Sunday: September 30, 2007
Who: Everyone
When: 5 PM
Where: The Mausoleum by the Temple
What: Dr. James Pryce's wake

Zane stood in front of his mirror, adjusting the tie just one more time before he would slip on the black jacket. He could hear Pryce's voice in his mind, "Why so dressed up, Smithy? Planning on getting laid tonight?" The thought made him smile a little, only to find that the idea of never having to hear his friend's voice tore him up inside. He swallowed the lump in his throat, and smoothed out his hair before he left for the mausoleum.

The tone was somber as with any funeral service. The attendees were downtrodden, and a few of them were crying. Zane was trying his best not to be effected by it, but it was hard when there at the front of the room was Pryce's coffin. It was left open for anyone who wanted to come up and say a few words to the dearly departed, or for anyone who wanted to pay their respects. Though many people did not know Doctor Pryce personally, many knew of him since he was one of the few doctors in Elysium.

The service was presided over by Theora, and the Elven priestess spoke words that offered comfort for those who felt the loss the deepest. "Do not think of James as being gone," she said. "For he will live on forever in our hearts and memories. We honor him best by living our lives to the fullest." Zane had kept his emotions in check until the moment he walked up to Pryce's coffin. The top half was left open, and Pryce was lying inside, dressed up in his nicest suit. He looked like he was sleeping, and in some ways that brought Zane some comfort.

"This is it, buddy," he said in a low voice. The tears that had welled up in his eyes were falling down his face now, and the doctor made no attempt to hide them. "Look at you, all dressed up. I don't think I've seen you this dressed up since the wedding." He chuckled a little through the streaming tears, wiping them away with the heel of his hand. "I can't believe you keeled over on me before our next poker night," he added, trying to make light of the situation. "Dammit..." The jokes weren't working as well as he thought, but he kept talking. "Thanks for everything, but most of all, thanks for being my friend. It won't be the same without you." Zane wiped at his tears again and moved to pat Pryce's cold hands as they lay folded along his middle. "See you later, buddy."

And with that Zane moved away from the coffin, making room for the next person to say a few words to the late Doctor James Pryce.

Adair and Zane? :*

“Hey dude, that’s the best suit I’ve seen.” Adair whispered, not really sure what else to say. He was horrible with funerals. All he knew was that at his funeral, he wanted to be buried with his Ramones shirt on and a pair of jeans. But Pryce looked like he’d be going to wherever it was you went when you were dead a dashing man. “You’ll impress the ladies I’m sure. Make sure to make them laugh, okay?”

Though he and Pryce didn’t get off to a good meeting at first, he knew the guy just needed to warm up to people. Adair hid in the medical pavilion often and saw that he made people laugh so he was sure the halls would be a lot more..well ghostly.. He believed in the whole ‘spirits watching thing’ though. So, who knows. Pryce just may be looking over from time to time.

What made Adair less saddened by the situation was to just think of Pryce as sleeping or something. He just looked like he was in a deep slumber, never to be disturbed. So, that's how Adair would mark it in his mind. Ignorance was bliss right? No one should die, they should just sleep for a really, really, really long time.

After a few more moments of paying his respects, Adair set a hand on Zane’s back and gave a slight smile. “You alright, mate?”

Zane watched as people walked up toward the coffin, each one paying their respects to the man. He smiled a little at the scene, glad that so many people came to honor Pryce and his life. It was nice to see that his friend had made such an impact on others in Elysium. He wasn't surprised though, Pryce was a great man and doctor.

He managed a smile for Adair and returned the pat on the back. "Yes and no," he answered honestly. "But I will be." He sighed a little. He had seen Adair at the medical pavilion often, just watching people come and go at times; other times he was there to visit those who had been admitted for a night or two. Adair seemed like a good guy, though, even if they hadn't shared a proper conversation before. It was never too late to make a friend, right.

"What about you? You doing all right," he asked sincerely.

“Yeah, I’m alright.” Adair confirmed. “It’s sad to find out your name through the services but I am sorry for your loss, Zane.” He crossed his arms, looking at all the people who were paying a visit to Pryce. Elysium felt like a big, friendly community. People might not have known each other, but they still respected your name. “I’m Adair. I’m not sure if we have met before, it has been awhile.”

