Who: Riley and Max
Where: The Gift Shop
When: Late Afternoon
What: Riley meets someone new

Riley liked working at the gift shop. It was an easy job that had her sleeping half of the time thanks to the two Asian twins working. They seemed like nice gals. Not to mention she had a fantasy in her mind about havin’ her a bit of both of them. Maybe if she took them home she could persuade them. Especially the shy one. She said yes to everything. The thought made her smile a little deviously while she stocked a few items.

She began to work on putting up a few ceramic items on the upper shelves but cursed when she realized she wasn’t quite tall enough. “Fucken figures.” Riley never usually had to deal with how short she was, but moments like this reminded her. She set the item down and looked for something to step on.

It was then Riley realized there was a customer in the shop. Or maybe someone just taking a look around. “Can I help you?” Or maybe he could help her. No way in hell did she feel like placing items on a high shelf all day. He was a good deal taller. Time to be nice.

Max didn't have anyone to get a gift for, but he was enjoying his time the last two days messing around inside of the shops at the market place. His curiosity got the best of him, and he wanted to see what sort of things they had in here. He poked and proded at the various items on the shelves when his eyes suddenly caught sight of a very nice hat that looked like it popped out of an Indiana Jones movie. Max picked it up and stared at it in disbelief, feeling the material and recognizing immediately it was leather. This was a nice hat. Having forgotten all about most of what he was told, Max figured he had to pay for this beauty. There was no way he could just walk out of here with it.

He heard a female employee's voice and turned around, holding up the hat with one hand. "Yeah," he asked slowly, "how much is this thing?" Max still thought things came with a price. Shit, he'd lived that way all his life and getting used to not paying for things was going to be weird. How did he expect to get a hat he might have to pay for, anyway? Maybe he'd go get a job like this woman and save up for it. Shouldn't be too hard if all he wanted was a hat.

Riley gave out a snort and propped herself up on the table, making sure she didn’t knock anything over. Better yet she wanted to make sure she didn’t sit on anything. The other day she swore she was picking glass out of her left ass cheek for twelve hours. But anyways. “Well fuck, you must be a newbie to this place.” She said it in a teasing tone, not in a way to start a fight.

“In this here place you trade things. Money isn’t worth shit here.” She gave off a small laugh. “I wish that were true everywhere. Could have been a millionaire for no fucken’ reason.” She decided to get to the point. It seemed like he may have been interested in that pretty stellar hat.

“Like, if you have something that can benefit this shop and can take place for the hat, it’s a fair trade. Or you can give me something I give a damn about and I won’t tell anyone you took it.” Yeah, what a fine shop keeper she was. Normally, she was good but she was willing to give a new guy a break.

Max looked from side to side with his eyes for a moment, a sort of incredulous look on his face. "Am I that obvious?" he asked, trying to hold back the hint of a laugh at the end. With one hand pressed against the top inside of the hat, he clapped his hands together. He definitely caught the teasing tone in her voice. Max had hoped it wouldn't have been that noticeable. He was really going for passing off as just another guy in the street, but this woman had the pleasure of smacking that goal right out of his head. Max actually felt kind of nervous being new and having another person gauge that much off of him.

Chewing on his lower lip, Max swung the hat around one of his fingers and listened to her. He raised his eyebrows. "Trade things? Does that mean all things? You can't just walk out with something? 'Cause I'll pocket this bad boy when you aren't looking." Max put the hat on his head and adjusted it. "Or maybe just walk outta here with it on my head." He smirked at her, his lopsided grin showing off.

He removed the hat from his head and glanced around the shop to get a better idea of what sort of things they wanted here. When he remembered he didn't own anything, though, Max frowned and looked down at the hat. "Well, looks like I'm out of luck," he lamented. "Being new here, I don't actually own anything yet to trade with."

Riley gave a sly smile when she discovered she found herself a "fresh one" as she liked to call them. She didn't really talk to many people who were new arrivals to the sanctuary. She found herself curious as to how the hell he got here. She knew of the Elven Ship arriving. Riley just didn't know how people still managed to survive if not in other havens. Many times she never gave a damn. Or told herself she better not. It was best not to think of a world she couldn't go back to.

"I can't tell you're a newbie because of the currency thing. You got me colored curious now. I would never pry into peoples business." Of course that was a damn lie. "But I'm thinking up things like how did you get here, where are ya from..things like that. If you didn't ask me the question of the currency, I would have pegged ya for a regular guy being new only to this shop."

