Who: Max & Sanura
When: Late Night
Where: Sanura and Adio's Cottage
What: A thief on a hot tin roof . . . gets caught.

Max’s first two days here were as weird as shit falling out of the sky from a monkey’s ass. One day, life was perfectly normal and everything made sense. Right up until some master virus decided to rear its head and wipe out humanity with one fell swoop. If that wasn’t all, a world war was waged over it. Max made it through his days by hiding out in a remote cabin in Italy while he was on a vacation in Europe. Honestly, this wasn’t how he expected it to end — washed up on a shore in a weird fucking place like this. How did this place even exist?

Today, he was living in a fantasy world à la video games of World of Warcraft or some sort of The Lord of the Rings book. The only way to feel like he was normal again and alive in some sensible meaning of the word was to do what he was used to doing. That included sneaking around in the middle of the night, his extra-sensitive eyes picking up everything in his surroundings. He was dressed completely in black, even had a cap pulled over his head. Max was looked for a place to break into — not because he wanted to steal anything, but because it was the only way for him to feel like he was really alive right now and actually living this freak of nature existence. Also, to feel normal again. Like he was ever normal in the first place.

His eyes settled on one house in particular. It looked homey. Everyone appeared to be asleep. There were no lights on inside. Glancing around outside, Max made sure no one was around and watching him. Once he saw that the coast was clear, Max made a run for it and reached the house.

He liked a challenge, so the first thing he did for no special reason was to climb up the side of the house. Max used the windows and the interesting little nooks on the structure to make his way up, trying to be as quiet as possible. He could have gone straight for a window, but instead Max wanted to sneak his way onto the roof. His hand slipped, but he snagged a fixture on the window protruding from the roof and pulled himself up. Shoes scraped against the side of the cottage as he climbed upward, and finally, Max settled himself atop the window on the roof. With a leg on either side of the protruding window structure, Max sat atop the house and gazed outward at the landscape.

The air smelled fresher up here, and he liked that.

Sanura’s house would have actually been a thief’s wet dream. Though money was worth nothing in Elysium, trade was. She and Adio had many artifacts and gifts from South Africa that possessed great personal value to them. Of course they never took the actual value into consideration. What did it matter? They didn’t plan on trading any of the things many would consider quite expensive.

The inside of the cottage was very nicely designed. Sanura was quite the designer if she could say so herself. She had nice undertones of maroon with simple white and she made the matching curtains herself with help from Kazuki. The Therianthrope even painted over the desks and drawers with darker colors and custom handles. Sanura was intent on making the cottage feel like home and when she had her freak out after the dead animals, she had a lot of time to fix up the cottage and make the place one hell of a place to stay at. It was a wonderful time to set out their antiques and other valuables they still had packed.

Along the cottage walls, Sanura had paintings from back home neatly placed. They were art pieces from when she was a child. The frames themselves had a handsome price attached. The rugs on the floor were Persian and the cloth protecting the wood service from hot and cold drinks had gold thread weaved through it.

In various rooms there were figurines Sanura had growing up of safari animals. They were gold covered and now valuable. There were porcelain kitchen sets..and Sanura’s clothes? That was a whole ‘don’t ask’ sort of thing. The bracelets on her wrists given to her by her late father that she never took off were worth well into the thousands. Her name was engraved into some of them and one of the bracelets had a 10 karat gold flower on. It was a miracle she got so much crap into Elysium. Many thanks was to the scouts and her brother joining her.

The Therianthrope was lying in bed reading a novel that was beginning to bore her. One of those books that had predictable plot twists. Sighing, she rose to her feet and walked towards the bathroom beginning to undress. It was then she heard a noise and she stopped dead in her tracks, half naked. “Adio?” she set a hand on her hip, lips pursed in annoyance. “Did you not close the door all the way? I hate when you do that!”

She walked slowly to where Adio slept and saw he was sound asleep. She heard another noise and for some reason her body shivered in discomfort. She didn’t take into account that she was half dressed. Was there someone in her house? Maybe it was something freaky because it was Halloween. Either way she needed to make sure she got down to figuring it out with or without her brother. It was totally going to be without her brother since he was out cold.

Sanura's hands shakily reached out to grab a bat she set by her room and she scouted out every nook and cranny of her house. She chuckled at herself by how paranoid she was then moved towards a nearby window to now laugh at herself. "Whew. Guess those mystery novels are getting to me."