Adair felt a smile come to his face despite the event. “Hell could have been worse right? The people orchestrating the funeral could have tricked him out in a pink suit or something.” The thought of it made him near laugh, but instead his smile just widened. “But instead the event is rather moving.”

Zane accepted Adair's introduction, and gave him a friendly pat on the back. "Nice to meet you, Adair." He grinned a little. "I think Pryce mentioned your name before - you came in looking for your friend, Adrienne, right? I heard he gave you a hard time." Talking about Pryce was bittersweet, but it was nice that he had memories at all. It was something that he would treasure for the rest of his life.

Adair's next comment brought forth a chuckle, and the doctor nodded. "Damn, if anyone dressed him like that, he'd come back to haunt them, that's for damn sure." Zane shook his head at the thought, and then let out a sigh. The idea of Pryce coming back as a ghost was amusing, and in Elysium it wasn't a far-fetched idea in the least. A part of him wondered if he'd be happy to see a ghostly Pryce, or if he would be freaked out by it.

"Theora performed a lovely service. She's really got a way with words." Zane's solemn mood returned as he looked over at the casket. "It's weird knowing that when I go back to the medical pavilion, he won't be there. He really made it worth working there, y'know?"

Adair nodded in confirmation about Adrienne. “Yeah.” He replied fondly. “You see, at first we got off on the wrong foot because you shouldn’t walk in a hospital with a cigarette in your mouth. Then I was just eager to see her so I kind of was jumpy and rude. At the time I thought he was mean so we clashed. Then I thought he was a really funny guy. You just have to get used to him. Some people just didn’t get the way he ’rolled’” Adair teased, finding some way to put it. “But he was an awesome dude.”

The psychic wiggled his brows to somewhat lighten the mood. “That Theora eh? Quite the babe. I wouldn’t mind listen to her preach all day.” His mood however, was then subtle when he saw that Zane mentioned what it would feel like when he returned to the Medical Pavilion without Pryce being there. "Heeey. It will be okay, I promise." He lightened right back up.

“You da man now.” He joked. “You’ve got to be in charge of keeping the place fresh and fun. Don’t make me go to the medical pavilion and pretend to be a doctor just to try and lighten the mood.”

Midori kept an expression of complete calm at the funeral. But the fact she was in attendance at all spoke of her respect for the deceased. She had been quite busy of late, converting her forest cottage into a shrine to Inari. She hadn't shown her face around town, except to procure provisions. But the death of James Pryce had roused her from her self-imposed exile. She had respected the man. He was smart and a cunning fighter. She would pay her final respects to him. It was a shame he had died. He was someone Midori could have seen as a worthy rival here in Elysium.

Midori had donned a white kimono for the service. While many might have thought it was inappropriate, it was the traditional garb of mourning for the Japanese. Midori was big on tradition. She would not alter her own beliefs for Pryce's funeral. He would have most likely been very entertained by her steadfast hold to her own beliefs when at a Westerner's funeral.

There was a strange feeling in Midori as she sat at the funeral. It was an empty feeling. Pryce had been someone she had enjoyed being around and had hoped to spend more time around. She may have been far above him in status, but he was a good companion. In the hundred-plus years she had been alive, she had never felt this feeling before.

Midori was lonely. And she was truly mourning the loss of someone she thought could have been a friend.

Kazuki and a visit to Zane
[info]bloodisyouth

Kazuki stood in front of Pryce for a moment, fumbling his fingers as his mind sought out a few words to say. “I, uhm. I kinda thought you were a jerk.” He confessed quietly. Of course, that wasn’t all he had to say. “But you know when things are really not funny when you think about them in the now, but then awhile later they are hilarious?” he ruffled his crazy colored hair. “Well, despite the fact that I really did feel like biting you and you did drive me crazy for a little awhile there.” Kazuki frowned, it did make him sad and though he was sensitive he told himself not to cry. “I wouldn’t have wanted to be trapped in the closet with anyone else.” He bit his lip as he said his final words. “I hope that’s a good memory for you too.”

Kazuki meant to just leave, but when he saw Zane he went up to him and pretty much glomped him. Of course, he let go after a moment. The vampire wiped his eyes and puffed out his chest. “Sorry for your loss.” He said softly. “And for the sudden hugging..I kind of just do that..”

