Who: Aveira and OPEN
When: Late Afternoon
Where: Blacksmith and Weaponsmith Shop
What: Aveira is at work and gets a guest!

The smell of burning metal was very frank in the Blacksmith and Weaponsmith shop. To some it may be a little headache raising on nose after just about an hour or so, but to Aveira it was just as refreshing as the smell of the bakery. The workload was the bit of the headache. It wasn’t like back home where technology could give out a hand with the various weapons she enjoyed crafting. This was the old fashioned way. On the plus side, it was like creating art. Though it encouraged enough sweat to make you lose about ten pounds with just one making of the sword, it would be a true art piece for anyone to have.

The shop was set to Aveira’s liking and often times she would relocate anything any other shop workers would move. In her opinion it had a great appeal. The ordinary swords and daggers were neatly and horizontally placed around the shop in a ‘C’ like formation. They didn’t take long to forge and she figured since she pretty much made the table herself, it went where she pleased.

Double edged swords, or ethnic like swords such as the Kris or Katana that sometimes took days for Aveira to make rest in a nicely decorated table in the middle along with daggers with designs on them. In the far back were less harmful looking weapons like wooden swords for children or anyone who would fancy them. On the back wall, crossbows, lances, staffs and weapons of request were located there.

She sat at the table she always rested at, legs propped up with her trademark cigarette occupied hand that hung by her side. Aveira let out a prolonged sigh, smoke circling through the air. When she thought she heard a noise, perhaps hesitant footsteps only a brow quirked up. Her voice wasn’t tainted with rudeness, but perhaps a bit of annoyance. This had happened before. Did she look mean from behind?

“You know. The shop is open for a reason.”

It finally happened. His trusty carving knife, the one he had for years when he first arrived in Scotland, broke. The blade became a bit too rusty and Idehr had applied enough pressure for it to snap in two - very surprising and frustrating for the orc, who continually had to check his strength. His saw also had worked one time too many and decided to creak dangerously whenever he used it. There was no hardware store for him to visit and buy replacements, so Ide needed to go to the blacksmith. As stupid as it was, he hated the idea of just asking for new tools without paying for them or giving something in return, and searched for a suitable trading item. Nothing came to mind and he had no choice but to head to town with an energetic Maddy. He smiled as he looked down at her small pale hand in his large green one. Ever since he agreed to take the orphan in, she'd done nothing but make his life happier.

The girl liked going to new places with people she knew, although Ide insisted he hold her hand so she wouldn't touch anything sharp and cut herself. They entered the shop and the surroundings filled her with awe. There were so many pretty and shiny things all over the place! She looked with her eyes and not her hands as her mother liked to say, following Ide farther into the room. The sudden voice of a woman made him uncomfortable, she could see, so it was up to her to order the things he needed. "Hi?" the seven-year-old said. She let go of Ide's hand to find whoever spoke and quickly found Aveira sitting at the table. "Hi, miss. Idey wants a saw 'cause his is broke in places and a new knife for his carving. Please?"

Ide came up behind Maddy and heard what she said, looking at the woman who was apparently in charge of the shop at the moment. First impressions were key, of course. "I'll try to trade you something of equal value for your trouble," he said. "I do need a hand saw and possibly a log saw as well. They're getting too rusty to be of any use." Look at him ramble on. His hands twitched by his sides, desperately wanting to pull the hood of his sweatshirt over his head, but Maddy had insisted it be kept down. He hoped that the woman was all business and wouldn't mind stupid statements he may say.

"Can I watch you make the saws?" Maddy had watched Idehr do carpentry work and she suddenly became interested in how these metal things were made. "Do you have extra metal to use? How do you make the knives so sharp?" she wondered with wide, curious eyes. Maybe when she grew up, she could make weapons like these, or make pretty things out of metal, like hair brushes or candle holders or even chairs. The possibilities were endless!

Aveira turned her hand quickly away to vanquish her cigarette before she looked up at the two new guests. She wouldn't want the two breathing in the fumes from her cancer stick, especially the little lady full of questions. Her gaze was soft as well as her tone when she looked at the shy speaking young man and the girl. She couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt for sounding so rude. Perhaps she just was a little bitchy about the entrance customers made to her shop. Maybe it led her to believe they were frightened, when the logical answer was they were probably begining to look around from the minute they stepped in.

