Who: Giles and Emily
Where: near the Plancks' forest cottage
When: early afternoon
What: Meeting again and having a serious discussion.

Emily pulled one of the chairs from the dining room outside to the front porch and covered it with a couple of blankets in order to make it more comfortable, adding two pillows. She sat down and covered her legs with another blanket, uncapping her pen and alighting it on her notepad as she prepared to think of more lesson plans for her young class. Every one of her students was absolutely adorable and she took special interest in Maddy because the girl was her direct connection with Malcolm. Unfortunately, concentrating seemed to be impossible at the moment - she'd have to work on lesson plans later when she was in a more focused mood.

Her thoughts wandered as she gazed into the lovely forest. It had been days and still she was in disbelief that she'd actually danced in front of everyone. Needless to say, she wanted to dance again... maybe a slow dance with Malcolm. No one had to be good to slow dance and they needed to do romantic things together more frequently. A familar figure appeared in the distance and Emily saw it to be Giles. It'd been a while since they had their interesting conversation and it never hurt to say hello at least. She rose from her chair, placing the pen and pad on it before heading towards the man. There was something hanging over him that she took a moment to decipher as she didn't know him that well.

"Hello, Giles," Emily said with a smile. "Remember me, Emily? I hope you've been well." If not, she took it upon herself to help as much as possible. There was also the possibility that they would just have a pleasant conversation, which was fine by her. "Keeping busy with fun things, I should imagine?" It seemed to her that he was the type to include a healthy balance of fun and work in his daily routine. Goodness, where was her manners? "And if you'd like some tea or something else to drink, I would be more than happy to make you some." She offered a small but affectionate smile to him.

Considering his headache had a better change going away by smelling grass than taking any of the medicine at the medical pavilion (at least in grumpy Giles’ opinion) Giles rested on his back and closed his eyes for a moment to try and think of some way to get his headache to go away. His day wasn’t too bad. Well, besides for realizing that there was a catch to every women he met.

“Blind? Jesus..friggin blind.”

He then jumped a little when he heard the sound of a familiar voice and sat up slowly, squinting his eyes to get used to the light. “Emily..” he let her word float on as he pretending to think. “Ah yes!” He nodded confidently. “The hot mom!” He pointed at her as he declared it. “It’s been awhile.” It had been awhile because of a snotty carrot top. Plus well because he was lazy. Mostly because of a snotty carrot top who by the way was old enough for him to kick her ass out. Damn empathy. He would feel bad if he left her bitching about, but it was tempting. He liked being alone and she was nerve racking the last time he saw her.

“Ugh. Yeah, tooonns of fun.” He rolled his eyes as he got to his feet. “How about you? Having a gay old time?” he thought about the tea and gave a playful smirk. “If you put some vicodin and some jin in it I’d love some tea.” He waved a hand lightly. “Kidding of course.” He paused for a moment. ”Unless you’re up for it.”

Emily's cheeks reddened a little as he called her a hot mom. She had forgotten about his candour although it was not something to be discouraged. Maybe he needed more tact, but she didn't know how to mention it politely. "I suppose," she said awkwardly and continued the conversation. "Yes, it has been a good while. I'd like to learn what's new for you. Something good, I hope." She wished the best for all her friends - yes, Giles was now a friend although they'd only met once before - and gave him a warm smile. Their conversation was bound to be less awkward this time since he'd stopped flirting with her.

Rolling his eyes was never a good sign, but she decided to wait before she worried about him. Learning the whole story was key and granted, he had to wait to tell her first. "I'm doing well. Bit stressed," Emily answered and furrowed her brow, concerned, at his answer to the tea. "I don't have any alcohol in my house. And I wouldn't want you to have a dangerous drink like that. What's wrong? No, wait, come with me." She led the way back to her porch, where she insisted Giles sit on the bepillowed and blanketed chair while she fetched another one from inside the cottage.

After a minute, Emily returned with a chair and a tall, cool glass filled with a fruit smoothie, the latter which she handed to him before she sat next to him. "It's not alcohol, but I find it's usually soothing. Now, please tell me what's on your mind. Miss Emily wants to help." No one was going to be troubled on her watch, that was certain. "I promise to be as objective as possible, unless it's something which I have direct experience in. Then I'll give you my honest opinion." Blunt honest opinion. She figured Giles might appreciate that.

At first he felt like talking about his problems may reduce him to being on the OC. With the smoothie it at least felt like Sense and Sensibility. So it was bitching with a tint of British class to it. He was an old fart, didn't they bitch at this time of day? Only in his case, it wasn't about kids playing in the yards or the fauns or whatever crapping in the grass. This was serious parent business between a woman who was the type to care and Giles, who well sucked at just spilling out issues.

