how wonderful she used to be. ([info]cateyes) wrote in [info]nosuchplace,

Thursday: October 25, 2007
Who: Sanura and Zosimus
When: Late Afternoon
Where: Helicharis
What: Meeting someone on the way home

Sanura looked back at the stables before she began to walk further away from the location, a brief smile approaching her lips. She missed short rides with the horses, the black stallion was especially her favorite and it reminded her of the rather memorable time Adrienne and she had spent together. No unicorn this time sadly, but on the plus side there were no gnomes either. She got to see a Pegasi which was somewhat close to as wondrous as a unicorn.

She hugged her arms close to herself, figuring she could maybe go to the town and fetch herself some food from the Fresh Food Pavilion and dare herself to cook something. She knew she could do it, she knew it just was a matter of time before she broke away from being too lazy to cook.

The Therianthrope walked silently for awhile then paused when she saw what seemed to be a horse..just a smaller one. But when she moved closer it appeared to be a centaur. She had never seen one before. It was a rather young one, an adorable young boy and she smirked. “Are you lost?” She chuckled a bit. “You're inheriting a trait of mine.”

The day before had left the boy with visions of grandeur in his head. He really had enjoyed his first real visit to Helcharis and decided to make a second journey. On the way over after lunch Zosimus had wondered whether or not Daiyu and Jia would be there. The thought dissipated when he saw a stray butterfly. Probably one of the last, too. Chasing after it in to town he watched it fly high in to the sky before finding himself standing outside of one of the many little stores. Excitedly he began to look in the windows, curiosity clear upon his face.

From many angles it was easy to see that his body was half horse and only that. With the blossoming foliage, too, his human body became a little lost. But a woman who had figured out his secret was talking to him. Looking back at her, Zosimus shook his head to let his shaggy brown hair cover his brow. "No," he told her. "Just looking." Why did everyone think he was lost just because he was out in Helcharis? That was becoming something he really wanted to put a stop to. Maybe a sign hung over his back saying "I'm not lost" would work.

Turning his head away from her, he looked back through the bakery window and sniffed at the fresh bread. He'd never had fresh bread straight from the oven. Well, not warm bread anyway. Sometimes the herd would have a meal and have bread with it that was nice and soft, definitely not old, but it wasn't warm either. Watching as the people inside went about their baking, Zosimus blinked before backing away. Slowly his eyes turned from the building to find that lady.

"Do you need help?" he asked. People usually lingered somewhere because they wanted help, right? Well he was a very helpful little boy and was willing to do most anything if he could.

Sanura looked towards the Bakery as well and smiled. “It smells good doesn’t it?” She asked rhetorically. “It always does. Everyday it seems to have a new smell to it. They must come up with a ton of new things. I don’t think I have ever smelt the same smell twice and I am here quite often.” She inhaled deeply, enjoying the scent before she fully turned towards the boy.

“Oh no, I don’t need help.” She stated kindly. “I just like to wonder around a lot. Many times I end up here because I like the town a lot. The people are friendly, it passes the day and I love getting the food at the Fresh Food pavilion..and well the food everywhere is wonderful. It reminds me of a market anywhere else. I’ve learned not to think about where I am.”

She felt a vibe that the boy didn’t like being treated like a child so she offered her hand. “My name is Sanura. It’s nice to meet you.”

Oh, well this lady was much nicer than he thought. Not that he had considered her mean, but her points went up because she spoke to him as another human being and not as a strange creature or a kid. How nice. Zosimus smiled and nodded, glancing at the bakery while sniffing the air as he took casual breaths. It was a good smell, he had to admit, though he would only be able to take her word for it that there was always something new. The boy saw no need for her to lie, not that he had that kind of ability anyway. He was ten!

"Me too," he said. "I walk around all day and meet tons of people!" He grinned up the few inches between his eyes and hers. Being part horse had its advantages. Zosimus was quite tall for his age, being roughly five feet. His bodies had to make up for the odd difference between the two and well, it came out with the appearance of looking twelve. Though, because he knew no other children of his species (or at all) he found no problem with this.

Taking her hand, Zosimus shook his gently but rightly. "I'm Zosimus."

Sanura took his hand with a bright smile. “Well Zosimus, what shall we do today?” She didn’t know if he was comfortable going to the market, so she carefully asked. “Do you care to go to the market? Or is going for a walk more of your thing?” She gave the market more of a thought for a moment before she turned fully towards the centaur. “You know, if you need anything from the market I can always fetch it for you then we can take a walk.”

