Thursday; October 25th
Who: Nuray Masterson, Jay Masterson, and Sydni Wilson
When: Afternoon October 25th
Where: Van'taurë Lake
What: Nuray wants to swim and Jay is just not seeing the fascination with this weather.

James Masterson was tired. After what felt like ages of traveling, he and Nuray had finally made it to something that could be considered a home. Their place was sparsely decorated, bits and pieces of things that they had thought better than to leave behind. Settled in a chair, he was quite content to stay that way. Unfortunately, his housing companion was not exactly the kind of person to rest on her laurels. She was moving about like a bumblebee, zipping about the place.

"Jay, come on," she stuck her head into what could be their living room. He looked up at her with half-lidded eyes and asked the obvious question.

"Come on where?"

"To the lake," she said it as though it were something that was absolutely the simplest thing in the world. For Nuray, it most likely was. For James, however, it was hardly quite that simple. He needed the logical steps to get from one major point to another.

"Huh," he sighed and cocked his head to one side. Personally, he was quite happy to sit in his chair. Apparently, Nuray wasn't interested in allowing him to be happy with sitting in his chair. She was back, perched on the arm of his chair a few minutes later.

"Come on," she repeated it. Heaven, she could be just like a child.

"Okay, I'm up," he levered himself out of the chair. He went for his jacket, discarded as it had been on a peg near the door. Nuray was beside him before he reached the door itself. "So where are we going?"

"There's supposedly a saltwater lake near here," her voice was that soft chatter she kept up at times. "And I wanna check it out."

The air was brisk, a little colder than he was really willing to deal with. Together, they walked through the woods in the direction of the water. Undoubtedly, she could smell it long before they got to the shore.

"Yes," a radiant smile came across her face as she reached the shore and without checking to see if there was anyone around, she began to strip out of her clothes.

"Ray," Jay yelled at her behavior. "Think you could at least check your surroundings first?"

"Why? There's nothing can hurt us here?" The mermaid was splashing into the water, leaving her clothes in a littered pile on the sand near her friend. "Come on in."

"It's almost freezing, Ray," he wrapped his arms around his body, rubbing lightly. "There is no way that I'm getting into the water."

Her body had already changed, he could see it when she popped her head back out of the water, she didn't come up much past her chin to keep from gasping for air. "The water's warm though."

Shaking his head, Jay started to pick up her clothes. There was no way that he was getting into the water, no matter how nice she thought the water was. She had a hard time understanding exactly how much cold could effect him. He wasn't as resistant as she was. Then he sat down on the sand, waiting for her to decide to come back up.

Nuray, however, was content to feel the movement of water all along her body and knowing that this was her natural habitat. For a mer, there was nothing like being submerged and free. After the walk over land and through the mountains, she was elated to be in salt water again.

Sydni was wandering the perimeter of the saltwater lake again. If she had the proper equipment she would be in the water. She had a new mission. Well, it was the same mission, with different obstacles. Rather than money or school administration, it was a lack of equipment. It was much too cold to swim without a wetsuit, or she would have foregone the boat. But as of yet, she hadn't found anyone willing to let her borrow a boat - even accompanying her. Probably had something to do with intentionally drawing sharks toward the boat - if there were any.

Perking up at the sounds of a conversation, Sydni curiously peered through the trees to see who it was. Someone was swimming? Wow, crazy. And she was about to continue on her way when she noticed... a mermaid?! No way! Not that she didn't know they didn't exist, but she'd always wanted to be one as a child. Really, she had. Or at least meet one. But that was only part of why she moved through the trees toward the beach. The other part was, well, who better to ask about the lake than someone who lived in it.

She was just about to call out to the woman in the lake when she noticed the man standing on the beach. Stopping right where she was, she reconsidered. She didn't even really know what she was going to say. Suddenly uncertain, she looked down to her hands and fiddled with her rings, trying to gather her thoughts.

Nuray was busy working her way to the bottom of the lake just to see how deep it was. Like a hunter in new territory, she was trying to find the boundaries. Going to the otherside of the lake wasn't currently in her plan, but she was going to get to the bottom and at least take a gander at those who made up the denizens. From what she could see, there wasn't enough room to get some of the much larger creatures, but that was okay.

Some of the fish looked at her with curiosity, not used to the look of her. She was the new neighbor after all. A bright blue one swam right up to her, nose to nose, then turned sideways to get a good look at her with one globular eye. She ran her fingers across his fins in hello and then swam on, down into the dark at the bottom. Her eyes adjusted as she went.

