"Men are nothing but trouble," Warren agreed with a nod. "Plus they'd have to be best friend approved and I can't help but think for the two of you, that is one tough test to pass." He wasn't entirely sure what he was missing in that conversation but didn't feel brave enough to question it. It really wasn't his business anyway. "My word, Kitty. Second? I have to agree with Paige. You may want that responsibility but with everything else you've got going on? I don't know. I think you've got enough to worry about right now." Again, he was missing something there. Who was Kitty calling that refused to answer? Again, unless she offered the information freely, not his business.
"I want to say there's no way that you'd be denied, but I've heard it's a tough process to go through. And it should be when you think about it. If just anyone could adopt there would be a lot more abuse and exploitation in the world than there is today." He knew nothing about June, only that she and Kitty fit together like any natural mother and daughter should. It would be a damn shame if the system denied her. "I know you're worried about money, but have you thought about getting a lawyer? They have ones at low rates and even some who do pro bono, especially if things are slow, they need a better public image, or are right out of law school. It's something to look into."
Paige's question shocked Warren so much that all he could do was look at her for a moment, wide-eyed. This was the girl who'd always been shy around him, awkward and nervous. Where had this new Paige come from? His surprise melted into a grin, and Warren shook his head. "No, ma'am. I like women too much to ever be gay." And before Kitty could intercede with any type of comment, he gave her a stern look. "JP and I are friends and we have fun together. Verbally. That's as far as it goes." With an arrogant smile that was clearly an act he added, "At least on my end. I couldn't blame him if it went deeper on his end, though." His brow knit. "That sounded entirely more inappropriate than I meant for it to." It wasn't easy to fluster Warren, but Paige's question had almost succeeded. He took a sip of his coffee to regroup. "You'll both find the man you're supposed to be with eventually."
When Kitty grabbed his hand, he gave it a squeeze back and smirked. She could be so adorable at times, just like a kid sister. "We're both here for you, Kit. Anytime you need us, all you have to do is yell. You should know that by now."
