Traveling in the Old West could be a grueling affair. It could be uncomfortable, there was always dirt on everything, camp fire cooking didn't always turn out, and the weather could be a hassle. The trip could be slowed when people became sick, wagon wheels broke, livestock strayed or died.
It was always dangerous as well. While people were expected to keep up with the pace, many were not so harsh as to leave a party of travelers completely alone and would do their best to make sure no one was left behind to die, as much as common sense would allow. Those who were not only did not have the safety net of a variety of people to help when odd things went wrong, but were the easy targets for bandits and hostile natives.
This train of travelers had been fairly lucky. There was a fair number of them, which meant they were a much more intimidating target. Because, sure enough, many of the merchants had the money to keep hired guns with them. The numbers had grown with each town they had passed through, people looking to strike West during the traveling season as soon as a large enough van came through that would allow them to join. Now the whole mess of people from all sorts of walks and wagons burdened with new goods was descending into town, and the excitement of the travelers and those who knew travelers often brought money and business set the travel-sore company's spirits higher.
The taverns were going to be busy tonight.