Her brow rose up suddenly about him stealing the hat. She was no angel, there were things she longed to steal in the shop as well. But because she was always in for a challenge and wanted to make it clear she wasn't one to fuck around with she set a hand on her hip and let him know something right off the bat.

"You walk out of here with anything that has been stolen, I will beat your ass into tommorrow." She laughed after she stated so. "Though I'm serious about kickin' your ass, I doubt I would resort to beating you up. You're new here. If you really have nothing to trade and aren't yanking on my chain, I will hand you the hat free of charge."

If he was lying though, his ass kicking was coming in hard.

He couldn't help but smile at her as she mentioned all the things she was wondering about him now. Normally, he wouldn't drop anything about himself to another person he had just met. Max tended to be a private person that way, but she was light-hearted and cute, and it was easy to be honest with her. Max found himself laughing at her statement that she'd 'beat his ass into tomorrow' for walking out with a stolen hat. So, you could still steal things here. That was interesting to know. Max hadn't thought it'd be possible without currency.

Waltzing over to the table she was sitting on, Max hoisted himself onto it beside Riley. He turned to look at her as he tilted his hat and touched the rim of it. "Well," Max told her, "I could trade you the shirt off my back if you're into that sort of thing. But then I'd have to walk around shirtless until I got home, and I'm not sure how much people might stare." Max rubbed his chin as if to be thoughtful about the suggestion. "Do shirtless men attract a lot of attention in town?"

He laughed and rested his hand on the table. Max thought he might tell her the truth about where he was from and how he got here. It was an interesting story. "Do you really want to know how I got here and where I'm from?" Max leaned over a little, smiling smugly. "I mean, since you asked so nicely..."

Well hell. Riley needed more friends like this. He was an exact reminder of the kind of friends she hung out with back home. Easy to talk to on first meet, comfortable to joke around with, hot, and best of all he seemed a bit cocky or at the very least confident. It was hard to explain but Riley liked that in a person. She was a boxer. Confidence in the opponet had some sort of thrill attached to it. It was even better when a friend had it. Then if she teased Max he wouldn't take such offense to it.

The puma-shifter inspected his shirt and she quite liked it. She always walked around in mens shirts around her bungalow. Since she was so short they made perfect pajamas. Not to mention she would totally wear it anyways. He was probably quite impressive under that shirt and could parade himself shirtless all day. Riley only had about three men she would do in the sanctuary. It was two until Max came in.

"You can hand over your shirt." She stated with a cheeky smile. "Oh people do it all the time. Just be aware that you'll have people wanting to jump your bones. " She stated frankly. "You'll also be cold which sucks for you. Unless you run home of course." Her face lit up with a smile.

Riley leaned closer to Max even after he leaned towards her. There was certaintly something interesting about him and she wouldn't let him leave unless he told her his story. Everybody had one about how they got here. But some tales were far more interesting. I mean she did give him a welcome present. He owed her. "Oh, I wanna hear it." She confirmed. "And for the misfortune that name tags ain't my thing. I'm Riley."

Max wasn't cocky. Well, maybe to a small degree. Confidence was a word that suited him best. He had always been confident in himself and his abilities, and no one could tell him differently. He didn't normally play well with mousy people. It took someone with spunk to put up with him, let alone be in the same room with him. Softies just weren't his thing, whether it was a friend or something more. His dating life was shit, though, and Max was certainly single more often than he ever dated. Hiding something like being a profession thief was a hard whenever people got too close to you.

A small smile lingered on his face as she inspected his shirt. He didn't assume she wanted a piece of him, but a little admiration went a long way. He raised his eyebrows when she told him to hand over his shirt, and then a laugh escaped his mouth as she claimed people would try to jump his bones. He had to think about it. He could have her put the hat on layaway or some crap for him, and then he had an excuse to come back to the shop and say hi again while she was working. He'd bring an extra shirt that time and had it over. The idea made him chuckle inwardly.

"Me? Cold? I grew up in New York. I can fend off winter like nobody's business." He adjusted the hat on his head, smiling as he considered telling her his story. "I'm Max, Riley. Nice name," he complimented her. "Has a certain fierceness to it with a cute 'lee' ending."

