Who: Everyone
When: 5:00 PM
Where: The docks
What: The arrival of the Elven Ship

The news of the arrival of the Elven ship had been the talk of the haven for the past couple of weeks. The Head Council had organized a group to prepare for its arrival, expanding upon the docks and decorating it the best they could even with the seemingly non-stop rain showers. At the end of the two weeks were completely re-vamped docks, one that could accommodate the smaller boats that occasionally traversed the lake while now big enough to handle the large ship that was due very soon.

The ship hadn’t arrived in the morning, the current storms outside the valley no doubt delaying it by a few hours. It was well into the afternoon before the guard in the tower by the shore yelled out from his post announcing that the ship had been sighted just entering the valley. It was a large vessel even though it was far on the horizon. The sun was only just beginning its descent in the sky, and the orange glow was reflecting brightly off the clouds. The white sails of the Elven ship billowed in the wind that was carrying it to the docks. It was a beautiful sight, and the people that had gathered by the docks were waving happily to the people on board.

It was a happy occasion for the haven since it was the first attempt at travel after the outbreak of the virus and the war. The excitement in the air was palpable as the crowd grew more and more boisterous the closer the grand ship came to them. Some started cheering and whooping into the air, others began talking animatedly about the sorts of people the ship was bringing with them. It was an event that most of Elysium had come out to participate in, and it would not be forgotten for many years to come.

Marit's usual morning swim had been delayed with the anticipation of the ship arriving at that time but alas the storms changed everyone's plans. She had delayed herself as much as she felt she could and amidst the rains the mermaid returned to her natural habitat and went about with her aquatic friends. Even the creatures below the surface knew that something was to happen today! As she went about with Charlie, her hippocamp-friend, little fishes (or butterflies) were in her stomach in anticipation.

She spent the majority of the day beneath the surface and before she knew it, the ship was coming across. All of the curious watched its arrival from this alternative point of view as it crossed into their haven. All eyes were at the flanks of the ship in hopes that perhaps some new fins and tails would be seen with it but alas, there was none. Marit still had hope that there would be new merpeople onboard, as a constant journey like that--even by sea--would be very tiresome after awhile.

Once it was in far enough, Marit quickly swam back to her bungalow and pulled back on her dress before pulling herself up onto her little dock and waited for her tail to split into two legs again. It was approaching on sunset, the sky sleepy with shades of blues and reds; Marit thought it was a shame that everyone on board would not get to see Elysium in better light during their first arrival. Tomorrow would hopefully bring about some better weather.

Even quicker now as the ship was practically docked by the time she got back, Marit grabbed her little boots and shawl and took off down and along the path that stretched the length of the bungalow homes. By the crowd was thickening and the excitement was high. Her hair, still dripping, weighed heavily on her shoulders and was dampening her dress. She stood still and watched as everything unfolded, and also looked about the people for a familiar face.

People everywhere. After so many years of being on a boat, only seeing this many people once a month or so, this was a major treat to be caught up in a throng and almost borne along by its motion. Nuray had gotten separated from Jay, but they had already decided on where they would meet before dark, at the water near the center of the little town that they had come to be in. Jay was probably off doing something utterly mundane. She wanted to see the ship that she had heard so many murmuring about. The call of deep water was strong, felt in her bones, and coursing through her blood along with the beat of her heart.

So she ran her fingers thought dark hair and looked up at the ship, eyes wide. It made the tiny boat that she and Jay had lived on seem even smaller. Her jaw was just a little slack as she moved along, which was probably why she didn't realize that she had walked into someone until it was already far too late.

"Sorry," she spoke quickly. It was only afterwards that she realized the person that she had walked into was wet as if they'd been standing out in a rainstorm. Had they fallen off the boat or something? Not one to ask those kinds of questions right off the bat, she just smiled and tilted her head at the stranger. "I'm Nuray, pleasure to meet you."

She didn't introduce herself as Nuray Masterson, not since Jay had explained what that meant. After all, they weren't like that, there was no reason for her to use his last name if they weren't like that.

Her eyes were cool and calm, though brighter than the waters before them by a few yards, despite the sudden but light bump from the side. "Oh!" she exclaimed softly as she turned some to see whom had been the cause. A young lady had apologized so quickly that Marit could only get out a smile of forgiveness before she had a bit of a strange feeling. There was something about this other woman that seemed familar but was somehow different. Marit's eyes wandered over the other's face but did not recognize her from anywhere in particular. Then, she spoke, and Marit blinked away the sensations and answered.

