Who: Elijah and Umeko
When:Late morning
Where: Lake Alata’elen / Beach
What:

Elijah’s time in the haven had mostly been spent within the confines of his bungalow. He only went out to get food on occasion; he never went out to the Tiki Hut down the way or the Wine Bar in the town. Restaurant and café’s were out of the question, too. No, Elijah was happy living in solitude and organizing all of Aubert’s journals. It reminded him of the times he and the alchemist would spend days on end in the lab, testing theories and techniques, and writing down every last detail of the outcome, good or bad.

Though Elijah wouldn’t admit it out loud, he missed his alchemist.

But human relationships were just that – impermanent. Nothing lived forever, not even him. If he was an elemental he would exist until the end of time, but then he would have no memories. No experiences. No way of connecting with the world at all. It was a fair trade, in his opinion, to be given life and a consciousness in exchange for immortality. What was immortality anyway except heartbreak and sorrow? Live forever only to see the ones around you die and perish? No thank you, that wasn’t for the elemental. But at the same time, if everything died then what was the point in living at all?

He left his water bungalow today, and took a stroll down the beach in his bare feet. The sand felt good as they crept in between his toes. It was fine and smooth, and cool to the touch. He reveled in the feel of it, and sat down on the sand so that he could dig his hands into the beach as well. Elijah sighed, eyes gazing out toward the water longingly. He could hear some of the creatures that lingered just beneath the surface, and with flick of his hand he forced the water to rise up from the lake, forming a bubble that hovered above the waves. There within the floating bubble, was a small fish, and it continued to swim along as if nothing was wrong.

Elijah summoned the ball of water toward him and watched the fish with childlike curiosity. Its mouth opened and closed as it pushed water past its gills to deliver oxygen to the rest of its body. The water elemental’s lips pulled upward into a small smile, barely noticing the person who had come upon him.

Umeko…wasn’t a stalker. She just liked to watch people. She liked to play a guessing game of what they might be thinking, what they were like, what their day was like prior to their day outside, what they were planning to do..oh and of course how they might react if they knew she might have been following them. Life was about watching others in her opinion. It wasn’t some spiritual crap she learned, she just wanted a reason to watch people..or check people out. In the sand man’s case. It was to check him out…sort of. He was hot but he had an interesting vibe about him. She had this thing for Nico though. Damn. Ohh, Halloween! what was she going to wear for Halloween..she had to surprise him!

Her mind had to come back to planet “following the man of interest” before she lost him. She made sure her steps continued to remain like a ghost as he ventured further into the cold areas of the water. What the hell was he thinking? Didn’t he know it was damn cold outside? Maybe he was one of those people who got some thrill swimming in the chill of fall. Hell to the no in regards to her.

When she saw the man..well it seemed like he was playing with water (how unfair), she made a small ‘whoa’ noise before she loudly let herself be known. His abilities caused a glint in her eyes.

“HEY THERE BLUE-UH BUBBLY MAN!!” She paused for a moment. “IF THAT’S HOW YOU FISH, THEN THAT IS TOTALLY BADASS!”

Elijah hadn't noticed Umeko at all, and it wasn't until she made her outburst did he look at her over his shoulder. Elijah was normally more aware of his surroundings, but his mind was elsewhere today. He had half a mind to switch into his elemental form and disappear into the lake, but he didn't. The 'portable' fish bubble remained floating in the air as the elemental stepped backward out of the shallow waters that barely covered his ankles.

"Hello." It was a simple greeting, one that suited the situation in his opinion. He wasn't sure what else to say to the girl though he did gaze at her in interest. He had over a hundred years of life, but he still found it difficult to determine which reactions were best for certain people. Aubert was better with it than he was, and he wished the old man was here with him. Though it had been over twenty years since the alchemist's death, Elijah still missed his presence.

Elijah cleared his throat, and turned around to face the girl, bringing the bubble with him. "No, this isn't how I fish," he said with a small twitch of his lips. "I was just... playing around." He shrugged a little and then floated the bubble over toward Umeko. "He wanted to fly, and this was the only way to get him out of the water without killing him." The fish in the floating bubble watched Umeko from behind the clear water. Its mouth was opening and closing in the way that fishes normally do, and its fins moved back and forth in the liquid like wings moving in slow-motion.

Well, on the plus side, he was showing signs of being social. Umeko could have gotten the sort of look that clearly read ‘go away’. Or, the stranger may have not said anything at all. If that were the case, Umeko would have still kept talking about the coolest bubble she had ever fricken seen. This was one for totally O.M.G. type diary entries. He was cute and he had a totally awesome power?

She gave a frown when she learned that it wasn’t his way of fishing. Darn, because if it was, he could collect some yummy fish and have one hell of a dinner. The man seemed to steer more towards respecting the fish. He seemed to be enjoying watching the creature whirl around its own little compact world. She felt kinda bad, but she wanted to put a finger out and pop the bubble.