There were many places Sanura had not yet discovered and many people she had not met. “Where do you live? Did you come here with friends and family?” As a child of always wanting to be independent and being able and sometimes required to do so, Sanura was not surprised the centaur was able to manage being in the Helicharis area by his lonesome.

Do? Zosimus had not expected to do anything with this lady. But he smiled at her. Companionship was nice and he accepted her offer. "We can go in," he said with a point at the marketplace. "I've been before. It's cool." Indeed. "I just like looking, really!" Often it seemed when I child wanted to go somewhere and they said they were "just looking" it seemed they wanted something. Zosimus, however, didn't possess the need for material items other than the bow strapped to his back with the arrows placed in the quiver with it and his herd-family. Friends were nice too. He'd never have too many friends, though all of them seemed to be far other than himself. Not that many of the residents here were young, at least that was all Zosimus could tell. He'd met Bridie. She was younger than himself. That was the end of it.

"In the Southern forest," replied Zosimus when his hooves began to work together and he started to move toward the market. "I came alone. I followed a map! I'll show you later." The young lad kept his old and tired map with him at all times in his quiver. It was his precious memory that he couldn't even recall. "My family isn't here yet. They probably got lost since I have the map and they don't. I'm staying with the other Centaurs!"

He followed a map all by himself? That was quite impressive. She was cautious to say it out loud because it may have sounded like Sanura thought Zosimus was not intelligent enough to follow a map. He sure seemed like he was, he just was so young! “Well you are quite a navigator. I can get lost even if I have myself a map.” The therianthrope admitted with embarrassment. “It happens you know? Luckily I have this place memorized.”

She made sure her strides were in time with the centaur when she looked over to Zosimus. “It’s unfortunate that your family isn’t here, but it is good that other centaurs are here to be similar to family, yes? I bet they’re nice.” She had yet to see other centaurs. Sanura had heard they were somewhat rare. She also wasn’t sure if they were social creatures.

“Where did you come from Zosimus?” She asked. “I came from South Africa after the war began. It was quite the trip!”

Of course he had followed a map by himself! Zosimus was ten, not seven, and even then a well-taught Centaur child could probably follow a map. At least that was what this little boy assumed. It was shocking to find out people could not read maps properly. Sanura was not the only one to admit she got lost or couldn't follow the charted route on the parchment. That knowledge made the lad feel a bit more cocky than someone his age should have. He wouldn't get a big head, but he certainly found it amusing that an adult could be out map-read by a child.

"It's not that hard," he said with a light wave of his petite hand. "Once you know which way you're going." That was the whole point of the map, of course, but you had to be able to figure out which way was North (sometimes without a compass!) to follow said map.

"They'll come. I've told this to everyone." By now the young Centaur was growing weary of having to tell people his parents weren't here, that he'd come on his own, and that he lived with the others in the herd. He was confident his mother and father would turn up eventually--Zosimus assumed they were taking so long because he had the map and they didn't! It only made sense, really. His map, after all, was old and hand drawn. Parts were faded or ripping off, too. His parents probably didn't have a copy, he figured.

"I came from Austria," he knew it now. Sanura was spared having to try and figure it out because he had finally remembered. In the past there had been a handful of complications for he didn't recall the exact name. "It was a long walk! But it wasn't that bad, I guess." He couldn't say he'd experienced worse, though that was beside the point.

Sanura knew where the directions were by the silly nursery rhyme or what have you with the cheesy tune of “ Never Eat Sour Wheat” To make sure she knew that the directions went-North, East, South, and West on a compass. In school she was seriously the worst at finding locations. She would have to try her best to bat her eyes prettily at one of the boys so they would let her cheat in order for her to pass that part of psychical education. She couldn’t even believe that was part of psychical education anyways!

The therianthrope was glad that the boy was hopeful that his parents would arrive to him. That was the spirit people needed around Elysium. Many had dull hopes and gave up on the possibility someone would be joining them. Sanura knew the rest of her family was stubbornly staying in Africa and if there was a sanctuary there that was where they were going to stay. “When they do arrive, you should have a BIG celebration! I mean, I punched my brother and all..but I am still excited that he is here. I guess that was our celebration.”

