Jesse had gone out with Bastian earlier in the day, running errands and getting things done that he'd been putting off for a while. It had taken longer than he thought, and he'd had to stop for groceries on the way home, so by the time he finally did get home, he was pretty wiped out. Bastian was fussing because he was tired too, and all Jesse wanted to do was put him to bed and collapse onto the couch.
That idea flew out the window when he saw Nicholas and his mother, though. Her eye was a shade of purple that should never be on a human face, and his stomach dropped. "Patricia, oh my god," he said, coming further into the house. "What happened?"