“Ya know? I never thought about fishes wanting to fly since they have such tiny brains. I figured they were too dumb to know what flying was.” She commented, lost in watching the bubble. “Huh. But it does seem to be enjoying itself.” She glanced over at the stranger for a moment before she spoke teasingly. “You must be easily amused ya know. I would be too if I could put things in bubbles. I’d put myself in a bubble and totally have a Wizard of Oz type of moment. That is totally playing around to the extreme level. “

She figured if she was going to talk is ear off, she may as well introduce herself. “Well bubble boy-er man even, my name is Umeko.” She offered her petite hand. “Pleased to meet’cha!”

The bubble was unbreakable as it was held together by Elijah's powers. Umeko could have placed her finger against the surface and all it would have done was sink into the watery environment within. The fish would have probably darted around, scared out of its mind, until it calmed down enough to swim over to investigate the 'intruder'. That's all that would have happened, had the young girl decided to do such a thing.

But she didn't, and instead the fish continued to swim around seemingly oblivious to everything. "Fish may be simple creatures," Elijah said as he floated the water-filled bubble back to himself. "But they do have wants, and dreams. People just don't know because they can't talk with them." He shrugged it off as if it wasn't a big deal, and then smiled at the fish and the girl. "And he is enjoying himself."

The young girl was interesting to say the least. She did talk a lot, that much was certain, but Elijah wasn't sure whey she had decided to come up and talk to him. He had learned that sometimes people randomly did things like that - talked to people they didn't know especially well. Someone once told him that was the only way to really get to know anyone at all, engage them in conversation and see where it goes. If you got along then you continued talking, if you didn't then you move on to the next person.

The girl's name was interesting, but not as interesting as when she called him 'bubble man'. He had to let out a short chuckle as he took her hand to shake it in introduction. "Elijah," he said with a nod. "It's a pleasure." Aubert had taught the elemental the importance of manners, and Elijah certainly wasn't lacking in that department.

Now Umeko was stuck on thinking what fish wanted and dreamed about. Did they dream about being like nemo? Having a turtle as a friend and a bright blue and yellow fish as a friend as well? Maybe they wanted a spree of nice juicy smaller fish for breakfast. That might sound cool. Oh! Or maybe they wanted to be like dolphins instead. Or maybe bigger species than humans so that they could put them on hooks and eat them..okay that one was a little morbid. Not to mention maybe she was thinking into the thoughts and dreams thing too much.

The man seemed so insightful and so nice. Almost like she could ask him anything and he would have an intelligent answer. But it was good enough just to have his name. "Well it is a pleasure to meet you too, Elijah. That's quite an awesome name.." She gave an apologetic glance. "I give everyone nicknames. It's a habit."

She tilted her head as her hand moved close to the bubble. "So, how do you do that? Can you only do cool water things around here?"

Fish were simple creatures that tried their best to survive the dog-eat-dog (or fish-eat-fish) world that they lived in. They had friends, other fish that they played and interacted with, fish that they were sure would not nibble at their fins. Some of them liked to explore, others liked the safety of their small environments. And there were some, like the fish inside of Elijah's bubble, that dreamt of flying and seeing the world above the water.

Elijah didn't think that he was very insightful, or wise. He also didn't think he was very nice. In fact, there were times when he could be closed-off, and sometimes mean. This girl, though, caught him on a good day so she didn't experience any of that. He smiled a bit when she complimented his name, nodding in response. It wasn't so bad interacting with people, and there were times when he found that he missed it. He especially missed working in an alchemy lab, and he made a mental note to go there sometime later in the week.

The young girl was fascinated with his bubble though it wasn't really anything special in his opinion. He shrugged a bit and then made the bubble move back toward the water to rest upon the surface. "I'm a water elemental," he answered flatly. "So yeah, I can only manipulate water." He waved his hand at the lake's surface and formed a medium-sized wave. The fish's bubble floated on the surface, moving up and down with the wave. The water crashed upon the shore around their feet before it receded away from them.

Hmm..were all water people cute? Was there like a water society of cute people? If so, damn count this girl in because Nico was fine and he was a water sprite and although this man was a little bit on somewhat not-social side, he was still cute and what do you know? He was a man among the water kinds!

“Really!? That is so weird. You see my..” Hmm, she guessed for now they were sort of like friends. Sadly the word made her frown because she liked him more than just a friend. “Friend. Yes, my friend he is a water sprite. Is that like the same thing?” Umeko wasn’t all in touch with all the species around. Everyday it seemed like she was learning more about everyone and everything. Just because they shared the same power of water, didn’t mean they shared the same power. She didn’t see him playing with mist or anything.

“He can do awesome things like control rain and make mist and all! Can you do that?” The therianthrope let her head somewhat tilt to the side. “And..you’re not like..glued towards the water or anything are you? Cus’ come on let’s walk a bit!”

Elijah didn't mean to be anti-social, at least not consciously. He was just wary of forming any deep relationships. Deep down he knew that was no way to live, but for the moment he couldn't help but act that way. He did muster up a smile for the therianthrope as she spoke about her 'friend' (though Elijah got the distinct feeling that the friend was probably more than that).

