at the water as if to test it. He let out a soft sigh from his lungs. "She has never been cruel to me. She's always been like . . . like a mother to me." The soft quality of his voice turned a little hard, though. "But I am not speaking to her right now. We had a fight, and I'm mad at her."

It wasn't like Adam to lie. If anything, he was always terribly honest.

"Julius was... unique in his research. The first recorded case of an elemental transfer" Shawn stated, a bit of pride in his voice despite himself. He couldn't help but feel a teeny tiny bit proud that he had helped with one of the first recorded cases of... anything in the world of alchemy. "He was a cruel man though. He treated elementals as servants. We were.... expendable." Merely thinking about it brought a stern expression to his face. Not one of anger, but something that closely resembled control.

"Leo was always fond of me. He treated me like a brother, even when he was growing up. It is probably the only reason I am still alive." Julius had actually mentioned, one or twice, that young Leo's attachment to him was the only reason the elemental was kept out of the more dangerous experiments. He had said about as much to Adam, knowing nothing but honesty. "He never wanted to live forever," answered Shawn to Adam's other question. "He merely wished to live long enough to pass on his knowledge to the next generation. But he had not finished yet. Binding me to Leo was his way of of making sure his grandson was safe, even after he was gone." Again, it was something that Julius had told him, a time that felt like so long ago.

Shawn sat in the sand, fingering the small silver coin of his necklace in an absentminded manner. "If we can't remember anything from back then, does that mean we won't remember anything from now if we go back?" It was an idea that truly scared him, not being able to remember his little brother anymore.

Shawn did not apologize for calling Constance a he. He really had no idea it was the polite thing to do. He was however, glad that she was not cruel. "Having family... is nice." He stated awkwardly. Leo had been the first and only bit of family he had ever had, but even that was a great relief.

"What did she do?" Asked Shawn, curiosity compelling him to ask. He was suddenly worried over Adam. Where did the man sleep? Eat? Live? He knew that elementals didn't need much in terms of comfort, or at least he didn't, but one got used to having a home. Shawn could not even imagine being mad at Leo, let alone what he would do if he was. What reason would he have to be mad anyway? Leo was his brother.

Adam couldn't have imagined growing up as something considered expendable by his maker. The very idea of it seemed frightening to Adam, how someone could not matter at all when he had been taught all his life to care for everything and everyone. It was important to have emotions in his world and in his upbringing. The exact opposite felt like a empty void bereft of life. Adam wouldn't have wanted to be a part of that; he shunned the thoughts from his head. "That seems so strange," Adam echoed. "I can't imagine living that way. Constance always told me I was important, that I was special. There weren't many like me, she said. She raised me like her own, even if I never really called her mother. I was supposed to do in public, though." It was so odd recalling a life so different from the life Shawn described to him. Elementals had been special, according to his alchemist.

"I suppose that was one good thing he did," Adam said softly, though he didn't mean it in a cruel way. It was good for Julius to have been concerned about his grandson enough to work so hard to bind his own elemental to the boy. "You should always care about your family. Family is important, and you usually only get one."

A thought he had never really considered before was what would happen to his thoughts from now if he ever went back to his form before. Adam never spent any time thinking about dying or the possibility that he would die one day. "I don't know," Adam said, realizing he never gave the idea much thought. "I always thought one day I would asked to be released, made human, so that maybe then I could join them wherever they go after death. I hear it's very different from us, but I don't remember anything worth going back for in my time before. I would like to follow them." Adam always wondered what it meant, dying as a human. Would he be like them, if he was released? Could he join them, then? Adam always thought he could.

There was no need for Shawn to apologize, since Adam didn't take any offense. Adam wasn't sure whether or not he felt comfortable talking about what Constance did, but he reasoned it was just another thing as all others things. "She lied to me," Adam said. "She told me a man was guilty, and I treated him cruelly. But he was innocent, and I can't take it back now."

Emotions were meaningless in the world Shawn had been 'born' into. Julius had intended for him to be emotionless, to obey orders, to be a subservient drone. "It is not as hard as one would think. You become compelled to obey." Shawn knew that feeling well, the need to obey. It was difficult, if not impossible, to fight. "I was told a new elemental could be easily created. I suspect Julius kept the necessary materials at hand." It might have been funny if it had not been true.

"I never had to worry about calling him father in public." He said the endearment with venom, as if it burned the tip of his tongue. In truth, Julius rarely took Shawn with him anywhere. And on the rare occasion that he had, Shawn was simply ordered to remain silent.

"Leo was the one that made me feel... important. Like your Constance. I would always care about him." To imply anything less would have been insulting. After all, it was Leo who had showered him with attention, even at an early age. It was Leo that Shawn accompanied on the great 'adventures' youths often took, because Julius had been too busy with new research. It was Leo with whom Shawn had grown up with.

Release... now that was something Shawn had never thought about. It was not as if Julius was the type to offer that kind of gift, and he couldn't imagine being released from Leo. "How do you know, that there is anything left after their death?" Shawn asked curiously. If there was, did it mean he would be with both Leo AND Julius? He would rather not think about it.

Shawn looked at him with a kind of worn pity as he made his confession. He was used to things like that, although not from Leo. "It is in a human's nature to lie." He stated, as it was something he truly did believe. "If you are not staying with her. Where do you live now?" The elemental could easily survive out here, even in human form, but it was not something that Shawn would so easily allow.