The lake bed was beautiful, at least by mermaid standards, filled with the life that was meant to be there. A sigh of relief came, though she hadn't realized that was what she was waiting for. It was kinda like being home. Macedonia wasn't that far from the Mediterranean, so many of the fishes were types she was familiar with, though there were a few new faces. A happy giggle that produced the telltale bubbles and she headed back for the surface, leaping out of the water just for the fun of it before bopping at the top and waving at Jay.

He waved back from his place sitting, a smile on his own face. It was almost enough to forget about being cold, but not quite.

When the mermaid jumped out of the water, Sydni couldn't help but to murmur a soft, "Wow..." Noticing the wave, she looked over at the man seated in the sand. Very softly, she asked, "Do you know her?" It was really rather difficult for her to say anything, but she couldn't miss the chance to talk to a mermaid. Her timidity could not defeat her curiosity or determination.

Moving closer to the man, carefully, Sydni's senses were on high alert. The full was not that far away, and she was nervous to begin with. Every sound made her focus scatter as she tried to pay attention to that and the man. She very likely looked like she had a bad case of ADHD.

Jay hadn't really been paying attention to the fact that there might be someone else about, despite his yelled warning at Nuray earlier about stripping out of her clothes as though she were going to get in the shower as opposed to jumping into a lake. So when she spoke, he looked up from where he was sitting to take in the woman standing near him. Jay was garden variety human, one of those who had been lucky enough not to be struck down by PV when it started its lethal trek across the globe. Since he was human, there was no way for him to know that the woman he was dealing with was anything other than a woman, though he had learned from dealing with Nuray that one took things at face value at their own risk. After all, he had lived on a boat with a mermaid for the better part of the past decade. To discount the other tall tales he'd been told over the years would be foolish.

"That's Nuray," knowing her name definitely covered him knowing her. Or at least, that was how he saw that answer. "She'll be flattered that you're impressed." One thing he had certainly learned over the years was that she could be just alittle vain. At least about her tail anyway. In human form, it didn't show as much. "If you wanna talk to her, you're gonna have to get closer to the water. She won't come out until she plans on getting out and getting dressed again."

That was what he hoped anyway. Nuray was a beautiful woman and he'd seen her body quite a few times, but it was still disconcerting to watch her walk around nude as though there was absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Nuray watched the entire exchange upside down, floating as she was on her back with her head toward shore. Jay was talking to someone female. Nothing else really dawned on her, especially not that they were talking about her.

"And who are you?" Sydni asked. It was amusing that he hadn't thought to introduce himself. "I'm Sydni." And while it would have been disconcerting for Sydni, too, to see the other woman walk around naked, it would have made sense. While it was totally natural for Nuray, Sydni was too timid. Nuray didn't grow up with the social norms of humans.

Driven by impulse so close to the full moon, Sydni started toward the lake. "Could you turn around, please?" she asked over her shoulder. The only thing she had to swim in was her underwear, and she wasn't quite brave enough to simply strip in front of this strange man.

"James," he hadn't thought to introduce himself, but rather to ask the question that had been posed to him. The young woman, Sydni now that he knew her name, had wanted to know about Nuray. Which was perfectly fine, but that did sort of leapfrog over him as a person. Now he backed up to fill in the gap.

When she asked him to turn around, he stood up and turned his back without question. It was obvious what she meant to do and if she was brave enough to get in with this weather then who was he to try and stop her. Though he did have a rather disparaging thought about not quite sane women.

Nuray turned over on her stomach and dipped under the water where it was actually a little bit warmer than the surrounding air. If Sydni was coming in, well, why shouldn't she move to greet her?

Sydni had not meant to jump over the young man's identity so to speak, but introductions were difficult for her, and it was easier to first pursue what interested her. And his thoughts about not quite sane women were rather accurate. The full was close, and the brunette was not entirely in her normal frame of mine. If she was, she might have thought about after she was done with her little conversation. And the lack of dry clothes or a fire.

Instead, she quickly stripped out of her clothes down to her underwear and swam out toward where she'd last seen the mermaid. She wasn't sure if she was swimming or coming to say hi, but the lycan was determined to start a conversation.

Nuray was actually colored to make it easier for her to hide toward the bottom of a body of water, her dark tail and hair making it easy to lose her if one wasn't truly looking. Sydni swam toward her and Nuray dipped under her and then went around.

Even the best human shaped swimmers had problems keeping up with merpeople in the water. It was quite simply a fact of existence that one swam better than the other. Undoubtedly it was probably a bit disconcerting for the mermaid to just kind of pop up in Sydni's face; however, she didn't think about that kind of thing.