So he was from Austria? She remembered that area well. Most likely because of her adoration with Mary Antoinette for some odd reason. The poor fated girl was from there. “Wow! Austria? That must be quite the place to live. There is a lot of open land there still.”

Having never had to participate in a gym class, Zosimus had been spared the confusion of what "physical education" actually was. He had no idea, of course, but he didn't really need a class to participate in sports and activity. A) He was a centaur, he liked that kind of thing. B) He was a centaur, it was hard to be out of shape. And who taught directions and locations in PE anyway? Sanura clearly had some crazy teacher going on back in school. She was lucky to not have to take it anymore!

Yet shock covered the young lads face when she said she punched her brother. "You hit him?" he cried with hands covering his mouth. Zosimus would never have hit any other human being! He didn't even hurt animals unless he was out to hunt. Hunting sometimes made him feel bad; he didn't have a mean bone in his body. Caden and Adair had found this out quickly. Really, Sims was a golden child that needed to be broken. He couldn't keep up such a hopeful spirit for long, could he? Would he be able to when he learned the truth about his parents? How? The boy was so strong of will, yet that was hard to swallow. There were reasons his mind had forgotten that whole accident, after all.

"I can't believe you hit him!" he continued before blinking at her amazement. He liked that she was so focused on this bit of information. "I don't remember much," said Zosimus. "I just know that's what the map says." In reality he had no idea he was from Landeck, Austria unless he looked at the map and read it. That in and of itself was a challenge. Zosimus was not skilled in reading at all.

Sanura laughed at Zosimus' reaction to her hitting her brother. To her it was one of the cutest things she had ever seen. She knew that he may have thought it was something rather harsh and cruel towards her brother, but it was just her being..herself. "Yes I did hit him!" she admitted playfully, then decided that she had better explain.

"Well. He's my brother. So when I mean hit him, it's more like a playful smack or when I punch him it's with light force. I'm kind of weak. I have to try realllyy hard to do any impressive damage." She chuckled. "Of course, not that I want to."

Sanura bit her lip for a moment. She felt horrible asking this, but then it suddenly came out. "Do uh, centaurs have their own language?'

"Oh. Okay." Zosimus nodded as he understood. So she didn't beat on him like he had imagined. It was just a. . .tap of sorts. He could see that, therefore it was alright. Though he wasn't sure people should be hitting anyone, he figured it was better that she wasn't hurting her brother. It was a family thing, maybe? He wouldn't know.

Then he tilted his head to the left, brows furrowing in question. "Language?" echoed the boy. He didn't think he spoke anything other than English, which had some strange Austrian accent to it that he didn't ever notice. "I don't think so! But sometimes they say things in, um. . .maybe Latin. I don't know. I don't know what they're saying." Zosimus was actually bilingual. He spoke German as well, but as it was related to his family and the attack on the herd, he didn't recall that fact. If his memories were ever unlocked, the boy might go on a German-Speaking rampage and not stop until the amusement was gone!

Sanura giggled a bit. “You see, I would never harm you. I guess we human tend to use psychical harm to each other before we try to use verbal means first. At least it seems to be a trend.” She stated a bit sadly. “But trust me. Human language as far as insults can be quite severe. So sometimes, a little smack is much better than vulgar language.” She informed Zosimus. It was rather terrible that kids always had to deal with adults cursing around them. Some weren’t aware, others didn’t care.

“Latin huh? You know, I always thought Latin to be quite the language. But every time I try..my tongue feels like it was twisted over three times. They say it is like Spanish..but considering I am horrible in Spanish..I guess that is why I am bad at Latin as well. It sounds cool in all the movies though.”

Sanura gave an impressed smile. “You know-You know a lot for a child!”

Glad to know that Sanura would never try to hurt him, Zosimus gave her a flash of his adorable grin. His white teeth looked up at her as his eyes half-closed and wrinkled around the corners sweetly while his cheeks became more prominent. A very child-like smile, as if she had just asked him to smile for a picture. Overly exaggerated, but happy and real nonetheless. "Oh!" he gasped. "I heard these guys once! They swore a lot!" Not one to tell on people, however, the young lad didn't reveal Caden's or Adair's name to Miss Sanura. "Like, a lot a lot!"

