WHO: Makaria & Famine
WHEN: Valentine's Day
WHERE: Famine's restaurant
Makaria understood love only as a thing that happened to other people, as a thing that made her father and Persephone both smile at each other in a secret way and then make them both very sad. She understood that love, as a thing, involved a lot of happiness and a lot of agony and she had always wondered how any happiness could be worth that sort of pain.
But she thought, today, that maybe it was because whatever pain might come it didn't seem like it could match the possibilities of joy.
She sat quietly at table in the cafe, catching glimpses now and then through the kitchen door of the dark-haired immortal. She didn't know how to even start approaching her though, so she just sat. Maybe watching was enough. Maybe being close was enough.
Famine, as a general rule, didn't do the whole 'head over heels in love' thing. She liked her sisters, and Patrick, and she was even warming up to George a little. But love? Not so much. It wasn't part of her job, and you can't really miss something that isn't supposed to be there in the first place.
So when she went into work that morning, head in the clouds and her skin tingling, her first reaction was something along the lines of 'Uhm. Weird.' But the thought died almost instantly as Makaria's face became the only important thing she could concentrate on. She almost burned her hand on the grill and hopped away, cursing. Couldn't be doing that.
The bell over the door chimed, and she ignored it the way she usually did, until she stuck her head out of the kitchen. It was her! She smiled, really smiled, and threw off her apron, walking as quickly as she could to intercept the waitress.
"I've got this one, Judy," she told her quietly. The waitstaff, long since used to her being a little strange, had been told not to argue, and Judy bowed out without a fuss.
"Hi," she said, walking up to the table. "What can I get for you?"

Makaria smiled up at her and then worried that she was blushing. She wasn't really the type of person who blushed but suddenly her cheeks were so warm.
"Um," she said, looking at the menu but feeling too flustered to actually read it. She looked up and met the girl's eye. "I don't really... what's good?"

Holy crap, she was adorable. That just wasn't fair. Famine felt her mouth go a little dry, but forced herself to rally quickly.
"Depends on what you like," she answered. "I make a mean burger, and the ribs are always popular. If you're vegetarian or vegan, we've got a whole line of veggie dishes and salads, and even a tofu burger." She pulled a face. "Which just seems like blasphemy to me, but hey, people gotta eat." She laughed a little.

Makaria looked to each side of her as subtly as she could and found that no one was really paying any attention to the two of them. So she leaned forward across the table and lowered her voice to ask, "you are a god, yes? You feel like a god, but you're not Greek like me. You're very pretty." After that last part she put her hand over her mouth, a little horrified that she'd said it.

Famine smiled. "Sort of," she said. "I'm more like a personification, like your Di Nocti. We're like ideas or things made flesh. I'm Famine."
She ducked her head a little, grinning at her compliment. "I...thank you," she said. "I don't ever remember anyone calling me pretty. But I'm nothing, next to you."

"Famine?" Makaria asked with curiosity. "But... work in a restaurant?"
"I think that it's impossible no one has ever called you pretty," Makaria smiled at her shyly, because Famine had sort of just said she was pretty too and Makaria wasn't used to that either. Not unless it came from her family. "If I order lunch," Makaria ventured, "would... would you like to have lunch with me. Sort of like... a date?" She dropped her head then and cringed a little, because it hadn't felt very smooth at all.