As for his story, it was a long one. "Prepare yourself," he began dramatically, "for the story of a lifetime . . . " His voice kept the tone as he spoke, accentuating his tale as he relayed his trials to her in cinematic format. "I was on vacation in Italy with my hard-earned money, basking in the scenery when the shocking news of a war reached my ears. I fled from the city and found a remote cabin in the Italian countryside. There I stayed for months, listening to the radio and waiting for it all to end. I had to fend for my own food, and I went hunting with the rifles left behind in the cabin. One day, the radio stopped working. I ventured outside of my safe zone and took a boat to sail to Greece. I found a man injured in the water and rescued him, bringing him aboard. We took a river inland, following it to its end, and at the end of the river . . . "

Max's dramatic tone suddenly dropped, and he shrugged mildly. "I found this place," he added, turning to give her a cheeky grin. "Now, how much of that story is made up and how much is true?" Max challenged Riley.

“New York ?” She repeated. “No shit.” She couldn’t do it. All of her life she was nourished with warm weather and if she suddenly was stuck in winter weather in New York? God she would be throwing down one hell of a bitch fit. She was used to the cold, but it was what one would call ‘pansy’ type of cold. She heard of the cruel weather of New York City and decided if she ever went there it would either be in the summer, or (if she was going to be promised a good time) she would suffer the weather for New Year’s eve. The whole Rockefeller thing seemed like the shit. “I’m a Vegas gal. Well-sorta” Oh and she was one hell of a Vegas girl at that.

When he spoke of her name, she couldn’t help but smile. “Yeah, well you know. It fits. I am a boxer. So it’s like, I am a fierce bitch with the Ri-“ She made a sweet face. “Then the ley says that after my ass kicking I am a sugarcookie.” She chuckled a bit then referred to his name. “I like your name. It’s cute as well. But it’s also short and sweet yet kind of to the point.”

Riley made an “ohh I am ever so ready face” before she listened to Max’s story. It was sure as hell a wild one. He was a man who had to survive? Hunt for food? A loner? AND he saved another mans life before he got here? There was a long pause.

“I believe you.” She gave a sincere grin. “I was found by a Native American Reserve when I was a child and for most of my life was raised by the last remaining Navajo’s in Arizona. I grew up surrounded by various tribes of Native Americans and also had to hunt for food. I sometimes had to pull out the guts and shit when we were making thingsout of fur. Or selling it because the tribe needed money.”

She gave a sly little wink. “So, I can’t be the only one out there who has had some amazing tales to tell that aren’t lies.” God though, his story could sure as hell get him laid if it were true. Lucky bastard.

Max couldn't help but laugh out loud. The way she explained her name made her all the more endearing, and Max made a mental note that he would definitely have to come up to The Gift Shop another time to see her again. Riley seemed like the type of person he would actually spend time with, and that said something since Max didn't keep too much company. After all, he wasn't the center of attention in a large room of people. Max preferred to blend in during situations like that. But one on one like this, Max like getting some attention. If they ever became real friends, they could be thick as thieves. No pun intended.

He shrugged his shoulders slightly and made a silly face when she said she liked his name. Max wasn't going to explain how it was short for Maximilian. He hated that name more than anything. "Very much to the point," he joked.

As for his story, all of it was true except for one part. The whole thing about hunting was a big lie because Max didn't know how to hunt to save his ass. He lived mostly off of canned food, berries, and botched fishing attempts in a river and nearby lake. Coming up with food had been hard as hell for him, but he did his best to get by. It sounded much more macho to say he had hunted down all of his food, though. Yeah, Max liked that story better than the truth. It went great with the whole cabin setting, too.

Max was surprised by what Riley revealed about her own past to him. "No shit," Max said, raising a single eyebrow. "Wow," he added. Max paused for a long moment, wondering if he should reveal the truth about his lack of hunting skills. Max leaned to the side, bumping his shoulder against hers. "Okay, so I might have lied about the hunting part. But let's keep that between you and me. And for the record, old canned food tastes like shit."

Riley looked at Max like she was mad at him for a second then burst out laughing. “You bet your ass it does!” She couldn’t imagine what old canned food must have tasted like. “Perishable food my tits am I right!?” She remembered getting into an old can of spaghetti-o’s. She felt sick for three days. That was only three bites! “Tell you what? Next time we get into a crisis..you do all the manly stuff..ex nay the hunting. Of course..I could teach you.” She narrowed her eyes. “But then I might get pissed off if you end up being better at it.”

She really was glad that she was working on this day. Max was kick ass. Sure people could be nice to everyone, but Riley actually could see herself hanging out with this guy. She may even lend him a few things here and there because she knew he was no snitch of the sorts. The therianthrope was actually a bit of a bitch before she was a person that proved she wanted a friendship. This was easily heading towards a friendship.