She stood up from where she was sitting and curiously tried to peek at Ide and gave a grin. "I'm not that scary am I?" she let herself tease at him, trying to make the air seem a bit less tense. "And of course I have some saws for you, don't worry about having to repay me. I like doing this, it sure passes the time. You do some handy work here as well? If so, even more reason to make it freebee. You need just a standard knife, about a footlong? A six inch or about a three inch a better fit?" Aveira turned to Maddy with somewhat of a hummed laugh.

"Quite the curious one, hmm?" She turned her head towards the area where she made her saws, there was quite a bit of metal stacked about. Some she found, some she traded. Some she actually just took from items of her own that were useless in the sanctuary. "If you need some spare metal, I'd be glad to offer. I have a good supply." She was suprised at how generous she was feeling, must have been the shy nature of the two. "I seem to have a specialty in finding metal, so I'm sure I wouldn't be at a loss." She turned her head towards her knives then back at Maddy.

"Well, after I make the knife using liquid hot metal, it's somewhat dull, so sometimes when I am feeling lazy I use a dagger to sharpen the newly made knife."

Idehr tried not to gape in surprise as the woman spoke to him without a second glance to his skin or anything. It was amazing! As soon as she spoke and grinned at him, he returned it with a happy one of his own. "On the opposite end of the scale. Quite beautiful," he said and his cheeks warmed as the comment slipped out without much thought. Maybe he was slowly getting better at talking to women by some miracle. Now, enough odd remarks; it was time to get to business. "Thank you." She was right about it passing the time, because he found carpentry to have the same effect.

"Yes, I do some carpentry," he responded to her question. "I am not that good. And three inches would be preferable, thank you. I'll use it for whittling, but if you know of a better type of knife, that would be great." He watched Maddy's face brighten with curiosity and decided to take a back seat to the conversation as the girl started to talk once again.

Maddy grinned. Curiousity was one of her strongest traits, her parents and now Malcolm and Ide said and she had no problems with that. It was so much fun to ask questions and learn new things every day. She looked where Aveira did and saw how much metal was there. "Wow, that's a lot!" she exclaimed. "I don't know if Ide needs any metal at the moment... I don't think so." She glanced at Ide for confirmation and he shook his head.

"Thank you, though," Ide added. "I will be happy to give you anything you'd need." It was always good to form contacts like this; networking, he seemed to remember the word his mother used years ago. He was impressed with her skill of finding metal and listened to Aveira's explanation about making a knife. "What is your favorite item to craft?" Curiosity also got the better of him and he actually did not mind starting a conversation like this. "Is it hard to learn?"

This gave Maddy an idea. "Oh, lady, you should teach Idey! He's really strong and really good at making stuff and maybe you want the help." Plus, if Idehr got to help, Maddy might be able to watch. How fun would that be! He slipped his hands into his pockets as she knew he did when he was embarrassed and she giggled. "Please? And can I watch?" That question earned her a look from Ide, but she didn't care.

Aveira's favorite color was green, so she smiled to herself when she discovered the sight of Ide's skin. She knew this place held many species and she highly doubted such a soft speaking gentleman with a child was a threat. Though she could be brutal with words at times and downright rude, she wouldn't ask him if her speculation was correct on him being on ogre. "She's quite adorable." That she did share, before tugging at the top of his hoodie. "You could do two things for me. Take your hood down, tell me your names..oh and perhaps firewood does help if you ever have any spare...hmm shame on me that's three." She folded her arms with a smirk. "Of course I'm kiding about number one, do as you wish. The woods for heating up the metal to make it melt. Sometimes it takes quite awhile and wood runs out fast."

It was really nice to have curious people vocalize just how curious they were. Aveira thought for a moment what her favorite thing was to craft. "I'd have to say the kris is my favorite. It's a challenge. The sword is from Persia. You see the edges are like tiny daggers and one mistake makes it a sword with a rather unimpressive flaw. I started making weapons when I was thirteen. I was too eager to get good so it was very tough. But if your patient and let others teach you, it will seem easy. "

It made her perk up that Ide would want to learn how to craft metal to make weapons, or rather anything. She was better with weapons though she could teach how to make anything. "If your up for it, I wouldn't mind teaching you." He was good looking that earned him points she teased to herself. "And of course you can watch, follow me." She began to walk towards her work area, but turned towards the two. "Make sure to follow me and be carefil. Oh and the name is Aveira."

If he knew that she had no problem with his skin color... actually, he had no idea what he'd do. Aveira's approval of Maddy pleased him greatly, because he just so happened to think that Maddy was the cutest girl ever, as biased as he was. He gave her yet another grin to her before speaking. "I think so too." Ide glanced at Maddy, though she was more interested in looking at a curved sword at the moment. As for the blacksmith's requests, Ide could manage all three. "I'm Ide and this is Maddy. I can stop by tomorrow with firewood because I don't have any cut at the moment, but it won't take that long to do." The only problem he had with chopping firewood was the trees around him wailing that it was cruel and it took a while to stop them complaining.