Zane had seen Kazuki when he came in, and the doctor immediately thought about the funny circumstance that had brought him, Pryce, and Kazuki together. It was a good memory in Zane's mind - having fun at work was always a good thing, and meeting new people was a plus as well. Zane saw Kazuki fumbling near the coffin, and he knew that the young man was trying hard not to cry. It was hard to do so in such a somber setting; even Zane himself had let himself go once or twice already.

Zane hadn't expected Kazuki to come up and give him a hug though. It wasn't unwelcome, though, and Zane returned the hug before the vampire let him go. "Hey, thanks for coming. And Pryce's passing is a loss for everyone, not just mine." He smiled at Kazuki and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. "You doing all right?"

Kazuki nodded, giving Zane a look of thanks. “It’s just weird you know? I mean, it seems so surreal when you are with a person just the other day..and then..” he trailed off, not wanting to make the mournful occasion even worse. “It just really sucks that it had to be him. He’s one of those people that may take warming up to, but he truly is..was..wonderful.”

The vampire was concerned about Zane as well. “How about you?” He looked down, moving some of his wild strands of hair out of his face. “How are you holding up? We all had some much fun the other day.” He smirked a bit, laughing only a little. “I can’t believe you did that!” He punched his arm lightly. “But you got what was coming to you.”

Kazuki was right about one thing, the entire situation was weird. Weird and surreal. Just the other day they were together, goofing around in the medical pavilion. And the next they were attending Pryce's funeral. He was just here, and now he wasn't. It just wasn't fair. "Yeah, he was wonderful." He patted Kazuki on the shoulder, and turned his head to look at the coffin.

His gaze didn't stay there long though as he focused back on Kazuki, smiling as the young vampire spoke of the prank that Zane pulled on them. He chuckled softly, " I couldn't resist! You guys were just open for attack, and I swooped in!" He returned the light punch to Kazuki, aiming it to the man's shoulder. "But you guys got me back real good, too! So we're even, until the next time that is." It was a good sign that Zane was able to joke, especially during such a sad event.

Kazuki shuffled his feet on the floor, hands behind his back. “Hey, there better be another time when we can hang out. I think you need people pestering you, not to mention you were fun to hang out with just in those short moments.” Kazuki wouldn’t want Zane to be sad for all too long, though it was heartbreaking. He didn’t know Zane long enough to think he had him figured out, but he was worried. “Expect yourself to have to watch your back, because I might suddenly pop out of no where and try to lock you in a patient’s room. A real scary patients room or..uhm something.”

The vampire gave a smile and a sigh. “Just know that if you ever need anything..you know. Just uhm not clothes. I’ll be at the tailors.” He knew Zane might have quite a few people to talk to so he didn’t want to hold him up. “Plus you know. You still have to get me back.”

Giles and Leon
[info]thecaringcurse
2008-09-16 01:06 am UTC (link)
“If there is a shag pad up there make sure to make good use of it.” Giles advised Pryce as he looked down at the man. Pryce and he were like-minded men and it seemed rare these days. “Every time I get away with making a pass at a woman and she doesn’t think of me as an old pervert, I’ll be thinking of you. You’re in control up there now, buddy.” The Brit scratched behind his ear and laughed only a bit. “I will actually miss you and from a cranky bastard like me-that says a lot.”

When he turned to leave he ran into someone. A new bloke he had been seeing in the medical pavilion. Ah, yes. He believed his name was Leon and he was in the field he hated most. Of course, he was here because it was only fitting. What was he going to do? Offer his services?

“It’s okay. We don’t need a head shrinker here. Now is the time where people keep all this emotional crap inside and don’t express the true crap to anyone else. Then after a few days of self loathing or pity or what have you then we come and see you.” He puffed his cheeks and waggled his brows. “Oh, I’m sorry. I’m Giles, Doctor Giles Audley. I know who you are otherwise I wouldn’t have insulted you. Well I would have, just not directly towards your profession that obligates you to be here.”

Leon wasn’t given the honor to know Pryce. He just was lucky enough to hear a few stories that gave him the impression that he was a good man. It didn’t matter what people would have claimed him to be. In Leon’s eyes he was a good man who met a terrible fate.

He went to pay respects to Pryce, perhaps just say a respectable word or two when he was suddenly bombarded with insults. Head shrinker? Yeah, he didn’t hear that a million and one times. Shady doctors and patients that were court ordered to see him loved that term. Of course all of them were immature. That’s what Giles struck him as. An immature child stuck in an intelligent older mans body. It didn’t surprise him that the cruel accusation of him being here by obligation came next. Leon just smiled. He wasn’t going to be offended by someone who wanted to analyze another human being during a funeral.