“So, you still have to entertain me with what you did before you got here. You can’t tell me you just were a can man all your life.”

"Oh, you would teach me, would you?" Max said, nudging her elbow with his. "I might have to take you up on that. I bet hunting would be a valuable trait at this point in case I get lost again." He was definitely amused by their conversation, and he couldn't say he knew whether or not her worry would become a reality. Max was good at picking up things once they were taught to him proper, but she had been doing it all her life. It was highful doubtful he'd get better at it than her. "You're probably safe there," Max added with a silly grin. "I don't think I can top someone who's been doing it their whole life."

Max laughed aloud and shook his head. "You know, a man's got to have his secrets," he said, cocking an eyebrow and crossing his arms over his chest. "Maybe I should save those stories for the next time we meet. I wouldn't want to spill all the juicy details too soon. Why, you'll lose interest and then where will I be? Out in the cold, holding out my shirt, freezing my pecks off, and wishing I had this badass hat." Max touched the rim of the hat with two fingers and ran them along the length of the material.

He shot her a cheeky grin. Yeah, he should save the rest of his life story for later. Besides, Max didn't talk about his personal life to people so easily. Even though she was nice, he wasn't ready to divulge that sort of information yet.

Riley could make a ‘deal’ about Max telling more and more about himself each time they met. She understood why it would be rather strange to tell all to a stranger. Well, she did it but she was a rather candid person who just about said everything and anything on her mind. But she would consider herself somewhat of an odd and rare breed. Not that it was a bad thing or anything.

“You know. I’d like to see you around here more often. Plus, considering I’m not going to actually make you give me your shirt and have the hat as a freebie, you have to at least come back to the gift shop and bring me something in return. That means we can talk more. If not the gift shop, we can chill somewhere else. If you like to drink and shit there are two places here. It’s getting cold out and I don’t feel like freezing my tits off so The Wine Bar would be best since it’s inside.” Riley felt like that was a fair offer. It wasn’t like she was a boring person to hang around with. Plus maybe Max would feel more comfortable and used to his surroundings.

“We could always chill out somewhere else. Depends on what places are your thing.”

Max grinned genuinely at Riley, kind of surprised that she would just let him have the hat without having to hand anything over today. Then again, she was a cool person and it wasn't that out of the ordinary for someone like her, he guessed. He definitely had to bring her something in return for the next time that they met. Max put a thoughtful look on his face and tapped his finger against his lips as he pondered the place of their next meeting. The Wine Bar sounded like as good a place as any, and an indoors bar sounded like just the ticket. He could grab a beer and relax in the company of a new friend as long as he didn't have to bother with anyone else. Max was a one-on-one type of person, and he didn't like being a part of a crowd of friends.

Getting up from the table, Max turned around to face Riley. He had just the plan. "How about we meet up this coming thursday at The Wine Bar after Halloween?" he offered, a crooked smile taking over his face. "They probably have some sort of festival thing going on for that," Max continued aimessly. "Unless you don't have anything planned for Halloween, though a pretty girl like you probably has something up her sleeve." Max tilted his head to the side. He raised his eyebrows. "We could met up for that if you don't." He sort of let it hang in the air, no sure what she would say.

Riley rarely ever gave shy smiles. She was the one who usually tried to provoke shyness in others. However in this case, her head motioned slightly towards the ground and perhaps a slight shade of pink colored her cheeks. “Thursday after Halloween sounds great.” She confirmed. “You know you should try to get yourself to go to the Hollow’s Eve festival. I could see you rockin’ some sort of costume” She teased. Teasing him a little got her blush to fade and she was able to look at him straight on.

“There is entertainment at the Wine bar and everything. Shall we say..eight or so?” Anytime in the night hours was convenient for her, but she wanted to make sure it was an alright time for Max. “I look forward to seeing you again.”

"Eh, we'll see about that," Max mentioned in regards to wearing a costume. He couldn't say costumes were really his type of thing, but it was possible he might wear one if it looked cool. Then again, it was more his style to show up looking as normal as possible. He liked looking normal. Like feeling normal, too. It was a great change from how he usually felt, and one night out of the year he wouldn't be the freak.

Shaking the thought out of his head, he sent a smile her way and nodded his head in agreement. "Thursday at eight it is," he said. He tipped his hat at her, fingers on the rim. "I'll see you then." With that, he turned around and left the Gift Shop, wondering in his head whether or not he'd actually run into her again when the time came up.

He'd find out then for sure.