"My daughter." He started, before glancing to the side. "Is a bitch." He coughed trying to quickly rephrase that as he took a sip of Emily's smoothie. "Wonderful drink by the way." He shifted a bit. "She's just pointlessly irritating. If she were Echo's age I'd probably be able to handle her. But she makes me wish I could set her outside in a cardboard box."

He threw the kind woman an apologetic look.

"I'm, I'm sorry to sound so harsh as a parent. But I went from free pervert to held by the nad dad."

Talking about issues that may be uncomfortable was something friends did, and Emily hoped that he liked her enough to reveal such personal information. She didn't know if she seemed very trustworthy, but she tried hard to seem that way. She fixed her gaze on him with the softest look she could make and listened to him speak. "Your daughter?" It slipped out before she could help it. His sudden confession made her blink. Wow, it seemed he hadn't got the whole unending parental love thing down pat yet.

He did like her smoothie; points to him for that. "How is she pointlessly irritating? What does she do?" She definitely had to have more information before coming to any conclusion. "I think it's a teenager thing; she needs to know her boundaries and how to push your buttons. Echo's starting to play with rebellion." She looked at Giles with a furrowed brow. "I found her drinking at the festival with the boy I'm taking care of too and it terrified me. Alcohol played a part in how she was conceived, after all." This was probably way too much information and her gaze fell to her hands. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have laid that all out on you and so quickly too."

"No need to apologize. It helps to have someone to commiserate," she admitted. "Such responsibility thrust on you is difficult, but you know your place in the world and are much more qualified to be a parent than I was at seventeen, believe me." She placed a gentle hand on his knee. "Speaking from my experience as a young woman, you should make an effort to get to know her, her interests, and support her in what she likes to do. My father and I adored the same films and we used to have movie nights every Friday. We were just scraping by, but we always managed to do that. But don't worry. Parenting really does have its rewards, even if it may not seem so obvious or worth it most of the time. You have someone to protect, to fight for.. and you should."

"She’s pointlessly irritating because she pointlessly likes to piss me off. Like she decides it’s an occupation, not just the ways of life. It’s like she waits awhile to see what pisses me off then she goes for it. I guess since she is eighteen I figure what the hell is the point for me to be her father.” He sighed then shook his head. “But I know I have to make up for not being around. At least that is what I tell myself.” Giles turned towards Emily when she felt like she gave him too much information about her daughter at the festival the other night. “No, no. It’s fine. I can understand how you feel about having a daughter who is maturing and growing fond of boys and trying things out. You see, I just have a grown pain in the ass. You actually grew attached to Echo from day one and have to watch her grow up and make sure she doesn’t mistakes that she may be oblivious to.” Giles laughed a bit. “You kind of have to wonder why the hell kids don’t see the mistakes right in front of them.”

God, that was probably the most open he had been in awhile. No, in forever. So it felt pretty strange. “I’m trying to see that reward. So far it feels like I got a game over in a video game.” He knew he was being negative and threw her an apologetic look. “I know I should protect her and everything. I just feel like I can’t. Plus if she is so into blaming me for everything, then clearly she should be able to take care of herself.”

Emily tried to see the situation from both party's perspectives. She could relate to Giles for having responsibility thrust upon him, because that marked most of her life, but she'd never talked back to her father. But Giles was her friend and she needed to support him as best as she could. "I guess that's just the teenager's way." His comment about making up for not being around hit very close to home and she honestly hoped Mathias would try harder in the future as Echo slipped deeper into the teenager years. "You will make it up to her. It's not enough to 'have' to do it; you have to want to as well. I'm sure your daughter is wonderful, and you'll see how wonderful she is once you start trying." She paused for a few seconds. "Echo's father is here in Elysium - I haven't seen him since before Echo was born, but I want him to experience being a father. And I want you to be happy being a father too, Giles." Yes, she'd had the different experience of raising Echo and growing attached to her, but... "Being a mother is different because I have all these instincts to nuture fixed inside of me. For men, I think it's something they have to practice at. Did you get to see your daughter as a baby? Or not at all?"

"It sounds as if you need to have a heart-to-heart with her. No holds or apologies, just lay everything on the table. If there is something specifically she blames you for that's true, maybe you need to own up to it. Or maybe she just needs a friend. But I think you have extra credits for a retry." Emily suddenly had an idea. "You and your daughter should come over to have dinner with us one of these days. I don't know if she'll be interested, but I hope that the offer might appeal to her. But just ask. I don't want to force you two into doing anything you don't like."

She wished she could say something really helpful. "I'm sorry if I haven't been of much help. But don't hesitate to continue talking. I think you'll feel much better for it," she said and took a sip of her smoothie. "May I ask what you were like as a teenager? Maybe your past experience will help you put the situation with your daughter into perspective."

