Patrick understood and he took a moment to squeeze Clio's hand before he went to unwrap Padraig's bandages and disinfect the wounds.
Padraig frowned sadly at Clio. "I'm so sorry," he said, with feeling. "I'm sorry you went through that. You're not wicked at all, he is. What I do is different than that. It's repentance." He very much did not want the wounds healed, but he wasn't going to argue.
"It's not repentance, it's bullshit Patrick finally spat. "I know the Pope does it and whatever else, but it's not okay, Padraig. It wasn't okay when I did it and it's not okay for you to do it. Sometimes we're supposed to hurt here," he went around to show Padraig his hand on his chest, over his heart. "And it sucks. You're using this as a crutch. I know because it's what I did too. You think...if the outside hurts, then maybe the inside will feel better, but it doesn't. You have to feel the pain and then move on." That is what Clio had taught him anyway.