After a few minutes of gazing out at the brightly lit night sky, Max resolved he should try to sneak into their house. He didn't have any of his old gear with him. It was a shame that he had left it all back at home in New York during his vacation, but who brought harnesses, rope, and thick metal hooks with them when they went traveling on a plane? Yeah, not in this day and age. Technically, they were back in the stone age now in his opinion.

Max squatted atop the arched shingles above the protruding window and maneuvered his body backwards, carefully climbing down onto the ledge and peering inside of the house. His eyes spotted no movement inside the room he was peering into from the glass, and one of his hands reached out to open the window. Luckily, there wasn't a lock on it. Once it was open and he could enter the cottage, Max grasped the top of the frame and slid one of his legs inside. He easily moved his other leg into the opening and held the top of the window frame with both hands as he bent his body back far enough to slide himself into the room.

He arrived inside the empty room without making a single sound, straightening his back and letting go of the window one hand at a time. Max's gaze roved over the setting to take in his surroundings. Knowing your surroundings was always important. The last thing he needed to do after a clean entrance was trip over a random toy in the floor and fall flat on his face, waking up half of the house.

Stepping into the room with one foot in front of the other, Max moved in a way akin to a cat. A really big cat. He was pro, after all, and he was going to explore this cottage and see what was inside of it.

That was until he stepped onto the single creaky wooden board in the entire room.

Max completely came to a halt, gritting his teeth at himself. Fuck, Max mouthed wordlessly. How could he have made such a stupid mistake as that? Hopefully, no one was awake to have heard it.

Sanura was closing the door to Adio’s room when she heard the creaking noise. “Adiooo! You said you would FIX THAT BOARD!” She whispered harshly. Then suddenly her eyes popped open. That board drove her crazy because it mostly made a creaking noise when someone stepped on it. “ADIO! ADIO!” She continued to whisper. “There…is..someone…something in the house.” Of course he didn’t move. The guy could sleep through a war it seemed. Sanura was on her own. She swore she deserved a ‘Team Sanura’ sign

The Therianthrope held her breath as if that was going to make it appear as if she wasn’t in the same area as the intruder. It had to be an intruder. The first noise seemed to be the cottage in general, but this confirmed that someone was in the house.

Her hands gripped the bat so hard she knew her knuckles whitened. Her breath was a little shaky but she was pissed that someone was in her house. What she wanted to do was transform into a tiger and bite their ass off. But instead, a little friendly beat down could be nice. She was sure she was Pmsing anyways.

Sanura stopped suddenly when she saw a figure not all too far from her. She was lucky to be so light. He may have heard her, but she had the bat. They were within range. Naturally she thought she was calm considering they were a good distance apart. Then she swung at him. Not even the swing for going for a home run. She swung at him like an axe murderer.

The next swings were more ‘kind’ but she swung, and swung and swung. Apparently this intruder was her new piñata. “SORRY! HALLOWEEN ISN’T UNTIL WEDNESDAY I BELIEVE!!” She blew a few strands of hair out of her face before she began to hit at the intruder again. “GET THE HELL OUT!!” If he wanted a treat, she would give it to him. The treat of knowing he picked the wrong house to get caught.

Max took only a few more steps forward in utter quietness when he thought he heard something on the floor below. He was in a small attic room. Frozen for a few more moments, he crept further into the attic when the noise was probably a figment of his imagination. He hadn't been hearing too well lately. Then, he came face to face with someone else in the attic. Someone with a baseball bat in her hands. She came in through the open door, and he should've know those noises he heard were real! Someone had been creeping around the house the same as him, and now he was staring down a bat and an angry woman.

About to hold his hands out in a calming gesture in hopes she wouldn't swing at him, she took her first swing as soon as he began moving, even if it was slow. Max swerved out of her way and backed up, holding up his hands. "Hey, hey, HEY! Watch where you're swinging!" he yelled, though his voice didn't carry past the attic. Again, she swung at him. Max quickly stepped backwards and leaned away. "Lady, c'mon! You can hurt somebody with that thing!"

He had to come up with a lie and quick. Max found himself backed up against a wall, glancing over his shoulder to notice his imminent doom that involved him being caught between a rock and a hard place. In a last ditch effort, he held out his arm, fingers up and palm out. "Look, I'm new to the Guard. I just signed up. I saw your window was open, and I thought I would check it out and make sure you were safe and there were no intruders in the house." Another swing of the bat came at him. Max slipped backwards and nearly tripped onto his knees, propping a hand against the wall to balance himself. "Lady, would you please stop swinging that thing!"