But then she complimented him and he smiled again, stormy eyes glittering proudly. He was very intelligent, wasn't he? Hm, yes. Zosimus put his hands on his hips with a nod. "I pay attention to everything my tutors say." And everything else, too. Sometimes he would listen to conversations when he wasn't supposed to. He liked to learn. If he didn't have amnesia, he probably would be even more intelligent. Many of his memories and smarts were related to the terrifying event and that which happened before.

Oh gosh Sanura could be nosey. It was not an intentional habit. She would hear a conversation of intrigue and though she would try not to listen in, it was like her ears were ahead of her. She would have to have an internal fight with herself and would lose like seventy percent of the time.

A thought suddenly struck her and she nearly jumped up. “Hey! Are you going to the All Hollow’s Eve party?” She tilted her head in curiosity. “I mean I am not certain if you celebrate the holiday. But I mean you could always come in a costume!”

She let out a dreamy sigh. “I am not sure yet if I want to be a pirate princess, something from the early nineteen hundreds or maybe some like mythical creature.” Halloween was her favorite holiday and she could go on about it forever. But she would spare Zosimus.

Not minding her nosiness, Zosimus tilting his head to the right a hair with curiosity. He wasn't sure what this event was. The centaurs hadn't said anything to him about it, nor had anyone else he had seen. Perhaps everyone but Sanura thought centaurs didn't care for Halloween events? It might have been true, if only because it was not exactly easy to get especially festive. Nor was it really a centaurian holiday--it was human. And everyone knew what that meant to many racist centaurs.

No fun.

"Um. . .I dunno what that is," said the boy. He gave a shrug while pondering over her outfits. Sims had absolutely not idea, not even a clue, as to what something from the nineteen hundreds looked like. "I like pirates," he told her. "But you would make a pretty fae." To Zosimus, he was not a mythical creature. Though he wouldn't have suggested she dress up as a centaur, that would have been difficult, he thought all other species were mythical. Aside from the human. Ancient lore told stories of humans who often fought with his ancestors. Those dirty humans were the reason why there were so few centaurs left.

But he was not one to discriminate because that was a long time ago. Zosimus liked everyone for who they were, not because of what their kind had done so long ago. Hm, the boy really was smart for ten.

Sanura couldn’t believe this boy didn’t know about Halloween! She could understand though, not all species must have been informed about it. The therianthrope tucked her hands deep in her back pockets as she spoke of the event. “Okay, well. The holiday is quite special. It’s not like Christmas where kids are spoiled brats and get to unwrap tons and tons of presents.” Christmas did sound wonderful, but it made Sanura think about all the kids who didn’t have the privilege of getting gifts. It also reminded her of how annoying kids were when they weren’t grateful for what they got and wanted more and more and more.

“You get to dress up as whoever you wish for one day on October 31st! That’s really it!” She laughed. “Before the virus we would do a thing called trick or treating.” Of course she was too old now. “Americans did it really, but others adapted.” At least..she thought that was the way it was. Sanura was no history professor. “Anyways trick or treating is where you go from house to house asking for candy.”

She gave the boy a smile. “Anyone can dress up! You certainly could be something.” Sanura could see the boy being something ultra cute. The place was so accepting no one would care at the party.

Hooves moving over the ground as they walked slowly, Zosimus took this new information into consideration. "So. . ." he mused out loud. "Halloween is a costume party?" he asked for clarification. This sounded good to him, really. Costumes were like playing pretend and he was still at the age where he very much liked to pretend things. Though it was harder for him to pretend to do some just because of what he was and the knowledge he did not have. Many Western activities were not part of his curriculum so Halloween, fire works on July fourth, or cowboys and Indians were beyond him. He could not pretend to be a cowboy or Indian, either, because he already technically rode the horse. It was just no fun after you really could.

"Hm," the boy then hummed. "Can I be. . ." Sims had to think about this for a moment. What did he want to dress up as? He imagined it took some time to come up with a good costume that no one else would have! This was hard, he thought, sighing. "I don't know." Looking to Sanura for help with his stormy eyes, he threw his hands up. "I don't know! What can I be, Sanura?" It wasn't as if he had ever watched a TV, or could remember watching a TV anyway. He didn't have comic books or pictures to go off of. No action figure toys or real concept of human life. His parents had been very careful to give him only the Centaurian slice of life. Nothing came to mind other than some kind of animal.