“Actually, doctor. I came here because I wanted to pay my respects.” His voice was terribly calm and unaffected. "It’s kind of wrong to come here and analyze people during a funeral now isn’t it?” Of course, he was referring to Giles but he tried to sway himself out of a confrontation. “I’m not that far deep into my job.”

Ohh. Of course. The subtle hints of confrontation. He loved that. Typical for someone who prevented people from causing fights. There was just a dull hint of insult and that was it. End of the match. Giles was supposed to be the one who looked like a jerk at the funeral because he was being disrespectful at a time of mourning. No, not really. He just didn’t like some new guy at a funeral pretending to mourn a loss he didn’t lose. Pryce was near alien to him.

“Ahh yes. Glancing at him from across the hallway for a few days does bring about fond memories doesn’t it? Did you like the color of his hair? Enjoy his laugh? Was it the eyes? Please. Spare me another sad face and crying. “ Giles gave a wide smirk. “Of course you are at least ankle deep into your job. If you weren’t, you’d be more pissed off.” He made a face that clearly was matter of fact. “You’re here because you’re the guy who cares and you just want people to know. I get it. I feel the aura. You can go home now and feel good about yourself.”

Leon really didn’t like being told off by some doctor that had no idea who he truly was. They didn’t work at the same clinic before the PV virus struck, they didn’t go to med school together and there was no reason for him to have some sort of juvenile attitude towards him. If he had to leave, that was fine. He could always pay his respects in private. But he wasn’t going to leave like a dog with his tail between his legs. Not in this situation. Of course he would handle this situation in a matter of adult action. If the two were to be working together, Giles at least needed to know that if he were going to be using sharp words in hoping to ‘hurt feelings’. He was forgetting the fact that as a Psychologists they learned the whole ‘sticks and stones’ routine.

“I’m not pissed off Dr. Audley as you so poorly put it.” He smiled smugly. “I’m actually flattered. I’m flattered that at a funeral you decided to single me out and see what I am all about. Somewhat impressive since we’ve never met before” He shifted a little as he crossed his arms. “So, let me give you a word of advice, since you know part of that is my job.” He wasn’t afraid of Giles; his best asset was his words. “I think you’re so poorly into your job to remember you’re a Cardiologist. Trying to step into my field, really isn’t for you, hmm?” He slipped past him, and then turned towards him. “You’re neck deep in your ego, so if I was ankle deep in my job..I’d say I was safe.” He paused for only a moment. “I’ll see you at what we consider ‘work’ if you even do any.”

With that being said he walked away from the premise. Giles needed to know that if he tried to kick someone where it counted, sometimes people counter attacked.

Duncan and OPEN

Duncan didn't really know Dr. Pryce, nor did he know any of his close friends. He did, however, respect anyone of the medical community and felt that as someone who had helped wrangle people into Elysium, it was his duty to also say something pleasant when they left it. He'd been to countless funerals in his lifetime and they were all pretty standard to him at this point. He felt no large degree of sorrow or depression when he approached the service, but nonetheless his usually dancing eyes were solemn, and his jaw was hard and taut. He gave a few nods to anyone who looked in his direction, but thought it would be rude to start introducing himself to people who didn't know him at such a time.

In fact, he wondered if people thought he was rude just arriving. He'd found that some people were extremely flattered when complete strangers showed up to their loved ones' funerals, where as others would offer a crooked eye and whisper: 'Who the hell is he?' to each other. He didn't want to offend anyone; he was just being polite.

He satisfied himself by signing his name in the beautifully decorated sign-in book, and then added the message: "To his family and friends: Sorry for your loss." Content, he looked around the room again, then turned to leave. It had been a long day, and it was getting late; it was already past seven.

Duncan, Chris, and Charlie
[info]runasone

Chris and Charlie were late to the wake as well, but that didn't stop the twins from going at all. Doctor Pryce was their friend, a surrogate father to them both when they had first been brought to the haven. He played with them, and he took care of them, and now that he was gone they felt his loss greatly. Chris had been crying since before they had left the forest cottage. She was wearing a pink shirt, and white skirt to the wake. It was untraditional, and her brother had no idea why she hadn't put on something more somber.

