Who: Maria and Ollie
When: 6/1/2020 [Future!Retro]
Where: O'Red's Tavern, NYC
What: Maria has adjustment issues with losing an important organ. Ollie sorta knows how to deal.
The whiskey burned down her throat, and Maria dropped the glass hard down onto the grimy bar, and nudged it towards the bartender. "Another," she said, voice harsh and thick with the whiskey that had come before. The bartender looked at her, wiping a glass, and then silently poured her another. Maria lifted it, saluting the ex-Marine, and slugged it back.
Her eye burned. Not the one she still had, nothing so trite as tears. It was the one that was gone, the one beneath the black eyepatch because apparently the Director of SHIELD needed to have an eyepatch. The parts that were healing were itching, new skin and flesh growing, and even having the courtesy to do so cleanly. She wanted to rub her eye, rub out the itch, but all she's feel was her knuckle sinking into the sunken hole in her skull.
It had been a bad mission. There was nothing to get around it; everything had gone bad, and it was a very thin comfort that going into the field had helped her team survive. She'd lost her eye. Literally lost it; there was nothing in the socket now, nothing but skin and bone. SHIELD surgeons were good at putting tiny pieces back together, but all they could do for her was scrape out what remained of the eye and stitch her up.
She stared at the glass, reached for it again, and her fingers bumped it against wrong, made it skid against the bar until she could get her fingers around it. With a sneer, Maria felt the edge with a fingertip, let it curve into her hand. Depth perception, apparently, was a wicked bitch.
