Thursday: October 25, 2007
Who: Corisanthias and Open
When: Lunch time
Where: Lake Alata'elen
What: Corisanthias leaves his new residence for the first time.

He was still confused as to everything that was going on. He remembered the whale, the struggle to fell the beast, the reek of its decaying corpse in the sun, and then...

He was in this place. He had no idea who had saved him only that he had awoken in a building with the smell of water enticing him to get up. He gingerly stretched his legs, grimacing for the first time in a while from a pain other than the huge scar running across his ankles. Despite gaining his strength back, he'd probably remain sore for a few more days, if not from the struggle, than from the change in climate.

But he had to figure out where he was. He stood from the bed he'd been recuperating upon, noting that someone had graciously put some shorts on him. He'd never understood the humans problem with nudity, but he understood well enough that it bothered them a lot. Even in only shorts he was still warm though, and whether someone had left clothes for him or not, he didn't need them.

He walked to the door and slowly stepped out into his new environment, inhaling deeply. He realized too late that it wasn't the ocean he was smelling, but a lake, and a fresh water lake at that He coughed in surprise and leaned against the door to try to come to his sense. Where on earth had he found himself?

Hewie was restless when Asa paused to watch the leaves fall for a moment. He wanted to frolic in the grass, move forward and all the imp was doing was standing in place, wings shielded by a heavy black hoodie. She was new here and for now, she first wanted to be addressed as a human although she could not stand them. Today was her first attempt on being social. In front of a mirror she took a few takes on saying hello, inviting conversation. But something in her told her she would fail.

Now that she was outside among the leaves she was finding herself alive with energy that sparked dangerously. There was nothing to do so she had to move onwards. When she came upon the lake she noticed someone who looked confused. Ohh, that was so fun. To watch someone who had confused drawn all over them in red crayon practically. Asa tilted her head to admire the expression. What could she do with it? Comfort the stranger?

Hewie began growling.

No. Why not give him a nice Elysium greeting.

“Accidentally” she let the Hewie’s leash fall free from her wrist and she whispered for him to frighten the stranger. Without hesitation the dog ran up to the man who seemed confused. What did she like more than confusion? Why fear of course. It was almost funny to her.

Corisanthias heard the sound of a creature running towards him, and though he knew he'd seen such a thing before, in his confused state he was too panicked to think anything but run.

But of course he was so used to being in his merfolk form, and still weak from the events that had brought him to this place that all he managed to do was tangle himself in his own feet and trip into a sort of ball of limbs.

Laying on the ground he managed to let out a series of honks that sounded like a cross between a swan and a scream, hoping that whatever was coming towards him didn't plan on eating him.

Asa first tilted her head in confusion as to the noise the stranger made, but then her lips slowly made ways into a big smile. It only took moments for her to begin laughing at the mans misfortune. “Hewie!” She yelled, running towards him to get him to stop, but instead he was licking at the stranger and it just made Asa laugh even harder. Misfortune should make you feel bad for people..Asa on the other had felt some wave of delight sometimes.

She hovered above the stranger then kneeled to look him over. “He likes you!” The imp complimented, petting Hewie in a manner proclaiming that what Hewie did was a ‘good deed’. Asa then looked over towards the strange man. “You okay?” She almost wanted to touch him, but she refrained from doing so.

At the sound of a voice things started coming together. He remembered seeing such creatures at the outposts he'd visited. The humans called them "dogs" and they were companions.

Realizing he was probably over reacting to the dog, he stopped his sqwaking and straightened himself out as best he could. He did his best to mimic the smile of the stranger, knowing it was considered the "friendly" thing to do when greeting someone, and spoke in his monotone at a level he'd found didn't annoy the humans he'd interacted with.

"I'm sorry I...don't seem to know where I am. Or how I got here. I confess I don't have much experience with dogs, or most creatures beyond the waters of my home for that matter so I appear to have reacted rather...like a salmon when they see the shadow of a whale. I hope I haven't...offended him?"

The concept of offending someone still confused him and though he knew some human etiquette, he didn't have enough experience with the dogs to know how to approach them.

Asa had to admit, something kicked her in the gut and that was called sympathy. Oh no, now a frown was appearing on her face and all she was probably doing was giving soft eyes and sitting beside the stranger. “You don’t remember how you got here?” She repeated. “That must have been scary.” She stated idly, looking onward to the lake. She snapped her fingers so Hewie would stay near to her and not harass the stranger. “This place is called Elysium, a sanctuary for the virus.” She actually offered him a genuine smile, now somewhat saddened to have tried to hurt someone new. Yet, if he was clueless it made her devious mind want to keep him. It was fun to corrupt things you could keep.

Her brow quirked when it appeared he was speaking of water animals. “You..lived with..water animals?” That was kind of cool. She always tried to catch fish and failed, usually ended up killing them. Of course she wouldn’t mention it to this man. “By the way, if Hewie is licking people like he was to you..he likes you. If he bit you..he would have hated you.” Sometimes she made people fall victim to biting, but for some reason she just felt horrible to go this far.

“My name is Asa. Do you have one? You know..a name?”

