WHO: Hippolyta & Victor
WHEN: Fall, 2007
WHERE: Victor's apartment
WHAT: The very bad end of the relationship. Hi, Lara and I are having fun!
WARNINGS: violence

It had been a long and frustrating day where everything had seemed to come together to undermine Hippolyta. A text from Victor had asked her to come around and although her mood was stormy - near murderous - Victor had asked.

There was a diamond ring on her left hand from him, and she was doing what she'd done once before - becoming the only Amazon to marry. (She still couldn't remember how it had been with Theseus- had she loved him? had she hated him? did it ever happen?)

When she walked into Victor's apartment - and soon to be her own apartment - she didn't realise it, but she was already looking for a fight.

Victor looked up when she entered, grinning as he laid eyes on his fiance. He had a few honeymoon plans to discuss with her, as well as wedding plans. He had made dinner and it was keeping warm in the oven.

His smiled faded when he noticed she didn't look greatly pleased. "Sil, how was your day?"

"Shitty," Hippolyta snapped, heading for the bathroom to run her face under some water. She scrubbed the cold water against her skin and then came back out, arms crossed. "Don't give me that look," she told him, annoyed.

Victor, who had indeed been looking at her with concern, immediately looked down at his hands. "Sorry."

Then he lifted his eyes to meet hers again. He forced himself to stay calm as he always did when she was in a state. She always calmed down eventually. And when she wasn't like this, they got on so well. He loved her dearly. He could put up with her moods.

"Do you want to tell me what happened?" Honeymoon and wedding plans could wait.

"Gods, no I don't want to talk about it!" She was her father's daughter and what she wanted in men was strength and force and not talking about her fucking feelings! "Why can't you just once yell and rage and throw things around? Why do you always have to be so fucking understanding!"

Less than a minute in the door and already Hippolyta was shouting.

Victor arched his eyebrows at her and he stood from the table. He wasn't like the person she had described though. He didn't rage and yell when he was upset. He worked through his feelings and moved on.

"That's just not who I am," Victor said. He didn't add that it was probably why he was a detective and she was still stuck walking a beat.

"Yeah, it's never who you are." Hippolyta's face was twisted in anger but she turned from him, stalking over to the fridge to pull out a beer. "Silvia," she said, mocking his tone, "calm down. Silvia, you're making a big deal about nothing. Silvia, you need to relax. You know what, Victor, sometimes things are a big fucking deal and you don't get to tell me how I'm supposed to feel!"

Victor wasn't aware he had ever told her how she was supposed to feel. Sure he had tried to get her to calm down, but he thought that was just helping her.

"I didn't mean to tell you how you are supposed to feel," he said slowly. "I'm sorry if you thought I was doing that."

"You're doing it again!" She brought the beer in her hand down, smashing it in the sink and pointing at him accusingly. "Standing there and talking to me like I'm a child and you have no fucking idea who I am or the things I've done, the things I'm capable of!"

His eyes creased in worry then. Usually she calmed down by now. She didn't generally scream at him like this. He didn't like it, but he was fairly sure yelling back would make it worse.

"Silvia, please don't yell at me. Just tell me what I can do to make you feel better."

Hippolyta approached him. She was shorter than Victor was but not by much, and she carried herself like a queen, like a warrior woman born of a warrior god.

"You can yell back at me!" she screamed. "You can act like a fucking man and stand up to me!"

He was getting angry now, but he still didn't react like she did when he was pissed off. "Silvia, I am a man. Just because I don't want to get in people's faces and scream at them doesn't mean I am not a man. To be honest, you could stand to learn not to scream every time something upsets you."

He had never said anything like that before, because he didn't feel it was his place to tell her how to deal with her anger. Now he was feeling attacked, however, and it was different. And probably the worst thing he could have ever said.

How dare he think he knew anything about her? About how she should act? About what she should do? She was a queen, an amazon! And he was just a little boy, something so clear to her in that moment. He should never have been allowed to stay with her kind. He should have been sent away with the rest of the sons in the beginning.

"You don't know me!" her word was punctuated with a blow, a hard right hook across his cheek.

