WHAT: The end of the murder hotel
WHEN: Thursday afternoon/night
WHERE: Murder hotel and then Kemps
WARNINGS: Very brief descriptions of murder hotel and Hybris totes dying
Patroclus' life had been filled with upheaval lately, and learning that one of his best friends was missing was the straw that broke the camel's back. Patroclus headed out, sword in hand, and he didn't plan on returning home until he had broken into Hybris' hotel and saved his friend. He had been the one to see Lust and Hybris plan to harm Nicholas in the first place and he just knew that was where Nicholas was.
It turned out, he was wrong.
Patroclus hadn't known the hotel's location, but he did know here Hybris lived. He parked himself across the street from her apartment and he intended to wait there until she showed up and he could follow her. And while he was willing to wait for days if he had to, Hybris materialised on the steps of her building not an hour after he had settled in to wait.
Another hour of following Hybris as she ran errands nearly persuaded Patroclus that this was all going to be a bust, but eventually she pulled up at what looked like an abandoned building from the outside. The entire thing was surrounded by a high, concrete fence to keep out anyone who might trespass. Hybris made her way inside, unlocking the gate first, and then the front door.
It had to be the hotel Hybris was so proud of. There was no way he was going to get through the fence, but he simply drove his car up onto the footpath and climbed on top of it, to scale the fence. He was probably going to get towed, but the life of his friend was a stake here, and he didn't give a shit.
The drop was brutal, and Patroclus' legs burned as he sort of crumpled to the ground on the other side of the fence. Groaning, he pulled himself up and stumbled over to the building, which was locked tight.
As Patroclus made his way around the perimeter, he very nearly gave up again, until he found a back door that was locked with a gigantic, rusty padlock. Three bashes with the hilt of his sword, and the entire thing fell apart and Patroclus was inside the monstrosity.
Immediately, his stomach turned. Patroclus could smell fear, not to mention several other things. The place was laced with death and destruction and he had to put one hand to his mouth to keep from gagging as he went deeper into the hotel.
The place was like a rabbit warren, but as he neared the centre, he could hear it. Voices, begging for help, or god, or just for it all to end. There were screams and crying, and then one voice said, "you begging to let me play with you too, Warrio-"
Hybris didn't even get the entire sentence out. Patroclus knew if he gave the Di Nocti a chance, she would lock him up like the rest of the people in here, and he would end up being tortured for weeks, just like Nicholas. He had loosed his sword with such force behind it, Hybris' head was cut clean off.
It had been so long since Patroclus had killed anyone, and he stood in shock, staring as her body hit the floor. Only the cries for help brought him back to himself. Right. He had to save his friend, as well as everyone else in his godawful place. Panic and duty kept him moving, as he searched Hybris' body for the keys and then proceeded to open every single door in the hotel.
Some of the rooms held prisoners, and some held horrors Patroclus was never going to be able to forgot. Hybris had set out to recreate HH Holmes murder hotel and she very much had succeeded. Patroclus was going to take it away from her, but with every door unlocked and every captive saved, his hopes of finding Nicholas faded.
Once the entire hotel was cleared, Patroclus had to concede that Nicholas had never been there in the first place, and maybe that was a good thing. He had still saved nearly thirty people, and called the police so Hybris' hotel would be no more.
His hands were shaking by the time he showed up on Roxanna's doorstep. Thomas let him in, and Patroclus hardly even took a moment to speak to him or answer why he was covered in blood. He had to get to Roxanna.
He needed to see her to remind himself there were still good things in this horrible world.