"Because this was Doctor Pryce's favorite color on me," she protested as she climbed the steps of the mausoleum. "He said I looked more like a lady when I wore this, and I wanted to wear it for him." She was sobbing harder now, and Charlie felt like an idiot for making his sister cry even more. Charlie was wearing a pair of black slacks and a grey polo shirt. All of his clothes were bright as well, and he had to grab new clothes from the tailoring shop earlier that day. He sort of wished he had worn his baseball jersey after what Chris has said about Doctor Pryce; the baseball jersey was something he wore whenever he and Pryce went to play catch.

Chris stepped into the mausoleum, and as she caught sight of the coffin at the far end of the room she began to cry even more. The tears were blocking her vision, and since she wasn't paying attention to anyone else around her she ran into the person who was just getting ready to leave. She sniffled, and looked up at him with blurry eyes. "I-I'm so-sorry," she said in between her sobs. Charlie grabbed at his sister's arm and pulled her out of the way.

"Chris," he hissed in warning. "You have to watch where you're going!" Charlie looked up at the man, and smiled. "Sorry, mister," he began. "My sister is a clutz."

Chris pushed on her brother, and stuck her tongue out at him despite her tearful disposition she managed to take some sort of retaliation on her brother. "I am not a clutz, I'm just crying..." She sniffled again and looked up at the stranger. "I'm sorry though, I didn't mean to..."

All Duncan saw was a blur of pink before he felt something knock against his chest and stomach. He was a tall, gangly man, but not so easily knocked aside. He did lose a little air though. When he realized that the missile that had hit him was a young girl crying her eyes out, his surprised was immediately replaced with sorrow. The image of such a pretty little thing looking so damn sad gripped his heart and rattled it against the sides of his ribcage.

"Oh, no, it's alright.." he said, reaching out to put a hand on her shoulder just as a boy - he presumed her brother, as they looked alike - began tugging her away. When the girl informed her brother that she was not a klutz, and apologized to him again, he thought his torso might crack in half. People her age were not supposed to look that sad.

"Oh, darlin', s'alright," he said, and the sudden rush of complete sympathy he felt for her made the barest traces of his Scottish accent -- for Scotland was where he spent the majority of his life -- return. "Did you know Dr. Pryce very well? I'm very sorry for your loss.." he looked helplessly to Charlie, then back to Chris.

Charlie handed his sister some tissue he had stuffed in his pocket, and patted her back. "Doctor Pryce wouldn't want to see you crying, Chris," he said quietly. Chris simply nodded, taking the tissue to dab at her eyes, and then to blow her nose. The young girl looked up at Duncan, grateful that he wasn't angry that she had bumped into him, and smiled.

Nodding, she answered him, "We did." Chris sniffled and wiped at her tears again. "He took care of us when we first got here," she said proudly. Charlie nodded, and finished the sentence where Chris left off.

"And he played with us all the time." He beamed at the memory, though the smile faded when he glanced over at the coffin. He couldn't believe that Doctor Pryce was really dead; after all they had been through, the virus and the war, it sucked that he died because of a heart attack. Charlie glanced over at Chris, glad that she was finally beginning to calm down some.

"He was our friend," she said quietly. Chris looked over at Charlie, smiling softly. "Dad would have liked him," she said.

Charlie nodded, "Yeah, Dad would have. Mom would have just thought he was goofy."

Chris laughed a little, brushing back stray strands of hair from her face. "Mom would have thought he was a big kid stuck in a grown-ups body." She sighed deeply having finally stopped crying. Her eyes glanced up at Duncan, smiling again. "Thanks for coming," she said though she wasn't officially in charge. "I'm Chris, and this is Charlie." She pointed at her brother, and he lifted a hand in hello.

"Did you know Doctor Pryce," Charlie asked curiously. Not that it mattered one way or another, it was just nice to see so many people had come out to honor Doctor Pryce's memory.

Oh dear gods above, they were orphans? His heart strung a little tighter. Who were they here with? Surely they didn't go to wakes on their own? He knew children were insanely mature nowadays, but attending a funeral service was something adults didn't even want to do on their own, much less young children. Duncan was horrible at guessing ages; he assumed they were older than twelve, but younger than sixteen. He also realized they were 'the twins' that he'd heard of, at one point, and remembered one of them was human, and the other was not. He knew not which was which. They were very cute, though, despite their red eyes and sniffles.