The hit exploded pain across his cheek and he stumbled backwards. He caught himself before he fell and he raised his hand to his face and stared at her in shock.

His fiance had just hit him. She had never so much as called him a horrible name before; he never would have put up with that. And now she had hit him. It had hurt more than he ever would have expected. It was like she had swung a bag full of concrete into his face.

"You hit me!" he said in shock.

Shock. That was all she got from him. Shock and staring and not even a raise hand. What was this world she'd allowed herself to be drawn into? All she had was warrior rage and nothing to fight against. She wanted to draw her sword but she didn't have one.

All she wanted was for that stupid face to stop staring at her and the only way she could think to make it stop was to hit him again. So she did. Her balled fists burned from the blows against his face and his body but she couldn't stop.

Victor fell to the ground and he covered his face as the woman he loved pummelled his body. "Silvia!" he cried out and then her fist caught him in the chest and all the air rushed out of his lungs.

He moaned and tried to roll onto his stomach to protect himself. "Silvia, stop!" he managed to cry, his hands trying to block her fists. Each punch felt like he had been hit by a truck. How was she so strong?

Silvia he was shouting, but it was a meaningless world to Hippolyta. It didn't mean anything. Silvia, a shell she'd worn for a few years, a mask that would never be her.

She just kept hitting him, letting all the little furies and frustrations out on him like she used to let it out on warrior's in battle. And if you stopped fighting in battle, you died. Hippolyta didn't mind the idea of dying - it was always waiting nearby - but it wouldn't be today.

It was something about his eyes though. He looked up from shielding himself and Hippolyta saw what she was doing.

Victor. She loved this man. He wasn't a solder. He wasn't Hercules come to take her belt. He wasn't Theseus come to kidnap her and kill her women. He was just Victor and this wasn't Greece.

With a gasp, Hippolyta was drawing backwards. "Oh shit," she whispered. "Oh gods, I didn't mean- I didn't-" There was blood everywhere.

He couldn't beg her to stop any more. It felt like there was no more breath in his lungs. Under her fists, he felt something snap in his chest and he raised an arm to block a blow to his face and he felt a crack there.

The punches kept on coming. They rained down on him until all that was left was a human bruise, bloody and shaking. He had looked at her pleadingly and when she finally stopped, he rolled over with a groan. He couldn't breathe. Breathing was agony.

With a gurgle and a moan, blood spilled out his mouth and his eyes rolled back into his head.

Hippolyta was crawling across the floor to desperately retrieve her phone. She dialled 911 and went to Victor's side. "Victor, Victor, you have to wake up!" she told him. She wanted to shake him, but how much damage had she done. "Oh god, Victor! I'm so sorry! Apollo please," she begged, pressing her forehead to Victor's. "Apollo, please, I beg you, I need you."

On the other end of the phone a woman asked what her emergency was and she sat up straight, telling them she'd just found a man beaten up. She didn't want to tell them who she was.

Victor did wake up, the grey cloud of unconsciousness clearing just a little. He stared at her as she informed someone over the phone that she had found him like this. He didn't even care at that moment. He just wanted to be somewhere safe and away from her, and if this got an ambulance here, then so be it.

"Sil-" he grunted at her. "Tell them--hurry."

"They're coming," she promised him. "I'm so sorry, Victor, I don't know- I love you and I'm so so sorry. The ambulance is coming, soon, I promise, I never meant to do this."

She knew though that she had to get out of here. She was a cop - she knew she couldn't be here when they showed up. Not if she didn't want to get arrested immediately.

Victor could hardly think, but he was with it enough to realise she couldn't be here when the paramedics showed up. She would be far worse than suspended then.

"Sil. Go." He winced as he tried to breathe and pain spread through his body again. "Go now."

Hippolyta's brow was creased in worry and conflicting desires. Stay to take care of him? Run to save her own skin? She swallowed. "I'm so sorry," she whispered again and then got to her feet, quickly grabbing for her bag by the door and taking off, leaving it open behind her.

