Who: Roxanna Fielding & Jamie Kemp (Could be open to Thomas or Lena if you want, Lara!)
What: Let me tell you a thing
When: Saturday afternoon
Where: Kemp house
Once she'd finished her homework, Roxanna lazed around her dorm room, managing to fall asleep in a patch of sunlight. When she woke up. it was late afternoon, and she was hungry and bored. So she texted Jamie, grabbing a pizza on the way to his place.
"Ding-dong, pizza fairy," she quipped, stepping inside once she'd arrived.
"You're the best pizza fairy," Jamie told her. "Come on in, I'll get plates and drinks."
Roxanna followed him into the house, placing the pizza on the counter. "So what's up?" she asked. "How's art school?"
"As much as I love it, sometimes it makes me want to stab myself or others with an ink pen," Jamie answered, setting out plates and sodas. "Mostly working on small pieces for my classes, doodling all over everything. The usual. You? How's the drumming going?"
"I broke another stick last night," she laughed. "I think that's the sixth one this month, I should just start buying them by the case. It'd probably be cheaper."
Jamie laughed, and they tucked into their pizza. 3/4 of it was gone, before Jamie decided to bring up his conversation with Kat. He really hated keeping secrets from people.
"So, there's something I need to tell you," he began.
Roxanna raised an eyebrow at him. "Well that's not ominous, or anything," she said.
"Well you might not like it," he replied. "I talked to Kat the other day, and I...I told her what you told me a few weeks ago."
"You told her?!" Roxanna shrieked. "Goddammit Jamie, I asked you not to, I trusted you!' She started to pace, tangling her fingers in her long hair. "What-what happened, what did she say?"
"Calm down, calm down!" Jamie said, trying to reassure her. "It went pretty well, actually. Kat's not her grandfather, she's a really wonderful person. If she wasn't, we probably wouldn't be friends. She actually said you'd be welcome to come by and meet her, and your...I guess Deirdre'd be your great-niece. I think that's right." He waved at a chair. "Sit down, have some coffee." He placed a full mug in front of her.
Roxanna looked over at him warily, sitting down slowly in the chair. "That doesn't sound too bad," she agreed hesitantly. "Did she say anything else?"
"She told me a bit about Hecate," he answered, watching as Roxanna turned slightly pale. "She doesn't agree with how she did what she did, but apparently, being able to always find you is sort of a mixed blessing. What if you got kidnapped? Or mugged? What if no one could find you? With your blood, Hecate could. Kat says she takes the familial relation thing very seriously. She also said that going to see Hecate in the winter is probably not the best idea, since she's not the most social of creatures. Once spring rolls around, she'll probably be kinder. She's a triple goddess, and she changes with the seasons."
"Well I don't plan on getting kidnapped," Roxanna said. "But yeah, OK. I can sort of get it. I guess."
"No one ever plans to get kidnapped," Jamie said darkly. "I know I didn't."
"...What?" she asked faintly.
Jamie waved a hand, sighing. "I got kidnapped by a demon, starved, physcologically tortured. I don't really like to talk about it. But Hecate was able to look for me while I was gone. And Hecate also wasn't wrong when she said there's worse things out there. Demons and monsters, things that will take you and torture you for no other reason than that it's fun. And these things are stronger than a lot of others, because more people believe in them, and so they draw more power from that."
Roxanna dropped her head into her hands and groaned. "This whole thing is so fucked up," she muttered, the words muffled by her palms.
"Yup," Jamie said bitterly. "But this is our lot. We few, we happy few."
Roxanna drank her coffee in silence for a few moments. "So what happens now?" she finally asked.
Jamie sighed. "You should probably talk to Kat," he answered. "She'll be able to fill you in better than me, since she's more connected to the Greek world. If you have questions, and I know you probably do, she's better able to answer them than me."
She nodded. "And then?"
"And then you live your life," he replied. "Try not to let it shape everything you do. If you don't want to be involved, you don't have to be. There's always the chance, though, that someone will involve you, out of a grudge or an ill-guided revenge attempt. Sometimes the Greek pantheon likes to implode in on itself, and that can ripple outward and piss off the other pantheons. From what I can tell, they're pretty quiet at the moment, let's hope it stays that way."
Roxanna just sighed. "I need a drink," she muttered.
"Yeah, well...that feeling never really goes away."