He and Maddy waited as Aveira chose what she liked to craft best and was not surprised that he had no idea what a kris was. Persian sword, well, that sounded interesting and complicated if the edges neeed to be tiny and sharp. "Challenges like that are really something. I'm like that with carpentry most of the time as I've learned all of what I know from trial and error... and my handy DIY book." Patient? He would be patient, especially if she taught him. "No problem here. Learning something fantastic like smithing gives me all the patience I need."

Ide replied in the affirmative that he wanted to learn and glanced at Maddy to make sure she followed the two into the work area. The girl was quiet, but he could tell she was excited to be able to watch. Ide would have to make sure she was a safe distance away from the forge before they started. Once they were there, he slipped off his hoodie to reveal a plain black shirt underneath along with decently muscular arms. "Ready when you are," he said and ran his hand through his hair to get it out of his face. "What're we going to start off with?" He wanted to know the name of the item he was about to tackle - create, rather.

Well quite honestly, the orc’s impressive build proved he could make pretty much anything. But considering this was something somewhat unfamiliar it would be best to start with something small. She ran a hand through her hair as she pondered the thought of what to make while giving a smile proving she was pleased to meet the two.“Well, let’s start with a dagger?” She lifted up one made out of wood and handed it to Maddy. It wasn’t all too dangerous, the tip was dull and it seemed like a fun enough toy to entertain a young child. “Here, feel free to keep it.”

Aveira turned towards Ide, pacing just a bit. “Well, I will try to help you the least as possible and try not to be too bossy. Believe me; I have a tendency to be very bossy. If I take too much control, you won’t learn as fast. I remember I got frustrated with limited help, but I learned quite faster.”

The vampire’s head craned towards the area of forging. It looked like an open drawer space with massive coal inside. Giant pieces of wool fueled a spectacle of fire that furiously worked to stay alive. Aveira had to frequently put on heavy gloves and goggles to toss more wood to keep the fire alive. Back home technology took its place and extreme temperature would melt the metal in several minutes at the most. The forging process here took several hours at times.

When she figured Ide knew that was their first step she began to walk towards the metal a safe distance away. “Okay, the first thing we need to do is find a piece of metal a good shape for a six inch dagger!” To make it easier, the metals were stacked on elevated tables in separate shapes and sizes. “We need to let it burn in the general size before we shape it after it forges!” She hoped she wasn’t yelling too loud, the old fashioned “machine” was just a bit loud. She gave him a keen smile, folding her arms with a raised brow. “Well! Pick a piece of metal!” She was careful about her teeth, part of her was fearful he wouldn’t feel as friendly around her if he knew she was a vampire.

A dagger sounded just fine, and Ide was happy to agree with the suggestions. "All right," he said, watching as Aveira gave Maddy a wooden dagger. It was harmless enough and the girl looked pleased to get something to play with while the adults worked on the smithing. He found calling himself an adult in his mind to be strange and decided not to do it again... Maybe he would when he was thirty, perhaps. Maddy swirled the wooden dagger around, no doubt imagining a scene in her mind and playing it out. Once again, he was struck by how adorable she was.

Now on to business. He glanced at the woman as she spoke about trying not to be so bossy and maybe being bossed around by her wouldn't be so bad. "I don't mind. I just hope I won't completely mess a good piece of metal up," Ide said, worried. Supplies were precious here and could not be wasted just to satisfy his whims. He followed her gaze to the forging space and his heart pounded faster from nerves. He needed to get this right somehow, for the sake of his pride. Really, really needed. Not as if Ide was trying to impress her.

Ide followed her, with Maddy trailing behind, and listened to the instructions for the first step. Finding a good piece of metal. He inspected the pieces on the table and picked one that looked a little larger than six inches. Perhaps he needed an inch extra all around for leeway, though he had absolutely no idea if his idea was correct. Holding out the piece of metal out to her, he wondered if he should move somewhere and immediately start working. That would be impossible for him, so he was being silly. "Is this all right?" he asked. Ide was more tolerant of vampires now than he had been before because one of his first new friends here was a vampire. A very sweet vampire at that, and he hoped Aveira was as well.

