DivineDuckling touched on it. It's a good essay series, but if you're a Kairi fan, I suggest that you don't read it lest you get pissed off.
But this is interesting. The fundamental failing of Sora/Kairi is, as DivineDuckling says, Sora sees Kairi as safe, because Namine's not "safe" for him.
Which led me to think.
There's so much about Kairi that's unsaid and unwritten and not shown, and the little that is there is not very good. I have to wonder, if Kairi saw Sora as being just as safe as she is for him. It makes a fuckton of sense to think just that.
Perhaps the Princess of Heart thing runs counter to Kairi's nature, and it probably does. Maybe it runs so counter to her nature that she merely dissociates from the world around her and focuses on Sora because that's the way she was taught as a Princess of Heart.
Perhaps she liked Riku or someone else, but The Powers That Be in the KH world saw that Riku wasn't "safe", so she has to settle for Sora.
Maybe that's it, maybe I'm reading too much into it, maybe I'm being defensive, but..fuck. It makes a metric fuckton of sense as to why neither Sora nor Kairi seem all too enthused about being together in the game. makes so much sense that Kairi probably doesn't even really like Sora as much as he's "safe" to like.
Maybe Kairi didn't even like boys at all? Maybe her affections were toward another Princess of Heart (like Jasmine) or one of her own attendants, but of course, a Princess who likes other girls is strictly verbotten, so Kairi does what she thinks people want her to do: Make Sora her whole world. Problem is, it ain't love. Sora and Kairi don't even love each other in that way that I can see, it's just that they're not so much people in love as much as they're reading a script in which they are playing two people in love.
So Sora/Kairi's doomed to fail. Not necessarily because of Kairi's lack of on-screen development. Because if the most fundamental thing about a significant other is how "safe" they are, something's horribly fucking wrong there. The awesomeness that could've been Sora/Namine and/or Riku/Kairi is sacrificed on the altar of a Fairy Tale Ending.
Which makes me sad because Kairi's my favorite character, and I just know they could've done better with how she was handled. I get the feeling that they'd strip Namine of her characterization, too. All in the name of having a nice, safe hetero-love interest for Sora, and I think that's the reason why they handled Kairi so fucking badly. Because if they allowed her to reach her full potential, if they allowed her to be a fully-actualized main character, they'd have to kill her off or make her lose her spine in the name of becoming "safe".