The information was a lot to take in. Elysium? Virus? Corisanthias tried to read the change of emotion on her face, and understood the frown meant something bad, and the smile something good. He mimicked them as Asa made the faces, ultimately forming a real smile from the fun of making faces. He figured if he could give details on what had happened before arriving here maybe he could find out more on the two words he didn't understand..

"I am Corisanthias Xyllaniasodas, and I lived beneath the ice in the north, near two places the humans called 'Russia' and 'Alaska.' But I don't know what this virus you speak of is. We have no such word where I come from and it has been...a long time since I left the waters of my home. But yes I did live near water animals though they were often hard to come by unless we ventured further towards the land and farther from the ice."

Remembering some of the hunting expeditions he'd been on widened the smile to his face.

"So you are Asa? And the dog is Hewie? And he likes me? I must say that is a better reception than I am used to receiving. Whenever I met with other humans they always called me "crazy" for walking around in the clothing I did. Not knowing what this crazy meant, I figured they could tell what I was and crazy was human for my kind."

So he made friends with fishies more than humans? This was weird and it made her giggle. But fish species were better than awful humans. “So could you understand the language of fish and all? Or was it based on other communication?” She shivered a bit at the thought of being in cold waters. “Cold water must have sucked a bit. I can barely stand swimming in sixty degree weather.” Not that she really swam. Most of the time she just stuck her feet in the water. Something about the water frightened her.

She nodded in confirmation about her dogs name as well as her own. “Yep! We’re at your service!” he thought he was crazy? It almost made Asa give somewhat of a wicked smirk. She ripped the wings off animals that were gifted with beauty, she led people into horrid situations. Sometimes during the night she made frightening noises. She doubted this man was crazy. Maybe clueless..if he was crazy then it was a totally different kind.

“Nawhh. You aren’t crazy. Humans are just useless and ignorant.” She stated freely.

Most of what she said was easy to follow but some of her phrasing made no sense to him. He knew the word suck, but why would the water suck when not in a whirlpool?

"You mean...others cannot talk to the fish? Most strange. I assumed that the language of fish was no different than the strange languages of humans. I don't understand what you mean by the cold water sucking though. It sucked no less than other waters, much less so than the tropical waters with their currents and undertows. Do these degrees relate to the pull of the water? I have never heard the term."

She seemed to possess the energy of the feeder fish, moving as often as she talked, leaping from point to point. He remembered conversations he'd had with them and how he had often gotten lost especially when they came in groups. He hoped everyone here didn't talk so fast.

We agree on the practical uses for humans though. They swim like wounded seals and were only ever useful for making tools with their fires and metals. But we dealt with them until they started demanding something they called money for the tools and stopped taking the fish we brought."

He huffed out his chest pridefully as he recalled his last visit with the humans.

"Two weeks I hunted for the shark that they turned away, demanding their paper and metal. What human can't recognize the skill needed to hunt such a feast?!"

He wiped his arm across his forehead, catching a line of sweat from his combined frustration and the temperature he was not used to.

"But you look human. True, you are shorter than most I have seen but still. If you are not human, then what are you? Smart enough to know the worth of a fish I hope."

Asa tilted her head in regards to talking to fish. "Well I mean..I know people have some fish as pets. Like goldfish and such and they talk to them in these annoying baby voices. Many times the fish die in days. Just like the salt water fishes they get. I felt bad the were confined to being in tanks. Seemed awful lonely in there." The imp would never admit to putting a fresh water fish into a tank riddled with dangerous salt water fish to this man. At the time she found it funny and wold not admit to the deed to her human 'parents'. But now she felt bad. "However, I can talk to you."

She giggled when it came to the 'suck' part. "Well. You see. I meant that it was...uhm..not likable to be in cold water. It makes me hate it it."

When he asked what species she may have been she smirked and took off her hoodie to reveal her winds. They weren't gorgeous like her pathetic prancing cousins (though secretly she was jealous). They were a dim opaque purple with black trim. Her wings didn't glow but they had a strange texture over them due to the secretion she could release. They almost looked like bat wings. "I'm an imp." She gave him a warning about the wings. "Careful. The wings can actually be a tad dangerous."

She gave him a quick look, then covered the wings again. "I like to fool humans. Let them think I am like them. It's good for deceiving. I don't want to be treated differently with them. But with you, I know you are better than humans so I wouldn't actually have to hide."

She gave him a coy smile. "I know the worth of a fish. It was hard to get food for us as well back when I was with my real family."

He knew the practice of keeping fish in tanks. The fish had always been one of two things. Two stupid to realize where they were or too traumatized to speak clearly.

"It is more than lonely. It is..." he had to think for a second to find a suitable word, "terrifying for them."

He remembered how he had rarely seen the humans swim in the water unless it was during the summer months when the water warmed, but he'd never put the two and two together that the water was too cold for them. He always assumed they were just too lazy or scared.

"Ah, now I understand. But it was very likable for me and my kind. We had lived there for as long as the tribe could remember and it was all we knew. For me living in the cold is probably as natural as you living in warmth."

