WHO: Lyra & Little [Open to Thanatos]
WHEN: Thursday evening
WHERE: Lyra and Thanatos' place
WHAT: Comfort and dinners
When Lyra got home from a long day of classes and dissections, it was to find Little curled up against her front door, asleep. She put down her bag quietly and kneeled down beside the girl, reaching out to touch her shoulder. Little stirred and blinked a few times to look up at her.
Lyra couldn't help but feel a little maternal towards the teenager who had taken to appearing at their house surprisingly often. At first it had been a surprise and she'd told Thanatos that maybe they should call her parents to come and collect her? But Thanatos was right when he said that wasn't what the girl needed. Lyra often thought of herself as the one more connected to humanity, but Thanatos could see with a distance that she couldn't. If Lyra had family she would want to be with them and to tell them everything, so it was difficult - at least at first - for Lyra to understand that Little didn't want that.
"I think I fell asleep," Little said, rubbing at her eyes.
"I think you did too," Lyra said with a warm smile and stood, holding her hand out to help Little up. "Come on, let's get you inside."
Inside the apartment Lyra put on the kettle as Little sat down on the couch, those long legs of hers crossed under her. Lyra watched her from the kitchen and wished she could do something more for the poor thing. She was just a teenager but so terrified of the death and disease that was coming her way. Lyra couldn't really relate to that, and so she just tried to comfort the redhead when it was needed.
"I'm so tired," Little said, dropping her cheek onto the back of the sofa.
"Did you not get any sleep last night?" Lyra asked, coming over to sit beside the girl.
"No, I mean, last night, yeah, I slept but just... all the time, I'm so tired all the time. Life, it's tiring." Then she moved and laid down across the couch, resting her head on Lyra's lap. Lyra hesitated for a moment and then stroked the girl's hair. Little had so easily and quickly taken to being physical with the two of them. She seemed to lack any idea of distance, of that they had been little more than strangers. Whatever, exactly, it was that had passed between Thanatos and Little that first time they met had clearly been very powerful. Thanatos was like that, even to those that didn't know what he was.
The closeness that Little presented sometimes made Lyra ache; the desire to protect the girl who'd chosen them as her protectors could be overwhelming, and Lyra wished that she could wrap her up and take her away. She wanted, sometimes, to never to return her to her own family and to keep her. She'd never wanted a child more than when she was holding Little.
"Sometimes I feel that way as well," Lyra agreed, fingers running through Little's hair. "Life can be very exhausting, but it's worth it."
"I don't know about that," Little muttered. "I feel like everything's pressing down on me and I'm always waiting for the next horrible thing. I can't even breathe before something new and terrible happens." There was a little choke in her voice and Lyra squeezed her gently in what she hoped was a comforting manner.
"Nothing horrible will ever happen to you when you're here," Lyra said, lifting the girl to sit so that Little would see the seriousness in her eyes. She knew it was foolish to say, but she would have said anything (done anything) to make her feel better. "I promise to protect you."
"But you can't protect everyone else around me," Little said, looking down.
"I can't," Lyra agreed after a pause. There was silence between them for a long while and then she took a deep breath and said, "Alright," in a decisive manner, standing up and pulling Little to stand as well. "How about you go hop into bed and have a little nap - everything will feel a bit better after a proper sleep. And when you wake up," she said, leading her into the bedroom, "I'll have some dinner ready for you."
Little nodded a little sleepily, clearly not going to argue her way out of a nap, and Lyra pulled back the covers to help Little into bed, where she chose Thanatos' side and splayed her legs out a little onto Lyra's side. Lyra pulled the lightest of the blankets up over her, more as a protection from the world than for warmth, and left Little to sleep. She left the door ajar as she made her way out to the kitchen to start dinner.
