The wind blustered against the brick wall nearest to where Billy sat cross-legged. He turned the pages in the book on magic he had checked out of the library. Why he bothered with it though, he didn’t know. It was rubbish. None of the incantations or techniques in it had worked at all. It was some sort of wishy-washy feel-good empower your mind new age stuff; nothing real or concrete, not like he needed anyway. He sighed in frustration and slammed the book shut, standing to gather his things. It was getting close to curfew and Billy didn’t want to get in trouble for being late.
As he loaded up his flashlight, candles, and other accoutrements, a strong gust rippled across the rooftop garden that he was using to practice. He initially paid it no mind until he moved to load up the book. As he bent to pick it up, Billy noticed that the wind had blown it open to one of the later pages he hadn’t read yet. He stared at it for a moment, curious. The image on the page was of a tall man with dark hair and a long face. His lips were twisted in a smirk and his green eyes were colored the same as the outfit he wore.
Billy threw the strap of his messenger bag over his head as he bent down to pick up the book. The wind gusted again as his fingers brushed the page, but it did not shift. Billy picked up the tome and stood, looking at the figure once more before looking to the title of the page.
“Loki, god of mischief,” he breathed aloud as his eyes scanned the words.
