Who: Werewolves and anyone who wants to be outside the barrier
When: Before sunset and beyond
Where: North East of Helicharis (just beyond the Abandoned Elven Palace)
What: The werewolves let loose!
ooc: 1) Start sub-threads in this post by posting the name of all characters involved in the subject and the approximate time of night that particular scene is happening. 2) You can choose how your character arrived at the enclosure. 3) Don't forget to describe the character shifting and what they look like while shifted. 4) Don't forget that the transformation hurts unless you are used to it. 5) Lastly, have fun and go wild with it!

The forests all around Elysium were quiet as the sun began to descend toward the horizon. Animals locked themselves away in their homes, knowing what was to come within the next hour. They would stay there until the morning if they knew what was good for them, otherwise they could become victims for the lycans as they loped around the enclosure set aside just for them.

There was only a slight breeze tonight, bringing with it warm air from the South. The sky was overcast, blocking out the precious moon. But the werewolves didn't need to see the moon in order to feel its power. It wasn't like movies where a cloud traveling across the moon would halt the shifting of the lycanthropes. Nothing could stop their transformations tonight, and nothing would be able to contain the beasts they would become. It was the reason they were kept behind the magical barrier in the North Eastern part of the forest. Orc shamans and their powerful totems would be the guards tonight, using their magic to create the barrier between them and the rest of the haven. The werewolves would come to the barrier before the sun set, and enter its boundaries before they turned into their feral counterparts. Each lycan felt the call of the moon, and each one was waiting for the moment they could be free.

Fifteen shaman would be on guard tonight, using their ancient magic to create the invisible force field. Their power was more than enough to hold the lycanthropes inside. The barrier would keep the citizens of Elysium safe from the hungry lycanthropes until the first rays of the sun arose the next day.

Zach saw Adrienne up to the werewolf enclosure and parted with her as they prepared to erect the barrier for the night. He was here every full moon as always with the little whistle hanging around his neck. His hopes were to catch Adrienne once he had given her enough time to hunt as the wolf. He couldn't use the whistle too early, knowing she wouldn't be in the best of moods around that time. Instead, he sat himself down at the edge of the barrier, not far from other people. Friends and family often waited at the barrier for a while, sometimes hoping to see their loved one again to know that they were alright or to sleep out here until the morning and greet them.

Zach considered bringing out a tent for the night and putting it up, but he knew he'd probably head back home eventually and rest in his own bed. He'd wake up extra early to arrive at the barrier again before they took it down, waiting for Adrienne with a blanket, new clothes, and a first aid kit in case she needed it. He was afraid she'd get hurt with a few cuts and scrapes and wanted to have something on hand this time in case anything happened to her. Adrienne had been safe the last full moon, but Zach always thought about the time when she came out bleeding all over the place and it churned his stomach with sickness and his heart with pain. He liked being prepared ahead of time. It relaxed him to know that.

For now, he was just sitting by himself and fiddling with his notebook. He hadn't drawn anything in a long time, but with some encouragement from Logan, Zach decided to take up the task again. His pencil scratched across the paper, drawing a forest with a full moon above it. He drew the magical barrier that they couldn't see with the naked eye and began to doodle a figure. It was a werewolf, Adrienne, sitting on one side of the barrier. On the other side, he would draw himself, sitting cross-legged on the ground like he was right now and staring back at her.

It wouldn't be his best drawing yet, especially since he hadn't drawn anything real in months. It was a start, though.

Sascha could feel the barrier beneath his fingertips, solid and real and still as invisible to his eye as it had been during his first venture out to the werewolf enclosure several months prior. He'd taken to running his hand along the surface as he walked, looking a bit like a restless child as he dragged his fingers over the smoothness of the barrier to reassure himself that it was, in fact, still there.

He was much less anxious this time around, although he was still a little antsy about the prospect of seeing more lycans up close and personal. The last encounter had been slightly...terrifying, to say the least, and he definitely wasn't looking forward to any repeat performances. Of course, he was probably the ideal person to have in attendance should any weres look into getting overly feisty, but he'd prefer not to push himself too hard at the moment. His training with Theora during the last several weeks had been going well, and although he'd learned more than a few techniques for channeling and controlling his new abilities, the process had been fairly taxing on his mental reserves. He was still in the discipline stages.

The night air was chilly on his skin, and Sascha turned up the collar of his jacket to compensate for the fact that he'd pulled his hair back into a ponytail. He dug in his pocket with one hand in search of his rolling papers while still trailing the other hand along the barrier, smiling amusedly at the occasional blue sparks of energy that danced beneath his fingers from the continuous contact like static electricity. The dull murmuring of the group congregated nearby reached his ears as he approached, and eventually he could make out a few silhouettes through the trees. That was all well and good, of course, but Sascha highly doubted that any of the weres would approach an area so rife with humans- and he was here to talk to the weres, after all.

He paused at the edge of the clearing, squatting down with his back against the barrier as he rifled through his jacket pockets. Jesus, the night was only just beginning and he already needed a smoke. After finally locating the papers and loose tobacco inside his flannel (of course, where else would he have put it?), Sascha began the process of rolling up the cig using his thigh as a makeshift table. The relative silence had been weighing a little too heavily on him for comfort, and as he worked, he began to whistle the opening verses to an ironically appropriate CCR tune. I see a bad moon rising...

