"Guess we're takin' a short trip down south then," Euterpe smiled, moving to the front of the stage and beginning the frantic fiddle cry and letting Johnny be the one to sing.
When it reached the devil fiddle solo Euterpe improvised it completely, letting the violin drag out the sort of sounds some people in the audience could barely imagine. She locked eyes with Johnny and smiled brightly, her forehead slightly sheened with sweat. She flicked her eyes to the instrument in her hand and back up to him, giving him a look she hoped she sort of understood. All the look technically said was you ready for this? but she needed to tell him more than that. Euterpe knew she was going to toss the fiddle over the minute Johnny sang sit down in that chair right there and let me show you how it's done. She knew she'd suddenly take over singing the lead and let him show the audience what he could do on the fiddle instead. Euterpe could already see it all so clearly in her head, and it was a showstopper! She just needed Johnny to know it.
They used to understand each other so well when the music was flowing, but was it still like that? It felt the same as it had so long ago, but time has passed and sometimes couldn't just go back.