"Water sprites possess similar powers, but as an elemental I have greater control over water itself. Sprites, from what I've learned, have more specialized water abilities." Elijah had heard about sprites and other elemental based praeternaturals, though he did not have the chance to meet many (if any) in his lifetime. "Rain and mist making are part of an elemental's powers," he explained. "But I'm sure your friend is much better at it than me."

He started walking along with Umeko when she invited him to, his feet sinking into the sank ever so slightly with each step. The girl was actually good company; her light-hearted nature made it easy for Elijah to relax and go along with her. The elemental shoved his hands into his pockets as they walked. "I'm not glued to the water," he answered with a small chuckle. "But I do like being near it. But that is the advantage of having a human form. I have the freedom to go to other places and see other things. To have memories..." He paused a little and stopped walking to look out over the lake. "I don't remember anything from before I was created."

Created? Umeko looked over at him with an alarmed expression. “Created?” She gave somewhat of a saddened expression. Was he never a baby? Did he just look like this forever? He seemed to have a childlike curiosity at times, but he was indeed very wise. He seemed to know a lot more than her in some areas than she. “I don’t remember some things either! Like..when I was 2 years and earlier I don’t remember a thing!” She admitted with a giggle.

“…But what don’t you remember? What is the first thing you remember?” She saw this man as rather fascinating. “I wish I could be glued to something. I am rather glued to the television and video games. But sadly I don’t have either of them here. So I would say that I am glued to food.”

The therianthrope took a glance at the lake as well then back to Elijah. “You know. I wish it was always warm here. Being near the lake makes me want to swim. I’m not looking forward to the cold weather.”

Umeko was an... interesting girl. And boy was she a talker. Yep, she definitely talked a lot. Elijah wasn't sure how to handle all of her questions since it seemed like she had a ton of them. He didn't really mind - not really. Though at some point he might just get tired of talking and not answer her at all. It was hard to say when Elijah would reach that point since at the moment he was okay with answering her questions.

"I just don't remember anything from before I was bound to this body," he said simply. It was a simple answer in the elemental's mind. There were times (such as that moment) that Elijah forgot that not all humans or praeternaturals were aware of what alchemists and elementals were. Some didn't even know that it was possible to bind an entity to a body, thereby making it your slave until the day the alchemist passed. Luckily for Elijah, Aubert was the type of alchemist who longed to give his elemental freedom and the chance to have a life of his own.

"The first thing I remember was seeing light... and a ceiling. And there was this man smiling down at me. He told me his name, and then he gave me mine." The memory was still very clear to Elijah, and a small, barely there smile tugged on his lips. It disappeared quickly though, just as quickly as the girl switched topics on him.

"You know, the lagoon is warm all year round." He had ventured over to that area several times since the cold weather had fallen upon the valley. Though in truth he barely felt the cool chill of the water while he was in his elemental form. And if he wanted to swim, he could swim for hours and hours on end without having to come up for a breath. He was one with the water, and it was one with him. "You could always wear a wet suit to go swim," he offered. "They're supposed to insulate your body from the cold. But they're not comfortable. Tried them once." Elijah made a face. "It felt like I had walrus skin, and then taking the suit off felt like I was shedding skin. It was weird."

Umeko tilted her head when she saw Elijah smile just for a moment. It was like she was trying to capture his small smile and was determined to try and get him to smile again. If not now then perhaps sometime sooner. She wanted to declare herself as someone who could make people smile. Not just to earn the name, but she enjoyed watching people smile. Especially guys who seemed so quiet and somewhat withdrawn like Elijah. At least he seemed that way. This was coming from someone who was way beyond talkative and hyper most of the time.

“You know, did you know humans don’t remember when they are born? Most kids don’t remember what life is like until the are like two years old! So what you experienced? Is totally amazing. I would have given anything to have seen what my parents were like when they first saw me!” It was true. She wanted to know if they were all beady eyed or if they were thinking she was an ugly baby. Then again, there was the fact that baby had their eyes closed.

She couldn’t help but laugh when Elijah explained what it was like to be in a wet suit.

“You know. You are funny when you don’t mean to be!”

Elijah arched a brow at Umeko, wondering why the girl found him so interesting. He was far from it, at least in his opinion. Still, it was nice knowing that she didn't mind being around him or talking to him. Elijah had to be careful, though; he didn't want to get too attached to someone only to have the disappoint of losing them in the future.

"I've never thought of it that way," he said in a thoughtful voice. "I guess I have the advantage over other people." Another smile tugged at his lips, a joke bubbling to the surface from within. "I didn't have to go through puberty or shit, so thumbs up for that." His smile grew a bit, but he bit it back after a moment. The elemental let out a long sigh, and then looked down at their feet.

"Let's get out of the water," he said with a grin. "C'mon, I'll get you something warm to drink in town." He walked alongside Umeko, and away from the water that he was so connected with. Perhaps venturing into town wouldn't be so bad, not with a playful companion by his side.