"No," he said, blinking a little too much, "I didn't. I just came by to pay my respects, honestly." He frowned, his eyes shifting between the two young ones. It wasn't fair for them to lose a friend, not after everything they had been through just to get here. He hoped he hadn't offended them by admitting to 'crashing' the wake, even if it was open to everyone. He was nervous. Children sometimes didn't understand things as well as adults did when it came to situations like this - though these two seemed fine with his presence.

"But it's nice to meet you, Chris and Charlie. My name's Duncan. I'm sorry to meet you under these circumstances." He spoke to them like they were adults, even if his tone was a little soft and apologetic. He even offered them a handshake - Charlie first, then Chris, just to give her a little tiny bit more time to collect herself.

Dione and Open

Dione didn't know the dead man. Dexter did not know the dead man. So why were they at this funeral? That was a question that she hadn't quite answered for herself before deciding to come. It had been a last moment decision, a whim really. One could learn a great deal about a place by the way that they treated their dead, or so the old history professor had said so many times during her years in high school when they had studied Egypt.

Mummified bodies surrounded by servants and jars of food and all the finery of royalty; the afterlife was meant to be like the life that they had left behind. And what did this tell her about the place she had come to? That it was a lot like home. It rang dimly of the funeral she had gone to for her Grandmother. Granted, the service had been given in French, but the words weren't really that different. All about how the person who had passed on had gone to another, better, place and thus those who were left behind should not mourn over long despite their personal feelings because to do so was unnecessary. It was surprising how much one would remember when some random moment triggered it.

She could even remember the smell of the flowers, gardenias, all around the casket. Grandma had loved those flowers, so it seemed to make perfect sense. All Dione remembered thinking of them was how much they looked as though they were cut out of paper. Perhaps that was just because she felt everything about the whole situation had felt unreal.

Now this situation felt very odd indeed. The sounds of people that she didn't know and the remembered faces of people that she had seen there. Her mother had been their grandmother's only surviving child, so there had been much made of the twins being the extension of her legacy. Pity now it was just one of them and not both with the task of carrying things on. So very unfortunate indeed.

"It was a lovely service," she mused aloud.

You're thinking of Grandma.

"Yes. But that's over now. I think we should go." With that, she started away from the scene.

You haven't signed the guest book. Dexter reminded her.

"And what exactly would I say in it?" she asked, her tone irritated at the suggestion.

Sascha blinked and looked briefly over his shoulder to make sure the woman standing just a few feet to his left hadn't been addressing someone else. Not that he assumed she'd been speaking to him, either; in fact, she seemed to be holding a conversation- in French, no less!- with thin air. Given that she didn't appear outwardly distraught by the situation, he decided it was probably safe to approach her. Hers was an unfamiliar (and beautiful) face, after all.

He caught the tail end of her musings and paused for a moment, brow furrowing as he debated whether or not to intrude on her one-sided discussion. "Something consoling," he offered a little tentatively, hoping he'd guessed correctly as to the nature of her thoughts. "Those messages are meant for friends and family to see. If you're not one or the other, just leave a simple note of condolence." Sascha leaned toward her just slightly, extending a hand in greeting as a small, reassuring smile spread across his lips. "I'm guessing you're neither. Same here."

No, Sascha hadn't known Pryce personally; in fact, he'd never so much as spoken with the doctor. The only memorial service he'd attended prior to this one had been for Annie and Bella, and that had been traumatic enough for the fact that no physical remains had been recovered from the site, let alone interred. It was probably better that he'd had no connections to this man in this new world; even if he couldn't really mourn the loss of a relative stranger, he could still sympathize for the bereaved. Something about the fact that their world had suddenly shrunk so immensely created a strange type of bond amongst the survivors, and it just seemed wrong not to acknowledge the passing of someone as integral to the functioning of Elysium as a doctor.

Undaunted by the woman's seemingly sightless stare, he continued with his introduction. "Sascha Connolly. You'll have to forgive me, I'm not so great with funerals." He tilted his head curiously and watched her responses with close fascination. "Parlez-vous anglais*? French isn't my mother-tongue, so I hope I'm not butchering it too horribly."