As the pencil scratched along the paper, Zach heard a faint tune being whistled nearby. He couldn't recognize the song, had trouble recognizing most songs these days from a lack of hearing them anymore. He spotted the figure responsible for the sound, though, and recognized the man right away. Last time he saw Sascha Connolly and had a real conversation with him, it was about a month ago and they hadn't had the best of times. Zach was still embarrassed by the situation of their encounter. Sascha catching Adrienne and Zach doing things they weren't supposed to be doing in the library had been branded in the boy's head along with the words Sascha left him with at the end. It had been an embarrassing thing all around, and Zach had never been sure of how to approach Sascha again after it.

Considering they weren't that far apart from each other now, Zach put down his pencil and stared out in the direction of where the other man sat on the ground. "Out here trying to talk to weres again?" Zach asked, his voice carrying across the distance between them to Sascha. His tone was neutral, and there wasn't any snark to be found in it. It was just an honest question. After all, that was what Sascha had been out here for every other time as well. Zach was wondering why Sascha sat with his back to the barrier, though, if that was his purpose. Maybe Sascha knew it would be awhile before they showed up, too.

He figured he would try to make some friendly conversation to make up for their last encounter. He hoped Sascha would try to forget it as much as Zach had been trying to do. "What are you singing?" he asked further, inquiring about the tune Sascha had actually been humming. Singing, humming. It was all the same or similar to Zach.

The question caught Sascha slightly by surprise, and he paused in the middle of rolling his cigarette to look up for the source- he'd recognize that voice anywhere. He blinked as he realized that he'd been crouched only a scant few yards away from the boy and hadn't even noticed him until now.

"Probably safe to say I'm not looking to pick up any dates," he returned with a smile, finishing up his cig and popping the stick between his lips before flicking open his lighter. "You smoke? I'll roll one for you, if you want." Sascha knew Zach didn't smoke, or at least, he'd never seen him so much as glance at a cigarette during the time he'd spent watching the younger man in his interactions with others (or stalking, as Irei liked to call it; personally, Sascha preferred the sound of something much less...incriminating.)

His stalkerish tendencies had fallen by the wayside recently, in part due to their confrontation in the library the previous month. Sascha remembered the words that had been exchanged all too clearly, and he was pleasantly surprised to see Zach approach him for a change, especially given how upset the boy had been with Sascha last they'd met. For whatever reason, Sascha had put a good deal of faith in Zach's ability to make logical judgments and evaluations; he may have been smack dab in the middle of his "rebellious" teen years, but he seemed like a smart kid overall.

"It's a Creedence Clearwater song, 'Bad Moon Rising.' Seemed like as good a time as ever for it," Sascha said by way of explanation, brushing the remnants of loose tobacco from his pants before pushing himself slowly to his feet and sauntering over beside Zach. He crouched tentatively next to his companion and examined the sketch on the drawing pad. "That's not half bad, I can actually see the resemblance. I didn't know you were an artist."

Sascha took another drag on his cigarette and turned away from Zach to exhale, waiting to see if Zach would broach the topic of their last encounter. It had been a month ago, of course, but Sascha wanted to make sure there was no lingering resentment between them; he really did like this kid, although sometimes in slightly less-than-appropriate ways. "Glad to see you're still talking to me, though. I should probably be grateful for that barrier, too- can't imagine your girlfriend would be thrilled to see me, and now's not exactly the best time to piss her off."

Zach and Sascha

The faintest of a smile crept its way onto Zach's face at Sascha's bit of a joke. Their confrontation had been long enough ago that someone like Zach was willing to let it go, especially since Sascha's interruption had ended with a very good point Zach hadn't made an attempt to consider until that moment. Zach certainly hadn't noticed anyone following him around, not Sascha or Hayate, and both men seemed to have a thing for following him around for whatever reasons known to them and them alone. Zach shook his head at Sascha's offer. He wasn't a smoker, and it wasn't a habit he was looking to pick up. "Nah, I don't smoke. Thanks, though." A friendly gesture was a friendly gesture.

He was still stuck in his rebellious teen years, but it didn't mean he was a complete idiot. Zach was a smart kid overall. If someone had something good to say and explained it properly, Zach generally got the picture, even if he didn't want to. It was true they hadn't spoken properly to each other for a long while, but Zach did have some issues to sort out. Even though he had sorted some out, new ones had cropped up and reared their ugly heads. The silver incident with Adrienne had only just happened, and it pained Zach just to think about why anyone would do a thing like that. It only brought the circle of vengeance right back to Simon, even though Zach was following his own advice and keeping his cool about the situation. They still had to talk to his grandma about it, and she'd been so busy yesterday and today.

Creedence Clearwater wasn't a band Zach had ever heard of, or maybe he'd heard of other people talking about them before. Zach wasn't sure. "Not really familiar with them," he answered, though the title of the song sounded like it was appropriate for the occasion. "You don't think anything bad is going to happen tonight, do you?" The fear suddenly crept up in him, but he pushed it aside and told it to go away.

He chewed on his lower lip after Sascha had come over to sit by him and commented on his drawing. "Not really," he said. "An artist, that is. I just draw occasionally. It's not a big hobby or anything." Like it was with his friend Logan.

Zach pressed his lips together firmly, though they were marked with a smile. "She's over it. It wasn't that big of a deal, but you did kind of hurt her feelings by embarrassing her. I was embarrased, too, but I might hold it against you for her reaction." He turned to Sascha to show off the more noticeable smile on his face. He was partly serious, but also partly joking.

"Things seem pretty calm tonight," Sascha murmured around the cigarette in his mouth, frowning slightly in concentration as he tried to send out some discreet mental radar across the surrounding area. "Haven't really felt any 'disturbances in the force,' if you will. It's a little more boring than I was hoping for, but that's probably a good sign." Somehow Sascha wasn't terribly surprised to hear that Zach didn't know of CCR, but he wasn't about to hold it against the boy. His companion didn't exactly strike him as the classic rock type, and the band was way before his time, anyway. For Zach's sake, though, he thought it better to avoid getting into the lyrics; they probably wouldn't be very reassuring given the occasion. I see trouble on the way, what?