Sanura gave a thoughtful look and tilted her head to fully inspect Zosimus. No one was limited to their costumes. Giants to faes should be able to wear what they wished! “That depends on what you like!” But if he wanted her opinion, the centaur wasn’t one for the kiddish things. Most people who thought he was some kid would probably want him to be something silly like a unique Spider-man or maybe a fireman. She didn’t know. But her brother had to suffer that fate at his youth so she could only imagine that mothers here would think about dressing him cute.

“Well! I see you as some sort of Robin Hood or something! If your parents like costumes of nature you can make that custom with basic natural clothes and you get to wield a bow and arrow!” She swooned over Robin Hood when she was a child, that’s what made her think about it.

“Or something similar to that. Something heroic, but not over the top you know?”

Though he didn't know who Robin Hood was, Zosimus liked the idea of being able to wear his quiver. "I like that!" he said joyfully. Hopping around on his hooves he seemed very excited to be doing this. He circled around Sanura twice with a big smile on his face. "What does this guy look like?" he asked, wanting to know the details. "Can I be him? I can wear my own bow set. I made it!" He was proud to share this with anyone that crossed that bridge.

Sims was a very skilled child, after all. "What do I do to make it? Do I have to wear clothes?" Zosimus didn't like clothes all that much, though sweaters weren't all that bad. The only kind of cloth he liked on his back, really, were those soft blankets they slung over him at night.

Sanura tried to find the best way to explain how Robin Hood looked. “Well..” She started to state with a hum. She started off thinking of the Disney version, then the crappy old version, then Kevin Cosner and then the hot BBC version. “The cartoon version and many others had him with this silly hat with a feather hanging out. That’s somewhat of a trademark. I think people would know from that. It’s green.” She drew up an impressed brow. “I can’t believe you can make your own bows! You could totally go hunting if you had to!” Not that she condoned random hunting, but if times called for it..

“I can’t even make paper airplanes!” She admitted with a snort. “How sad is that?” She knew it was pretty darn sad. “You also don’t have to make the outfit yourself. The tailor could make it for you in a split second!” She finished it off with the snap of her fingers. “We could always go together. I know for a fact the guy isn’t judgmental, so you wouldn’t have to worry about feeling weird. I think you’re the coolest..” Well she didn’t consider him a kid, and didn’t classify him as just a centaur. “Person I have ever met. I mean you are way smart for your age and you are a boy that is actually fun to talk to. Believe me..for girls..that’s like IMPOSSIBLE!”

Sanura cleared her throat. Whew, she talked a lot, but she couldn’t help it.

Well that all made a little more sense, he thought. Zosimus nodded. He liked this idea. For the moment he wondered if he would have to go inside the tailoring building. In the past he had walked by and, well, while he wanted to go in to all of these stores it just wasn't really possible. Abraxius' words hung over him like a weight whenever he thought about going in.

However, Zosimus pushed the thought away quickly. Deal with that later.

"I like that idea!" said the boy with another nod. He wanted to be Robin Hood for Halloween. His First Halloween, even. Sanura should be proud to know she would be partaking in such an event. Sims took a few steps forward as they walked along now, he needed to keep moving or else he'd begin to jump. Ignoring the comment on paper airplanes--he didn't know what an airplane was, not really--the centaur smiled.

"I've gone hunting before. Abraxius and the others take me with them, sometimes. We have to hunt because they don't come here much for food unless it's bread." Or that was what he had noticed, anyhow. He didn't sit around watching dinner be prepared all that often, so who knows? "Um, so can we go now? I don't know how to go alone." Sweet eyes peered up at Sanura and he grinned. He liked being cool.

"You don't like girls?" Was that bad? He didn't really like girls either. But she was okay.

The way Zosimus asked Sanura if she liked girls nearly had her cracking up, but she maintained a game face by looking at the road ahead of her. “Well. I like girls. But I don’t-” She made a small clearing of the throat sound before she took a step forward. “Girls can be weird, yet they can be awfully cool all at once. It is awfully weird Zosimus.” She advised him. “But I am sure one day you will find a pretty lady that makes up for all the weirdness and ewwiness that is girls.” The therianthrope assured.

In regards to if they could go she nodded. “We sure can.” She began to walk and made sure the centaur was with him. “I can’t wait to see your costume at the festival.” She looked towards the falling leaves and continued to walk with Zosimus down the road. She could just imagine how adorable he would look. But it would be even better when she saw it. It would happen..just in a few days time.