Can he hear me, Dexter was surprised for the first time in ages really. Thinking Someone had HEARD him. No one had been able to hear him since he'd died except Dione. She couldn't see his facial expression, but his eyes were as big as dinner plates. Dione just shrugged at the thought and managed not to blush like a complete idiot at being addressed at all. It did very little except keep that blush for going up to ears and down her neck, confining it to the edges of her cheekbones. At least there it was still pretty.

"I didn't know him and I really don't know his friends." It wasn't that hard to admit to. "So how would I know what's consoling?" Her lack of connection to the real world always seemed to appear at the oddest moments. She could remember any number of formula phrases that she had heard over time. Perhaps now was the time when those would be appropriate. What had people written at Grandma's funeral? Try as she might, she couldn't remember the one for her parents if there had been one. So many people had been dying at the same time that the civilities of funerals had been forgotten in the rush to try and make it stop. She couldn't see his hand, but Dexter did what he normally did in these situations and nudged her to take the offered hand. Her eyes didn't move, but she closed her fingers around Sascha's hand, grateful in her own way for the help while also feeling as though she should be able to handle these kinds of things on her own.

"Dione Castel and I wouldn't be able to tell if you hadn't said something. About your French, I-I mean." Damn it and there was that stutter again. Only in English. So long as she was speaking French she was fine, but her English always gave away her nervousness horribly. Shaking her head, she let go of his hand and ducked her head to hide her face. It was her natural reaction to being out of sorts and she seemed to be that way all the time.

There may have been something, just the briefest of glimpses into Dione's thoughts, not Dexter's, that allowed Sascha to gauge the unspoken direction of her half of the conversation. It was only a passing flash of words in his mind, though, and he quickly dismissed it as one of his own thoughts; after all, he could only see into the minds of dogs, not humans. Communicating with the dead, now...that was Irei's territory.

He could also relate a bit to her uncertainty over expressing forced condolences to people she'd probably never met before. Many of Annie's co-workers and some of his own colleagues from the university had tried to show their support after the service, but there had been a lingering awkwardness when it came to speaking of the deceased. Sascha remembered the obvious discomfort on the faces of the mourners he didn't know as they tried to console him, even though he'd been so numb at the time that he couldn't recall any of their actual words for the life of him.

"I wouldn't worry about it," he replied in as reassuring a tone as he could muster, idly running his thumb over the back of her hand as the memory pulled him into a half-reverie. "You might consider leaving a name all the same, though, even without a message. The thought will be there, and it'll be a comfort to the mourners to know that even strangers came to pay their respects." He shook his head at the thought. "Once the initial grief wears off, anyway. Sometimes words just get in the way."

Sascha watched as Dione withdrew her hand and stuttered out a response before ducking her head away bashfully, and he couldn't help but smile at the endearing blush that had settled over her cheeks. A funeral was too solemn an occasion for him to really flirt full-on, and she seemed a little too skittish for such a direct approach. Nonetheless, he still thought it best to lighten the mood just a tad, and he ducked his own head down to follow her, trying to peer through the dark curtain of hair to make out her face.

"Why, thank you, Miss Dione. I visited France once and loved it so much that I decided to learn the language just in case I ever made it back. Guess I waited too long, though." His smile widened just a fraction as he reached out to tip up her chin with his finger. It was a fairly bold move considering they'd only just met, and he pulled his hand away in case the contact had been too much. "How is it that you know francais?"

Umeko [Narrative]

Umeko kept her stay short at the funeral. Sometimes she got too saddened and didn’t want to be seen crying, or in a mood she seemed unfamiliar with. In her stay in Elysium tears had seem foreign to her. She was very strongly advised by herself not to cry as easily as she used to. Death was something that she feared more than anything, but she stayed strong.

She approached Pryce with waves of tears in her eyes threatening to come out. Fight them she begged herself. Didn’t want to get tears on a dead mans suit now did she? Before she spoke, she inhaled and brushed aside strands of hair that moved in front of her face. Clasping her hands together she spoke.

“Wheelchair racing was really fun. I hope they have some wheelchair racing track in the sky. I wish I got to spend more time with you because annoying you a bit would have been awesome. Someday I will get that chance to not only annoy you but race you again, so what out, bub.” Umeko didn’t have much to say after that and she figured having only slight memorable words was better than trying to find more to say. She gave his cold hand a gentle touch before she moved through the crowd of people, giving condolences along the way.