Aveira gave a wide smile, not even thinking about her teeth. She just was so impressed. He already seemed to be getting the hang of it! “You know, before you know it, I am going to be pestering you into getting into my shop and helping me out. That will be perfect. Sometimes when the metal hardens it may take away some of the metal so we may have a shorter dagger than we intended. Mind you, you would still be a rather nice dagger that we could create, but it wouldn’t be what I instructed and it would be my fault.” She gave a playful wink. “Can’t have that now can we?”

She took a long breath of air and drew her self close to Ide. She knew it was weird, but she didn’t want Maddy to hear. “This part is a real pain in the ass to be blunt. From here on in it gets a bit rough. Not to mention time absorbing.” She drew away with her head down, feeling a bit weird she got so close but she was being considerate for a child. “We need to ‘draw’ the sword. I guess it is somewhat like tracing, only more tedious but rewarding in the end!”

She walked towards the area where the heat was ever more evident and pulled her hair fully back. She gently took the piece of metal from Ide’s hands. “Here. Let me show you what you must learn to do. It does take patience and practice.” She gave a fond chuckle. “God, I used to get so angry doing these steps because of the time and effort, but when you are done, you will be proud!”

She began hammering the sword fiercely, the metal hammering loudly over the loud baking noise of the swords, daggers and various weapons being made. “You need to hammer it for a while to give it a bit of shape!” She said in a raised voice. “Then when you try this we need to heat it for a bit and repeat these two steps for a while!”

Sadly, she didn’t tell him that the next step after their feverish stop and go of hammering and heating (she always thought that sounded funny) could take up to twenty four hours. Guess he would have to stop by more than he thought. She hid a bit of a smile as she turned towards him slightly to hand him the hammer.

“Well, batter up..”

He noticed her fangs, though it was difficult for him not to see them, and blinked as he heard her talk about persuading him into helping out at the shop. It surprised him a little that he didn't mind the sound of that. Helping people out was just something he liked to do and if it meant trying something new and exciting like this, all the better. "Fine by me," Ide said with a grin. It sounded like precision and guessing how the metal would form the item was important and he nodded at her comment. "I'll try not to let that happen." Promising that might not have been necessary, but he wanted to reassure her that he was very careful when it came to crafting.

Her sudden proximity made him nervous and his eyes were wide with curiosity as he listened to what she had to say. Oh, language. Ide was grateful that Aveira watched what she said around the girl because he'd rather not have her learn cuss words until much, much later. "All right. I'm ready," he said. There was nothing quite like the determination of an orc, especially one who wanted to impress someone. Drawing... no, tracing the sword. He already looked forward to that and followed Aveira, glancing back at Maddy to make sure she remained in one place. There were lots of dangerous things for her to touch and he didn't want to take any chances.

At least she warned him. "I'll try my best." There were times when his temper got the best of him if he was tired enough, but he was sure that it was not about to happen here. He nodded, excited to be moving onto the next step. His father would have been proud to see him learning something useful, if it meant the possibility of creating a blessed, curved dagger which orcs used for hunting. Aveira started to hammer the metal hard, and he wondered if she was using all her vampiric strength in order to do so. He watched as she continued and furrowed his brow as she handed him the hammer. An important question had to be asked.

"I can't break it, can I?" he wondered. "My strength as an orc is more than a vampire's and I don't want to mess it up. Sometimes I don't know my own strength." He wasn't bragging, simply stating facts. Ide approached the dagger and started to hammer, not as quite as hard as Aveira due to nerves. "Should I do it a lot harder or a little harder?" Was it bad of him to want her to stand right next to him like she had before?

Aveira smirked at the orc lightly. It even showed in her eyes. “That shows how much I don’t even care about your skin and race and everything else. I forgot about your strength.” She walked so she was across from him and folded her arms but tried not to stand in a manner that may be intimidating. “Yes, it can break. Metal is strong but we are in set back a bit as far as its strength.” She sat up on a small ledge and swung her legs just lightly, feeling the light air behind her knees. “Hit it. Just a bit hard. If you think you feel the metal feel weak underneath, be a bit gentler. I always hear a different noise if the metal is getting weaker. But then it has only happened once when I was hammering a piece top hard, so..”

She looked down sheepishly and drew her hair back before asking slowly. “It must be pretty wonderful.” She bit her lip carefully. “Being so strong and all.” She set her hands in her lap. “It’s also nice you don’t care that you have a bloodsucker talking to you.” She winked. “I’m the nicer of kinds. I do chores and everything.” She teased. “I just am learning to make jokes, that’s all. I'm still in the training wheels of dealing with fangs and everything.” She sighed, motioning for him to hammer. “Now, go on and tell me what it’s like to be so strong. Do you sometimes break things on accident? I’d rather be strong than fragile if you ask me. Especially during these times.” She tossed a small piece of metal at him to try and distract him. “You know, boss’ opinion counts.”