Zach seemed pretty humble about his drawing abilities, but Sascha was still impressed by the fairly controlled lines of the sketch. True, he couldn't draw a straight line if his life depended on it, but that didn't mean he couldn't appreciate talent when he saw it- even modest talent. "You're probably more of an artist than you think, if that's what you do in your downtime. Maybe I oughtta commission you to draw something for me." He was actually considering it, too.

Sascha almost missed the smile on the younger man's face as he finished exhaling another lungful of smoke, but he caught the tell-tale quirk at the corner of the lips and returned the gesture with a great deal of relief. Good, no hurt feelings. "Send her my apologies, then. Wouldn't want any bad blood between us just because I was an asshole that one time." He winked teasingly at Zach. "And keep it in mind next time you start feelin' frisky in the library."

The grin on Sascha's face faded just a bit as he regarded his younger counterpart, absentmindedly flicking the ashes from the end of his cigarette. "You really love her, don't you?" he ventured softly, apparently undaunted by the suddenly sober nature of their conversation. "Not that it's hard to tell. You two remind me a lot of me and my girl, back when we first met. I was only a few years older than you, actually." It felt strange to be confiding his past to the object of his all-too-recent obsessions, it really did, but something had shifted in the way Sascha viewed the other man- other boy, if he wanted to be totally honest. He could see the impatience and awkwardness of youth in Zach's behaviors, but he could also see the marks of maturity and selflessness that proved he was well on his way to adulthood. Occasionally Zach could be reckless, but what kid wasn't at some point? And hadn't he been young and in love once himself?

"What I said before...I didn't mean for it to sound so >heavy, I just wanted you to understand. Watch out for her, but watch out for yourself, too, y'know?" Sascha caught Zach's eye as he spoke, trying to convey his seriousness without sounding preachy or heavy-handed. "I know how you feel though, wanting to protect her- hell, any guy would." The smile resurfaced then, and he took another drag before offering his next question. "Think she's the one?"

As Zach looked back down at his notebook and carefully sketched a remainder of the forest background in the picture, he slowly nodded his head. "I'll do that," he said lightly, referring to sending Adrienne Sascha's apologies. He found the corner of his mouth curling up again as Sascha mentioned it had only been one time. It was only one time, but still, it was an extremely vivid one time. Zach paused with his pencil and glanced up at Sascha just in time to see the wink. With an assured look on his face, Zach gave the older man an 'I dunno' look and cocked his head to the side. "I guess we'll see about that," Zach said, a vague sense to his words. Meaning he was probably thinking about doing it again, only much more carefully next time. And maybe when there aren't so many people around. And maybe when Sascha was definitely off-duty.

A solemn atmosphere fell upon the air at Sascha's new question. Zach's pencil gently tapped once against the notebook in his lap as it lowered in his grasp and touched the paper. He seemed to be mulling over the question, but he wasn't mulling it over. Zach already knew the answer to it. He was just a little protective, plus a little secretive, regarding admitting his feelings out loud. Zach wasn't entirely used to it yet, save with Adrienne alone. Admitting it to other people felt uncomfortable as if it was private information he didn't want to share, even if it was as obvious in his eyes as daylight shining through a window.

He was young, and he knew that much. Sometimes it made him question if he knew what he was talking about or even feeling, but he told himself he needed to stop doing that. Just because he was young didn't mean he couldn't understand what being in love felt like, and it certainly didn't mean he couldn't experience it himself. "I do," he admitted softly, raising his eyes to meet the older man's gaze.

Zach didn't say anything, only nodded his head. He knew what Sascha had meant by it, and the other man didn't have to explain it again to him. The light tone and kindness, though, was really appreciated. "I know," Zach said. He smiled, then, when Sascha said any guy would want to protect the one they loved. At least that was how Zach took it.

Sascha's next inquiry might have caught Zach somewhat off-guard, though not in a bad way. He was quiet for a long moment, staring ahead at the barrier. Zach chewed on his bottom lip in silence, finally looking down at the paper again to see the sketch of him and Adrienne he had drawn.

"I guess that depends what you mean by 'the one,'" Zach ventured to say, glancing up Sascha, "and what you believe in. Say . . . there's one person out there for you, meant for you, maybe even made for you, and you made for them in . . . a way that no one else is?"

"Is that what you believe?" There was no condescension in his voice, only curiosity. It was ironic, in a way; for all the external information he'd gleaned from secretly following the young man around, the one thing he'd never had any access to had been Zach's mind. And here he was, a telepath. Funny.

It had been a good long while since Sascha had discussed anything remotely philosophical, and his mind jumped eagerly at the chance for some real dialogue. He listened to Zach's explanation carefully before responding. "I take it you're thinking along the line of...soulmates, am I right? Something fated?" A quiet smile touched his lips as he inhaled another lungful of smoke and languidly expelled it.

"I think...what I think," and here he leaned forward to prop his elbows on his knees before starting again, "what I think...is that sometimes a person will find himself in the right place, at the right time, with the right person...and things just happen. Without control. You can call it fate if you want, and maybe it is, or maybe it's just a random combination of factors. The point is, it's a combination that works." His fingers picked idly at some of the loose threads in the holes in his jeans. "I think people can be compatible in more ways than any fucking personality test could ever measure. Not that compatability equals love, necessarily, but sometimes it helps."

