Sunday: October 28, 2007
Who: Malcolm, Idehr, Maddy, Emily, Echo, Chris, Charlie, Logan, Aveira, Radu, Elspeth Gray and Fiona Gray (I got everyone, right?)
When: Evening
Where: The Gray-Raokas Cottage
What: The Gray-Raokas Dinner Party

Malcolm was very excited. It was the first time they had a party. Oh, they had been a bunch of parties. There had been quite a few festivals in Elysium. But this was the first time the Raokas-Gray clan had their own party. It seemed to make thing more 'real', a real family. Ide was in the kitchen make dinner while Malcolm was setting the table. Actually, it was tables. With the number of people they had coming, they had to set up two extra tables, putting them together to form one long one.

"Malcolm!" Maddy said, running down the stairs. She was dressed in a cute dress. Her hair was in pigtails, but she had a pair of hair clips in her hand. "Mal Mal Mal... Can you help me?" She held out the hair clips to him.

Malcolm knelt down and took the clips from Maddy. "All right." He slipped the clips into her hair, pushing the locks back off her face. "There you go. Looks perfect."

Maddy beamed at Malcolm. She twirled around. "How do I look?"

"Beautiful." Malcolm gave her a pat on the arm. "Are you ready for everyone to come over and tell you how pretty you are?"

Maddy nodded. "Uh-huh. And have lots of fun with all our friends!"

ARRIVAL OF GUESTS

Malcolm was just finishing the last of the table-setting (with the help of Maddy). "How are things going in there, Ide?" Malcolm called into the kitchen. "I think we're just about ready in here and everyone's going to be arriving soon."

Maddy grabbed the hem of Malcolm's jacket and tugging on him. "Mal, you have to come here."

Malcolm crouched down, frowning slightly in confusion. "What is it, Maddy?"

Maddy smiled and played with Malcolm's tie, adjusting it so it was straight and then went to his hair, making sure it was standing up well. Maddy let out a small giggle. Malcolm was one of the few people she had met who looked better with his hair sticking up as much as possible. "There." Maddy nodded firmly. "Now Miss Emily will think you're very handsome."

"Thank you so much," Malcolm smiled at his foster daughter. He then heard the knock at the door. "Maybe that's her."

Excited was not the word for what Idehr felt at the moment. He found the box at the back of one of the cabinets and reached to take the Super Emergency Whiskey out of it. It was designed so his hand would have to push back the sharp spikes in order to get the bottle, so he had to want it enough to endure the pain. He chugged at least a quarter of it when he flipped off the top and then focused on bandaging his left hand. His parents never had dinner parties and the last time he remembered being with a large group of people for a meal was twelve years ago. His relatives joined them for Christmas supper, but that was different; they all knew him and were content to talk amongst themselves.

Being one of the hosts of a party was another thing entirely. Would he be expected to start conversations or would the guests do that themselves? Was Aveira going to attend? He focused on making sure the food in one of the pots did not burn and adjusting the taste of another dish, until he heard Malcolm's voice. Was it that time already? "Fine," he said and took another few swigs before lowering the heat on the stove. Leaving the kitchen, he hurried to his room to toss on a better shirt and run a comb through his hair.

He heard the knock on the door and a fresh wave of panic overtook him, leaving his room to head toward the door. Glancing at Malcolm to silently ask who would open it, he walked over to Maddy as a potential source of comfort. His hand rested on her shoulder and she reached up to touch it. It helped, really, and he gave her a small smile before he opened the door.

Being invited to a dinner party hosted by Malcolm and Idehr was surprising, although delightful nonetheless. Emily made sure that she looked her best in a black dress quickly before helping Echo with her hairdo. She hummed a song under her breath and soon enough, everyone was ready to leave for the other forest cottage. Emily could not contain the butterflies flitting about in her stomach as she walked to Malcolm and Idehr's cottage and tried to listen to her daughter talking about...something. "Sweetie," she said, "remember to be on your best behavior and talk to Idehr, Maddy, and Malcolm, okay?" Although talking was not a problem for her daughter, the three were the hosts of the party and she did want Echo and Malcolm to get along.

Echo knew it was natural for her mother to say it, but she still made a face. How ironic it was for Emily to give her advice on talking to people when she made pathetic attempts herself. "Yes, I know," she said. "I'll be the life of the party so you won't have to." Her smile was a bit cheeky as she knocked on the door. It opened after a little while and Echo grinned excitedly at Idehr on the other side. "Hi, Ide! It's nice to see you!" She had a particular fondness for the man who built her a fantastic treehouse. She gave him a hug and found Malcolm, giving him one as well before turning to Maddy. "And you look adorable!" The dress suited her well.

Emily gave Ide a smile and a greeting, finding Malcolm for a kiss. Maddy deserved a hug and Emily bent down to wrap her arms around her briefly. "Hi," she said. "I'm happy to see you. Echo's right, you do look very pretty in your dress. Now, can you tell me where we're sitting?" She glanced at both men, wondering if it was free sitting or not.

Chris straightened her ponytail before she raised her hand to knock on the door. A dinner party sounded so adult to her, and she felt a little more grown-up just being invited to one. Charlie was standing behind her, meeting up with her and Logan as they were on their way to Malcolm's house. He was poking her in the middle of her back and chuckling as he did.

