The X-Men hadn't asked him to come along to recruit the kid, or at least drag him into the school. That was okay. Logan had a final exam to give and anyways, in the middle of the day, Gotham had to be fairly safe and he didn't need to tag along to stand in the back and scowl. And maybe talk about the art program if they left him alone with the kid. Given that the art program amounted to would-be artists doing whatever they damn well pleased and the teacher rewarding them based on effort, it wasn't exactly a good sell.
Still, he wanted to scope out the neighborhood, and Gotham in general. What the hell, he was even being responsible and waiting for the weekend, and it made a damn nice drive down to New Jersey. He wasn't very well the sort to sleep well anyways.
Gotham had a feel to it that tugged at the back of his mind, and it made him grumpy; it was one thing when it was New York and he was turning a corner and expecting a certain restaurant but New York changed all the damn time, but when it was an entire city that he had no memory of except deep in his bones, nothing he could jab a finger at, he was left chasing impressions all the damn night.
It made him ornery enough that when he wandered down a road he thought should have been kept up a lot better than it had been - pretty flowers in pots along the street lights, softly hissing with the gas - and two shady-looking muggers jumped out of the alley in front of him, it was a relief.
He popped out the claws and pointed them at the tiny knives the muggers were carrying. "Drop those."