Sascha's eye landed again on the drawing in Zach's lap. "When I say the one, I guess what I really mean is...the one right now, since now is all you can really know, anyway. You can say that it will last forever, or that you'll try to make it last, but who really waits forever? Hell, sometimes tomorrow isn't even what you hope it will be- after all, we ended up in this place, didn't we? Bet no one saw that coming." Except for maybe the psychics. Something in his chest tightened painfully as he thought of Annie then, and he ducked his head slightly to shield his eyes from the younger man. Vulnerable was still a look he didn't pull off well. "Sometimes tomorrow doesn't ever come."

Sascha was aware that he was speaking very abstractly at this point, and he was probably rambling, too. He levelled his gaze at Zach and continued on with a more upbeat lilt to his voice. "I don't know if there's really one perfect person out there for everyone, but I know that if you're lucky, something will work out...even if it's only for a little while. I think happy endings are pretty much bullshit, though." Amazingly, he managed to say this with a smile.

"On some level, I do believe in soulmates. Have you ever heard of the term 'Anam Cara'? In the Celtic tradition, when your soul connects with another- someone that really understands you and accepts your innermost self- it's said that you've found your Anam Cara, your 'Soul Friend.' It's not always a lover; sometimes it's a very close friendship, and sometimes you have more than one." He leaned down to crush out the smoldering butt of his cigarette and then dropped the nub into a bag in his jacket pocket. "According to the Irish, once you've found your Anam Cara, you've arrived at the most sacred place: home." He watched Zach intently, not speaking aloud but letting his eyes encourage the younger man to share his own perspective.

Zach drew together his eyebrows as he wondered if he should answer Sascha's question. Sometimes Zach wasn't entirely sure what he believed deep inside of his head, and it was hard to sort it all out at times. For some reason, delving too deep into feelings and emotions was something that made Zach uncomfortable. It wasn't something he just did when he had nothing else to do, and it wasn't something he ever really thought about in any given moment.

He pondered it for a few seconds, frowning slightly as he thought about it. "Not something fated," Zach said. "Just something natural, like it's a law. Sort of like the law of gravity, only it pertains to people." He gazed over at Sascha and listened to the man as he spoke, running the other man's words through his own head. "So, it's all just random to you?" Zach asked, a clearly neutral tone in his voice. He wasn't sure what he expected from Sascha on the topic, but he didn't really think he ever expected anything in particular.

Zach pursed his lips as he stared off in the darkness and tilted his head to the side. Sascha made a good point, but he also left out something very important. "People saw this coming," he said, smiling somewhat in a way that maybe Sascha couldn't see unless he was looking for it on Zach's face. "Maybe not everyone, but a lot of people never open their minds to the possibility of the future. They don't consider it or don't try to make it. Forget the psychics, but anyone can see the future if they really want to."

Zach believed strongly in responsibility of the individual, not in fate. As a result, bad things only happened if you let them happen and you could truly shape your future to be whatever you wanted it to be. You just had to take responsibility for your faults and failures and try to make things better. "Everyone's held accountable for their actions," Zach said. "You're responsible for what happens to you. Not every factor. There are things that happened out of your control, but how you deal with them . . . well, that's up to you. And it'll shape your entire life."

The younger man smiled and didn't say anything about no such thing as happily ever afters. Zach really didn't know what he believed when it came to that sort of thing. He shook his head at Sascha's new question. "No, never heard of it." He listened with interest as Sascha explained it, though. Home. Zach swallowed a small lump in his throat and glanced down at his sketch. He'd felt that feeling before. With his family, his best friend, and with Adrienne.

"Something natural...I think I know what you mean." Sascha had trained his eyes on Zach's face as he listened to the younger man speak, but occasionally his gaze would wander to some unseen point just beyond Zach's shoulder as he turned over the words in contemplation.

"No, not everything is random. But timing practically is everything, wouldn't you say?" His dark eyes darted back to Zach's, searching. "Just think for a minute, about how the two of you met. Don't you ever wonder: if you hadn't been in that place at that particular time...would you still have met? If you'd been, say, halfway across the world instead, and you'd met someone there at that exact moment, would you be with that person instead of her? Or is she the one that's really made for you, like you said? Is that fate? Or natural law? Or just...good timing?"

Sascha shook his head and brushed a few wayward bangs from his eyes. "Not that any of this is all that important when you get right down to it. The point isn't why or even how it happened so much as where does it go from here?" A hint of a smile ghosted over his lips at the remark. "You've got each other right now, so just make the best of every moment. Things won't stay the same forever, believe me."

He was a little taken aback at Zach's statement about the future, although the words definitely gave him pause. Sascha had certainly never anticipated anything that had come to pass over the last few months, but he'd also never encountered another praeternatural (that he was aware of, anyway) aside from Irei. Things existed in this world that he'd never even dared to imagine, but it was obvious that not everyone shared in his obliviousness- how else could this haven have ever come into being without the foresight and preparation of so many? "Damn, I must have hung out with the wrong crowd," he said as he stretched his legs out in front of him to encourage more circulation. "If you'd asked me where I'd be a year or so ago, this place would have been the furthest thing from my mind."

Sascha shook his head again as Zach spoke about personal accountability, and he tried to keep the indulgent smile on his face. "I don't disagree with you there, my friend. Your words and actions are pretty much the only things you can control in this world. Shit happens, obviously-" his voice went a little flat at the statement as it seemed obscenely obvious given their current circumstances- "and the way you react to it determines a whole hell of a lot."