Giles raised a brow when he heard Mathias was actually..here? He tilted his head fully towards her after taking a sip from her smoothie he was highly enjoying. “He’s here…after all that happened? That must be very difficult. You’re a lot better at working things out, so I hope things go well. I know I may not always be the best source for a venting buddy. But just come on by and I’ll be here. Even if I seem grumpy..That’s just me.” He admitted. Though he knew he could be an ass on the epic proportions side, he had to admit sometimes his bluntness could help.

“If he really wants to be in Echo’s life, I’d say let him. Just make sure he doesn’t upset her. I know from working at the hospital that teenage life is a hard time for kids to adjust knowing their lost parents. I’m one to talk, but it’s a delicate procedure.” He sighed when he thought about his own child as a baby. “No, I never saw her as a snipper. I knew my girlfriend was pregnant..but I left. I was too involved with the medical field.”

The empath agreed. Maybe he was just meant to be a friend. He was in no way going to be a father anymore. If he could do it, it would take some time. He raised a skeptical brow about dinner, but then agreed. “Maybe dinner is indeed a good idea.”

The Brit gave a big huff when he thought about what he was like in his teens. “I was an ass. No different than now. I mean I wasn’t as blunt with women. I was distant and just wanted to be in medicine. I was competitive and didn’t want any friends. All I did was hurt people.” There was slight regret in his voice as he admitted this.

Emily smiled weakly at Giles. "When he first came back, it was... difficult to say the least, but I had a couple of good friends who were kind enough to try to cheer me up. And Echo adores spending time with him, so things seem to be going well. See, I always hoped that she'd get to meet him once in her life and that's why I tried not to tarnish his image. It wasn't fair to her or him if Echo hated Mathias before she even met him." Her smile grew as he offered an ear for venting although he had a lot on his plate as well. "You're very sweet. Thank you. I'll keep your offer in mind. You'll receive treats in appreciative thanks, of course."

"I'll try to do that. And there's no way I am going to let him hurt her." She was lucky, because he genuinely seemed to want to see Echo more frequently and she hoped that he would make a decent effort to do so. Her smile faded as she heard that he had never seen his daughter as a baby. "I think that's a reason for her to be a little angry at you, putting your career in front of your family. In the long run, raising children is much more satisfying." She knew it wasn't really any of her business to be admonishing him, but his situation hit a little too close to home.

Dinner might work well and she hoped she could also be a friend should the girl need it. She realised then that she hadn't heard the name of Giles' daughter. "What's your daughter's name and how old is she?" Emily wondered. Why had Giles acted that way as a teenager? "It sounds like you had a difficult time at that age. Like you were lonely, too." Being distant and yet having a goal was different than being lonely, though. "Are you as distant now? You have good friends here, right?"

Giles laughed when he thought about having ‘friends’ here. “You’re shitting me right?” he wasn’t trying to be rude at all. He and the word friends were like Paris Hilton and the word virgin or legs closed. It was hard now for him to make friends since everything to him was a joke or nothing to him could come without sarcasm. “I mean..I have had encounters here on what I could call friends. I never have seen them again besides you. I am not like you. I don’t radiate kindness.” Of course he meant that in a very generous way. He just never had a normal way or wording things. He wouldn’t be Giles if he did.

“Her name is Marley by the way. She is eighteen and she took me on the other day like two lions after a piece of meet. I guess when you hit the age that declares you an adult you feel like you can take on the world.” He gave out a puff. “All you can really do is buy yourself a pack of cigarettes so you can legally have sex with that person you like you couldn’t..or shouldn’t have sex with before. If I could connect with her I could. It’s just like me having a motel room though and she’s ‘chillin’ out there.”

He bit into his lip. “You should maybe talk to her. Or maybe..Hell if I know. I’m not fun when I am actually filled with emotion. “ He stated with a wiggle of the brow.

She frowned momentarily. "I'm sure you'll see them again. You've probably just been unfortunate and haven't come across them yet." Staying positive for his sake was the best course of action even if he didn't believe her. She gave him a small smile at his compliment. "You may not think you radiate kindness, but I sense something positive in you. It's just hiding and waiting to emerge. And I'm definitely your friend, all right? Come on over any time." With that, she placed her hand over his gently.

Marley was a pretty name although something told her that Giles may not have chosen it and so she kept her thought to herself. Eighteen was still a difficult age and Emily's hand curled around his to comfort her. "Don't worry, you will some day," she said. "If you want me to try to talk to her, I will. And I won't hold it against you." Her gaze was soft as she looked at him again before continuing to drink her smoothie.
