"Now, take your opponent and grasp them firmly under the chin and arm. As you throw yourself back, you will snap key vertebrae and render your target helpless. You can also do a varied move in which the neck..."
Teddy grabbed the remote and turned the TV off quickly, feeling sick. "Okay. No."
Mrs. Altman looked up from packing her briefcase, wearing a very nice lavender, business skirt outfit today. "Martial arts?"
"Not any I will be doing." Teddy said grumpily as his socked feet stepped back to the kitchen. His coffee cup was empty at least, which meant he was more awake. Still, it was already noon. He'd slept a solid twelve hours.
"I'm not going to complain about that," she said with a smirk. "You could never so much as hurt a spider."
"Hey, spiders fill a valued eco-niche."
"They still don't need to be in my house."
Teddy shrugged, rinsing his cup out. "Which is why I put them outside." He stretched, arms reaching high. "Think I'm going to hit the library, see if I can't find any material that isn't... you know, snap a person in half."
"You might look into first aid as well."
"I did find one book that wasn't bad on that. Wouldn't mind getting a copy of it for the others to look at."
"Oh? Good." Teddy felt her hand shove money into his. She just smiled at his stubborn, deadpan look. "Go to the bookstore then. Probably get yourself another coffee while you're there, my little grump."
Teddy sighed as she leaned up to kiss his forehead. He was taller than she was now, and hardly a little kid anymore, but he only made incoherent mutterings to the fact. She just smoothly swept up her briefcase, heels clicking on her way out the door. Teddy called after her. "Good luck on the sell."
"Are you kidding?" She said with a wink over her shoulder. "This couple is already calling the house 'their home'. It's a done deal. See you, sweetie. Tell Billy hi for me."
Teddy looked at his toes. No Billy today, not unless it was much later. He had family obligations and something about prepping for school. So if he didn't keep himself busy, Teddy was going to go nuts.

School shopping was going to be useful. The backpack he had on was starting to fall apart. He took the bus to the subs, a red cap over his blond hair. It was nice weather out, but he was wearing a white long sleeve under his t-shirt. Soon it would be fall. That meant school and cooling weather.
Teddy wasn't too fond of cold weather, but he did love New York. He watched people as he traded rails, enjoying the diversity and different moods of the other commuters. He'd lived quite a few different places as a kid before they had settled in to the active hub of the city, and he had long since decided New York City was awesome. There was just something different about the people, a certain underlying beat and liveliness to it. He couldn't help but be fascinated by the culture of it all.
And he could change to match any of these faces, or be any random face.
He had done that often, practicing his morphing skills. It was easy, perhaps to a frightening degree, and interesting. People behaved differently, paid attention to demeanor, gesture, expression, and even clothing would merit different responses from others. The only thing Teddy didn't really practice was looking like a girl. He was self-conscious enough, and he only needed to watch to realize that girls received much different attention than guys.
But no, not today. There was a comfort in being anonymous, but he would keep to his true shape. Today, Teddy was just going to be Teddy. Eventually he would have to work up the nerve to show his team just how precise his morphing skills were, but he was still shy of revealing his ease at mimicking. He'd dropped a heavy hint of it to Billy. For now, that was enough.
It just hadn't worked out well the last time he revealed to someone he could change faces.
Lunch, coffee, and then he browsed books at his liesure. He did find an excellent one on aikido that showed a lot less violent locks and throws. He was still nervous about hurting people, and who knew? Maybe the team would be interested in some of it alo. It seemed to work well for people without uncommon strength. Teddy always had to be mindful about how much force he was exerting. A big reason why he was never interested in playing football. It looked fun, but some things were just outright unfair when it came to his abilities.
He found an even better book on first aid application. It was thick and heavy, but after looking it through he felt it was worth the money for it. Next he looked at some sports books, especially on weight lifting. That was problematic. He wanted to make sure his muscles were defined, but he was having trouble finding things to lift that actually challenged his muscles the way he wanted. The older he was getting, the stronger, and the less he needed to use his morphing abilities to stack on the muscles. The week after the frost giant invasion especially had honed him some.
After looking through some nutrition books but not making his mind up on any of them, he left to browse the shopping districts at liesure. It was getting on toward evening by the time he stopped to watch some street performers. Overall, not a bad day.