Max could be a pretty good liar sometimes. Other times, he was complete shit at it. This time was very so-so. He didn't know enough about his surroundings to lie properly when he was found inside of someone's attic in the middle of the night.

Sanura slowly set the bat down on a desk nearby, an eye squinting to test out if he was lying to her. “You know, people get scared easily around her.” She stated in an irritated nature. “You could have easily called out if anyone was here. I would have rather been annoyed that I was woken up by a ‘guard’ then have to worry or freak out that an intruder may have an eye on my house.” She rested herself against a nearby wall. “How long have you been a guard for?”

She did naturally feel bad for hitting him with the bat. It was just in her nature to feel bad for her outbursts. “I..I’m sorry about the whole psycho moment, regardless if I think you are a liar or not.” She tilted her head in curiosity. “I didn’t harm you did I? It looked like you are very good evading attacks and I can’t really hit all that hard.” Sanura was growing amused at her frantic attack on the stranger, but she wouldn’t hesitate to try and kick his ass if he was an intruder trying to steal anything in her house. She may fail, but it would prove that she highly valued her house.

“If you truly are a guard..I guess I owe you a thanks?” There was a high tone of playfulness in it. “Funny way to show it, right?”

Max was quiet for a moment. It looked like his lying had worked. He hadn't been expecting that. Max stood up straight and made a show of straightening out his long-sleeved shirt. "Well," he said, "I've been a guard for about a week now. I'm still sort of a newbie to it here, but I worked in law enforcement back home." He made a slightly exasperated face and shook his head. "It's hard to announce your presence here without a gun to back you. I feel like I'm vulnerable to any bad guys without my gun." Max nodded his head at that. Man, he doing pretty good so far with this whole covering his ass at the last minute thing. Maybe they didn't get crime very often here?

Max wasn't expecting her to say the next thing, though. Did she think he was lying? And she still felt bad for taking a swing at him? That was a new one. He looked a little uncomfortable all of a sudden. Max wondered what would happen if he was honest with her.

"No, you didn't harm me. Yet," Max revealed. "I'm... I'm okay." He wasn't the type to fight with a girl, though he'd try to protect himself against one for sure.

Considering it for a few seconds, Max pondered telling her he did break in just to see her reaction. Then again, he really didn't want to get in trouble so soon with the real law in these parts. "It's no problem, ma'am. I completely understand. I've done this job before, and it's easy to scare people on accident." It looked like he was still going to lie. Jail cells didn't suit him.

There was something about this man that made Saura uneasy, yet not all too alarmed. He wasn’t the best of guards if he was telling the truth. If he was lying then he was perfect at it. He was just caught in a situation where he was potentially able to suck in the area of fibbing. Sanura wanted to get either the truth or be ignorant enough to believe him. She hated to feel in between, it made her uncomfortable. The guy was harmless, but still.

So, there was a good test to give him. Maybe he was new? Maybe he was a man who never paid attention to the council? “The four council members must be very proud of you. It takes a lot to venture into a house and not know if the people inside may hurt you.” Sanura was no guard and she knew there were three people to the head council. Surely a guard would know that.

She gave a smile that was sweet and forgiving. If he passed this one she guessed there was no room to doubt him.

He sort of gave her a funny, unsure eye for a moment. He wasn't sure why she brought up council members or what they had to do with anything. "I think that's entirely up to the individual," Max said with stout nod. Okay, time to get the hell out of here before she asked some more serious questions. After all, didn't he have a fake job to be getting back to? "Well, I hate to take uo your time, ma'am, so I'll be on my way."

As quickly as he spoke it, he headed towards the window and slipped outside of it. However, Max lingered upon her roof for just a moment longer than usual. "I'll go out the way I came in," he said, saluting her under the moonlight. "Sorry to disrupt your night, ma'am!"

Instead of trying to climb his way down the house, Max moved towards the edge, crouched down, and slid off almost effortlessly. He'd slid off of houses enough in his life to know how to do it properly. It was easier than jumping and there were less chances of breaking or spraining something important on the way down. Once Max was on the ground, he hurried off into the night. Man, it was a rush. But next time, he had to learn to be more careful.