"What a lovely name. I'm Marit." Usually, Marit would give her full name but there had been something to this place, much like what Nuray had come to know and use, which accepted the use or the neglect of sharing last names. Then, of course, there were some people who did not have a use for surnames and therefore never bothered with one. A long time ago, Marit was one of those creatures, but her migration and assimilation to land did tend to take the lead in social situations. Since Nuray had not given one, Marit did not feel the need to do so, either.

"Have you only just arrived?" She was eager and hopeful to meet new people from afar, though Marit was happy to make new acquiantances and friends regardless of whether they had been in Elysium only a day or since it was founded.

"Oh yes," Nuray was pleased to meet someone new and to be so easily forgiven for the rudeness of not watching where she was going. "Jay and I just got here and apparently our arrival met with the arrival of many others." Again she looked up at the ship, eyes tracing along the lines of it. "A ship so large must be carrying so many."

It wasn't unusual for Nuray to get so caught up in her own thoughts that she failed to realize that she was holding a one sided conversation. It came from the amount of energy that she had to burn all the time. One never seemed to realize that when you swam in the ocean, you were almost constantly in motion, either to maintain your position or get to a new one. Without those massive forces working on her body, she had more energy than she often even knew what to do with.

"Marit's a very lovely name, also," she seemed to remember her manners after a moment and returned the compliment. "Let me know if I'm out of line, but why are you all wet?" It didn't occur to her that she might have run into someone else who loved the water as much as she did. "I sort of wish I was, but I hear talk that there's a saltwater lake somewhere around. I shall have to go investigate." There she went again, off a tangent that only she could really connect to her current thinking.

Still, she smiled and seemed as if everything were perfectly fine with the world. Even if she was running off at the mouth and holding an entire conversation on her own without giving her companion a chance to get a word in edgewise. James was used to that kind of thing. Nuray could listen and often did without speaking for long periods, but once you got her talking, you might as well take a seat and let her run out of topic.

It was indeed a very large ship and Marit could only hope that it would bring new possibilities and people to this haven. "Then you've come at a very exciting time! We haven't had so many people arrive all at once before. We've all been talking and waiting for today." All anyone could talk about was this arrival, but she had to suspect that the poor weather may have dampened some of the spirits of those who wished to be in attendance.

The one-sided conversation at present was not a bother to Marit, who was very easy-going and believed that Nuray was just very happy to be speaking with someone new. "Thank you," she said in return for the compliment and smiled widely at the question. "Well, the saltwater lake is to the north, and north is that way," pointing in the proper direction, "just beyond the northern part of town. I haven't been there myself but that is simply because I'm more of the freshwater variety of mermaid."

The way she spoke was soft and had a rhythm to it, not so much sing-song like but it was definitely distinctive. English was not her first language though it would be the one used most often in Elysium. "Are you, too? A mermaid?"

"North," she marked the direction easily. Nuray had a distinct advantage on water in that she always knew exactly what direction she was facing. On land, it wasn't quite as developed, but if she could orient on one direction, then the others were easy enough and she rarely forgot her directions once she found them. "That's good news." She'd been out of saltwater for far, far too long. After spending years living on a boat, she had seriously started to miss being able to just hop over the side and swim for a few hours before Jay would miss her enough to come looking.

Running into another mermaid after all this time actually made her squeal like a little girl would over something pretty. Heaven only knew how long it had been since she had actually gotten to talk to one of her own kind. Granted, Marit was a freshwater, but that she made them cousins rather than siblings. Remembering her sometimes exceedingly absent manners, she put her hand over her mouth and excused herself.

"Yes, I was born just off the coast of Turkey. Which is that way," now that she knew which way was north, she could also figure out which way was East. Macedonia was above Greece which was to the East of Turkey, so it made some sense that East was the correct general direction. "Are there many merpeople here?" She was a bit hopeful that maybe some member of her family had stumbled upon this place also. Not that she wanted any of them to be stuck in landlocked places, but a landlocked place with a saltwater lake was nearly as good as being stuck on an island in the ocean.