One had to be face to face to talk. Actually, one had to be face to face and above water to talk in the human fashion. Unless Sydni spoke the language of fishes, there was no way that they were going to hold much of a conversation under water. So there they were.

"Hi," a bright smile lit up Nuray's face. She bobbed in the water, just high enough to talk, but not so far up that her gills were out of the water just yet. She could have them exposed for a minute or two at a time, except why bother when she didn't have to?

Yes, it was disconcerting to suddenly have someone pop up in front of her when she was swimming. Sydni had not yet had the chance to explore the lake, and she didn't what lived in the lake, so there was the aspect of the unknown, too. Backpedaling as best she could, she managed to not swim into the other woman, but she also swallowed some water in the process. She definitely could not match the swimming abilities of a natural denizen of the waters.

Surprised and a bit startled, Sydni growled between choking at first, her wolf-nature instinctively reacting. The lycan quickly suppressed the unpleasant greeting, and managed a weak smile as she tried to catch her breath. Being this close, Sydni could tell the woman was meant to live near the ocean bed, or lake bed in this case. Her skin was paler, while her hair and tail color would hide her well from above. Sydni finished her greeting with, "Hi. My name is Sydni. I have some questions about the lake."

Sydni's reaction to her sudden appearance was something she hadn't really expected and there was a sort of sheepishness that added itself to her facial expression though she didn't apologize. Just made a mental note to move more slowly around those who weren't used to her as James was. He would have been expecting her to do exactly what she had done, coming up from below him to spook him like jaws.

"Nuray," she settled in the water just floating letting what currents there were, the motion of the water seemed to follow the breeze that floated above it making it easy enough for her to just let the water carry her along. "I do too, that's why I'm investigating. Something I can help you find out?" Nuray's eyes watched the woman with her, interested and amused, what could a land walker really want to know about the water? That kind of thing seemed almost like her wanting to know all about the desert, which she did have some interest in but the good sense not to bother with as she didn't like the feeling of being a dried fish.

Pausing, Sydni asked, "You don't live here?" She had assumed that the mermaid lived in the lake. It seemed like a natural conclusion. It never occurred to her to think that she had come on the boat.

"I had heard that maybe there were sharks in the ocean." Pausing again, she figured she should explain. "I'm an ichthyologist. I study them." By now, her skin had goosebumps all over and her lips were turning slightly blue. She wasn't shivering. Yet. It was too damn cold without a wetsuit.

"Nope," she said easily, bobbing in the water like a buoy. "Just got here, so I'm exploring."

She felt no real cold under the water, her body was used to it and adjusted to the temperature easily. However, she did know that most humans didn't quite work that way. "You're turning blue," she pointed out. That was never a good thing where humans were concerned. "Maybe study sharks on another day? I saw some of the bottom feeders, but none of the larger ones, but I haven't come too far from shore, so I imagine if they are here, they're further out where the feeding is better." Sharks were rarely interested in land. They wanted to be where the food was. After all, most of their brain was geared toward hunting, so it would be a waste to have them somewhere that the instinct is wasted.

"Oh," replied the lycan, disappointment apparent in her face. If she was new, then she might not be much help.

"Oh," she replied to the mermaid's observation. She was well aware of how cold the water was, so she wasn't too surprised that she was turning blue. "Really?!" Tilting back her head, she laughed and then gave enough of a kick to raise herself out of the water a bit. Falling back, she dunked herself under for a moment, but quickly surfaced still laughing. "This is incredible! The salinity in an enclosed lake often varies too much to support large predators, not to mention there's just simply not enough room... Oh, and what about the temperature variations? Most sharks can't adjust to that well..." Clearly rambling, Sydni only stopped to laugh. Few things could make her talk this much. A discovery was one of them.

Suddenly shaken by a rather strong shiver, the brunette excused herself through chattering teeth. "I think I should head back now. I'll see you around, though. If you want to help, I mean." With a bit of a wave, Sydni struck out for shore.

Nuray listened to the woman talk about sharks with some subdued interest. She had been born in the sea. She had swam in oceans previously, but never in what one could call a saltwater lake. This was a first for her, so whether or not there would be sharks in the water was something that she was only just starting to learn about.

Yes, she probably needed to go back to shore if she was going to shiver. Shivering used up energy that should be used for swimming. Nuray started to follow, dipping below the were and swimming along. It was easy to lose her like that.

Jay had watched the entire exchange from his spot on the shore and as Sydni got closer, he turned his back again. If he was sensitive about stripping in front of him, then it was probably best if he didn't watch her get out of the water.

