On the very last day of March, Emma Kemp woke up in the bed she shared with her husband, for the very last time. She tried to sleep in, savouring all the time she had left, but it was virtually impossible to do so, especially since William was jerking uncontrollably beside her, even in his sleep. She didn't often sleep with him any more anyway, as it was very difficult to do so, but it had seemed important somehow.
That afternoon, Emma drove him to the place he would call home until he, rather mercifully, passed on. Things has escalated to the point where she just couldn't take care of him at home any more, not even with the help of a nurse. It had been a heart-breaking decision, but Emma had to think about her own health. She was still recovering from the latest round of chemo herself, afterall.
After waking up alone on Saturday, Emma and tried to busy herself with fussing over Lily, to the point where Lily had, frustrated and annoyed, screamed at Emma and flounced out of the house. Suddenly alone, Emma had no idea what to do with her time.
As the mother of five and the grandmother of one, Emma had never really had time to herself. She had always been chasing after one child or another, and by the time Lil was old enough to drive herself around, William had gotten sick. Emma had devoted so much of her time to caring for her husband in the last three years, that suddenly she was at a loss.
She found herself at Aidan's door rather shockingly, but there was something she wanted to tell him. She adjusted her headscarf while she waited for him to answer the door, glad that she knew Charlotte wasn't home yet. She wanted to speak to Aidan alone.