He'd never met anyone who blatantly stated that they didn't care about his skin being green and hearing her say that took him aback for a couple of moments. Did she really mean that? It was incredible! For some reason, he glanced at Maddy, who grinned and waved at him from her spot and he returned the grin before carrying it on to Aveira. "It's an easy thing to forget," he reassured her. Okay, metal could break, so he had to be extra careful from now. Ide listened to her instructions before he started to hammer. "All right, thanks. I think I can do that." A test swing was required and Ide hit the metal once to hear a dull clang - that seemed to be a reasonable sound for it to make.

If she thought being so strong was wonderful... maybe he needed to go along with it. He could understand why a vampire would want to be strong, stronger than the others in order to show her superiority. Aveira seemed like she didn't care about something like that. "I guess." Ide's modesty was showing again. "One of my friends is a vampire and he's one of the nicest people I've ever met. I'm lucky a second time." He wondered how long it'd been since she was turned and figured asking was impolite. It was difficult to imagine being normal and suddenly...not.

"I'm sorry you have to deal with something so hard. But at least here you can go out under the sun just like normal, yeah?" Ide felt like he was doing a horrible job of conveying his sympathies and turned back to the piece of metal to continue hammering not-so-fiercely. Five hits passed as he thought of how to answer the question. "I have broken many things, mostly when I was younger. And when I worked at a farm in Scotland, I accidentally broke bridles, shears, shovels sometimes...That was quite embarrassing." He glanced at her before focusing on the metal once again. "Being strong is useful with carpentry, though. And giving piggyback rides," he added with a grin at Maddy. "What matters to me most is protecting people I care about."

Aveira couldn’t help but smile fondly when thinking about the sun. “I remember how upset I was when I learned I couldn’t be in the sun. You know, back in New York. I saw everyone outside, playing or shopping, or doing what they wanted and I was stuck being in the inside. I was so miserable I couldn’t take it.” She grinned. “Then when I got here and they told me I was safe, I thought it was a joke. But when the sun rays hit my skin and there was no burn. I’m telling you I think I took naps outside for weeks to make up for the days I lost. I didn’t think I was a ‘sun person’ until that moment. I think a world without you having the sun really darkens you no matter how much you deny yourself of your liking to it.” She stated, looking over to Ide.

When Ide spoke of tending to people he cared about, Aveira smiled with a nod, looking to the side. “You and I have a lot in common. I used to work in the force. It was my job to care if I liked it or not. But I protected people because I wanted to and that was all that mattered. It can be dangerous, you know? That’s what got me to where I am.” She sighed. “Sometimes I guess sacrifices are made to save lives. It can be painful, but everything happens for a reason, I guess.”

She shook her head lightly, God. She felt like she was being horribly depressing. “I’m glad you came here. You’re wonderful company.”

As he listened to her speak, her words tugged at his heartstrings. She knew what it was like to be excluded, though it was a different type of difficult exclusion than the one through which he'd suffered. His brow furrowed with concern. "I'm sorry. That must have been awful," he said. He was glad she could be out in the sun in Elysium- in fact, this place seemed to give quite a few people second chances. "I guess the only thing you have to worry about now is sunburn." Could she still get sunburn? "If that's possible. But yeah, it's easy to take something like the sun for granted until you find yourself without it. Or parents." That wound, even ten years old, was still fresh in his mind.

A couple of butterflies fluttered in his stomach as she said they had a lot in common. "Must have been hard," said Ide, his opinion of her growing fonder by the moment. "Protecting people you don't know is very honorable." His words were nothing short of sincere. She said that sacrifices had to be made, but as a vampire, hadn't she essentially died to protect someone else? If that was what happened. He thought it was rude to ask about how she was turned. "I used to think that wasn't true, but now... things are good for me. I'm sure they'll be good for you too within too long."

Ide blushed at her compliment and was about to say something in return when Maddy appeared at his side and tugged on his arm. "Idey, I'm really thirsty. Can we go get something to drink?" she said. When Ide reluctantly agreed, she turned to Aveira and gave her a small smile. "Thank you for the toy. It's really nice."

"And thanks for the lesson," added Ide. "I'll see you later?" It was more hopeful than anything else. He took his hoodie and bid her a goodbye before he and the girl left the Blacksmith's in the direction of the cafe, his heart still beating hard in his chest.
