BACKDATED
Who: Mara and Seth
When: Last week
Where: Their home
What: Arriving in New Salem
"Home sweet home," Seth announced as he pushed the door open to the large house that had been in his family for generations. It had been years since anyone had lived there, all the furniture in the place covered in sheets to keep it clean, but the coven had ensured it had been kept up over the years. Still, it had the coldness of a place that hadn't been a home for quite some time. It needed some warmth, some life breathed into it, to make it truly habitable. But if history had taught him anything, it was that the redhead at his side was capable of doing precisely that in a fraction of time. Of course the fact that she wasn't entirely happy being here might make that a little bit tricky. She'd been pouting ever since they had left the states and hadn't stopped yet.
"I know, it could use a little work but...." Seth glanced over at his daughter, forcing the frown upon his lips into a smile for her sake as he added, "It'll be great when it's done."
----------
Mara raised an eyebrow when her father called the Addam's family mansion thier new home. This was the last place she wanted to be, and had made sure her father knew just to what extent she was unhappy about this. But here she was and there was nothing she could do about it...not that it was going to change how much she hated it.
"I'm sure...it's going to cost you a lot huh." She said as she peeked inside and then scrunched up her nose, looking back up at her dad. "You know it's like...probably full of spiders." She said with a sigh and then leaned against the outside of the house.
----------
"Probably," Seth agreed, resisting the urge to roll his eyes. Mara had expensive taste. She always cost him a lot of money. Thankfully he HAD money to spend, but that didn't mean that he liked having to do it. Still, if redecorating would make her happy.... "There aren't any spiders," Seth said sternly, then reached down to take her hand and pull her with him into the house. "The... non-gifted members of the coven have been in to clean it at least once a week since it's been empty." He said the term as if it were a bad word. In a way, it was. As helpful as the non-gifted members were, they weren't respected the way those with abilities were. He was raised with very much an "us and them" mentality in which the "us" were far superior to the "them".
"It just... needs a little light." He remarked, moving over to the wall of windows in the large sitting room where they now stood to pull the curtains open and allow some sunlight in. Of course, turning to survey the room, it was as if the light did nothing for it. As if there were some sort of impenetrable darkness living in the space that no light could touch. It brought back memories of why he'd wanted to leave New Salem so badly in the first place. He frowned and then suggested, "Or maybe we can just look for a flat."
----------
"You mean the slaves." Mara said with a roll of her eyes. Truthfully she hated how the coven treated those without gifts as less, it always pissed her off, and the fact that her father saw nothing wrong with it made it worse. Mara was one of the gifted, apparently importantly so according to her father but she did not like the heirarchy of the coven at all. "Do they get paid for doing that at least?" She asked as she walked inside and glanced around. "Gloomy af isn't it?"
Mara watched as her father pulled open the curtains and then smiled at him when he suggested getting a flat. "I'm all for it, how do you think the coven will react to that?" Mara asked sweetly as she started to walk through the living room, crossing her arms over her chest. "Ugh...I can like...feel this place...I don't like it."
----------
Seth gave his daughter a look at that remark. They would have to agree to disagree when it came to that topic, same as they did with so many others in fact. "They are protected and cared for by the coven. That's payment enough." He wasn't going to argue the semantics with her. It was what it was and it wasn't going to change. He knew that all too well. That was, in part, why he had worked so hard to get away from it. And now here he was, back again, and he honestly loathed the idea of it just as much as Mara did, if not more. He just tried to pretend like it was all for the best so that perhaps she would be more... compliant. There was nothing he could do to avoid this, after all. Nothing either of them could.
"It's not their decision," he remarked with a small shrug of his shoulders as he began walking around the front room and pulling the sheets from the furniture. "This place is yours now. You can do with it as you like." As for being able to feel it, yes, he could as well. It was oppressive. Even he felt like an entirely different person being inside of the house. "We should go out for dinner. After we get cleaned up." He wanted to wash away the hours upon hours of travel before heading out into the world.
----------
Mara already knew what her father would say, and she sighed like she always did. "And I'm sure they are perfectly alright with it as well." She said with a frown.
"Are you glad you were born male, so that you wouldn't be the one the coven wanted when you grew up?" Mara had always wanted to ask her dad that but had never had the nerve...for some reason standing in this house made the words fall from her lips.
"Uh...sorry. Wait...what do you mean mine, it's yours." She said quickly and then shrugged. "Yeah sure." Mara answered as she walked towards the stairs.
----------
"I've never heard one complain." Of course that logic was a bit flawed as he never actually spoke to one or spent any time with one therefore he would not have ever heard one complain even if they had. Still, he tried not to think too much about that because there was nothing he could do.
The question caught him slightly off-guard and it showed when Seth gave a rather sharp look in Mara's direction. He hesitated, worrying his lower lip with his teeth for a moment before he replied, "Yes." That was also the reason why he had wished she had been born a son instead of a daughter. Not that he didn't love and adore her precisely as she was, he had fallen madly in love with her the moment he laid eyes on her and had been wrapped around her pinky ever since, but he didn't knowing that her life would be complicated, difficult, because she was female.
"No it isn't," Seth replied simply. He could explain to her that the men of the coven could never actually own anything that belonged to the coven apart from keeping it safe for the female members. For now, as her father, he had guardianship, but essentially the place belonged to Mara. "Your room is to the left," he called after her as she headed up the stairs. At the top of the stairs, the floor split into two wings with the right being where the library and studies were and the left being the area where most of the bedrooms were. "Last room on the right." It was the nicest of the suites. Large bedroom with a private bath, a walk-in closet, and an adjoining seating area.
----------
Of course none had complained, they had no choice in life. She just gave her father a look and then shook her head. If he thought about it, he'd realize how ridiculous that statement was.
Mara nodded at his answer, she hadn't asked it maliciously, she had genuinely wondered. "Yeah I don't blame you, I mean being a girl is amazing, especially if you're me, but this whole business is crap." The redhead said with a sigh, a smirk hiding behind it.
"I...I can't even right now." She said as she climbed the stairs glancing back at her father. "It's stupidly huge and like regal isn't it?" Mara asked with a laugh, not able to hold onto her sulking, she was generally a happy person and even though she hated moving here, the fact that she owned a mansion...kinda gave her the giggles. Even if it was old and creepy...and probably full of ghosts.
----------
Seth couldn't help but to exhale a small laugh, a smile forming upon his somewhat strained features. "That's exactly how I feel too. It's total crap." And it could have been avoided if she had been born male, but he wouldn't want to trade her for a son even if he could.
Nodding his head, not that she could see that, Seth replied, "Our family is ridiculously rich." And the house expressed that perfectly. It spoke of old money. Of course "old" could very well be the operative word. He would have much preferred something more... modern. And with less memories. This place certainly did have its fair share of ghosts, though perhaps not the sort Mara was worried about.
Seth pulled the sheets off of a few more items in the front room before deciding he had done enough. He needed a drink and a shower. He headed towards the stairs to get just that.