"Will you stop!" Chris said through gritted teeth as she swatted at him in annoyance. "You're so juvenile!"

Charlie poked his sister once more for good measure, and stuck his tongue at her even though she couldn't see it. "I'm still older than you," he retorted as if that was the only reason he needed to bother the hell out of her. Chris rolled her eyes, but turned to Logan to smile brightly at him.

"It'll be good to see Maddy, won't it?" She was completely ignoring her brother at this point, even though he kept messing with her. She tried her best to keep her cool, but if he kept up with the poking and the tugging she'd have to kick his butt. Seriously.

Malcolm happily returned the kiss to Emily. "It's wonderful to see you," he said softly, gently stroking her hair. "You look beautiful tonight."

he then looked down at Echo. "And you look beautiful as well." He accepted the hug from Echo. "I hope you two are hungry. Ide's been working very hard all day."

He heard the knock at the door and went to answer it. He smiled when he saw Chris, Charlie and Logan. "Well, hello!" He stepped aside to let them inside. "I'm so glad you could come. We haven't had the chance to spend much time together." He nodded to Logan. "How are you doing, Logan?"

Logan looked away and made no sound. Now that he was in a very public place, he found his voice gone once again.

"Well, please... Come in..." Malcolm gestured again for them to come in. "Maddy has been waiting for you three all day."

"Chris, Chris, Chris!!! Charlie, Charlie, Charlie!!! Logan, Logan, Logan!!" Maddy ran to the door and threw herself at each of the teenagers in turn.

MINGLING

The guests had all arrived and Malcolm felt a twitter of excitement. There were some many people he wanted to talk to, but he felt it his brotherly duty to first speak to his sisters. He hadn't been spending much time at them since arriving in Elysium. He had been so busy with the generators, Maddy and of course Emily.

Malcolm made his way over to Elspeth and Fiona. Elspeth had a look of vague contempt on her face, but Malcolm paid no attention to it. Elspeth always looked liked that. Fiona, on the otherhand, looked very nervous. This was something Malcolm noticed.

"Are you all right?" Malcolm asked.

Elspeth discreetly elbowed Fiona in the side, causing her to squeak. "Fine, fine..." Fiona's voice was shaky and high. "I've just missed you."

"I've missed you too." Malcolm pulled Fiona into a hug. He then hugged Elspeth, which took the dour woman by complete surprise.

Malcolm smiled brightly. "Now... Have you two met all my friends?"

DINNER TIME

The party was in full swing. Everyone was talking and seeming to have a good time. Except for Elspeth, but she never seemed to have a good time. Malcolm beamed, glad things seemed to be going successfully.

The smells from the kitchen were amazing. Malcolm took out his pocketwatch and glanced at it. He then looked to Ide. "It's smelling really good, Ide. It should be just about ready, shouldn't it? Should we start gathering at the table?"

TROUBLE
[info]thedaedalus

Dinner was amazing. It had turned out than Malcolm could have ever imagined. He gave Ide a big smile and a small nod, in silent thanks for the meal. He looked to his side and beamed at Emily. He was so glad she was here with him. He hoped there would be more times like this in the future.

Malcolm got to his feet, raising his glass. "I'd like to make a toast," Malcolm said, looking around. "We've all gone through hard times lately. But through the hardships, we've managed to find friends..." He looked to Maddy. "Family..." He then looked to Emily. "Love." He smiled softly. "As difficult as things may seem, we always have..."

Malcolm gasped. The wineglass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the table and staining the tablecloth. His now-empty hand clutched his chest as he struggled to breathe.

"Something's wrong," he rasped out before he slid to the ground.

Idehr returned the smile with a small one of his own to let Malcolm know that making the meal had been not much trouble, as long as everyone enjoyed it. Everything seemed to be going well, much to his delight, and both Maddy and Malcolm were so happy. He never wanted this night or their happiness to end, because he was happy when they were happy. He looked at Malcolm rising and starting his toast. So far, it was true - everyone had been through their troubles, but somehow they managed to have an evening of good time so far...

Malcolm's gasp and dropping his wine glass was definitely unusual and Idehr furrowed his brow in confusion. Panic overtook the confusion as Malcolm clutched his chest like a heart attack, but then fell to the floor. What was wrong? He quickly rose from his chair and went to his friend's side. "Malcolm?" he whispered. Something was oh-so-wrong. It did not look like Malcolm was breathing. Blood drained from his face, his feet would not move, and his heart thumped loudly in his chest. Malcolm?

Was he dying? Something was wrong. He had to do something. But he couldn't move, he was too frightened. Malcolm was going to die.

Malcolm wasn't unconscious, but his brain felt like it had shut down. All he could focus on was the pain. His heart felt like it had seized in his chest. Maybe it actually had. Malcolm wasn't good with medical stuff. The human body was a mystery to him, unlike electronics and gadgets.

He tried to draw breath and managed to focus on something other than the pain coursing through his body. Even with his blurred vision, he could see Logan, Chris and Charlie staring at him in shock and horror. Emily and Echo. He felt another wave of pain when he set his fuzzy gaze on Maddy. Poor Maddy, who looked terrified.

"Get me out of here," Malcolm rasped softly to Ide. "Get me to the Medical Pavilion. Please."

Having gotten the words out, Malcolm gave himself into the pain and slid into unconsciousness.
