For a moment, Helen honestly believed he would say yes and everything would go back to the way it was before. She had had a spectacular image in her mind of what life would be like once they got back together. Happy and carefree just like before. Only two men had ever made her truly happy, and one of them was sitting in front of her now.
But when he broke the news to her that he had moved on she felt her heart shatter. There was a piece of her that thought that maybe he would have waited for her. "Oh," she said in a small voice. She withdrew her hands and clasped them together in her lap as she looked away. "Of course you moved on." There was still that selfish part of her that wanted to kiss him and remind him of what he had with her. Helen's heart had been broken so many times, she couldn't possibly do that to someone else. Not again. Not intentionally.