When the paramedics had shown up, Victor was barely conscious. He groaned at them as they braced his body and then moved him onto a stretcher. He was rushed to hospital and once there, he spent hours in the emergency room while doctors patched him up and tried to get the bleeding to stop.

Finally he was wheeled into a recovery room, a private room because he was a cop and had excellent insurance, and left to think.

It was difficult through all the drugs he was on, but he managed to make some very important realisations anyway. He lay propped up in bed, a bandage around his broken ribs and a cast on his broken arm. Tubes were in his nose and a bandage was even around his head. His eyes were swelling shut but he could see the stark white of the room still.

He felt like death.

Hippolyta had gone back to her own apartment and waited for the cops to come. But they didn't, so she had to assume Victor had not yet had a chance to tell them. He would though, and Hippolyta thought he probably should. She was a warrior. She fought for glory and for honor - she didn't beat up someone who'd only ever been good to her and who didn't fight back.

She made her way to the closest hospital and used her badge - probably for the last time - to find out if Victor was there and then what room he was in.

Warily she made her way there and opened the door slowly, slipping into the room but remaining against the far wall, her back against it. "Hi," she said quietly, guilt written across her features.

Victor knew her voice before he could see her. He turned his head painfully to look at her through puffy eyes. He could talk now, even though it hurt. And he had a lot to say.

"Hi," he began, because it seemed polite. This was hard. He had been in love with her for a year and a half and there had never been a hint at any time that something like this could happen. His heart was breaking, along with everything else. And there was no painkiller for that.

"Sil, you- You put me in a hospital."

Hippolyta's face cracked. She wasn't raised for emotions like this, for situations like this.

"I know," she whispered and shook her head slightly. "I can't even put into words how sorry I am. I don't know what came over me."

Victor shook his head and he closed his eyes at that. "It doesn't matter what came over you." Still, he didn't yell. He was very calm, though his voice was now cold and hurt. "I can't be with you any more. I am not going to be that guy, Silvia." It was hard to say and his breath caught in his throat once the words were out. He choked down a sob, though the effort not to cry showed on his face.

He felt exhausted and broken down and though he hardly cried at anything, now felt like a fair enough time.

Hippolyta. "You shouldn't be with me," she agreed, swallowing hard. "No one should be with me. I should have warned you, should have made you realise what I was before now. I never wanted to hurt you." Her last words were almost silence, pained and barely escaping her lips.

Her words hardly made sense to him, and that was fine. "You fucked up. Silvia, I need you to get your things out of my house. Leave your key on my desk. Do you understand me?" He couldn't tell. She looked strange.

"I know if I press charges, you'll lose your badge." He didn't want her to lose her job for fucking up. Her temper had been a problem since he met her, though. Maybe he could help her help herself. "I won't report this if you go to anger management classes. And I mean actually go to them. I want proof. Sent to my office, don't send it to my home."

His home. Not their home. Not any more.

Hippolyta nodded, quickly, willing to do anything he asked her to do in that moment. "I'll do it, all of it, everything you ask. I didn't- I'll transfer somewhere else and you'll never even have to see me again."

The idea of never seeing her again, honestly made his heart seize up. But she had betrayed him and hurt him and he had to do this. He had to. He closed his eyes and tears escaped them anyway.

"I don't want- It's not- There are tubes in my nose, Sil." He opened his eyes again and sniffed. "You broke bones. You don't have to transfer, I just can't be with you any more." It would be easier if she did, but he didn't want to force her into anything. "I don't hate you."

He loved her.

Hippolyta honestly wanted to cry seeing him there like that. He mentioned the broken bones and she could feel a tickle in her nose she didn't understand. She pressed her knuckles against her mouth and took a moment to try and let the dizziness pass.

There was no honor here. She had shamed her sisters.

"I love you," she whispered. "I've never really loved- I'm sorry. Gods-" she shook her head and moved back towards the door. "I won't come near you. I'm just so sorry, for everything."

Victor closed his eyes again, and he swallowed hard. He wasn't going to tell her he loved her back. Didn't want to give her any false hope. There was no going back here. They were over. Instead fo saying anything, he just nodded.

He was done.