Unsure if Nuray was planning on heading back with her, Sydni simply continued her way to shore. She hoped the mermaid came close enough to shore, at least, that she could ask her about meeting again. She'd definitely have a boat next time. No matter what. Then she could stay longer and maybe get some research done. Besides, Nuray seemed like a sweet person. The one merperson she'd met before hated humans. It was good to see that Nuray did not hold that prejudice.

As soon as she got to shore, she hurried to her clothes and stripped out of her wet underclothes. Shivering rather uncontrollably now, she pulled on her dry clothes and turned back to the water to see if Nuray was visible. She had a few more things to ask.

Nuray was not so much anti-humans since she had been around them most of her life in some form. Growing up near a resort town meant that one had to have some interaction with them. Her Father and Mother had always been careful to tell her about judging based on character as opposed to species, though she still did have a few lingering doubts about a number of humans. That was mostly because she didn't understand how any creature could wantonly pollute in the spaces of others without any kind of consideration. She kept up swimming below Sydni until the water began to turn shallow.

There, she swam in a circle and then popped her head up above the water, letting her eyes adjust to the change in the light again. Her pupils dialated back to normal size from being under water, showing off her brown eyes.

Jay didn't have the heart to watch a woman shiver. Old school manners were something that he had never seen fit to divest himself of. Once Sydni was dressed, he offered her his coat without a word. Nuray couldn't help but smile, he was always like that. All good manners and chivalry.

Water was running in little rivers down her face and hair, which was normal, pearling off her skin. Probably because it wasn't so much skin as so many tiny scales, miniature versions of the scales that made up her tail in a differing color.

Startling, Sydni gave Jay a wary look, before accepting the jacket and offering a grateful nod. "Thank you," she said softly. Pulling the jacket tight around her, not too difficult with her compact form, she looked back toward Nuray. "W-Would you be able to m-meet with me? D-Do s-some research?" Yep, still chattering.

She wasn't one of those scientists who would pursue a goal until it consumed her - she was no Ahab or Dr. Jekyll. It was more like, she saw a chance to hold on to something she'd lost. Even if it was small, she couldn't let it pass through her fingers. Not a chance to reclaim what she'd had.

"Research sharks," Nuray was a bright woman, if Sydni said that she had studied sharks previously, then it only made sense that she would continue to study sharks in this strange place. "Sure."

There would be no problem really, Nuray liked to swim and she was fast enough to stay out of the teeth of most sharks if they should decide that she was dinner material. Mostly, when she had dealt with them, they'd been more interested in smaller fish that fit into their mouths.

One could have an interesting conversation with a shark, so long as you were talking about the best ways to catch and eat something. No long monologues on philosophy coming from a shark.

"Are you getting out soon," Jay was asking from where he stood a foot or so away from the water's edge.

"Probably not."

"Then I'm going to go back to the cabin and leave your clothes here. Please remember to dress before you walk back." He sounded just like someone's father. He'd always been like that though, solicitous and gentlemanly.

"R-Really?" the brunette smiled. "Th-Thank you. Really. It means a lot to me. And d-don't worry. I don't plan on hurting them or sticking them or anything else. I just want to look. And I won't use chum, either." After all, she likely knew the creatures of the oceans as friends. At least, that's what she assumed from other aquatic supernaturals she'd known.

Sydni wouldn't have been surprised to here that sharks were not big talkers. At the most, she expected they would be very straightforward, blunt, and to the point. If they were at all talkative to begin with.

"W-Where do you live?" Sydni asked Jay. If he was heading in another direction, she'd have to give him back his jacket.

The idea of someone tagging a shark wasn't alien to her and the few that she had met which had been through the process seemed to forget about it fast enough that it did no lasting harm. It was the dolphins who remembered things far more clearly and were sometimes traumatized by what went on with being tagged.

But dolphins were smarter than sharks, so it really didn't come as a surprise to anyone that they would form opinions about the things that humans did more than the sharks did. Most of the sharks saw chum as simply free lunch. Nuray herself did eat fish, but her way of handling it was something close to how one would remember Native Americans handling the eating of animals they considered to be their equals. It was a reverent occasion and nothing was meant to be wasted. Still she nodded to Sydni's enthusiastic denial of what were common human practices. Then she just leaned over backwards and disappeared below the surface again, her own exploration unfinished.

"The forest cottages, it's not far. If you don't mind stopping in, I can put some tea on and you can warm up a bit before you run off." The older man just smiled at her.