He gazed at the wings for a moment, taking in the details. He'd seen wings before on the birds, but never ones like these. They were strange and filled him with a desire to sculpt them...if he could get the details right.

"An...imp?" He repeated the word a few times to remember it. "Well I will be careful of the wings, like the ridges of some fish. Beautiful but very dangerous."

He was saddened to see her wings covered again, but knew that any creature with dangerous things had to keep them secret until predators came.

"You hate the humans but fool them? Very strange. But if it brings you pleasure than I can understand defying norms."

He thumped his chest and gave his best hunters face.

"Well now you know me and if you ever need fish, all you must do is ask and I will find the best fish in..."

That's when a wave of realization hit. His family was dead and even if they weren't he wouldn't know how to get back to them. The ocean is a very fast place. Like it or not, this was his home now.

Asa noticed Corisanthias suddenly stopped mid sentence when he tried to recall perhaps where he was as far as the water went. "I wish I could tell you where you were. I'm not all to familiar with the bodies of water and how they connect. I came here through land travel mostly. It took several days and though we did travel by boat I was unaware what body of water we were traveling on."

The imp gave him an apologetic look. "But you have the good news of knowing it is supposed to be safe here." Asa then gave a frown. "You have no family here at all?" She gave a sigh. "Neither do I." She couldn't say that she was saddened by this. Her human family was better off among the dead and she doubted her birth family missed her.

He did his best to give a true smile, to keep the haunted look from his eyes. He wasn't too far from the mark, one side a little higher than the other, but he sometimes mimicked human emotions for his sculpting.

"My family was killed in the same attack that brought me here. But they will rest well knowing that I slew the whale that destroyed them, and have found a place to carry out their legacy. Even if I did know where I am, the only reason I got here was that the whale had the strength to navigate the oceans. Not even the strongest of my people could ever make such a journey through the open ocean."

He paused a moment, looking at everything around him.

"It seems this will be my home now, and I will make the best of it. After all, the fish who looks back is often the first to be devoured."

He hoped the metaphor stuck, but he was beginning to understand that few, if any people here would know the ways of his people.

"What happened to your family? Were they lost on your journey here? Or before?"

When asked about her family it was tempting to say ‘oh their dead thank god’, but instead she tried to keep a calm demeanor when speaking of her human parents. “My imp family parted from me many years ago. I was kidnapped from them and I guess it was too much of a chore to come looking for me. Then I guess coming out of hiding is a very risky task. I can’t think cruelly of them for having to stay in their sanctuary in China. But I do believe that I have the right to be angry because of the life I was led to live afterwards.”

She tried to live by the motto she once heard that everything happened for a reason. Unfortunately, that always led up to harmful anger because people shouldn’t be hurt for no reason.

“My human family members tried to get to sanctuary before the virus got to them. But they died before the scouts could save them. I was the only one able to go on the mission.” It was hard to refrain from smiling. Somehow a smile did not show.

“Can you speak to the people of the water about your family? Or at least some friends?” She made a soft noise. “It seems like we both are on the unfortunate side.”

He tried to think of how hard it could be, raised by people not of her kind.

"In my tribe, when a youngling disappeared from our village, the child was declared dead without any hunt being organized. Perhaps it was the same with your parents?"

She had told him twice about this virus and it still confused him.

"What is this virus? You've said the word before, but we have no word for it in my language."

He thumped his hand to his chest and gave a small bow, in respect for both her dead family and his own.

"People of the water? Friends? I suppose I could try to ask other people of the water when I meet them, but as for friends..."

He didn't have any. Not here and not in his tribe.

"Not having met anyone yet, I don't have anyone I could call that.

Asa was somewhat shocked at first that he wasn’t aware of the virus. “You know..Pandora Virus, PV?” She made a small “oohh” voice. “But you must like not have lived near the television right? You are more the old fashioned? If you aren’t around humans I am guessing you just learn things from word of mouth..” She stated slightly to herself. “Well it is the virus that has led so many people here. It’s wiping out the whole human race. Metahumans can live through it. Unfortunately, normal humans die from it. It’s a pandemic.”

She drew a finger across the sand. “Worst ever obviously. The only thing keeping this place safe is magic. Without the magic humans would be dead. Also, from what I have gathered vampires can walk in the day. That’s pretty neat as well. All sorts of species can walk about here. With freedoms they didn’t have before.”

"Television? Metahumans? Magic? Vampires?"

It was all too much to take in. So many things he'd never heard of made him feel very small and he began to get paranoid, yearning very much to be back in the water where he knew he was safe.

"I...guess I am what they call old fashioned, though it is the only thing I know to be. We lived our lives and let others live theirs. There was never a reason to interfere with any outside of the water."

He looked around and began inching away, not wanting to face the newness of it all.

"I...I have to go. I need...water. Need to get to where I feel safe. I'm...sorry. I don't mean to be rude, but..."

With that he started running, stumbling over his feet uncertainly, but managing to keep himself up and moving. He could smell a hint of salt water and chased it. He needed to be where he was comfortable. Needed to be at least somewhat close to home.