There was a lull in the conversation for several moments as Sascha tried to work the right words around in his mind, and he scratched the back of his head in a nervous gesture. "But...sometimes you give yourself a little too much credit when it comes to controlling things, because you've probably got a lot less control than you'd like to admit. And sometimes..." he paused again, this time scratching his chin and letting his fingers stroke idly at his beard. "Sometimes your life is made up of all the things you didn't do, or the choices you didn't make. You've heard of John Lennon, right?" Sascha smiled at the utter cheesiness of his penchant for collecting quotes. "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

"Well, people can meet in a bunch of different ways," Zach said, glancing over at Sascha. "I mean, there isn't just one way to meet a person. Sure, we met at a very specific place and time, but if we hadn't met there, who's to say we wouldn't have met here a few months later?" Zach shrugged his shoulders. "I guess I believe there isn't really such a thing as good timing. If you meet someone and they're right for you, you drop everything else and go for them. I could have ended up with another girlfriend, but it's entirely possible I would have broken up with her the second I met Adrienne." He'd seen so many movies where people felt obligated to stay with their current boyfriend or girlfriend. Zach never understood those people. If you found a special connection with someone, you didn't hang on to something that rang hollow in comparison.

"I don't stay in places where I'm unhappy. If I'm unhappy, I let go." Zach didn't know what to say about things not staying the same forever. He believed things would stay however he wanted them to stay when all was said and done. Zach didn't need to be told he would move on one day. He'd figure it out for himself if he ever got there.

A small huff of amusement echoed in Zach's throat along with a light smirk across his face. "This place would have been the furthest from my mind, too." Zach never expected to end up here, obviously, but here is where he ended up.

He had to give pause for a moment to consider Sascha's words. "I don't have control over what happens all of the time, but I have control over what I do from there. Isn't that really all of the control a person needs?" All sorts of bad things could happen, and Zach could imagine them all. How he lived his life afterwards, though, that was the real test of virtue. Zach could choose his path even after that. "'The greatest lie,'" Zach quoted, "'is believing that at some point in our lives we lose control of what's happening and our lives become controlled by fate.' We never really lose full control, not unless we're chained up to a brick wall somewhere in a dungeon." He laughed, then. "You can't control that shit. Unless you're Houdini."

Zach and Sascha (Wow, sorry about that...r/l's a beach. >.<)

Sascha had never been an overly cynical person- it just wasn't his style. Mostly mellow and low-key (although occasionally excitable given the right conditions), his relative optimism had been a target of suspicion for several of his colleagues and acquaintances throughout the years. His own background and family history had been fairly angsty, and some people wondered how he didn't appear more negatively affected. Truth be told, it was equal parts personality (he'd always been a cheerful little bastard) and sheer determination; when you didn't have much to start with, you learned to appreciate the little things.

Which was why, as he listened to Zach speak, he was startled to realize just how naive the younger man's words sounded to his ears. When the hell had he become so jaded? Hadn't he always loved and reveled in the idealism of youth? Wasn't it precisely that kind of idealism that had led him to his beloved profession and his passion for the literature that had shaped so much of his life? Maybe it was life itself that had triggered this shift- life and experience. And maybe it wasn't bitterness so much as resigned acceptance, although Sascha thought he was way too damn young to have reached that point. He only hoped that maybe Zach wouldn't have to go through any of life's particular cruelties, at least beyond what he might have already experienced.

"I feel like half of my life's been the result of good timing," he said with a half-smile, threading his fingers behind his back and stretching his arms. "But I'll concede to some of your point, at least." Sascha glanced over at Zach with a twinkle in his eye, thoroughly amused at his companion's reference of choice. "And that sounds ironically appropriate coming from...an alchemist, isn't it?" They'd never talked at length about their respective abilities- hell, they'd never really talked at length about anything- but Sascha still had the pair of cuffs Zach had given to him several months prior (was even wearing one at the moment), and they served as constant reminders of the younger man's gift.

Sascha had said his piece, and he watched Zach for several moments in contemplative silence before looking in the direction of the barrier. He still hadn't felt any of the familiar pulses of canine psychic energy in his mind, so it stood to reason that no weres had approached the threshold while they'd been locked in discussion. It felt good to have a genuine conversation with the boy, but Sascha had spent too much time carrying the topic of conversation; now it was Zach's turn.

Zach probably did sound very much his age. He tended to be a bit naive for the most part, if only because the experiences he faced weren't as mind-wrecking as they could have been. His life, while fueled with elements of sadness, hadn't been complete gloom and doom. Through that, the young man was able to still find hope and positive energy. There was no telling where the future might bring him, but he hadn't become that jaded as a result of his past. He'd been growing positively into an adult world instead of the other way around. It was his childhood that had been hell for him, not the later years.

He couldn't help but laugh just a little. "Yeah, an alchemist quoting The Alchemist. Very ironic," Zach admitted with a smile. It amused him as well, to say the least. It was one of his favorite books ever since Adrienne introduced it to him.

Zach wasn't sure what else to say, though. He was out here waiting for Adrienne to show up, and maybe Sascha could say hello to her again as well. For now, there was a little bit of peaceful silence before the night was through.

Charlie and Echo

2008-11-01 11:00 am UTC (link)
Echo had heard about weres changing on the full moon tonight and she decided that she wanted to go to see them. Charlie was to be her companion for this mission, because spending more time with him was always good and she could cling to him if things got a little scary. She knew that this was dangerous and she figured that climbing a tree might provide the two of them with safety. Slipping on her jacket, she left the cottage with him and reached out her hand to take his. "This will be so cool," she said excitedly. "To see, I mean, because becoming all hairy and stuff is really painful, I'd think. Okay, so we stay long enough to see someone change and then we go?"

