Who: Hypnos & Iris
What: We're going to talk like fucking grown-ups
When: Backdated to December 5th
Where: Hypnos' place
Iris knew that she and Hypnos needed to sort out whatever this was between the two of them, and the sooner the better. Hypnos was one of her best friends, and she hated not knowing where she stood with him. She was also a bit ticked, especially since he'd just up and vanished after she'd left. So she showed up at his building, hanging on the buzzer.
When there was no answer, she sighed, leaning down to yell into the speaker. "Come on, Poppy, let me in," she said into the receiver. "Either that, or I just start pushing buttons until someone else lets me in."
There was a bit more silence, and then the door buzzed and she let herself in. She made her way up to his door, and was barely inside before she socked him in the shoulder.
"Ow, fuck!" Hypnos yelled.
"That was for disappearing on me with zero explanation," she said archly, raising one eyebrow. "Be grateful I talked myself out of kicking you in the balls."
Hypnos eyed her warily, then made his way into the kitchen and fetching two beers for them. He passed her one without comment, and they pried the tops off before taking long pulls from the bottles.
Iris sighed. "We still need to talk about that night," she said softly. "Where did you even go?"
"Where do you think?" he asked, a small smile on his face. "I poofed out of there and showed up in Thanatos' living room. He's the more level-headed one of the two of us. Always has been."
Iris nodded. She was said to have a twin as well, but she and Arke had never been anywhere near as close as Hypnos and Thanatos. They went everywhere together, and even if one wasn't present at the time, it was only a matter of time before the other appeared. "You could have at least texted," she replied. "I would have even accepted, 'Freaking out, brb'. Something."
Hypnos hung his head slightly, staring into his beer like it held the secrets of the universe. "I'm sorry," he said, lifting his head as he spoke to look at her. "I wasn't thinking straight, and it's not a great excuse, but it's the truth. I just straight up panicked."
She sighed again. "Oh, Poppy," she said, pulling him into a hug. "I think we need to change some things, don't you?"
"Like what?"
"I think it would be best for everyone if we were just friends from now on. Don't you?' She peered at him, trying to gauge his reaction. When he didn't respond right away, she continued. "I mean, don't misunderstand. You'll always be one of my best friends, my Poppy. And I know you were lonely and messed up after Thea left. I don't mind being the one to help you through that, you know I don't, but maybe it's just time we stop being each other's fall backs. Or go-to, or whatever you want to call it. We had a lot of fun together, through times and places a lot of people will never get to see. But everything ends. And what if Thea comes back? What do you tell her?"
"The truth," he said after a moment. "I hate lying to her. I don't really know if I can, I've never tried too hard."
Iris nodded, sipping at her beer. "And that's probably for the best. And like I said, we'll always be friends, that won't ever change. You won't even be able to escape me in the Underworld."
Hypnos huffed out a little laugh. "You always were pretty tenacious like that."
She flicked his ear. "I just...wanted to make sure we knew where we stood," she said softly. "That I'm not rejecting you, or anything like that."
He nodded. "I know you're not. And you're right, of course you are. I guess it's true, that you tend to fall back on what you know in times of stress."
They stood in silence for a while, finishing their beers in the newly comfortable silence. After a time, Iris looked at her phone. "I gotta go, Poppy," she said. "I'm flying down to Florida tomorrow, and there are a couple things I have to do before I leave, and then I should finish packing. But I'll see you when I get back, OK?"
"Yeah, alright," he answered. "Have a good time, get a tan, enjoy the sunshine."
Iris smiled at him, until he finally smiled back. "There we go," she said, tapping him on the nose. She pulled him into a tight hug, ruffling his hair a bit. She crossed to the door, but stopped short and turned back.
Hypnos raised a questioning eyebrow, but he found himself with his arms full of rainbow goddess. She kissed him goodbye, I'll see you soon, you're still a part of my life. When she finally stepped back, they were both smiling a bit.
"All good?" she asked.
"You know it."
