"Daddy can we go see the puppies?" Lian gave a pull on her dad's hand, as she tried to guide by him force towards the room that the puppies where in. Roy had been prepared for this - mostly, so he stood his ground and gave a shake of his head.
"Ground rules kid, before we go in to see the puppies." He crouched down so that he and Lian were on the same level. And held up a finger. "We have one rule about puppies, remember what it is? Its -"
"We can't have a puppy." Lian finished for him, looking slightly exasperated. Roy didn't blame her, they had been over this before. Several times before, but he wanted things to be clear before they went into the room with the sure to be adorable baby dogs. Without prompting Lian went on; "And we can't have a puppy because we live in an apartment. And we don't have room."
"That's my girl."
He paused for a second, he felt - well not old. But all responsible, It was true about the not having the room, and there was also the fact that they didn't have the time. Well Roy didn't since Lian was four, and any and all dog related care would have fallen to Roy. Between work - and well work Roy honestly felt like he hardly got to see the inside of his apartment lately. Hell if this thing of Ollie and Luke's hadn't been going on today, Roy probably would have been volunteered hours at that spy school open house.
Enough with being the responsible adult. He looked down at Lian; "So no to a puppy, but you know what's a yes? Yes to ice cream for lunch, okay?" There things felt right with the world again, he felt like he was the cool parent again.