She increased her pace, swinging their hands a little, and grinned. "We're awesome adventurers, don't you think?" The walk to the right area would take a while and she figured they'd arrive at sunset. Excitement pumped through her veins and she squeezed Charlie's hand to let him know. "I know weres are people, but I'd love to be able to see more magical animals! Or just more interesting races, because I haven't seen that many different people and I want to expand my horizons, you know? And I don't think many people are able to say they've kissed a hot therianthrope." This brought an important question to mind and she had to ask, because it pestered her for a while.

"Can I say it? That you're my boyfriend?" she wondered. "I mean, if you're not, or don't want to be, just tell me. I'd really like you to be, but um, I know it's weird with us living in the same place. And yeah." There had better not be another girl who had caught his eye, because that would break Echo's heart. She had no idea what to do or what she was doing, but she did know that spending time with him made her happy. Worried now, Echo let go of Charlie's hand and let her arm drop to her side.

Charlie and Echo, and Open! (maybe a werewolf can make an appearance)

Charlie had wanted to go see the werewolves for a while now. It was something that had caught his interest ever since he arrived at the haven. Plus, it would be safe for him to see them (up close hopefully) since they would be behind a barrier. It almost felt like they were at some sort of interactive zoo thing, but then the thought made him feel bad because it degraded what the werewolves were. They weren't there to be on display, but his thoughts had made them that way.

He dismissed the thoughts, focusing rather on the fact that he was going to spend time with Echo on their awesome adventure. "Yeah, we are totally awesome," he said squeezing her hand. Charlie wasn't sure what to say to the rest of her words because Echo, like his sister, talked a lot. Even with Chris, Charlie was more of a listener than a participant, and he found himself doing that a lot with Echo. Hopefully, she didn't get the wrong idea from it.

They arrived at the barrier before sunset, but all of the lycanthropes had gone to private places to shift. They probably wouldn't see one shifting, but maybe they would see one later on. He hoped so. Of course, all thoughts of werewolves flew out of his brain when Echo mentioned boyfriend. Charlie blinked at her, wondering what he was supposed to say in a time like this. He managed a smile, and slowly his head began to nod. "Yeah... as long as I can call you my girlfriend," was his reply before he reached down to take a hold of Echo's hand again. Wow, he officially had a girlfriend now, and he wondered what his sister would say about that.

Charlie was quiet, but most people were when they were talking to her and that didn't bother her now. The squeezing of her hand was a comfort, so she gave him another smile. It was a shame that they saw no one yet. Just a matter of time. She thought that it was best to get to a nearby tree to scout around for people, though thinking about Charlie as a boyfriend - hers! - was much more important right now. "Of course!" Lunging toward him, she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed his cheek. "You don't know how happy that makes me."

There was a small bounce in her step as she headed towards a suitable tree and began to climb it to a height to give them a decent view and safety. "Come on!" she said quietly and gestured for him to follow her. She settled on a branch, now more giddy than ever as she laid a hand on the trunk to keep her balance, and her heart pounded with excitement at his proximity. He sat next to her and she reached to take his hand again. Hand-holding was something very couple-y and even more wonderful than she thought. "What if they can jump this high to get at us? Lord, that'd be scary!"

Charlie and Echo, and Sydni (sorry for the delay!)
[info]runasone

The hug was unexpected, but not unwanted. Charlie grinned broadly, hugging her back while her arms were wrapped around his neck. The kiss to his cheek made him blush, but he quickly regained his composure by clearing his throat. He smiled at Echo, not sure what to say in response to her statement. Charlie let out an embarrassed 'heh', his hand reaching around the back of his neck to rub it. He had never been in a situation like this before, so he really didn't know how to act. He kept smiling like a fool, though, and followed her lead when she found a tree for them to climb.

Charlie let Echo climb the tree first. If she fell, then he'd be able to catch her, but she was a good climber and Charlie didn't have a thing to worry about. She had found a sturdy branch for the both of them, and he settled down next to her. Echo immediately took his hand into hers, and Charlie blushed (again!). Warmth spread throughout his body, and he smiled a bit awkwardly at Echo.

She started talking about the barrier, and truthfully Charlie didn't know if the werewolves could jump over it. He always thought it was like a dome barrier, that was covered all the way around. He shrugged, eyes trained on the forest on the other side of the invisible force field. "I don't think they can jump that high," he said, trying to reassure Echo. "I mean, at least I hope they can't."

((No worries))

It had been a horrible day all day. It was her birthday, and while Sydni did not generally make a fuss about it, it had always been nice to have the well-wishes, and her mother had always made a fuss about it. No one here (well, save one person) knew about her birthday. No well-wishes, no birthday cake, just full moon mood-swings and furry PMS. Wonderful.

Like some of the other lycans, Sydni had arrived early to find a hiding place to strip and wait for the change. She knew how much it hurt, but that was never her main fear. Like getting a tattoo, it only really hurt while it happened, and then only for a short time afterward. She was only concerned that she would find some break in the barrier and hurt someone. Or that someone would have gotten in and... The mages and other magically inclined people knew what they were doing. She needed to stop worrying.

Finally, it happened. The brunette stopped her pacing, and looked up toward the sky. It started slowly at first - a few twinges here and there - then it sped up. Bones cracking, snow white fur sprouting from her skin, fingers, toes, and snout elongating. Sydni had been through enough of these changes to keep relatively quiet, but she always screamed at th end - a scream that turned into a howl. She was a striking figure in her shifted state - her entirely white coat practically glowed in the dark forest, and the silence and grace with which she moved could be almost startling to anyone who knew her well.

