Maddy was right and he knew Jamie was strong, but in his mind he kept picture Jamie at five-years-old, cowering in his bed because the loud voices in the hall scared him. The doctors had told Thomas Jamie had been starved as well, and Thomas had fought so hard to make sure Jamie never experienced that. It felt like a failure.
"I know you're right," he admitted softly. "And yet I can't relax." He leaned up and put his head in his hands to see if that made the swimming stop. "And Mom keeps reminding me I'm still sick so I feel guilty for worrying her."