Adam knew the feeling of being compelled to obey, even if he never thought of it that way. Constance's treatment of him always made him want to obey, as if it was a good thing. To Adam, it had been a good thing. He served the person who made him, who protected him, and it gave him purpose. He never felt like a slave or a servant despite the compulsion. The compulsion was natural, but it was also willing on his behalf. "I know the feeling of having to obey," Adam admitted. "It was just never an obligation." He appeared thoughtful for a moment, mulling it over in his mind. "I wanted to." It was the truth.

If Julius was a well of sour emotions for the elemental, Adam could tell Leo was the opposite by the way Shawn spoke of him. A smile came to his face, and he nodded his head. "Leo is your family," he said. "Like Constance is mine." He empathized for whatever Shawn had experienced at the hands of Julius, but it wasn't like him to dwell on something that was painful for someone else. For the most part, he let it pass out of the conversation unless Shawn brought it up again.

"They say there is," Adam answered. "A life after death for humans. It's very different from our life before, but it always sounded nice, the way they described it. I'd like to go there one day, if an elemental's spirit can go there." Adam wasn't sure if it was real or not, and yet a part of him believed it was real. "It must be real," he said. "Otherwise, where do ghosts come from? Some people linger, but most of them go on to where they're supposed to go."

Adam never thought about it being human nature to lie. He had grown up with a very skewed image of humans. "She never lied, not 'til then." A soft sigh escaped him, and he crossed his arms over his legs. "I've been staying in the forest. It's very quiet and comfortable. Sleeping is easier," Adam said.

"I want to now..." That is, if Leo had ever asked him to do something. But his little brother never did. He merely suggested and let Shawn make his own decisions. "But the past is over, so let us not dwell on it any longer." It was Shawn's way of changing the subject, however abrupt it may have been. The elemental was not one for subtlety.

Leo had always been family... there had been no question about it. But Shawn was glad that Adam's Constance was in any way comparable to Leo. It seemed he did not have a cruel alchemist, just a misguided one.

"They say many things." Shawn noted. "But it does sound nice." Julius had been so sure that it had not existed, that religion (especially Catholicism) were simply ways to control the masses. It had never occurred to Shawn that he might have been incorrect. "I am sure that if your desire to go there is strong enough, you will find a way." It was the elemental's version of the odd human expression 'Where there's a will, there's a way'.

"Was it her intention to lie?" He asked curiously. It did not seem like she would intentionally lie to Adam if she was indeed anything like Leo. Were women not always changing their mind? Wholeheartedly making choices that were so obviously wrong? He had not yet monitored and observed them closely enough to be sure... but Julius had been an extremely intelligent man who was never wrong. Why should this have been an exception?

"If you require anything.... subsistence... shelter... company...Leo and I will be glad to provide it for you. I am sure he would not mind." He was... in essence inviting this man into his home. It was odd how quickly Shawn had grown to trust him.

Adam didn't really believe in any particular religion or the rules that came along with them. It seemed strange to him to live life by rules, to be judged by them afterwards for punishment or reward. It made it all appear to be nothing more than a game, which was cruel to Adam. The one thing he did believe in was the possibility of an afterlife, though. He did not believe there was one for punishment and one for reward, but he did believe there was one. Everyone went to the same one in Adam's head, which contradicted every major religion on the planet.

"I think it would be nice to go there one day," Adam said at last. It was not even known to him the irony of his own name. 'Adam' was the first man in many myths, and his name translated into many things. Christianity wasn't even the first place where the name appeared as the first human being. Adam wasn't a human being, not right now, but maybe one day he would transform into one and join them even in death.

His face seemed to harden some. "Yes, it was her intention to lie to me." Adam took a deep breath, letting it out in a sigh. "She said there was evidence when there wasn't. She said we needed a confession, that he needed to admit his guilt. She told me that, so I would use force against him because she knew I wouldn't question her. I'd never questioned her before. She knew that, and she used me."

It was possible they recognized a strong similarity between them, and maybe not so strange that they had both come to trust the other in such a short time. Adam managed to smile at Shawn, though faintly. "That's very nice of you both. I will remember in case it gets too cold at night." That was his way of saying he would think about it. For now, Adam liked his loneliness and the time to himself. Living with them might take away from what he was trying to learn at this point in his life.

Shawn also did not believe in any particular religion, though he had been 'raised' to distrust Catholicism. The only rules in his life, were those set by others. He still did not know what the consequences for breaking them were. He had never tried.

"You will go there then." Shawn said with certainty. Why he was so eager to assure Adam in something he did not believe in, he had no idea, but it seemed appropriate.

Shawn managed a smile in return, which was rare for someone who he had only so recently met. "I am truly sorry for Constance's actions. Leo and I will be expecting you, in case you do decide to stop by. I do not wish for you to suffer out here." He gave the elemental a way to reach the aforementioned home, in case he should decide to stop in.

He got up with grace and efficiency befitting an air elemental. "I am sorry to interrupt your thoughts. Good-bye, and good luck." He hovered over the ground for a second, in case there was something Adam needed to say, before taking off again. Lost in his own thoughts.

Adam smiled at the other elemental, whom he was glad to have met tonight. He wasn't sure what to say to the offer made, except for thank you. "Thank you," Adam said out loud, and he let out a small sigh from the confines of his lungs.

He was a bit surprised when Shawn suddenly decided to go, but it was very late and so perhaps he shouldn't be. "Good luck to you, too," Adam replied with a wave of his hand in farewell. He turned his attention back to the plants he had caused to grow out to the water, invoking them to retreat back onto land where they belonged. They had not gone into the water, only tapped and touched at the surface, which he learned they enjoyed very much.

Adam would out here for a while yet until he grew tired and decided to find a place to rest for the night.