Almost immediately, her feral mind was hunting. It was difficult to function like this. Her conscious mind was still there, but it could not interpret the signals it was receiving properly, so it was easier to follow instinct. But there was always that initial struggle.

Picking up the scent of some prey animal, the lycan started off. It wasn't long before she could see the deer. It was a large animal, comparatively. Probably something more often hunted by a pack. But Sydni had no pack, and she needed to eat. Moving cautiously, she crept closer to the animal, stalking it. She was very close by the time her ghostly white coat gave her way, and as the dexterous animal bounded away, the predator made quick pursuit. On clear ground the deer would be doomed, and it made the unfortunate mistake of bounding into a clearing. With a leap, Sydni clamped her jaws down on its neck and gave a quick shake. The snap could easily be heard by those close by. It was a quick death. Perhaps her compassionate conscious mind was still influencing her actions in some way. Of course, it was safer to kill quickly. Struggling prey could injure a predator.

Sensing something not of the forest, the lycan looked up and growled. There were two figures in a tree nearby. Crouching low over her kill, she watched the intruders carefully. She hadn't determined yet if they were a threat.

Echo was more than happy about what had just happened between her and Charlie and was content to sit in silence until she saw something near their tree. Her grip on Charlie's hand tightened as she realized what it was. The sudden clash between the animals startled her and she bit her lip when the lycan killed the deer. The poor animal, she thought, shifting ever so closer to her boyfriend. She didn't want Charlie to transform in case they needed to escape because he might be attacked just like the deer was.

That couldn't happen. She held her breath as the were looked at them. It was almost as if she was staring into a tidal wave that was about to come crashing over her. Nothing was going to happen to her, right? She tried to think positively even though her heart was beating quickly. "Oh, Lord," she breathed. Was Charlie as frightened as she was? Maybe she was just being silly, but a lycan staring at them should have unnerved anyone. She was afraid to speak any more in case that triggered the creature's anger and made them want to attack.

Thank goodness they were on the other side of the barrier - the safe side of the barrier - when the werewolf made its kill. Charlie watched in wonder, eyes wide with amazement as his mouth gaped open. This was so freaking awesome! It was like watching the Animal Planet up close and personal! He almost wished he had brought some binoculars along so he could see the blood up close!

Being fascinated by the sight before them was a typical boy trait. It wasn't that Charlie was a violent person; far from it! He was actually pretty peaceful, but he did enjoy the occasional display of testosterone and aggression. He enjoyed playing hack-and-slash video games, or first-person shooters where you have to annihilate the zombies or aliens. And if there was blood splattering everywhere? Yep, that was always a plus in a boy's book.

He leaned forward a little up until the moment the lycanthrope turned and stared at them. It even growled at them, and Charlie held onto Echo's hand a little bit tighter. "Holy crap, that's freaky," he said. It's ice cold eyes felt like it was boring a hole through his skull, and it sent shivers down his spine. He offered up a weak smile at it, though, and then leaned in toward Echo. "Don't worry," he whispered. "It can't get through the barrier." Charlie was sure of this fact, and that settled down his rapidly beating heart.

Then, in an impulsive move, Charlie waved at the werewolf. He wasn't sure if it even understood what a wave was, but he did it anyway. Like a little kid at a zoo that waved at the lions or tigers, Charlie waved at the werewolf, and smiled.

Display of testosterone? Sydni would have been insulted. This was pure female rage. Nothing like a woman scorned. Or on the hunt, in any case.

The lycan sniffed the air; she could smell fear. Rather, the hormones associated with fear. In her predator's brain, it made sense; the female was letting the male be the defender. Giving a huff, she seemed decided that the two were not a threat, and she ceased growling so she could nose at her prey, but the quick movement of the wave caught her eye. And she didn't like it. Lunging forward, she growled and snarled, crouching just in front of her prey. Her fur raised up, making her appear larger, and her hunched form gave her the appearance of even more bulk. Of course, her white coat brilliantly displayed the crimson stains of blood around her muzzle.

From repeated testing of the barrier, even her feral form knew it was a futile attempt to try and cross it. After a moment, she backed up again, and seizing the deer in her mouth, began to drag it backward toward the cover of trees. These intruders might not have been a threat, but that didn't mean she liked the audience. She continued to growl low, though.

Somewhere behind the feral mind, the sentient one gave a sigh of relief. It was difficult to keep the beast in line. Even thought it had been an impressive display, it was just that. The wolf had no intention of harming either of the humans, even with all its posturing. The woman's human side had seen to that.

How was Charlie able to enjoy this? Echo was so frightened even though she tried to take his word for it that the barrier would hold. Anything could happen, though, and she clung to his hand in fear. His presence comforted her - half of her didn't want to see any more violence, but saying that was silly. "What're you doing?" she whispered frantically as he waved. "Maybe you'll upset them!" Who knew what angered the weres? The thrill of fear struck her. The lycanthrope was awfully close and she had an idea.

"I dare you to stand right outside the barrier and look at them straight in the eye." He had plenty of reasons to say no, but she thought he was adventurous enough to accept her challenge. She met his eyes and smiled.

How was Charlie able to enjoy this? Simple - he was a boy. It seemed like such a natural thing for him to like since it was a display of aggression, and men usually gravitated towards it. It was something left over from when humans were still cave men, or at least that's what Charlie had learned in one of his classes. It seemed like a perfectly reasonable explanation to the young man, especially since this was like any other testosterone filled activity except he was up close and personal.

He smiled over at Echo and stopped waving. Apparently, Echo wasn't a fan like he was. "It can't do anything to us," Charlie said as he squeezed her hand. "I mean we're here on this side, and they're there on that side. Besides, that one looks busy with food anyway. It probably doesn't even care that we're here."

Echo's challenge definitely caught Charlie's interest, and as a boy it was his moral imperative to accept it. Not only could he not show fear while in front of a girl, but she had directly challenged him. Had Charlie shrunk away from the idea everyone in Elysium would have called him a wuss! There was no way he was going to let that happen.

"Sure," he said with a slight shrug of his shoulders. He made it seem like it wasn't that big of a deal despite the fact that his heart was beating about a hundred miles a minute. He slid off the branch of the tree and hung there for a few seconds before he dropped to the ground. It wasn't that far of a drop, and he landed easily in a crouch. The young therianthrope stood up and walked over toward the invisible barrier. He gulped quietly but kept moving toward it. Charlie was scared even though he knew that the barrier kept him safe. He held a hand out in front of him to gauge his distance, and when his fingertips felt something hard he knew he reached the barrier.

He stood there quietly and stared at the werewolf. He didn't glare or make any rude gestures at it. He just stared and waited anxiously to see if the lycanthrope would do anything. If it didn't, he would just return to the tree victorious. Somewhere deep down Charlie hoped the werewolf didn't charge the barrier - though he was protected he wasn't sure if he'd want to be that close to something that could eat him.

The lycan watched the humans from the shadows of the trees. She could catch snatches of their conversation, but most of it didn't matter to her. What she could sense, was a challenge. Her feral mind recognized that. The female challenging the male? Well, it happened in the lycan world, but she knew that the male had to reassert himself or resign himself to submission. Unconcerned with the human interaction, the lycan went back to her meal. Until she felt eyes upon her.

Growling low in her throat, she kept her eyes on the young man. Crouching low over her kill, she set her arms in front of it, a barrier between the 'human' and the prey. He was getting too close to being threatening. Time to assert herself. With a growling yell, she charged forward. He had better back off. Though, she knew where the barrier was, and stopped short just in front of it, standing to her full height. It wasn't as impressive, perhaps, as other lycans, as she wasn't overly tall to begin with. However, she was probably taller than the young man. Add to that the fact that if f the barrier weren't there, he would have felt her breath on his skin, and it probably was rather impressive.

While it was impressive that Charlie had accepted her challenge and then proceeded to stand in front of the barrier, Echo wasn't sure how well it would hold up. She didn't want him to get hurt - magic was cool and everything, but she still feared it would break in the back of her mind. This was more than she could bear and she moved to the ground to stand behind Charlie, tugging at his arm. "Let's go, okay?" she whispered. She might have put on a brave face, but truth of the matter was that she had never been more afraid than she was at the moment.

She took his hand and pulled him back in the direction from which they came, increasing her pace until it was almost a run. When they were a safe enough distance away, she wrapped her arms around him for a tight hug. "Wow, you're really brave," she said with a small appreciate smile. "I was just worried. I still am. I don't want to be there when the barrier breaks." She stepped back from him, taking his hand again so they could go back to the forest cottage.

Katy Wilson and (open or narrative)
[info]beneaththeskin
2008-11-02 10:01 am UTC (link)
Katy stepped off the carriage feeling anxious and full of nervous energy. She would normally pet the horse that had dropped her off, but she did not want to scare the poor animal. Back on her ranch her father had kept a couple of horses; one of which had basically become hers. She had loved that animal, but after becoming a lycan she was never able to go anywhere near him anytime around the full moon. The poor animal would become stressed a thrash within its stall because it could sense the wolf laying in wait within her. After her first year as a werewolf, she had her father had come to the conclusion it would be best to sell the horses to give them a new home. It was just one more way her human life had changed after becoming lycan.

Katy had brought with her a bag containing a change of clothes for after the night was over and any other supplies she might need. Without her brother and father being with her anymore, she had to become used to changing alone. She had already done the deed a few times, but she couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret as she watched the families waiting outside the barrier for the night to be over and give their loved ones back. There would be no one waiting for Katy.

She left her bag with one of the medical personal who would also be waiting for the night to end before stepping within the barrier. So many people were gathered and focused on the people who would be come wolves. She didn’t really like the idea that they would be watching her in a most vulnerable moment. Katy never liked letting people see any of her own weakness. She moved into the cover of the trees and sighed.

She felt the beginning of the change and she shut her eyes as her muscles tensed against the now familiar pain. She had changed almost a hundred times already, but the shock and pain of changing form for the night would still make her scream. She shed her clothes quickly (she hadn’t bothered with a bra tonight), and she had wisely left her favorite jewelry back at the house she occupied. Her mother’s wedding ring locked inside the beautiful jewelry box she had acquired in Sorrento when she had visited Italy.

She clutched at her head and looked back in the direction of the barrier. It was like seeing the world through red tinted glasses and she screamed. It was like her blood was boiling as her outside changed into the animal that always seemed to simmer beneath her skin. She could feel all of it. The hair growing on her arms, legs, body, everywhere...And her teeth, her canines lengthened as he jaw reorganized itself to look more like the muzzle of a wolf. The scream turned into a howl as she through her head back, letting what would be an eery, haunting sound to those near the barrier. She ripped off anything else that might have been on her body as the change became complete.

With eyes Katy’s hazel eyes now hidden behind the wolf’s icy blue irises, the freed animal stood up and sniffed the air. It didn’t waste anytime as it bolted off deeper into the trees. It wanted to hunt and it could smell meat.
